Hilux Surf car: years of production and main characteristics of models

Design and appearance

The Hilux Surf is based on the Toyota Hilux pickup truck. In the USA, the model was released under the name 4Runner. The fourth and last generation of Surf appeared on the world market in 2003.

This SUV with a frame body was produced exclusively in a version with five doors and had the same number of seats. It belongs to the line of mid-size cars produced by the Japanese brand.

In appearance, the car resembles the Mitsubishi Highlander and the representative of the same segment – Sequoia. The design of the Toyota Hilux Surf is discreet and quite modest. The SUV has smooth lines and transitions without sharp corners, and an oblong body. The side doors at the bottom are decorated with narrow relief. For ease of entry, the car is equipped with massive thresholds.

The wheel arches are high, convex and angular, which indicates good cross-country ability. This is emphasized by the sloping rear pillar, as well as the massive front bumper. At the same time, the discreet classic radiator grille suggests that the Hilux Surf is not only intended for off-road use - it will fit perfectly into the urban rhythm of life.

The taillights are vertical, and an additional brake light is located on the volumetric spoiler. The front lighting is wide. The roof is decorated with roof rails, and on its rear part there is a short radio antenna.

In 2005, a restyled version of the SUV was released. The changes did not affect the technical characteristics, but the appearance was updated. The radiator grille acquired a more “aggressive” shape, and the body itself began to look sportier.

Folk retro. Toyota Hilux Surf LN61 1988. From workers to “athletes”

There were three of them. Three pillars of the new Russian off-road ideology, which unexpectedly came to us from civilized Japan. Of course, we already knew something about it and even participated in its creation ourselves. But our Niva in the 90s was no longer considered something special, and in terms of overall comfort it did not match its foreign followers. The aristocratic Range Rover was as far away from us as if Britain itself. But Pajero, Terrano and Hilux Surf hit the hearts of residents of the Far East, Siberia and the Urals. Democratic, unlike TLC and Patrol/Safari. And yet they combine off-road potential and almost passenger-like consumer qualities. Among this trio, like any Toyota, the Surf became the most popular. We will talk about its first generation.

“People's Brand” can attribute any merit to itself. But not this one - the creation of a mid-size SUV with front independent suspension. The first, as you know, was the Mitsubishi Pajero, the third was the Nissan Terrano. And Toyota, with its Hilux Surf/4Runner, fell exactly between them - sales of the SUV in Japan started in 1984, in the States a year later. It is interesting that before this, for more than a decade and a half, the company churned out the Hilux pickup truck, which only received a modification with all-wheel drive in 1978.

Hilux 1968, 1972 and 1978

For the time being, they did not think about creating an SUV based on it - the time has not come. It came in 1981, when the Trekker Jeep was carefully introduced to the North American market.

Toyota outsourced the creation of the closed body to Winnebago Industries, which had previously been exclusively engaged in the construction of motorhomes. From 1981 to 1983, fewer than 2,000 Trekkers were collected. But the experience was considered successful. And in 1984, Toyota introduced its first SUV with independent front suspension. By the way, all rear-wheel drive Hilux pickups since the late 60s already had levers in front. Although the all-wheel drive truck of the 1978 model, like the Trekker, has an axle on springs. All that remained was to connect the gearbox and the wishbone suspension, which at Toyota even received its own name - Hi Trac. For some time after this, the Hilux still remained on the pavement, but it (at least the Double Cab version and in certain markets) was soon transferred to levers.

A strong opinion from the jeep community says that in terms of reliability, there is nothing better than a solid beam suspended on “skis”. But everything is relative. Look at those control arms, ball joints, tie rods. And compare with how it looks on modern crossovers.

A separate feature of Toyota is torsion bars. Pajero and Terrano also had them, the reader will notice. And he will, of course, be right. But in Surf, unlike Mitsubishi and Nissan, they come in the upper arms, eliminating the possibility of landing them on the ground. And even the upper ball joints are removable and bolted. However, it is also a kind of sign of the times.

