Engine life Toyota Highlander 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.5

The breadth of design thought by Toyota bosses is truly amazing. There is simply no form factor in the world that Japanese designers have not had a hand in creating. In 2000, the new Highlander crossover clocked its first kilometers on the speedometer. It should be noted here that in the Land of the Rising Sun and on the Australian continent the car was sold under a different name - Kluger, due to the fact that the rights to the Highlander trademark there belonged to another Japanese auto giant - Hyundai. Therefore, Highlander, as the name of the modification sounds in translation, was intended for export sale.

Highlander is a sleek newcomer to the crossover market

Price

Some will be surprised, but this is an expensive SUV.
The average price of used cars with mileage above 200,000 km is 500,000 rubles, while models costing more than 700 thousand rubles are often found. The reason seems to be reliability, which is highly valued by owners. Car maintenance is relatively cheap, and many things can be done by hand. In the end, this is a great family car that will last a long time, because it is unlikely that the entire list of problems will come out on one car. If you were thinking about buying a Toyota Highlander XU20, buy it and, most importantly, maintain it properly and don’t abuse it off-road, so that it will serve you longer.

Features of power units on Toyota Highlander

The Highlander engines described below were also installed on a large number of Toyota vehicles. Among them were SUVs, minivans, and SUVs. The engines did not have any serious shortcomings as such, but required increased attention from the car owner.

Here you will find out which batteries are suitable for Highlander.

Series AZ

The AZ series are four-cylinder engines. They successfully replaced the modification starting with the letter “S”. These lightweight engines have an aluminum alloy cylinder block and a cast cylinder head. It is also made of aluminum and equipped with two camshafts.

Attention! A torn timing belt on AZ engines threatens to bend the valves. Therefore, experienced mechanics advise arriving for maintenance on time and monitoring the appearance of cracks and chips on the timing chain.

The technical characteristics of AZ are as follows:

These engines are popularly called “square”, as they have an equal piston stroke and a cylinder diameter of 86 mm.

The main disadvantage of these engines is the lack of cylinder boring capabilities. Also, these engines are not subject to major overhaul. The weak points include the balancing mechanism made of polymer gears. Despite the fact that it reduces the overall noise of the motor, the gears wear out quickly.

Valve clearances are adjusted at the factory using special pushers. And usually car owners refrain from adjustment procedures because the price for it is high. And the process itself is extremely complex.

Instead of withdrawal! With proper care, this motor is durable, resourceful and powerful.

MZ Series

This modification replaced a series of motors called VZ. In essence, the structure of the engines remained the same, some shortcomings were eliminated. The all-aluminum design of the engine frightened many car owners and seemed unreliable for Russian roads and the extreme use of power units in the north of the country.

These motors do not tolerate overheating and even more do not like low temperatures. Other disadvantages are strong carbon formation and coking of waste from processing the fuel mixture.

The power of MZ series engines starts from 200 horsepower and ends at 234. The compression ratio varies from 10 to 10.8. The recommended fuel for Highlander engines is 95, in rare cases - 92.

On all engines with a VVTi system, valves bend when the timing chain breaks. The cylinders cannot be bored, and the unit itself can only be completely replaced if it fails.

Since these engines are already considered old, among the disadvantages that the car owner will encounter are:

Instead of withdrawal! Such engines are good for traveling in rural areas, on a picnic at the seaside or in the forest. But for serious off-road competitions it is better not to use this engine.

GR Series

The GR series became famous for the release of six-cylinder power units. It was equipped with forged connecting rods, fuel injection, cast camshaft and intake manifold.

Attention! GR replaced the then popular MZ.

Since the engines are powerful, their fuel consumption is correspondingly high. In the city it reaches 14 liters per 100 km, and when driving on the highway it drops to 10 liters.

The lifespan of such a motor is estimated at 300 thousand kilometers, and with proper care it will last half a million. The power of the power unit varies from 240 to 360 horsepower. The cylinder block material is completely cast from aluminum alloy.

These motors are equipped with hydraulic compensators. Therefore, the car owner will not need to constantly adjust the thermal clearances of the valves.

Malfunctions that are often observed and disliked by car owners include:

Conclusion! Otherwise, GR series engines are considered powerful and reliable.

A special word should be said about the GR-FXE series. These are hybrid power units. They work according to the Atkinson cycle. Fuel consumption is much lower than other models in this series.

Experienced mechanics do not recommend tuning FXE modifications. When flashing an electronic control unit, the effect of tuning will be unpredictable. Therefore, it is not worth the risk.

Restyling Toyota Highlander U40

Toyota Land Cruiser dimensions, weight and ground clearance

In the middle of the production cycle, in 2010, the style of the Toyota Highlander II U40 was updated, but the technical component of the car remained the same.

