The Land Cruiser 100 SUV was in serial production from 1998 to 2008. It was assigned the internal classification of Station Wagon immediately after its release at the initiative of the manufacturer. The first acquaintance with the consumer took place at the beginning of 1997 at the international Tokyo Motor Show. A successful presentation made it possible to immediately put the car into production, and already in 1998 the first sales started.
This is a classic representative of frame SUVs. It is distinguished by the traditional placement of units, as well as an independent torsion bar suspension installed in the front. The only difference was the Land Cruiser 105 modification, which had the GX package. Here, in the front part, the dependent suspension, equipped with a bridge with springs, has been preserved.
Problems TLK 105
Land Cruiser 105
If you don’t use your car every day, driving through forests and swamps, but at least sometimes drive it onto the asphalt and let it catch its breath, then its service life can be called unlimited.
An engine can only be sent for major repairs if it is handled with complete disregard. Diesel can be brought to this state by frequent use of fuel of the poorest quality. A gasoline engine will cause problems if you do not follow the oil change schedule.
When purchasing a Land Cruiser 105 on the secondary market, you should inspect the condition of the transmission. In off-road conditions with long slips, increased wear of the transformer blocking device occurs. The plane in which the blocking operates is often deformed. If this problem is not corrected in a timely manner, the pump seal will begin to leak oil, which may cause the bushing or the pump itself to break.
Land Cruiser 105 in winter
After winter use, due to the abundant amount of reagents on the road, the locking mechanisms may begin to jam. To avoid such problems, it is necessary to overhaul the device once every 150-200 thousand kilometers.
It is important to check the condition of bridges from time to time. Timely diagnostics will help to identify emerging problems at an early stage and eliminate them at low cost
Transmission Toyota Land Cruiser J100
After 300,000 km, the first signs of transmission wear appear. With each transition to the next driving mode, characteristic shocks or even impacts begin to be felt.
Problems arise as a result of displacements caused by the total play. This misfortune is formed taking into account the personal development of individual components. In this case, transmission repairs can cost up to 200,000 rubles. Still, it’s worth starting the inspection with the drives and then with the splined joints connecting the front axle.
After a certain time, you may encounter the problem of lock failure. Here you need to look for the cause in the servos or wiring. These elements fail upon contact with water.
The front gearbox is the next to fail due to the wear of the satellites, while the rear gearbox has a longer service life. The cost of such repairs will cost about 20,000 rubles. Leaking axle shaft seals are considered a chronic disease of long-term vehicles.
Test Drive
Toyota Land Cruiser 100 before restyling
Accelerating an SUV is relatively easy, but driving at high speeds is difficult, and braking is even worse. Land Cruiser 100 configurations with a turbodiesel or gasoline engine have a brisk acceleration to hundreds - 13.1 and 10.7 seconds, respectively, and a top speed of 180 km/h.
You can drive comfortably along the highway, maintaining smoothness, at speeds of up to 130-140 km/h. Then it becomes difficult to keep the Land Cruiser 100 in a straight line. Braking is sluggish. Even in configurations where there are not archaic drums at the rear, but discs, they are of little use. These negative family traits were eliminated only after 2015 in the 200th family.
Land Cruiser 100
The Land Cruiser 100 is not a sports car, not even a passenger car. The Land Cruiser 100 is made of compromises. On the one hand, the designers needed to preserve off-road qualities, on the other hand, to make driving on asphalt comfortable while maintaining dynamics. The result is a real utilitarian car.
Transmission
The Toyota Land Cruiser J100 was originally equipped with two transmission options: firstly, the MKP-5, and secondly, the AKP-4. Later, the automatic transmission was also produced in a five-speed version. The 100th Cruiser also received a stationary all-wheel drive, equipped with a low gear.
It is worth noting. A five-speed manual transmission was included exclusively with diesel units. It has impeccable performance characteristics, for which it received the nickname “eternal”.
Automatic transmissions in a four-speed version were produced until 2003, they were marked _ A340F. The design of this box turned out to be very successful. The owners highly appreciated the high reliability and low maintenance of the device, which did not require repairs up to 400,000 km.
Still, the weak link of this design is the torque converter, which, as a rule, is the first to fail. The result is unwanted vibrations, and then beatings, leading to breakdowns of other gearbox components.
Specifications
For Land Cruiser 100 there are 2 types of engines:
- A four-stroke gasoline engine requires an automatic transmission. The volume is 4.7 liters. At the same time, consumption per 100 km reaches 16 liters, which is very economical for such a giant. The engine makes 3800 revolutions per minute and is capable of accelerating the car to 175 km/h. The gasoline engine provides the model with high maneuverability and good handling.