True, the rear axle is still on springs. However, this was a typical solution for those years. Let us remember that the same Pajero, which shone at marathons, had spring modifications in civilian life. The loaded bridge is also a typical design for the class.

The lowest point under the bottom is the rear gearbox housing. Otherwise, everything is tight, like a man’s after an ice hole. All-wheel drive is classic Part time with inclusion in the transfer case and hub couplings, although on the Spartan modifications of the pickup there were plugs instead.

Moreover, the activation of 4WD in the transfer case is completely mechanical. The distribution of torque in it occurs by gears, and not by a chain. For both reasons, at some point the builders of trophy “cutlets” fell in love with this Republic of Kazakhstan. But the decrease in it does not amaze the imagination - in different versions it is 2.28; 2.29 or 2.56:1.

What’s curious is that with the “automatic” (and already a 4-speed one!) coexisted another “transfer case” - a chain one, with a range ratio of 2.65:1 and an electric-pneumatic drive. The hubs in this case were automatic.

The engines were supposed to provide additional traction off-road. True, not all. Let's say that a pickup truck generally relied on gasoline engines of the Y family with a volume of 1.6; 1.8 and 2.0 liters with power from 80 to 105 hp. These were even installed on the Mark II, on the “buses” Lite Ace, Town Ace, Hiace. But the 2.2-liter L diesel engine must have met the requirements for a jeep unit. Although it was stunted - only 72 “horses”. Therefore, the Surf immediately received a 2.0-liter gasoline engine as a base engine. In North America, the SUV was sold with a 2.4-liter 22R - with a carburetor or injection, in naturally aspirated or turbocharged versions, with a capacity of 98-137 horsepower.

The Americans generally got the best of everything - a priority market, whatever you want. For this, it was not a pity for the 3.0-liter “six” 3VZ-E, which developed 145 hp. Well, what about low revs and good traction? In Japan, the top engine was a 2.4-liter 2L diesel engine - fully mechanical equipment, “atmosphere”, 76 horsepower.

85 horsepower of the supercharged 2L-T was already something. And under the hood of our car is a 2.8-liter naturally aspirated 3L. This one, alas, was not installed. However, in more than 30 years, nothing will happen to the car. Moreover, this diesel engine did appear on the next generation Surf.

As we know, the second generation of the SUV received a completely metal body. And with the N60, Toyota did the same thing as the Winnebago with the Trekker, placing a plastic cover over the rear seats and trunk, which, as a rule, was distinguished by color.

This is also why in the 90s the Hilux Surf, against the backdrop of the Niva, and even more so the UAZ and even Soviet cars, looked like an alien from another world. Which, in essence, he was. And the fact that there was no frame or at least a safety bar under the fiberglass did not frighten our buyer. It was also not repulsive by the fact that the Surf N60, unlike the pickup truck, never had versions with rear side doors. Although the wheelbase allowed them to be arranged. And they even managed to solve the issue with the gas tank flap on the Hilux cargo truck.

Getting into the back seat requires considerable flexibility. As a reward, I received a personal heater and a pedal that reclines the back of the front left seat. Rumor has it that a certain number of Surfs went to the States without a backseat. This made it possible to clear an SUV like a truck and reduce duties. Familiar scheme.

The driving position is also characteristic - feet to the horizon. Fortunately, the chair has a height adjustable cushion. You can try to avoid sitting like in a teahouse.

When restyling in 1987, the SUV acquired a luxury that had never been seen before - front seats with pronounced lateral support. And the driver’s seat also has adjustable lumbar support and sliding bolsters on the backrest. It's a sport utility vehicle! This configuration was called SSR Limited in Japan and, in addition to the seats, was distinguished by a different steering wheel and an electric winch.

In total, three levels of equipment were offered on the islands, among which only the lower one stood out with leatherette on the seats and “bread slicers” for window lifts. For example, a tachometer was present on all Surf.