After restyling, the crossover officially went on sale in the post-Soviet space. Only a modified version with a 3.5 liter engine was available in the Prestige and Luxury trim levels.

Restyling of the Toyota Highlander II U40 was manifested in the following:

  • changing the appearance of the false radiator grille;
  • modification of light blocks - a fog lamp appeared in the model adapted for Russia;
  • ground clearance increased to 206 mm.

The car was produced in this modification until 2013.

What engines were produced with different generations of Toyota Highlander?

Toyota Highlander went on sale in 2000. It was then that it was first shown to the general public at the New York motorcycle show. This SUV quickly became the flagship of the Toyota Motor Corporation brand, reaching a leading position in sales in many countries around the world.

The crossover was loved by the public due to its reliability, practicality and comfort. There was nothing unnecessary in the car. The Toyota Camry base was perfect for a crossover. The car was controllable, nimble and comfortable.

Good dynamic performance was a reflection of the power of the power unit. The first generation, which was produced until 2008, had the following engine types:

  • 2.4 liters for 155 horsepower;
  • 3 liters for 223 horsepower;
  • 3.3 liters for 232 horsepower.

The second generation of the SUV, which appeared in 2008, became equally popular. The car was presented at the Chicago Auto Show. In addition to the army of fans whose enthusiasm for the first generation has not cooled down, the fans of this model were joined by several thousand more car owners from those who did not refuse to acquire a frisky family crossover. In the updated version, the engines were also modernized:

  • 2.7 liters for 187 horsepower;
  • 3.5 liters for 277 horsepower;
  • 3.3 liter, hybrid engine with 233 horsepower.

Toyota Highlanders only had gasoline engines. Each car was equipped with an automatic gearbox. Moreover, the top modifications of the second generation were also all-wheel drive. In most cases, models were equipped only with front-wheel drive.

Here you can read about Highlander engine models.

Toyota Highlander in the 10s

In 2010, they decided to transform the Toyota Highlander crossover by restyling it. The new product was shown in Moscow. The Russian history of the crossover began with the same motorcycle show - the car began to be produced on the territory of the Russian Federation. Before this, Toyota Highlander was not officially sold in Russia.

Nevertheless, for the Russian market the choice of configurations for the new product was not particularly large. Officially, it was possible to buy a car only with a 3.5-liter engine. This is a V-shaped “six” coupled with an automatic gearbox, which came only in the two highest trim levels: “Lux” and “Prestige”.

The restyled model lasted three years. In 2013, the third generation was shown in New York, which began to be supplied to the wider market in 2014 and sold as a model range for this particular year.

The car was distinguished by its increased dimensions and a large number of additional electronic assistants. The Toyota Highlander has never had such equipment before.

In addition to electronic filling and increased dimensions, the car has become faster and at the same time more comfortable. A third row of seats appeared, and up to 8 people could fit in the car.

In 2021, the car was transformed with restyling. This was necessary because global trends in the appearance of cars have changed, and Toyota has always kept up with the times so as not to lose its position in the global automobile market among its competitors.

The end of the decade was marked by the release of the fourth generation. The car has radically changed its appearance and internal equipment, both from a technical point of view and from the point of view of convenience for the driver and passengers.

Here you will learn about what the car looked like over the years.

General technical specifications

The 2021 Toyota Highlander is a three-row, seven- or eight-seat crossover with a length of 4.95 mm, width and height of 1.93 and 1.73 mm, respectively.

Some other characteristics of this car:

  • wheelbase – 2850 mm;
  • ground clearance - 200 mm;
  • curb weight – from 1880 to 2100 kg;
  • total weight – up to 2750 kg;
  • wheel track, front axle – 1660 mm;
  • wheel track, rear axle – 1690 mm;
  • recommended fuel is AI-95/Ai-98 gasoline (in the Russian version it is possible to use AI-92);
  • fuel tank capacity – 72 l;
  • The standard tire size for the USA is 235/65R18.

The crossover is equipped with both independent suspensions (McPherson suspension at the front, multi-link at the rear), full disc brakes (with ventilated brake discs on the front axle), an electronic parking brake, and electric power steering.

Engine life Toyota Highlander 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.5

In 2000, during the New York Auto Show, Toyota first demonstrated an all-wheel drive SUV called the Highlander. The first generation of the model was designated XU20; it was not officially supplied to the American market or Russia. The car's popularity grew exponentially. The car appealed to the Western contingent, who prioritized the dimensions of the car, the size of the luggage compartment and the comfort of the interior. In general, the Toyota Highlander positions itself as a car for active recreation, travel and off-road excursions. Due to these qualities, in a relatively short amount of time, the majority of European car owners between the ages of 20 and 30 acquired a Japanese SUV. In Russia, Toyota Highlander began to be delivered to dealerships two years after the presentation of the second generation of the model at the auto show in the American city of Chicago, which took place in 2008.