- Turbocharging was introduced into the diesel unit. The engine capacity is 4.2 liters. To cover a distance of 100 km, a car will require 11 liters of diesel fuel. The diesel engine operates automatically and manually. Making 3400 revolutions per minute, this engine is not inferior to a gasoline engine in terms of maximum speed. Drivers note reliability and, despite the size, efficiency.

The Japanese company equipped the model with a front suspension with double wishbones. The rear suspension remains unchanged, similar to the previous generation of Kruzaks. It was this solution that increased the cross-country ability of the SUV and allowed it to overcome obstacles without effort.
SUV owners are unhappy with the built-in brakes. Working at the limit leads to rapid wear of the pads and discs.
The popularity of the Land Cruiser 100 could not eclipse the Prado 120 (comparison in the photo) - its younger brother, which became a product of the new millennium.
Review of Toyota Land Cruiser 100 4.7 V8 32v (2002)
Good day, forum members.
I will write about my impressions as a former owner of a Cruiser. Quite a lot of cars have passed through my hands, but this was the first jeep in my life, and although there are many positive emotions, I will nevertheless give an objective assessment. My review will be very useful for those who only intend, but are hesitant, to switch to a “hundred”, especially since the reviews about this car are somewhat uninformative, mostly enthusiastic.
The decision to drive an SUV came somehow spontaneously, it’s just that at one point sedans became uninteresting, as if I was cut off. Ripe, apparently. Or maybe the consequences of the vacation took their toll. The final part of the holiday was spent in the village of our historical homeland. Mother-of-pearl Toyota Mark 2, 200 mares, 17 wheel rollers, women are delighted, tires are “herniated”, a muffler polished to a shine and in places jammed... No, I didn’t drive it, of course, but the 12-centimeter ground clearance was clearly not for such terrain . Anyone who has had to grind Mother Earth with the belly of their car will understand me.
I didn’t decide on the brand, I didn’t consider anything except Toyota, because Toyota won me over with its reliability, there were many models, all of them worked like a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Someone may object, they say, I haven’t driven other brands. I drove, and not as a passenger, but as an owner. For obvious reasons, I won’t shed any light on which concern’s Pepelats I tested, but there were quite a few different annoying little things that I didn’t know while using Toyotas. There wasn’t a single car from the domestic auto industry in my fleet, somehow I bypassed them, and I don’t know whether I should regret it or not.
I picked up a hundred parts on the Internet, relying on intuition, which did not deceive me. The cruiser turned out to be in excellent condition, was serviced by official dealers, with a bunch of service books, carried someone’s wife, and for short distances, the mileage was 54 thousand at the time of purchase. I didn’t believe it at first, but then I did an examination, experts confirmed the mileage. All-round in a branded German body kit, stuffed with Pioneer equipment with TV, DVD, changer, tuning panel and steering wheel made of wood, leather, cruise. Seats with memory for two people, a very convenient thing. The steering wheel has memory, inserted the key and the steering wheel drove up, took it out and drove off, a nice little thing. Turn the key - uff-ff-ff... the familiar sound of a Toyota engine, the monster came to life, we turned on the speed - swaying gently, it started. I will never forget these first impressions. Looking at the Cruiser, it seems that it is something huge, clumsy, when you sit behind the wheel it is very soft and obedient, by the way, the turning radius was amazing, not very large, given its size! Very easy to manage, just super. Sorry for the drool, but I was very impressed.
I was pleased with the hatch, before I somehow didn’t attach any importance to whether it was there or not, but it turned out that it was a very interesting thing, when you look up - the sky is above your head. Parking sensors help a lot, they were already built-in, but with such dimensions it’s not easy to navigate at first. Convenient and large trunk, one half of the lid is opened up, the other half is down, if you load something, you have to lift it a little. I was pleased with the third row of seats, I think it will come in handy. The most versatile car, a kind of all-terrain minivan.
Having delved into the history of the creation of the Cruiser, I found out that Land Cruiser is translated as “land cruiser”. The name weaving justifies it without any doubt. Large sizes combined with a fairly soft suspension create the feeling of “swimming on the waves.” The engineers did their best with the suspension, you drive along the rails at a railway crossing - smack-smack of something down there, your head doesn’t even shake. The comfort is, of course, extraordinary. The back seat is very comfortable, the angle of the backrests changes, you can call it a sofa, you won’t lie down like that in a sedan. Visibility is like from a watchtower.
Everything in the external interior suits me; moreover, I consider the 100th body to be the most successful. Despite the fact that the shape of the bodies on jeeps is practically the same, but no, the weaving is always recognizable, and despite the fact that the design has not been changed for 10 years, it has not become boring. Even 80, and that is still at the level. After all, with such a large size, it does not seem heavy; on the contrary, there is lightness in its appearance, healthy aggression coupled with charisma. For example, the 200th lost these external qualities, became heavier and more impressive. But there is one fly in the ointment in the 100th body. The gap between the trunk lid and the bumper is obscenely large. It seems as if they forgot to tighten a couple of fasteners. Looking at this finger-width gap, you just want to grab a container of construction foam. Why the Japanese didn’t adjust this gap remains a mystery to me.
