Real fuel consumption of Toyota Prius according to reviews from car owners

Rated fuel consumption is one of the most informative and important characteristics of a car for the driver. This is what manufacturers often use to advertise and promote a particular new car model.

Among owners of used cars, it is considered acceptable to consume up to 10 liters of gasoline or diesel per 100 kilometers. In foreign countries, this indicator is indicated in miles, so recalculation into “native” units is often necessary. The fuel consumption tables available in this section of the site are considered very useful.

What does the fuel consumption indicator indicate? What does this characteristic mean? We are talking about hydrocarbon fuel consumption. For example, for an SUV the figure corresponds to 9.5 liters per 100 km. It is quite acceptable, primarily due to the weight and power of the car. The indicator can be reduced due to the following:

  • use of energy recovery systems during braking;
  • lightening the weight of the car when replacing body and chassis elements with innovative materials;
  • engine improvements;
  • replacing the exhaust system.

For new models, consumption of 6 l/100 km is considered quite a “cruising” figure, but it will be higher for heavy SUVs and pickups and lower for small hybrids. The necessary information can be found in the tables provided.

What to do if fuel consumption is higher than rated? If the car consumes more fuel and does not correspond to the nominal value indicated in the table, this means there is a malfunction. Experienced service center technicians will tell you how serious it is and how it can be eliminated. In some cases, tuning makes it possible to further optimize fuel consumption, but this is usually achieved by lightening the body structure or by replacing the engine. Professional automotive technicians can provide specific recommendations.

Toyota Prius fuel consumption ranges from 1.2 to 5.9 liters per 100 km.

Toyota Prius is available with the following types of fuel: Gasoline AI-92, Gasoline AI-95, Gasoline Regular (AI-92, AI-95).

Fuel consumption per 100 km and dynamics

I press the button to activate the hybrid installation, in response - a report from the street on which nothing is happening: on the instruments in the center of the front panel only the inscription “Ready” lights up. I push the tiny selector into Drive, that is, towards myself and down. Gas - and off we went. I don’t remember the old Prius starting too sharply, but Toyota says that the very first response to pressing the accelerator is smoothed out, and the speed of the 1.8 petrol engine, all other things being equal, is reduced. But if you press harder, it just rattles. And overclocking is the most ordinary. Up to a hundred - in 10.6 s. Afterwards it’s much slower: the Prius seems to resist exceeding city limits.

Power unit 1.5

With rational use of all the resources of a Japanese hybrid car, you can achieve minimal fuel consumption, and its combined power unit will last as long as possible without major repairs. However, in this mode, during the cold season, the possibilities of heating the interior are limited; all modern cars heat the interior by removing heat from the cooling system, which cools down in a few tens of minutes when the engine is not running.

Actual fuel consumption figures for this car brand

So, what does the Toyota Prius actually show in terms of fuel consumption? Real owners of this car can tell you this better than anyone else:

Power unit 1.5

  1. Anton, Yaroslavl. I bought myself a Toyota Prius XW30 in May 2015. I fell for the fantastic efficiency indicators of its power unit. I don’t know how it is in Japan, but in winter my gasoline consumption can reach 10-12 liters. It seems to me that this is a lot for such a car.
  2. Sergey, Rostov. Measured both in winter and summer. In the warm season, it consumes up to 5.5 liters for every 100 km. This is with the air conditioning on and in constant traffic jams. When cold weather sets in, the number increases to 8.
  3. Igor, Saratov. I bought it for myself in the winter when I was visiting relatives in Khabarovsk. I tried it there in severe frosts. In the city limits, it was consistently up to ten for every hundred.
  4. Semyon, Kostroma. I took it quite a long time ago. I ride a 92. I decided to check the fuel costs. I came up with the following numbers: up to 5 in the heat, up to 7 in sub-zero temperatures.
  5. Vladimir, Sevastopol. I ride a lot around the region, so I took more measurements along the highway. In my car, the consumption never exceeded seven liters.

As can be seen from the reviews written above, the real efficiency indicators of the one and a half liter engine are not as pleasant as the automaker announced. Perhaps the Japanese company used higher quality fuel and fairly comfortable conditions during testing.

Motor 1.8

  1. Oleg, Chisinau. I specially installed measuring equipment to monitor this issue. I measured it several times in a big city. On average, the figure did not exceed 5.7.
  2. Zakhar, Moscow. My wife uses it more, but I also ride sometimes. For a huge metropolis, I think that the economical characteristics of the engine are very pleasant - no more than 7 in any driving situations.
  3. Ivan, Orel. I have a business outside the city, so I use cars in a mixed cycle all the time. Fuel consumption per hundred square meters is approximately 5.7. It got to 7, but friends advised me to change the gas station. The result was not long in coming.
  4. Mikhail, Krasnodar. Toyota Prius is my first car, so there is nothing to compare it with yet. However, my measurement results are as follows: up to 5 at minimum speeds, at normal speeds - up to 7, no more.
  5. Valentin, Kazan. I've been using it for three years now. Everything suits me. I also consider the fuel consumption to be acceptable - in the most difficult weather and road conditions it does not consume more than 8.

In this case, there are also serious inconsistencies. What is the reason? It is possible that in our country the network of electric filling stations is not yet developed, so many car owners simply do not use the electrical component of a hybrid installation. Or they refuel with 92-octane gasoline, while the manufacturer always uses higher quality and more efficient fuel when testing.