At the same time, this does not mean that the same Limited carried some kind of extraordinary “mincemeat”. On the contrary, we have just the “maximum speed”, and there is nothing shocking about it. Electrical package, simple radio, air conditioning and off-road instrument cluster.

Obviously, it was the upper equipment that was available with a short list of options: sunroof, running boards, “music” with a “cassette player”, navigation lighting. But the winch, it is possible, could be ordered for any Surf.

Regardless of the configuration, there are enough things in the car that attract attention because they belong to the era. This is, for example, a real parking brake poker. And the handle of the gas tank flap cable, by which the entire Surf, it seems, can be pulled out of the mud.

Emergency warning button located on top of the steering column. And a separate button that unlocks the ignition key in the lock.

And, of course, this SUV has a folding rear door with an electric roll-down window. It freezes in winter, the owner complains.

And in general, according to him, with a diesel engine, albeit such an old one, the Hilux Surf is not for extreme frosts. To make you feel comfortable, there is “autonomy” in the cabin. Another one warms the engine. And the upper tent on the external power frame is equipped with a warm air supply. The trunk, where it all fit together with the servicing battery, also once became a pleasant revelation for domestic motorists. Compare again with Niva.

The velvety rumble from under the hood and the passenger front panel with the same fit give rise to contradictions. I know that they let many people down in the 90s. It seemed that the Surf would steer like a car. And the power was quite enough to go beyond the limits prohibited by the domestic automobile industry, to overdo it with the speed in a turn and put the SUV on its side or make “ears.” And then what was to be done with the plastic top?

Now diesel evokes different emotions. Nostalgia for that era in which they had not yet lived to see “overblown” engines. 3L breathes, grumbles - lives!

And it allows you to easily start from second gear. The owner notes that the engine turns the 32nd mud wheels lazily. For a standard 29 Velcro, 90 forces is quite enough. Of course, in the abbreviation SUV, by modern standards, sport is clearly superfluous in this case. But this does not mean that 3L is a registered pensioner. Still able to move the pistons. There's just no desire to crank it up. I want to enjoy the traction and clear gear shifts - the lever travel is too large, but hitting the stages is not far from ideal. Again, this old Japanese feature is to create boxes that work and do not lose selectivity for decades. Although, I repeat, diesel allows you to move as if on an automatic machine. I started from second and immediately switched to fourth, which can be used almost as the only one in city traffic.

The suspension is soft. Even taking into account the rear axle on springs and an empty trunk. On the country road you can drown with all your might. Another thing is that to build the Surf, Toyota chose the shortest wheelbase available for a pickup truck. 2616 mm is, naturally, not almost UAZ two forty. And yet the Hilux is a jerk; before very obvious potholes, you need to slow down.

We drive out onto a snowy “intersection” and it turns out that the Surf, due to the low-range nature of the engine, does not always require a lower gear. He plows through the “powder”, like a dog rejoicing at the first snow. Of course, sometimes he asks to tuck the “lower”. However, in general, it demonstrates complete disregard for the fact that it slows down the rolling of the wheels.

When a more serious terrain gets under them, Surf... gives up. We regret to admit that modern imitations of inter-wheel locks (if the system is well tuned) are much more effective than free differentials. On slippery surfaces, such as packed snow, even good suspension articulation becomes useless. It seems that the wheel is still firmly on the surface, but in fact it is already unloaded and slipping. In such situations, only inter-wheel locking will help, and for the Surf it was offered only as an option.

If you do not take into account the “Americans” (for example, the International Scout and the Chevrolet Blazer of the 60s), this is the first example of building an SUV on a pickup truck platform. Without a doubt, the most widespread and with distribution on both sides of the ocean and on all continents. Yes, the first Surf did not become popular in Europe. However, he came to us as if he were at home. And it’s not his fault that the next generation debuted in Japan just five years later (which was atypical for SUVs), becoming even sleeker, more civilized, and presentable. Of course, cars in the N120/N130 body were more expensive on the secondary market. And yet, they somehow quickly pushed the recently massively sold N60 into the background.