Minuses. It took me a while to get used to the steering wheel. It is comfortable, but the angle of inclination is too small, I like to keep my hands on top of the steering wheel, but this time it is quite high, I have to hold it on the sides. You move the seat and your legs tighten. Long arms are needed, but I think a tall person will experience discomfort. The seat is located too high, at my height of 174 cm, the distance to the roof suits me, but if my height is above 180, my head is already right up to the ceiling.
Long braking distance. Due to the large mass, the hundred part is pulled by inertia, when overtaking you need to be extremely careful, you need to have a large margin of distance between the overtaken cars, otherwise there may be trouble. The driving style needs to be changed, this is not a sedan.
Fuel consumption. Sperm whale! Although I was prepared for high fuel consumption, it is one thing to be prepared theoretically and quite another when you count piastres at a gas station. Stressful! But the job was done, I resigned myself, although with a kind word I remembered Corolla, who was sniffing gasoline. Think and think again before buying a gasoline Cruiser, it needs to be fed, and in large portions. Although for the money spent on fuel, you get in return a feeling of complete peace of mind, safety and confidence while driving. And also - power over the road. Absolute and undivided.
The average consumption was 13 liters on the highway, 25 liters in the city during quiet driving; I did not drive it in winter. Other owners claimed that their consumption was two liters less, why I had this, I think it was due to excess weight. It had a German body kit all around, and it apparently made the car heavier. Consumption increases further due to the fact that you have to sit in traffic jams for a long time. 8 cylinders are thrashing, but there’s no way to go, just yank and yank...
Seats. Uncomfortable, large, very poor lateral support, shakes when cornering, or maybe I’m just too skinny?))). When I sit in a friend’s ML, I feel a big difference. In the ML, the seats exactly follow the contours of the body, the lateral support is super, you sit like a glove. Before this, on all the cars (all were sedans) I found the optimal position, there was some kind of ambush here. I adjusted it in the evening, it seems fine, in the morning either I can’t reach the pedals, or the backrest is not right.
I’ll write about the skin separately. I risk incurring the wrath of all Toyota lovers, but I will say it as it is - I have not seen high-quality leather in any Toyota. Two, three years - and already there are folds and abrasions. Toyota has long ceased to be an inexpensive car, but despite all this, all models use the same cheap chicken skin. I had this on my Corolla, and the same on my Cruiser. I looked at a new Camry from a friend, the car is a year old, the sides of the front seats are worn out. Respect to the British and Germans on this issue, their quality is head and shoulders above. The Germans have gone further; on many cars the seats are now covered with thick, wear-resistant leatherette. It doesn’t press through, doesn’t scratch, and in appearance you can’t tell it from leather.
Torpedo. Regular Toyota one. Good quality. That's all. You won't see any frills here. The glove compartment, as always, was fastened in a hurry, there are cracks... All Toyotas have the same problem - the interior. A little more expensive finishing, a little more effort in fitting the joints, and the competitors would have absolutely nothing to show for it. Let me compare Range Rover; there is a happy owner surrounded by it. I sat in it for the first time and understood why the “English” ones are so expensive. The leather on the seats is made of some kind of buffalo, the car is three years old - no scuffs, the seats themselves “hold” the body. The panel is generally luxurious, leather, aluminum, wood. The joints are millimeter to millimeter. The quality is unsurpassed. I can’t say what the Range Rover is like in terms of reliability, but the finishing is done from the heart and with love for the owners.
Entering turns. Heels heavily. It is necessary to slow down, it is necessary to take into account the rather high center of gravity and large mass. I tried to avoid the pit at good speed and ended up skidding on dry asphalt! Such feints are not for Kruzak; for any maneuver you need to slow down.
Dynamics. Of course, it won’t take off from a standstill, but on the highway it will readily pick up, the reserve is very good. In general, the car is not conducive to fast driving even on the highway; you get pleasure from normal cruising speed. During the transfer I kept it at 100-110, the flight was normal, at times I accelerated - no problems, it picked up speed confidently. Very confident. Noise insulation. Not bad, but I thought it would be better.
