Toyota Fielder hybrid: characteristics, review, review

In 2000, the Japanese company Toyota introduced an interesting station wagon, the Corolla Fielder. It bears little resemblance to the classic Corolla model. A modified body, a new design, and other technical characteristics - all this created a completely new car, which retained only a piece of the legendary Corolla. Toyota also released this model in a hybrid version. We will tell you about the Toyota Fielder hybrid below.

Exterior of Toyota Fielder hybrid

The appearance of the Toyota Fielder Hybrid is ambiguous. Much of the exterior is carried over from the Corolla Axio sedan. At the front there is a large air intake covered with a grille. Complexly shaped headlights extend onto the line of the body. At the bottom of the wheel arches, in the recess, the foglights are located.

Fielder's profile doesn't particularly stand out. The wheel arches have the usual lip, and the familiar Hybrid lettering is placed near the front door on the left side.

At the rear we are greeted by a neat tailgate. The headlights from the body neatly fit onto it. A spoiler with “fake optics” is installed on top. These are just reflectors without LEDs inside.

Interior of Toyota Fielder hybrid

The interior decoration of the cabin turned out to be rich. Ahead we are greeted by a liquid crystal display of the multimedia system.

Salon

The basic version only comes with an analogue instrument panel and a three-spoke steering wheel. It is worth noting that the steering wheel is upholstered in leather in all trim levels. The audio system consists of 2 speakers.

Front seats

There is no adaptive cruise control. The car has air conditioning.

The interior dimensions are as follows:

  • length – 1.945 m;
  • width – 1.43 m;
  • height – 1.2 m.

So far the impression is good about Toyota Fielder

I’ll say right away that I bought the car in the fall of 2021. The car rolled off the assembly line in 2009. Over the entire period it has covered 145 thousand km. So far, I haven’t had to deal much with repairs and other pleasures of owning a used car.

First, the basic introductions:

  1. Manual Transmission.
  2. Restyled version.
  3. 1.5 liter engine with 110 horses.
  4. Consumption is 5.5 in the city and 8 on the highway.

In general, there will be no particular enthusiasm or negativity in the review of the Toyota Fielder. An ordinary budget-mid-price Japanese. The salon after our basins seems great, but it’s clearly not a fountain. Shumka is in trouble. After 100-120 km/h the noise in the cabin is simply terrible. At least get some earplugs.

Among the advantages of this particular model I can highlight:

  • long-stroke soft mechanics;
  • improved optics (a friend also has a Phil, but 2001, there is something to compare with);
  • a more comfortable body compared to the previous model (the steering wheel is adjustable for reach and height, the seats feel more comfortable);
  • The sensors show things more clearly, you don’t have to look closely.

In the review of Toyota Fielder, one cannot help but note a minus. The plastic in the cabin is clearly cheaper than in the pre-restyling version.

In general, the station wagon is quite normal. Walking is simple, you can do a lot yourself. So far I have only changed the anthers on the front struts. There were no problems.

Type of hybrid installation Toyota Fielder hybrid

The Toyota Fielder uses a hybrid system – THS II with an electronically controlled transmission. The car uses a series-parallel operating circuit of the installation. It includes an internal combustion engine and one electric motor. The design is complemented by a planetary gearbox and a variable speed transmission. This allows for the most precise transmission of torque.

The presence of a planetary power flow reducer optimizes the amount of energy directed to both the generator and the drive wheels. The electricity generated by the generator is used both to power the electric motor and to recharge the battery.

History of development and production of Toyota Corolla Fielder

Toyota Corolla Fielder belongs to the class of medium-sized models and has a station wagon layout in a five-door version, as well as technical characteristics corresponding to modern cars of this class.

In Japan and other countries, the Toyota brand is widely popular due to its positive qualities of a combination of reasonable price, capacity, efficiency, reliability, practicality and modern body design. The 2015 Toyota Corolla models are already in their 11th generation, having undergone repeated modernization.

The Toyota Corolla Fielder was put into operation in 2000 and over the years the car has undergone periodic modernization: in 2002, changes were made to the suspension structure, in 2004 the body and interior trim, as well as the interior design, were restyled.