But you know, this is a rare case when even in Russia there are preserved specimens that have not been “tweaked” by any tuning. What can we say about the States - you can find such “candy” there... And of course, they are preparing them - they install a safety bar at the rear, roll up an axle instead of the front “lever”. They lift it, after which they install wheels a few inches larger.

Salon

Thanks to a successful color palette of beige, gray and dark tones, the Toyota Hilux Surf interior looks light and spacious.

For the convenience of the driver and passengers, wide armrests are designed on the doors, next to which there are locking buttons and window lifts.

Finishing materials are of high quality, plastic is resistant to scratches and minor damage. The instrument panel consists of three separate wells that display information about the vehicle's status.

The center console is equipped with many buttons through which you can adjust the climate inside, select the airflow angle, turn on heated seats, etc. A music player is installed in its upper part, and above it is an LCD monitor. The steering wheel has a classic design without additional sections.

For convenient structuring of things, the luggage compartment is divided into two parts by a removable shelf. There are also many boxes and containers for glasses inside the machine.

Hiux Surf has another design feature - its rear window can be raised. In this way, the interior is quickly ventilated and cooled, this is especially important in warm weather, and also allows you to use the air conditioner less often and save fuel.

Toyota Hilux Surf

- production began in 1997. The combination of style and technology Hilux Surf, created by Toyota, has proven itself in the market and is time-tested.
Among the existing basic colors of the Hilux Surf, you can easily find one that suits you, but most likely you can choose it to order. We most likely do not have all the configurations of this Toyota Hilux Surf model, among which there are various options for assembling the Hilux Surf: the gearbox can be automatic or manual, the interior is trimmed with leather or wood inserts, wheels and other additional elements of the Hilux Surf body, which are certainly will be reflected in the price of the Hilux Surf. Technical characteristics are good, but don’t forget about the safety of the Hilux Surf or the engine capacity, which will then make itself felt in terms of operating costs in the future, as well as Hilux Surf repairs and maintenance with a warranty period. Since the purchase is made not for several months, but for several years, so consider for yourself what you will do in summer and winter, what trips to make on the Hilux Surf
. The table below compares several configurations of the Hilux Surf; the parameters include: what are the overall dimensions of the Hilux Surf, what is the fuel consumption in the city, highway or mixed, engine size, maximum speed and acceleration time to 100 km/h, curb or gross weight Hilux Surf, wheelbase, front and rear wheel tracks, transmission type (gearbox/gearbox), what drive, tire size, what power or torque and what price. In addition to all the numbers, you can read reviews of car owners about the Hilux Surf, watch videos or news, tests (test drive, crash test).

Description of generations

Toyota Hilux Surf and 4Runner brands are identical. The only difference is the steering wheel position: the Surf is designed for left-hand drive, and the 4Runner is designed for right-hand drive. At first they were equipped with a manual transmission, later with an automatic transmission.

First Surf line

The first generation was not much different from a pickup truck. The partitions between the cab and the body were removed, and the rear part was covered with a plastic roof. The car was equipped with a manual transmission, carburetor gasoline or diesel engine. The main characteristics of the first generation Hilux Surf are shown in the table below.

Attention! Diesel models were produced with the N-LN60V body, and gasoline models with the L-YN60V body. SR-equipped cars did not have sun visors on the mirrors; their front bumpers were not chrome-plated, but black, unlike the SSR. The SR version was equipped with H78-15B tires, and the SSR - 215R15-6. The engines were 4-cylinder, in-line.

Second generation

The second version of Surf appeared in 1989. The car body was now completely made of metal. 5-door models began to be produced along with 3-door ones. The interior was decorated using velor or leather. The front suspension has changed: it has become independent, in the form of two levers with a torsion bar. There is a switch between 2WD and 4WD modes.

Such a characteristic as engine power did not change until 1990. The gasoline versions were equipped with 3Y-E engines, like the first generation models. Since 1990, powerful injection 6-cylinder V-shaped engines 3VZ-E began to be installed.