If you ask for advice on whether to buy a Cruiser, I will answer - think carefully. Consider diesel, it is more economical. If you're tight on money, it would be wiser to buy something more modest; there are quite a lot of different crossovers offered at that price. If you are not afraid of the dimensions and fuel consumption, don’t even think about it, the Cruiser has a loud and good name, it is a real, reliable friend who forces you to respect yourself. If you need security, confidence, peace of mind, and if you want to get rid of the fear of a bad road - Cruiser! I don’t think that it is suitable for hunting or fishing, where there is complete off-road conditions. I heard from other owners that one hundred square meters can be “planted” quite easily, and it’s a little expensive and a bit fat to use it like that, in my opinion, of course. For these purposes, UAZs and Nivas are taken. City, suburb, dacha, to the village to visit grandma, family picnics - the plane itself.
Minuses? All the disadvantages described above are dissolved in a huge number of advantages. Most likely, you will not see them...
I sold it in connection with the purchase of a home, parting was not easy. In order not to be left without wheels, I took a Lancer on credit, the contrast is of course colossal, but I think how the situation evens out, I will take something similar to Sotka. I’m no longer looking at the 200th Cruiser due to its high cost, but from this class I’m very interested in the new Tahoe, its price is very attractive. Now I'm collecting information about him.
The review turned out to be long, I apologize for the many letters, I wanted not to miss anything.
Good luck to everyone and good luck.
Description
The first generation Land Cruiser was released 68 years ago - in 1951. This series of cars has existed on the automotive market longer than others. The car manufacturer is the largest Japanese engineering corporation Toyota with an 82-year history, a guarantor of reliability and quality.
The TLC 105 is a framed all-wheel drive SUV adapted for crossing countryside, unlike the TLC 100. The World UN recognized this Land Cruiser model as the most durable representative of its class. Despite its reliability and ability to overcome any difficulties, serial production of the car was discontinued in 2007.
Appearance
The exterior of the Land Cruiser 80, 100 and 105 is almost the same: angular shapes, lines, wheels with massive discs. Main differences:
- bumpers - on all 105 TLK they are painted black;
- rear lights - single;
- Door 5 is hinged, not vertical, as on the TLK 100.
In 2002, the car underwent its first restyling. The radiator grille was expanded, it acquired a single edge with the front bumper. 3 years later, in 2005, the Toyota concern carried out another restyling of the Land Cruiser 105. The photo shows that this time the headlights underwent changes (they were combined with turn signals, and the ratio of the low/high beam lamps became horizontal), the shape of the brake lights signals and again the radiator grille.
Some owners, especially those who are interested in cross-country auto racing or hunting, additionally tune the car, making the body even more durable and stronger.
The quality of the car's anti-corrosion and paintwork is beyond compare. Over a couple of decades of operation, rust does not appear even on chipped areas. When exposed to sunlight in summer, the varnish does not fade and the paint does not crack.
The dimensions of the SUV are impressive:
- length - 4 m 90 cm;
- width - 1 m 94 cm;
- height - 1 m 89 cm (clearance 23 cm);
- weight varies from 2 to 3 tons.
High-profile mud tires will allow you to raise the car a couple of centimeters, and you can increase the strength of the car by installing power bumpers.
Salon
The interior of the Toyota Land Cruiser 105 series SUV is dominated by minimalism and simplicity (mechanical windows, 1 airbag). In addition to the standard set of seats, there are two folding benches in the trunk of the car. And the front passenger seat is so wide that 2 people can comfortably fit on it. The salon is large enough to accommodate 10 people.
Trunk volume:
- without benches is 830 l;
- if you fold the second row of seats, the amount of space increases to 1370 liters.
Due to its spaciousness, the car is convenient for long journeys or hunting trips with a large group. The SUV is initially equipped with 2 heaters and an air conditioner, which create comfortable conditions inside at any time of the year.
Since the interior of the LK 105 car is a simpler version of the LK 100, the only option for seat upholstery is velor. In the extended full model TLC 105 GX, in addition to fabric seats, electric windows and air conditioning were installed.
Also, one of the features of the car is the presence of 2 gearbox control levers (1st gear, 2nd transfer case). And the switch for the fuse box 3 of the differential locks is located to the left of the driver at the ignition level.
Salon
In 2003, Toyota designers changed the appearance of the SUV: skylights, head optics, upholstery, bumper design. The technical characteristics of the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 remain unchanged. It was published in an updated form for another 5 years, until the release of the 200th series began in 2008. The updated variation was called “Amazon” (to distinguish it from the “Prado” series, which was beginning to gain popularity).
TLC salon characteristics:
- Mechanical seat adjustment.
- Spacious back row - three adults can easily fit.
- Universal leather trim for the interior, steering wheel, dashboard, seats.
- Electrical package – beet lifters and mirror adjustment (with built-in heating).
One of the undoubted advantages of the car is the luggage compartment. Its capacity is 830 l. When the rear seats are folded, the capacity increases by more than one and a half times - up to 1370 liters. If necessary, the trunk can accommodate a load weighing 700-800 kg and a pair of wheels.