Domestic car enthusiasts liked the car for its high seating position, all-wheel drive, good equipment, reliability and relatively low maintenance prices. Today, the third generation of the model has been launched. The latest generation Toyota Highlander has been produced and delivered since 2014. The new car received different dimensions, the car gained more mass, and exclusive upholstery materials became available, including Alcantara. The car was also equipped with some advanced technological systems that simplify the process of operating the SUV. Already in the basic configuration there are 8 airbags and a cruise control system. With the technical “stuffing” of the car, everything is more or less clear; the only question that remains open is what is the service life of the Toyota Highlander engine. We will answer the question within the framework of this article.

Toyota Highlander dimensions and weight

The overall dimensions of the car, the chassis, the range of engines and the fuel used - that’s what you definitely need to know.

Dimensions

Toyota's dimensions fully correspond to the category of cars to which it belongs:

  1. Height – 1.7 m;
  2. Width – 1.9 m;
  3. Length – 4.8 m;
  4. Wheelbase – 2.7 m;
  5. Ground clearance – 197 mm.

The front wheel track is 1635 mm, and the rear wheel track is slightly larger - 1650 mm. The Highlander can absolutely boast of the spaciousness of the luggage compartment, because it is about 270 liters. But, this is if you fold the back row of seats. Imagine that the space can be increased to 813 liters, and this is real! All you have to do is fold down all the seats. It would be a sin not to take advantage of this opportunity if the manufacturer has provided such a function.

The weight of the car is impressive. The curb weight is 2.1 tons, and the total weight is 2.7 tons.

Chassis

All Highlander models come with all-wheel drive. But the type of suspension installed on it depends on the specific modification. The front can be independent MacPherson strut or shock absorber strut, and the rear can be coil spring, multi-link independent or independent spring.

Fuel

Despite the impressive dimensions and weight of the Toyota Highlander, the developers worked hard to develop relatively low fuel consumption. The following list shows the fuel consumption values, respectively, city/highway/combined cycle:

  1. 2.7 liter engine – 8/9.9/10.8 per 100 km;
  2. 3.5 liter engine – 12.5/9/10.8 per 100 km.

It is quite difficult to name exactly the appetites of a hybrid installation due to the nuances of interaction between the fuel engine and the electric motor. Judging by reviews from car owners, the hybrid “eats” about 8-9 liters of gasoline.

Engine

Highlander engines fully comply with Euro-5 environmental standards. And now in more detail about each of them. And the first in line is a 2.7 liter petrol power unit.

The in-line engine design is equipped with an injector. It consists of four cylinders and four valves respectively.

Motor characteristics:

  1. Compression ratio - 10:1;
  2. Cylinder diameter – 90 mm;
  3. Piston stroke – 105 mm;
  4. Valve mechanism - VVT-i.

The engine generates a maximum power of 188 horsepower. But these “horses” are available only at 5800 rpm, and such power is not available when driving in urban conditions. But at 4200 rpm the torque reaches 252 N*m. More detailed characteristics can be found in the technical specifications.

The car accelerates to the first hundred in 10.3 seconds. Not a bad indicator, but it lags significantly behind the German manufacturer. The maximum speed that the car can reach is 180 km/h.

And now the second version of the 3.5 liter engine. This power unit is installed on top-end Highlander modifications.

Motor characteristics:

  1. V6;
  2. Four valves and cylinders;
  3. Compression ratio – 10.8:1;
  4. Cylinder diameter – 94 mm;
  5. Piston stroke – 83 mm.

The power plant creates a power of 249 hp, available only at 6200 rpm. Dynamic performance is superior to the previous version of the engine, because the car now accelerates to hundreds in just 8.3 seconds. But, at the same time, the maximum speed remained the same - 180 km/h.

Among the advantages of the Highlander engine mass, I would like to note the simplicity of their design, unpretentious maintenance, good dynamic parameters and traction.

Toyota Highlander engine

Toyota Highlander is presented on the world market with a range of 3.5 l, 2.7 l engines. In addition to them, a number of cars are equipped with a 3.5-liter hybrid system, where the gasoline engine works in tandem with an electric motor.

Early versions of the first generation were equipped with 2.4, 3.0, 3.3-liter gasoline units. But for a number of reasons, the consumer properties of these units no longer corresponded to the declared ones, and the manufacturer had to abandon them, which made it possible to significantly improve the technical characteristics of the Toyota Highlander.