The power of diesel engines has increased. The turbocharged 2L-T appeared, and in 1990 - the 2L-TE, which was more economical. The first consumed up to 10.2 liters per 100 km, and the second - up to 7.2. Along with mechanical ones, automatic transmissions began to be installed. The table shows the characteristics of the 2nd generation Toyota Hilux Surf models.

The Limited version was available with power windows and central locking. The cars were equipped with 215SR15 tires.

Second generation, restyling

In 1991, the generation was restyled. First, the shape of the headlights and turn signals was changed. A Wide Body version of the car was released with a wider body. After 1993, production of 3-door cars was discontinued.

In 1993, a new 1KZ-TE diesel 4-cylinder engine with 130 horsepower was installed on the 5-door Surf. There is a switch between two driving modes: standard and powerful. The table shows the characteristics of the restyled line.

Versions G and X were equipped with a radio. A spoiler was installed on the G series model. A door stiffener appeared. The tire size of the Hilux Surf II SUV is 215SR15, Wide Body - 265/70 R15.

Third line

The third generation began to be produced in December 1995. The SUV has undergone major changes. The body has moved closer to modern outlines and has become more streamlined. The salon began to be decorated richly: models trimmed with leather or velor appeared. The panels were finished in wood; expensive models were equipped with Recaro seats and a stylish Momo sports steering wheel. The shield has acquired additional panels with beautiful lighting. Additional navigation instruments have been added: compass, altimeter, inclinometer.

The car has become softer thanks to the new front suspension. It is well adapted to city driving. The “smart” differential engages all-wheel drive depending on road conditions. Rear-wheel drive models appeared. Diesel and gasoline engines have changed. The table shows the main characteristics of third-generation SUVs.

The Hilux Surf was equipped with 265 70R16 tires for the Wide Body model and 215/80R16 tires for the standard body.

Third generation restyling

The third generation was changed twice. The first time was in August 1998, the second time in July 2000. The changes affected mainly the appearance. The front part of the body has acquired smoother contours.

During the first restyling, the diesel engine was improved through the introduction of an intercooler. Power increased to 145 horsepower. The Hilux Surf III was fitted with 235 60R16 tires. A new 3-liter 1KD-FTV diesel engine was developed for the second facelift of the car. Power increased to 170 horsepower. In terms of comfort, the SUV is close to the LC Prado 90.

Fourth line

Interesting fact! The last generation was produced from 2005 to 2012. The interior design has been greatly changed. Comfortable armrests have appeared. The instrument panel was close to the driver; a monitor was mounted in the middle, and below it was a display with buttons for controlling the climate control. The trunk is divided into 2 levels that could be combined. There were illuminated thresholds, an electric sunroof, and electric seat adjustment.

At first, new models were equipped with third-generation engines, but in 2005 more powerful ones were installed. Front airbags were installed in the basic configuration; it was possible to install side airbags and curtains. The table shows the characteristics of the main fourth generation models.

Reviews

Vyacheslav:

“After I saw a photo of the Toyota Hilux Surf restyling, I wanted to buy this car. Picked it up at an auction in Japan. I am the second owner.

Over 70 thousand mileage I only change consumables: boots, filters, wheel bearing. Overall the car is very reliable, I drove it long distances. The suspension is soft, comfortable handling. To complete the picture, the Hilux Surf would also like to see a bridge locking function.

I have a black body, in the summer it warms up quickly, it’s hot inside. But I mostly drive with the windows open. If you turn on the air conditioning, your gasoline consumption will be around 20 liters per hundred meters.”

Andrey:

“I used to drive a Prado, but decided to switch to another Toyota. I liked the Surf because it is a frame car, and in 2021 this is a rarity. I looked at the reviews on Drome, they only reinforced my desire to buy. I went to Vladivostok to pick up the car, and on the way back I got used to the right-hand drive. Now this does not cause discomfort.