All versions have 5 doors (4 passenger doors). Seats - from 5 to 8. The high seating position of the car allows for a view to the horizon from both the driver and passenger seats. The interior trim is uniform, the seats are roomy and soft, with comfortable armrests in the first row.
History of appearance
The first Land Cruiser appeared in 1953. The hundredth model became the seventh in the lineup of SUVs in this series.
The car was first presented in 1997 in Tokyo. The car went on sale the following year. Compared to the 80th model, the Land Cruiser 100 has a more modern appearance. Driving on the updated Cruiser has become more comfortable.
In 2003, the “weaving” was slightly redesigned. The car received new bumpers, optics and interior trim. But this modification was available only to consumers on the American market.
These machines are distinguished by their reliability and high maneuverability. That is why the newly released models were purchased by the UN. A separate model was also released for the domestic Japanese market. It was called Land Cruiser Cygnus. The Japanese sold a more prestigious car. It featured a luxurious interior, as well as options that are an attribute of luxury cars. A little later, a representative of this line will appear in Russian car dealerships under the Lexus LX470 brand.
Body and interior
The external design of the 100th model met all the requirements of the executive class, which could be noted for various reasons:
- massive hood;
- volumetric headlights, the optical elements of which were equipped with two-stage multi-reflectors;
- a solid bumper that goes around the sides;
- powerful wheel arches that protruded noticeably outward;
- increasing the glazing area;
- large door widths.
It was decided to cover the roof using non-woven materials. Various modifications have acquired an electrically controlled hatch. The device was available in two versions: in the first case, a folding hatch design was installed, in the second, a sliding hatch was installed.
Much attention was paid by the manufacturers to the security system, which included the following range of devices and devices:
- power steering;
- ABS;
- hydraulic booster for the brake system;
- front seat airbags;
- seat belt retensioners.
Brakes, suspension and steering
Compared to the previous generation, the Land Cruiser 100 received an expanded chassis, independent double-wishbone front suspension and rack and pinion steering. The modernization improved driving performance but had a negative impact on off-road capabilities and reliability. Therefore, the front dependent suspension was retained on the 105 version and was offered in some markets on the Land Cruiser 100. In addition, the “TLK 105” is equipped with a steering machine.
In 1998, for the 100 modification, a suspension was introduced that combined the AHC and TEMS systems (active height control and electronic suspension control, respectively). The TEMS hydraulic suspension, depending on the driving mode or on command, changes rigidity and ground clearance within the range of 220-270 mm.
The initial configuration was equipped with 16-inch wheels measuring 235/85, GX - 275/75 of the same diameter. The 100 modification (VX) has 17-inch wheels 275/65.
The 105 modification is equipped with rear drum brakes (disc and ABS were optionally available for the GX). The 100 version has disc mechanisms on both axles.
During the first update, the steering rack mount and the threads on the steering tips and rods were changed.
Exterior
All previous generations were, as they say, “cut down with an axe,” since they were distinguished by angularity and not particularly smooth forms. However, the new generation, released in 1998, became completely different. Now the element of the car was not dull work and power. He began to attract his customers precisely with style and design. A new feature was the use of a one-piece bumper, which now extended onto the fenders and emphasized the huge wheel arches.
Even if there were no company badge on the radiator grille, the manufacturer could still be easily identified, because a similar body shape was visible in almost all SUV models, take the Rav 4. Convex hood, huge square headlights, large rear-view mirrors. In a nutshell, the company came up with a concept that began to distinguish cars from other brands.
The width of this giant is 1.94 meters and the height is 1.88 meters. Honestly, it's hard to find a larger SUV of this era. In combination with wheels whose width is 275 mm, the car looks much more impressive than in the photographs.
In profile, this is a huge box, however, the SUV does not look boxy, as it did in previous generations. Large glass area, huge wheel arches - all this should provide excellent visibility and safety in any situation. I must say, the designers managed to combine the concepts of functionality and style quite well.
From the rear, the Land Cruiser 100 cannot be confused with any other car. First of all, this will be prevented by a large inscription on the chrome plate of the license plate illumination. In addition, the strongly protruding bumper, classic taillights and a huge rear door - all this gives away the “hundredth”. The rear door has two leaves that are divided horizontally. The lights remain on the bottom when opened.
Modifications
The SUV was produced only in a 5-door configuration. And the Japanese manufacturer’s competitors produced short and sometimes even open versions of the bodies. The car is based on a very powerful spar frame. The body is very powerful and galvanized on both sides. You can verify this by looking at the design of the Land Cruiser 100 SUV (photo can be seen below).
