Toyota Camry 2021 - review of the updated business class car


Price and design

Despite the rather attractive price of the Fulla, the base price will not look so attractive - about $29,000, especially considering that such a car is on a “rag”. Well, over the past generation, “fifty” cars asked for the same amount, and there was no end to customers. On the other hand, we invited several people to randomly name the price of our configuration, and most often they named about $50,000, which, you see, is quite good. There are four trim levels in total – there is plenty to choose from.

Those who can afford premium sedans from Germany will probably consider saving on small things inappropriate. But the huge army of Toyota Camry fans will quite possibly think otherwise. Why spend money on expensive finishing materials, if for the money saved you can get, for example, the largest projection display in the class. Or adaptive cruise control, which should theoretically keep the car in its lane. In practice, unfortunately, everything is not so great. On a flat road, the Camry easily follows the leader, but as soon as the road goes downhill, the “cruise” is lost and begins to accelerate the car. Of course, this is nothing more than a software bug that will definitely be fixed.

And even if they don’t fix it... Our main demand will still be for moderately equipped sedans with initial 4-cylinder units. The V6 version, the price tag of which makes you look at completely different cars, will be chosen by only a few. So most future owners of a Japanese sedan will not have the opportunity to get acquainted with the damp “chips”. And there is no point in grieving about this. The new Toyota Camry is good, first of all, as “just a car.” Interesting design, pleasant handling, spacious interior. And the price! Yes, yes, Camry has practically not risen in price with the change of generations. So there is no need to guess who will take the place of leader in the business class sedan segment by the end of the year.

Anyone who dares to pay the specified amount for a Camry, even as a base model, will not be disappointed, because compared to the previous brick-shaped design, the new car is more than attractive. Compared to other Japanese cars, the newcomer to the business class looks incredibly graceful thanks to the curves of the body and the large hood with stampings. In profile, the car completely resembles the flagship of the entire corporation - Lexus LS.

The dynamic silhouette of the Camry literally obliged the designers to lay the rear window almost horizontally. In winter, when we tested the car, a large amount of snow was falling, which then turned into ice, and it was quite difficult to clear it off, and the view through the interior mirror was hampered because of this. In addition, the trunk opening does not have any side near the edge of the rear window, and all the snow flies inside. As long as it doesn't melt, you can throw it away, but what if it rains? In front, the spectacular long lower lip of the front bumper tends to get caught either on the snow parapet or on the edge, so you have to take this into account while driving.

Let's move on to the language of numbers. With the change of generation, Camry has grown: by 35 millimeters in length and 15 millimeters in width. The wheelbase has also increased by 50 millimeters. Although the car has become lower by as much as 50 millimeters, there is no need to worry about this.

Having seriously worked on the exterior and interior, the Japanese did not ignore the technical characteristics. If the front suspension has changed evolutionarily, the rear “multi-link” has been redesigned almost completely. The result is noticeable from the very first meters - Toyota Camry began to feel more confident in turns. And the car steers noticeably sharper than before. Moreover, you can forget about the former “cottoniness” because of the new power steering installed on the steering rack. And although the Japanese sedan does not provide the excellent feedback that you can get on BMW and Audi cars, a big step forward has definitely been made.

On the Russian market, the Toyota Camry 2021 is presented with three power units: 2 liters (150 horsepower), 2.5 liters (181 horsepower) and 3.5 liter six (249 horsepower). The version with the top engine will be equipped with an 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission, while sedans with other engines will receive a 6-speed automatic transmission. In other words, the new Camry received the same engines and gearboxes as before. Which is not so bad, since the reliability of the tested units will remain at the same high level.

Salon

The interior design of the new car, especially compared to the chopped and rough style of the previous version, is delightful and also a bit reminiscent of the lines in Lexus. Thanks to the wide and high central tunnel, it seems that you are sitting quite low, as if in a car, and all the controls are at your fingertips, including a convenient lever for switching gearbox modes. In the car, they moved away from cheap imitation of wood panels and moved on to imitation of panels made of... a material still unknown to mankind. But in any case, it looks fresh and stylish, although our test driver didn’t like the feel of them. There are no complaints about visibility - the space around the car is clearly visible. By the way, the exterior mirrors were moved to the doors, which not only gave the design a fresh breath, but also had a positive effect on visibility in blind sectors. And to compensate for the insufficient view through the interior mirror, Toyota has a rear view camera with a good picture.

On the run

There are no changes under the hood of the car - still the same 2.5 liter inline four. from 181 l. With. power and 231 Nm of torque. It is paired with a classic 6-speed automatic transmission. There is no alternative! But the car excels not in power, but in smoothness. Even from a standstill, the Camry moves off so smoothly that, despite looking through the window, you may not even notice the start of movement. This is twice as interesting as the previous generation, which, with the same equipment, did not have such smoothness. Of course, if your friends drive German business sedans, it will be difficult for you to explain to them that 181 hp. With. with a 2.5-liter engine this is normal. But while moving you will not feel any lack of traction. Even up to 120 km/h. The engine picks up speed very quickly. The most important thing is that it accelerates to “hundreds” in less than 10 seconds, and that’s good. Given this volume, and even taking into account its not the newest design, they readily believed that real fuel consumption would be higher than the declared 11.5 l./100 km. But in practice it turned out that in city mode it rarely rises above 11. Our average consumption was 10.7 l/100 km.

On the move, the Toyota Camry once again emphasizes its relationship with the premium brand Lexus - the movement is as smooth and measured as possible. Unlike the power unit, the suspension has undergone changes: while everything in the front is inherited, a new double-wishbone design is used in the rear. Perhaps not everyone will like the reduction in ground clearance, but 15 cm, which we calculated through practical measurements, is still more than sufficient for a passenger sedan. In the end, additional reserve in winter can be added by installing other wheels: with a standard size of 235/45 R18, 225/50 will also be installed in the arches. If someone wants even more softness from the comfortable Camry suspension, he will be pleased with this rearrangement. What can I say, the car simply has to behave expensively.

Toyota Camry 2021 - interior

Thanks to a redesigned layout and a lower driving position, it will still be comfortable even for those whose height is close to the 2-meter mark. In general, hardly anyone has encountered complaints about inconvenience while driving a Camry. Owners of the previous generation sedan criticized something else - the old-fashioned interior. Which was radically redesigned for the new Toyota. Gone is the boring symmetry of the center console.

One thing can be said about the second row of seats: it’s spacious. One word can describe the trunk - roomy. However, I want to stay on the trunk a little longer. And all because the Japanese saved money on it. The upholstery material seems budget (which is not bad). The shelf that covers the underground space with the spare wheel does not seem very strong. The Japanese also did not bother themselves with loops, hooks and other fasteners to avoid the free movement of packages and bags in the trunk - unnecessary expenses.