I went fishing on the Surf and it handles off-road conditions well. The passport for my 2.7 all-wheel drive indicates consumption within 12 liters, but in reality I get 16.

In winter I felt the shortcomings. Due to permanent all-wheel drive, controllability is lost on slippery roads.”

Dmitriy:

“The Hilux Surf is a real workhorse that will never let you down. I traveled all over central Russia with it. Track, dirt, off-road – she can do it all.

The car is playful and fast. The interior is spacious and comfortable, nothing creaks. After 2 years of operation, only the damper for switching the direction of air supply became jammed.”

I go to a car service center exclusively for scheduled replacements of consumables. Well, I also did some minor tuning - I installed a “knuckle bar” and had it made to order.

Anatoly:

“When I got into the car for the first time, I was impressed by how soft the chassis was. Small holes and irregularities on the road are not felt at all. But if you drive slowly on the dirt road, you feel a roll.

The interior is luxurious: a large glove compartment, comfortable wide armrests, the rear seats can be folded into a flat floor and transport large cargo.

The Hilux Surf is unpretentious in maintenance. It’s easy to change the cabin filters and oil yourself; I don’t go to a service station for this. But over 8 years of operation, I inspected the front calipers twice - this is Surf’s weak point.”

Report on the preparation of the Surf 130 TD for tourism

Hello everyone, I’m finally ready to try to write my own report with a few photos. There will be no serious tuning. Additional tanks, security forces, 3 locks - I don’t need it. I'm trying to build a TOURIST

I’ll warn you right away - I’m not much of a scribbler, so don’t judge strictly. Somehow I prefer live communication =)

and one more nuance - I often log in either from a phone or a tablet, and on the laptop there are definitely a couple of cups of coffee in the keyboard, so don’t be too harsh on typos.

So, let's begin.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been drawn to nature, but it just so happened that all my previous cars were small cars and all right-handed (=

Corolla AE110-Altezza-Crown- and now Toyota Hilux Surf 199? (honestly, I don’t remember) 2L-Te, automatic, maximum set. and Toyota Allex 2003 1.5L 4Wd.

I bought Surfa from my friend Denis, he really wanted a bridge in front, and after Surfa he took the 70th truck in a rather tired state from Ivanovo.

We ourselves are from Chelyabinsk (jokes with the word “severe” are annoying).

At the time of purchase, the Surf was in normal condition - minor sores, nothing criminal, but there was a lot to put your hands on, to put it mildly. I drove, nothing fell off, did not smoke, did not crunch except for the outer CV joints - and okay.

This is how I bought it and hung up the muzzle after 2 days:

and this is what he looked like after about six months:

I will try to be as consistent as possible as my memory allows, but you understand, a lot of little things have been done that I would like to mention, but they are irretrievably lost in the labyrinths of memory...

so don’t be angry about some “raggedness” in the story. From the very beginning I tried to run an on-board vehicle on Drive2, but in order to be in the rating there (so that people constantly read, write, comment and there is feedback) you need to LIVE there - write about replacing light bulbs in dimensions, etc... I can’t do that, but at first I tried there unsubscribe regularly, so perhaps some little things there will be interesting to you: https://www.drive2.ru/r/toyota/742604/

for example, there is a photo report of how I cured the “unblown” windshield, something via radio, details about dry cleaning the interior with your own hands, about the trunk in more detail than will be here.

If you throw out the primary needs after buying a car (oil, camber, brakes, etc.), then the next step I took was installing the Expedition rack.

a trunk was purchased. samovar. brewed under 185 surf. In principle, it was done well.

20140228_191911.jpg

Of course there are a lot of joints - there is a lack of preparation, here it is a little crooked, here it is uneven, but in general it’s not bad. the main thing is that it is strong and reliable.

If you don’t look closely at the little things and don’t find fault, then he’s very cute. especially after painting)

The “original” fastenings on the trunk were cut off, I had to re-cook them - I’m a very beginner welder, and I couldn’t weld metal4 to 1.5-2mm metal properly - I was constantly burning through them. called a friend. he is a maestro) in principle the trunk was now ready for painting.