"Sotka" was produced in various modifications. The cheapest ones are GX and STD. They are distinguished by unpainted bumpers and a hinged rear door. The STD version does not provide electrical seat adjustment, mirror adjustment and steering column adjustment. This version lacks ABS and many other options. The interior is trimmed with cheap leatherette.
The GX version looks richer. There is an electrical package, the interior is trimmed with velor, and roof rails are installed. This version can accommodate more than 10 people. For this purpose, there are folding seats at the rear. In addition, there were GX with 9 seats.
The VX version is considered luxury. It was supplied in versions for 5 and 7 seats. The car has excellent sound insulation. The options and equipment here are much more functional and more expensive. The interior is trimmed in leather, has climate control, standard xenon, and stability control system.
Here you can find Arabic versions of “Cruisers”. Among the mass of similar Toyotas, they can be distinguished by their golden nameplate and air conditioning. As for service, everything here is the same as with European models. Reliability at a high level.
Interior
Inside, one cannot say that everything was too rich. Contrary to popular belief, this car is truly an SUV first and a daily driver second. This is emphasized by the transfer gear lever, which is located next to the gearshift lever.
In the basic configuration, the car is finished in a rather boring way, but it is practical, because the elements of the “corner”, as it is popularly called, are not only light off-road conditions, but also complete, impassable mud. The base is a black material that is still pleasant to the touch and non-staining.
Since 2002, an optical instrument panel has been installed in the panel, the readings of which can be projected onto the windshield. However, this is an option that Europe never got and remained exclusively in North America. There is a small navigation display on the center console. Oddly enough, in Russia the most popular package was the VX, which is the maximum. Considering the financial state of the country at that time, this is a very strange fact.
In this configuration, the driver received a massive audio system, electric seats, various options for a power hatch and many pleasant little things.
The version for the UAE has amazing equipment. Here, of course, there is leather, the interior is borrowed from the twin platform Lexus LX470. The most distinctive detail is the wood inlay, which is very rare to find on Japanese cars. “Under a tree” - yes, but not a real tree, like here. Well, what can I say, you can’t stop living beautifully.
Such a device has a very small stove, because it is not needed in the Emirates. This suggests a rather simple conclusion - this configuration is not suitable for Russia. There are strange options for seating passengers: either 7 or 10. Although, if you objectively evaluate the volume of the cabin, you can easily seat 5-6 people in the back seat, even adults, and even more children.
Toyota Land Cruiser 100 configurations
The Land Cruiser 100 was supplied to Russian buyers in three trim levels.
STD (standard) is a simple, practical version of the Kruzak. There are mechanical windows, seats and floors covered in vinyl, no airbags, ABS, but there is air conditioning. The rear bench doesn't fold flat, and the third row of seats is spartan. Stamped wheels are shod with narrow tires measuring 235/85 R16.
2002 Toyota Lancruiser - Standard
GX is the average configuration of the Land Cruiser 100. In addition to the air conditioner, it has a number of other useful things: electrical accessories, an immobilizer, a radio, and an electric antenna. There are roof rails on the roof, and the interior is upholstered in fabric. The backs of the second row of seats can be adjusted and folded, and the third row has become more comfortable. The “rollers” are cast, shod with 275/75 R16 tires. Options included a sunroof, ABS, winch, and rear disc brakes.
2005 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 GX
VX is the most expensive version of the Land Cruiser 100. Seat upholstery was offered in a choice of leather or velor. The steering wheel and gear lever are trimmed in leather. Among other things, there is a full power package, a climate control system, and alloy wheels with 275/65 R17 tires.
2002 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX
Toyota Kruzak 100 after restyling in 2002 received a slightly changed appearance. The standard equipment has become wider, and the luxury equipment has been supplemented with separate climate control for both front and rear passengers, a new instrument panel, and an upgraded steering rack.

Not for the city
The reduced efficiency of the braking system of the Cruiser Sotka is not a consequence of its malfunction; it is rather one of the features of this model. This inconvenience cannot affect traffic safety in highway or off-road conditions. Still, in urban conditions, such stretches can make you nervous.
The bulk of consumers unanimously agreed with the need to install 4-piston calipers in the front wheel brakes. This option does not differ in durability, but does not differ in costly repairs. As a result, the Toyota Land Cruiser J100, after 2004, received disc brakes on the rear axle.
Another malfunction of the brake system is associated with malfunctions of the main brake cylinder, as a rule, this occurs after a long mileage of the car. The result is characteristic failure of the brake pedal.
The price for a new GTZ unit is about 100,000 rubles, while a used one can be purchased for an amount from 20 to 70 thousand rubles. Experienced owners agree that repairing this unit is a hopeless task.

Experts talk about this car as a reliable and safe vehicle. It holds the road perfectly. He doesn’t even feel small irregularities. When accelerating along the highway, you get the feeling that the car is not moving, but floating.