In 2009, changes were made to improve safety measures for the driver and passengers - side airbags were installed. A multifunctional monitor was installed on the front panel, air purification filters were installed in the air conditioner, a headlight luminous flux regulator was installed, which allows automatic control of headlights, and a CVT was installed on the Corolla Fielder, speed characteristics were improved.

The body of a sedan class car allows both passengers and the driver to feel free in the car interior, and also, if necessary, to transport luggage of a sufficiently large volume. If necessary, the interior of the Toyota Corolla Fielder can be transformed to increase the volume of the cargo compartment specifically for the transportation of large items.

Corolla Fielder has been modernized several times during its production and has more than 40 variants, currently equipped with a manual 5-speed gearbox or CVT. For fans of fast driving, a Z Aerotourer version is available, equipped with a powerful engine.

Technical characteristics of Toyota Fielder hybrid

The developers were able to adjust the characteristics of the car to the hybrid version. The dimensions of the car have not changed.

The main technical data are presented in the table.

Body dimensions (length/width/height) 4.4 m/ 1.695 m/ 1.475 m

Gas engine

Under the hood of the Fielder Hybrid is a four-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine 1NZ-FXE. Volume – 1.5 liters. Maximum power reaches 74 hp. at 4800 rpm. Torque is 111 Nm.

The unit is equipped with electronic direct fuel injection. The stop/start system is responsible for the timely start or inclusion of the electric motor.

For information! The hybrid version comes with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive options are available only in petrol versions.

Electric motor

A 1LM synchronous AC electric motor is also paired with the gasoline engine. Power is 45 kW at 169 Nm. It is also located under the hood.

The car starts on an electric motor. You can use it as the main traction motor, but it won't last long. The “electric vehicle” mode is limited to 60 km/h, after which the internal combustion engine will automatically connect.

Battery and mileage

The car is equipped with a nickel-metal hydride battery, which contains 20 cells (6.5 Ah each). It can withstand up to 1500 full charge/discharge cycles. The function of the VBB is to power the electric motor and accumulate charge during regenerative braking.

When fully charged and following the speed limit, the car can travel no more than 1.5 km on an electric charge. The cost of replacing the VVB will be about 60,000 rubles.

The standard 12-Volt battery for powering the on-board system has a capacity of 40 Ah. The maximum starting current is 350 A. Both batteries are located behind the rear row of seats.

Fuel consumption per 100 km and dynamics

Toyota Fielder Hybrid has average dynamics. Acceleration to hundreds occurs in 11 seconds. Maximum speed – 180 km/h.

In the city, the station wagon consumes 3.9 liters of gasoline, and on the highway the consumption decreases and amounts to 3.3 liters of fuel. In the combined cycle, 2.9 liters of fuel are consumed.

To reduce fuel consumption, the following recommendations are suitable:

  • Avoid sudden acceleration of the car, start driving smoothly and confidently.
  • Rapid changes in speed increase fuel consumption by 20%, so it is better to choose a quiet driving mode.
  • Turn off the engine when parked for more than 1 minute, as idling increases fuel consumption than when starting and driving.
  • Selecting a distance when driving in heavy traffic. A sharp decrease in speed and then an increase leads to additional fuel costs.
  • Choice of convenient parking. Reverse maneuvers require additional gasoline consumption.
  • Slow down the vehicle using the power unit. Such braking will allow you to gradually reduce the used engine power with a decrease in fuel consumption.

Hybrid reliability, breakdowns

The Toyota Safety Sense system with expanded functionality is responsible for the reliability of the hybrid.

Left view

It included:

  • ABS, EBD, ESP, TCS, HAC systems;
  • descent/ascent assistant;
  • obstacle recognition with emergency braking;
  • road mark tracking;
  • rain sensor and automatic wipers;
  • Automatic door locking when driving.

Advantages of the hybrid Fielder: high efficiency, spacious trunk, decent functionality, good quality finishing materials.

Disadvantages of the station wagon: rather weak characteristics, lack of all-wheel drive in the hybrid version, outdated drum brakes on the rear wheels, low ground clearance.

Among the breakdowns, it is worth highlighting overheating and loss of power to the battery. The main cause of this problem is the high-voltage wire that runs from under the hood through the bottom directly to the VVB. Given the low ground clearance and Russian roads, its damage is just a matter of time. There are two ways out of this situation: either install protection or promptly check it for wear.