All that was left to do was *what seemed* small—to make fastenings on the roof. Since I have a “bald” roof (and 90% of surfers are like that), the decision was finally and irrevocably made to drill the roof. The most difficult thing is that the roof is semicircular (when viewed from behind), so simple 90g corners will not work - you will have to weld the “horns” vertically from strips of metal. I read and thought a lot about this. I settled on this option:

in the end, my friend tricked me into grabbing it directly on the car - then we’ll do it 100% vertically along the trunk. it was useless to resist, because he is 110kg and I am a little smaller)))

20140318_174034.jpg

By the way, before all this we spent 2 days in the garage learning to cook. we specially burned electrodes, transferred metal to learn... we sort of learned... at least I can definitely weld a fence in the garden now))

ok, the mount on the car - the “rails” or “horns” as we called them were secured, we figured out the trunk - everything is more or less even.

before making holes, everything was measured not even 7 but 77 times with all kinds of levels, tape measures, through the eyes of 4 different people, from different angles, etc...

When all kinds of “measuring instruments” came to a consensus, 10 holes were made.

With great difficulty, but still the lower (internal) amplifiers were inserted. from strip 4x40mm. (it’s difficult to fit between the roof and the original amplifiers, but in the end they sit there as if from the factory)

horns - rack mount surf 130

After all the holes are in place, do not forget to go over them with 2-3 layers of paint on a cotton swab so that they do not rust.

under the outer “horns” there is a good layer of sealant, or, as some have done, 2-sided tape. I use black Loctite sealant. and of course the plane that is adjacent to the roof is painted.

and also nishtyakov - all my hardware is Stainless steel

Then I spent the whole day painting the trunk - I came to a friend (he has his own house - within walking distance there is hot water, 220, an assistant, company, tea, coffee, cookies

Once again I cleaned everything with a cord brush on an angle grinder, wiped it thoroughly with a cloth and degreaser... in difficult places (the mesh) I degreased it with a brush. I took a 5cm brush - it should have been wider - I think it would have been more comfortable...

20140322_154747.jpg

I chose regular paint (in a 3in1 jar for a brush and a spray can - all black matte) because: powder paint will peel off 100% in six months to a year - everyone writes about it. It is impossible to tint the powder beautifully. and similar paints - no problem.

Maston's "almost rusty" primer cylinders were recommended in almost all departments of our car flea market, but no one had them. I found it in the end. and I simply chose a can for painting with a brush - I called a friend and asked “bring any black paint for difficult (rust) materials.” By the way, I liked applying it - it dries really quickly - the hiding power is quite good, the matte finish is also pleasant. Let's see how it behaves.

In any case, this is not a powder coating - you can always touch up problem areas

20140322_142830.jpg

I painted the most visible parts - the pipes - with a spray can, because the surface is smooth and beautiful, and everything else - the crossbars, mesh, etc. - with a brush - because... more stable, and the layers are thicker IMHO.

It turned out about 3-4 layers with a brush and about 3-4-5 full layers with a balloon on the pipes.

It took about 600-700g of paint and 2 cans.

In order not to give some Pioneer a hijack at night, I bought a bike lock

put everything in place

20140322_172046.jpg

It took me about 4-5 days to do everything.

if you have all the tools (at least a good drill and branded drills) and a couple of assistants, and most importantly a clear understanding of what and how to do, then you can actually do it in 2 days, one of which will be spent on painting.

If anyone is really thinking about an expedition rack, there is not a lot of money, you don’t want to +++ yourself, then I recommend the racks from Oleg Sokolov (Kostroma) price tags from 10-12 tr. You can find it on our forum

PS - for those who have roof rails, all the difficulties, nuances, time and nerves can be divided three times)))

PPS - budget

trunk 7500

paint brushes cylinders 1100

fastener 800

iron sheets 450

little things (discs for grinders, electrodes, etc.) well, 200-300 rubles