The geometry of the car is calculated so correctly that on rural roads with large potholes from tractors, the Land Cruiser will not touch the ground with its bumper or bottom. And when you lightly press the gas pedal, the jeep takes off gracefully and easily. The gearbox shifts smoothly.
Automatic transmission, like manual transmission, is reliable. With annual maintenance, timely replacement of oil and filter elements, the boxes will last 200, or even 300 thousand kilometers without major repairs. The same applies to the engine.
The energy intensity of the suspension creates a feeling of permissiveness. Thus, the car is capable of briskly flying along an icy highway, maneuvering between snow-covered and treacherous roads. You'll have to worry about cornering, but the computer-controlled ABS will cope with any skidding.
Of course, the price of this used vehicle starts from 1 million 800 thousand rubles. This car is worth it.
Reliability of Toyota Land Cruiser J100
The main indicator of the reliability of any car is its condition after a long run. Among the Land Cruiser100 models, you can find quite a few examples whose mileage has exceeded the half-million mark. As a result, they look pretty good, although certain problems still arise.
The most problematic components of this model can undoubtedly be considered the transmission, as well as the suspension. It should be borne in mind that repairing these systems is very expensive. For this reason, experts advise not to rush to enjoy the low cost of a USED car.
The body of the Cruiser suffers more than others from time to time; metal parts are subject to active corrosion attacks. Therefore, in order to preserve the presentation of your car longer, it is recommended to systematically update the anti-corrosion coating.
You should also keep an eye on the cold circuit of the air conditioner, which is also actively attacked by corrosion. After 300,000 km, problems may arise with power windows or lock drives. Nevertheless, system failures in the electrical part of the “hundredth” Cruiser are not observed.

More details
- 1HZ-Z is an old diesel engine from the previous generation, which has long earned the reputation of being reliable. It produces 131 horsepower with 285 H*m of torque. Of course, the power is not enough, but the consumption is about 15 liters.
- 1HD-FE is a turbocharged diesel engine, also 4.2-liter, producing 204 horsepower with 430 units of torque. There are no problems with the power reserve on off-road.
- 1FZ-FE is an in-line naturally aspirated 6-cylinder petrol engine of the Land Cruiser 100, producing 224 horsepower and 370 H*m of torque. They like to install HBO on it, which eats up the resource a little. Volume – 4.5 liters.
- 2UZ-FE is the legendary and most popular engine, more than 50% of the market is with it. This is a 4.7-liter V8, to which phase shifters were added in the second restyling. The installation produces 235 horses with 434 units of torque. Here you will have to put up with only 25 liters of consumption.
Diesel
The 1HZ-Z is extremely reliable, its old design has stood the test of time. Many people are afraid of diesel engines because of poor Russian diesel fuel, but here engineers have redesigned it especially for us. Problems, of course, happen, but on long runs, for example, the fuel injection pump will require repairs after 250 thousand kilometers. In reality, it turns out that the equipment does not have time to break down, since the cylinder head is faced with chemical corrosion - funny and pleasant.
The turbocharged version 1HD-FE is more problematic. Its fuel equipment digests our diesel fuel worse, so the fuel injection pump of the “hundredth” will stop working 50,000 km earlier, and the injectors need to be cleaned every 40 thousand kilometers. The valves should also be adjusted periodically. The rest is reliable, even the notorious EGR valve becomes coked after 350 thousand kilometers, which, by the way, causes carbon deposits to form in the cylinder head.
You need to be more careful with the turbine: let it cool down after stopping, change the filter more often, and monitor the cooling system. In general, the cooling system is made with a reserve, but some people get carried away with this, forgetting to eliminate the minor problems that accumulate and get overheated.
Gasoline
The most popular engine is the 4.7-liter V8 2UZ-FE. This is no accident; its piston group can actually go a million kilometers, subject to periodic oil changes, timing belt changes, throttle cleaning and spark plug replacements. After half a million kilometers you need to change the Land Cruiser 100 catalysts, which will fall apart and fly into the piston group, have time to change them before they break down.
Here you also need to periodically adjust the valves. Otherwise, it is a perpetual motor, the minor problems of which do not count. If something serious happens, you can easily buy a contract engine for relatively little money.
The 1FZ-FE has a similar service life, requiring rare chain replacement and, again, valve adjustment. It is rare, and its consumption is much lower than the others.
Prices of original spare parts:
- timing belt – 3,400 rubles;
- belt tensioner - 2,500 rubles;
- ignition coil - 4,300 rubles;
- pump – 5,600 rub.