Car reviews

The reviews of the Japanese car Toyota Corolla Fielder from almost everyone who owns it are positive.

Irkutsk, Konstantin

I came across this Fielder when I was completely desperate to find a suitable station wagon. After calling the owner, I took the device that determines the thickness of the paintwork and went to inspect the car. The temperature was minus 20 degrees, well, not the most comfortable for shopping.

Surprisingly, the device showed that the car, produced in 2004, had never been painted, and other little things: a worn bumper, a loose tailgate mount and the absence of door sills did not bother me, especially since I am not cranky and can do it myself. We took a ride with the owner and listened to the engine. Then we stopped at the service station, determined the amount of investment, bargained as expected, and the car was purchased.

I'm happy with the purchase, I like the car.

The front is on spacers, the ground clearance is high. The 4VD drive drags perfectly, I specifically tested it in snowdrifts, but here we must not be fanatical - it’s just a clutch, not Full Time.

The appearance of the car is pleasing, and the transformation of the interior is pleasantly surprising - there is plenty of space, you can safely transport household items and even skis.

One thing is annoying: the visibility due to the wide A-pillars is insufficient; at first I did not notice pedestrians. And one more thing: there is no door locking after a speed of 20 km/h, as on previous Toyotas, and gasoline consumption is high, but I think that in the summer it will be less.

Vladimir from Novosibirsk

Toyota Corolla - this brand is known to everyone. Immediately after the purchase, I changed the oil in the gearbox and engine, and they did an alignment at the service station. I bought the car in 2008, after restyling, and it has covered 60 thousand km. I can only say good things about it: it starts up without problems in winter, it’s a comfortable and reliable car, fuel consumption when driving around the city is about 8 liters, and on the highway – 5 liters. In four years I covered 100 thousand km and sold it for the same price as I bought it. Friends, take only Toyota, it is practically indestructible, you just need to take care of the engine and change the oil on time. One drawback did appear - vibration when braking. It can be easily fixed - have a turner sharpen the brake disc or buy a new one.

Alexander from Veloyarsk

In 2013, I bought a 2004 Toyota Corolla Fielder, 1.5 liter engine with 4WD drive. Over the past 14 months, “Filya” and I have been in different situations, the engine never let us down, and the all-wheel drive pulled us out of places that are better not to remember. I service the car myself, I have used several different brands before and learned how to do it. I’m changing the silent blocks, shock absorber bushings and rear links on my Fila.

The engine of my favorite is unpretentious and does not cause any problems. Only the idle speed fluctuates - now I’ll clean the throttle valve and the speed will settle down. I like the large and comfortable interior even more; it is dark in color with marble inserts.

PS Sorry, I remembered one drawback - in winter it is impossible to warm up the engine properly at idle speed.

Nikita from Tomsk

I spent a long time looking for and choosing a car, but it happened to be nearby; a friend offered his 2004 Corolla Fielder at a price that was right for me. I took it and never regretted it - not a car, but a fairy tale.

The car picks up speed confidently and dynamically, excellent maneuverability, a spacious trunk and soft plastic panels, starting in any frost - all this somehow charmed me.

Of course, there were breakdowns, but not critical ones. Mostly consumables had to be changed. Prices, naturally, bite, but what to do - demand determines supply. There was no major investment in the car. I drove it for three and a half years and exchanged it for an SUV, and now I regret it. I'm looking for a Fielder again, but now I want a 1.8 engine and a 4WD drive.

Pavel from Ulan-Ude

I purchased this Toyota Corolla Fielder on the Ussuri market. She ran 70 thousand km. The condition of the car was excellent, and I chose it to work as a taxi. Now, after running 350 thousand km, we can say with confidence: it has proven itself perfectly, it was only necessary to change the oil on time.

By 250 thousand km, thrust decreased and detonation appeared when refueling with bad fuel. At 300 thousand km, the speed became unstable, and twitching appeared during transient conditions. It turned out that I just needed to clean the throttle valves.

