In many ways, it is the seats that determine the distance that can be covered without stopping. During the trip to the sea, we were sincerely grateful for the thoughtful profile of the seats - they provide the necessary balance of comfort and safety, because driver fatigue directly affects an adequate assessment of the road situation. Here we also find a new, very successful upholstery - perforated leather in a brown shade. It is pleasant to the touch and holds the body well. The seats themselves are electrically adjustable with a large range and memory. The car can be used by a married couple.

The readings of the new instrument panel with three-dimensional arrows and the enlarged on-board computer are perfectly readable. The ergonomics of the driver's seat are thought out to the smallest detail: buttons, switches and levers, the center armrest and air ducts - everything is intuitive and naturally located. Materials that are pleasant to the eye and touch are everywhere - leather, wood and soft plastic. Without pathos, but in harmony. The front panel was endowed with a 9-inch central monitor with the ability to display readings from the on-board computer, climate control, audio system, navigation, all-round cameras and other data. The picture from it is easily perceived both on a sunny day and in the dark, thanks to the special night mode.

The Cruiser's hold, access to which is achieved according to the classic scheme of halves opening up and down, is striking in scale. We felt awkward putting bags from the supermarket in it, but the mountain bike and large suitcase we took with us on our trip to Sochi looked quite appropriate. At the same time, there is so much space that it was possible to double the amount of luggage. In our case, the car was not equipped with a third row of seats, but it is easy to turn the Cruiser into a seven-seater minibus - the necessary fasteners are present. In this configuration, you can already go with a large group of friends out of town or to a nightclub. Excellent in any situation.

The function of automatically maintaining a given speed has proven its effectiveness, although at first I did not trust it: I preferred to speed through difficult places, relying on permanent all-wheel drive with a Torsen center differential.

However, the 1VD-FTV turbodiesel is already very economical. It received a different electronic control unit and a pair of particulate filters, which made it possible not only to reduce fuel consumption and increase power, but also to raise the engine’s environmental class to Euro 5. The latter is important, since environmental standards are being raised in Russia and certification of cars to Euro-4 standards will soon become impossible.

The Japanese promised that after such a difficult test this mode would definitely be added. In the meantime, I carefully crawl in a rut (the road does not allow driving otherwise), switching to “rocks and dirt” and selecting the second speed of the Crawl Control system (there are five in total). MTS now has an Auto mode, which is activated automatically when Crawl Control is turned on and the driver presses on the gas. The electronics, collecting information from the sensors, decide on their own how to operate the active traction control system: it changes the accelerator settings, the engine and gearbox control program. Take your foot off the gas and the MTS switches to one of five previously selected driving modes. But you can’t make mistakes yourself. If you don’t have time to turn the steering wheel in time and return the car to the right path, you immediately find yourself buried in deep snow up to the very sides. There is no way forward! Therefore, the selector is in R, fortunately Crawl Control also works when reversing. My colleagues dismounted, actively pushed the car, and I got out of the snowdrift.

Russia traditionally loves full-size SUVs. For their comfort, powerful engines and excellent maneuverability. The most popular model in this niche for many years in a row has been the “Land Cruiser 100”. In terms of sales, it was more than twice as big as its closest competitors. And now the debut of a new generation of the famous model - “Land Cruiser 200”. Buyers greeted him with enthusiasm - by the start of sales, about 5,000 orders had been collected. This is a lot for a relatively expensive car! To understand what caused the buying boom and whether the new Toyota SUV is so good, our correspondent went to meet him in the Canaries.

IN THE MODERN automotive industry, the life cycle of one generation of a model is on average six years. All companies, with rare exceptions, comply with it. The list of exceptions included the Toyota Land Cruiser 100, which lasted on the assembly line for almost ten years. All these years, the flagship SUV of the Japanese auto giant has been highly popular among buyers.

The new “Land Cruiser 200” at first glance seems to be just a restyled version of the “weaving”. But Sadayoshi Koyari, the author of the development, quickly dispelled my doubts, saying that his group had been designing the “Land Cruiser 200” for 4.5 years. Quite a lot. And there is an explanation for this. The “Cruiser” is designed for operation in difficult, sometimes harsh conditions. With this approach, the endurance and reliability of the car come to the fore. Every part of the machine, every screw must be strong and durable. And for this, when developing a model, it is necessary to take into account every little thing. In short, measure seven times, cut once. And only then put it on the conveyor. “Land Cruiser 200” is made exactly according to this principle.

What makes an SUV truly tough? First of all, the frame structure. Contrary to modern trends, the body of the “200” still rests on the frame. Its torsional rigidity has increased by 1.4 times compared to the previous model, and its bending rigidity has increased by 1.2 times. This means that there should be no problems with the strength of the machine. The route was laid out in such a way that most of it was truly off-road. Fuerteventura, where the test took place, is an island of volcanic origin belonging to the Canary archipelago. The relief on it changes with kaleidoscopic frequency. Just now I was driving across the plain, and now there are sand dunes all around. Another ten minutes of walking, and we are already in the mountains, generously strewn with tuff. This is not a road, but a punishment - solid stones! Some are the size of a football. But Land Cruiser 200 is indifferent to such a test. Its suspension allows for a lot. Toyota has equipped the new SUV with switchable anti-roll bars. On a flat road, they do their job honestly, preventing the massive body from leaning excessively in corners. But as soon as we went off-road, the electronics, “sensing” that the wheels were in different planes, turned off the stabilizers, allowing the suspension travel to be significantly increased. No matter what pits the Land Cruiser 200 drove through, its tires never came off the surface.

As before, the “Cruiser” is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive with a reduction gear. When driving in a straight line on a dry surface, the torque between the front and rear wheels is distributed in a ratio of 40:60. But the Torsen limited slip differential is capable of changing the degree of locking. In a gravel turn, to prevent drift, the Toyota acquired greater rear-wheel drive (ratio 30:70). But I went too fast and the car started to skid. Nothing bad happened - “Torsen” redistributed the moment between the axles equally, and the car quickly stabilized. Very predictable behavior.

At some point I completely relaxed and stopped watching the road. And he was immediately punished - he did not have time to slow down before the bend in the route. For a moment the car lifted off the ground and flopped back down. The suspension didn’t even choke – no breakdown! By the way, the chassis layout remained without fundamental changes - independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle. This design is currently the most optimal for a real all-terrain vehicle. In addition to the proven chassis, the “200th” also received something new - a set of electronic systems for more confident off-road driving. For example, “Multi-Terrain ABS”. Depending on the driving conditions, it automatically selects the braking mode. When I drove through dense sand, the car “felt” it (through the accelerator, longitudinal acceleration and wheel speed sensors). When braking, the wheels blocked slightly and raked up a roll of sand in front of them, speeding up the deceleration.

In terms of standard equipment, the “Land Cruiser 200” is not inferior to SUVs of premium brands.

It is noteworthy that the Russian versions of the Land Cruiser 200 do not have pneumatic elements in the suspension that automatically level the ground clearance. Apparently, Toyota decided on such a simplification for marketing reasons. After all, sales of the Lexus LX570 (luxury version of the Cruiser) will soon begin in Russia. This is where the pneumatics will be installed.

True, the dynamics confused me at first. You press the accelerator, but the car is in no hurry to accelerate. Only after a second and a half, the new six-speed automatic transmission goes a couple of steps lower. As it turned out, he was set to an economical driving mode. As soon as you pressed the “Power” button next to the selector, everything fell into place. “Land Cruiser 200” has acquired the dynamics it deserves. Starting from a standstill to 100 km/h took him 8.6 seconds. The diesel version accelerates even faster than the gasoline version.