Chassis
The main distinguishing feature of the Cruiser J100 from the previous version of the J80 is the presence of an independent 2-link torsion bar suspension of the front wheels, which replaced the rigid axle. The measure taken definitely improved the parameters of driving comfort, although it was criticized by off-road enthusiasts.
The main reason for dissatisfaction was the decrease in the reliability of the structure, the service life of which was noticeably reduced. At the same time, silent blocks, like ball joints or shock absorbers, are capable of traveling up to 100,000 km, despite the harsh conditions of use.
The next reason for frustration is the sophisticated hydraulic suspension system (abbreviated as ANS), as well as the capricious active height adjustment system. When used off-road, the rear part tends to settle. It happens that the cause is a sensor that controls the level-position of the body, but in most cases the problems are not limited to this.
After 200,000 km, you should more often pay attention to shock absorbers, which can leak at any time. The estimated cost of one such unit is approximately 20,000 rubles. Leaks in shock absorbers increase the operating time of the “motor”, which quickly wears out. The next in line in terms of wear resistance are the membranes on hydraulic accumulators, on which ruptures form due to exhaustion.
Proven solution . To avoid multiple problems with torsion bar suspension, many car enthusiasts use the practice of replacing it with the spring suspension of the previous model. According to experts, the loss of movement comfort is felt insignificantly.
The next problem may be the steering rack, which can leak or start knocking after 200,000 km. After 300,000 km, the weak link will be the power steering pump. The cost of an original replacement can cost about 31,000 rubles, while the cost of an analogue one is 14,000 rubles.
There is also a repair kit priced at RUB 1,000. for a unit. However, this is more of an emergency measure than a solution to the problem. In addition, sometimes you have to deal with the problem of play on the shaft from the steering.
Crime
Oh, they love the hundredth Kruzak in the criminal world. For a long time, the car topped the ranking among car thieves. Stealing a Japanese SUV is a breeze. Access to the engine control unit is open, the box is unprotected, so invest in installing a normal anti-theft system. Also be sure to check the vehicle's entire legal history.
This is also due to the manufacturer himself, who installs a plate with the VIN number on the rivets. As you understand, creating a new sign and installing it instead of the old one is not a problem. The sticker on the doorway in the second restyling is also easy to fake. The real embossed number remains only on the frame.
The car is very liquid on the secondary market, many consider it as an investment that will lose minimal value. Demand and pricing are another factor that attracts hijackers.
Salon of the hundredth Land Cruiser
Inside is a tribute to conservatism, that is, an old style. In the latest restyle, the interior began to look nicer, but still a little old. When you start studying the functionality, you forget about the design, because good trim levels included leather upholstery, navigation, a rear view camera, electrically adjustable seats with memory, etc.
More space is a feature of an SUV, giving each passenger high comfort and a pleasant driving experience. Optionally, 2 more folding seats were installed in the back, that is, the interior became 7-seater.
The quality of materials and workmanship is perfect, everything stays in place for a long time and does not creak. Of course, the leather wears out over time, especially on the seats. If in front of you there is dead skin in the trash, most likely the car was used as a security car, where the condition did not matter. But it’s worth clarifying that the leather is now worn out due to high mileage; in fact, wear began at 300 thousand kilometers, which allows us to draw a positive conclusion about its quality.
The trunk lid is either one-piece, lifting up, or two hinged doors J105 (we will service it later). There are no questions about the volume - 830 liters, and with the rear sofa folded down you get 1370 liters with a high threshold.
Land cruiser 200 dimensions
The graphs show the dimensions of the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series - width, length and height. Data is shown for all available modifications, including, for some, the overall width with mirrors.
The smallest cars are marked in green, and the largest in red.
Below is a summary table of overall dimensions for all modifications of the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 frame SUV is sold on the Russian market with two powertrain options: a 4.6-liter gasoline V8 with a power of 309 hp. (439 Nm) and a 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel with output of 249 hp. (650 Nm). During the 2015 restyling, both engines were brought into compliance with the requirements of the Euro-5 standard. A diesel engine traditionally has a wide “shelf” of peak torque, developed in the range of 1600-2600 rpm. Both powerplants are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The car's all-wheel drive is a full-time Full-Time with an asymmetrical center differential (with a forced locking function) and a reduction gear. The suspension consists of a double-wishbone front structure and a solid rear axle. To reduce body sway, a KDSS roll suppression system with hydraulically controlled stabilizers is provided.
The naturally aspirated petrol “eight” installed under the hood of an SUV is famous for its remarkable “appetite”, consuming on average about 13.9 liters of fuel per 100 km of travel. The fuel consumption of the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 with a diesel engine is significantly less - 10.2 liters when driving in the combined cycle. Installing a 45-liter tank in addition to the basic 93-liter tank allows you to increase the vehicle's range to an impressive 1,200 km.