The manual transmission on the Fielder is excellent, no complaints. The chassis was changed every year, fortunately China is nearby. I think the weak point is the steering rack and front silent blocks. From my own experience I will say that the car is excellent and reliable, only the Probox, which is considered the “younger brother” of the Corolla, is better than it.

Sergey from Vladivostok

Once I was giving a ride to a friend’s house and saw that he had a 2003 Fielder, 1.5 liter engine, 4WD. I asked for a ride and was inspired to buy the same car. I liked the overview and the large internal volume, but the automatic machine added its own drop of ointment. Therefore, I decided to buy a car with a 1.8 liter engine.

I must say, the car is very comfortable, as for the variator, even with the 1.8 engine it is a little dull, but if you switch to manual mode, it picks up speed very quickly.

Consumption measured: on average about 7.8 liters per hundred km. A gas tank with a capacity of 50 liters lasts me for a week. So far I have only positive emotions from the car, and I don’t regret at all that I bought this Filya.

Operation in winter

There are no problems with winter trips in the Fielder hybrid. In the cold season, the heat flow from the hybrid installation is directed directly into the cabin, and in the summer it is discharged outside. The cabin becomes warm after just a couple of minutes.

The battery loses almost no power at low temperatures. If you are not going to use the car for more than 3 days, then place it in a heated parking lot or in an insulated garage.

Important! When the hybrid is idle in the cold season, the battery begins to gradually lose power and resource intensity. There is a high probability that after two weeks the battery will be in critical condition and will need to be replaced.

The developers also provided heated seats and steering wheel, heated rear view mirrors and rear window. The wipers are equipped with a special precipitation sensor, so they turn on automatically when necessary.

Options and prices of Toyota Fielder hybrid

The Toyota Fielder hybrid station wagon is sold in three trim levels – X, G and S. The basic configuration X was discussed above, and all the others are presented with additional functionality. The price of the basic configuration is 1,308,000 rubles.

Package G includes:

  • LED optics (in the initial stage – xenon);
  • heated rear view mirrors;
  • multifunction steering wheel and improved audio system with 4 speakers;
  • keyless entry system;
  • climate control.

The cost of the G package is 1,380,000 rubles.

The S package does not have many differences. The main features are full leather upholstery and front row sports seats with lateral support, adaptive headrests and adjustment.

The S package will cost 1,490,000 rubles.

Reference! All prices are for new cars. The transfer was made from foreign currency.

Reviews of Toyota Fielder hybrid

Review from Andrey

I purchased Fielder from local companies in the Far East. I haven’t noticed any problems yet, although I’ve only been driving for 6 months. Among the advantages I would like to note are efficiency, design and functionality. The only negative is the ground clearance, so you can’t drive it off-road. But for a country road it is quite enough.

Review from Nikolay

A year after purchasing the hybrid, everything was fine. Over the entire period of use, I noted a couple of shortcomings. The ground clearance didn't suit me, so I had to install spacers. I was pleased with the great functionality, trunk volume and stylish design. Considering that I got the car for a little more than 700,000 rubles, I am happy with the purchase.

Review of Toyota Fielder: tired of repairs

Before I had kids, I always drove sedans. However, the news about his wife's pregnancy forced him to reconsider his view of things. I sold Vista and started looking for a more suitable option. After all the ordeals of searching, communicating with outbid dealers and spending hours in diagnostic centers, I settled on Phil.

I've owned it for several years. There were no problems during the first year. I only changed the oil and filters in the car. In my review of the Toyota Fielder, I would like to note its good economy. On the highway, 100 km consumes 6 liters, in the city the figure rises to 10. The engine is a 1.5 liter petrol engine. The car produces 110 horses. Not much, but enough for me. I have always advocated a quiet ride.

In the second year I noticed problems with gasoline. A lot began to be spent on fuel. The number of trips and range have not increased. The reason is a rotten neck. As a bonus, I caught a rotten threshold. Slowly the car begins to crumble:

  • oil leak;
  • the machine slows down (slows down the shifts, “kicks”);
  • the chassis creaks when driving.

In January 2021 the engine started. I had to change the coil. After the repair it worked fine. I will sell it in the future. Apparently, the car no longer takes out its own. In general, my review of the Toyota Fielder is twofold. The car is spacious and economical, but repairs are a problem. Maybe I came across such a copy.