The range of engines of the modern Highlander consists of two types of gasoline units:

  • 7-liter inline 4-cylinder 1AR-FE;
  • 5-liter V-6-cylinder 2GR-FKS.

The hybrid installation is represented by a 3.5-liter V-6 2GR-FXS, paired with an electric motor.

All units of the gasoline line are distinguished by a high degree of reliability, maintainability and unpretentiousness. Motors have long been known among auto mechanics and do not cause difficulties during maintenance and repairs.

The hybrid unit requires more careful handling due to the complexity of the control electronic systems.

How much horsepower does a Toyota Highlander have?

The youngest engine of the car has a displacement of 2672 cm3 and reaches a peak power of 188 horsepower at 5800 rpm.

A more powerful unit under the hood with a volume of 3456 cm3 produces a maximum power of 295 horses at 6600 rpm.

When driving in internal combustion engine mode, the hybrid installation can reach a maximum power of 231 hp. With. at 5800 rpm. On electric power, the unit produces a maximum of 123 kW. The characteristics of the Toyota Highlander in the hybrid version are interesting, but little studied on the vast expanses of Russian roads.

Toyota Highlander 2021 for Russia

How exactly the Russian version of the crossover will differ from the “American” one will become clear later, but there is information that the car will be 16 mm longer than the US model.

You shouldn’t wait for a budget 8-seater cabin yet; the car will arrive in Russia only in a 7-seater version, which will be more comfortable for rear-row passengers.

Most likely, the new Highlander in the Russian Federation will be supplied only with an automatic transmission-8 and a V6 engine, and only with all-wheel drive, although in order to reduce the transport tax, the power of the internal combustion engine will be slightly reduced (to 249 hp).

The 2021 Highlander has already received OTTS approval, but nothing is known for sure about its delivery dates; the car should be expected no earlier than early 2021.

Toyota Highlander engines

The breadth of design thought by Toyota bosses is truly amazing. There is simply no form factor in the world that Japanese designers have not had a hand in creating. In 2000, the new Highlander crossover clocked its first kilometers on the speedometer. It should be noted here that in the Land of the Rising Sun and on the Australian continent the car was sold under a different name - Kluger, due to the fact that the rights to the Highlander trademark there belonged to another Japanese auto giant - Hyundai. Therefore, Highlander, as the name of the modification sounds in translation, was intended for export sale.

Technical specifications of the 2021 Toyota Highlander 4

The new Highlander 2021 has only two trim levels intended for the Russian market. And only one engine is offered – a 3.5-liter 2GR-FKS, the same as the previous generation. Power unit performance – 249 hp. (instead of 295 horsepower for the American and European markets). And the main technical characteristics of the crossover can be called:

  • maximum speed 180 km/h;
  • fuel consumption within 7.6-12.8 liters per 100 km;
  • acceleration to 100 km/h in 8.8 s.

The decrease in productivity for Russian trim levels is due to an increased tax on engines with a power of more than 250 hp. However, even this did not lead to a noticeable decrease in thrust, the reserve of which remains even at high speeds. But the automatic transmission has been updated and is now 8-speed instead of the 6-speed of the previous generation.

The trunk of the new car has increased - but only compared to the Highlander 11. If you compare the compartment with some rivals, you will notice that the volume of 454 liters is one of the smallest. At the same time, with the backrests of the 3rd row folded, the space increases to 1360 liters. If all seats are folded except the front ones, up to 2075 liters.

A good level of equipment in all versions also applies to active and passive safety systems. The model has adaptive cruise control, automatic high and low beam switching, cross-traffic alert and emergency braking. Also worth noting is the emergency braking system, detection of cyclists and pedestrians. According to the results of NHTSA crash tests, the car earned the highest scores. There is no less than 4-5 stars (out of 5) for any indicator.

What affects fuel consumption and how is it calculated?

Fuel consumption is primarily affected by the driving style of the car owner. If the driver likes to start abruptly, drive quickly and at the same time brake just as sharply, for example, in front of a traffic light, then the consumption will be significant. It is possible that under such operating conditions, consumption can reach up to 15 liters per 100 kilometers.

Another factor influencing the increased use of gasoline is operating conditions. For example, when driving on a flat road in the warm season at moderate temperatures, consumption will be minimal. But when you have to constantly get out of deep mud, drive through sand or overcome snow drifts, then you can’t expect low numbers. The car will operate at high speeds, which in itself requires fuel consumption in high doses to maintain power.

For your information! In the winter season or, conversely, in extreme heat, the stove or air conditioner will constantly work in the car. These units will also make themselves felt by increasing the numbers showing the amount of gasoline consumed.

The main factor that affects “appetite” is the serviceability of the car, or rather, the power unit. Consumption also depends on the correct operation of the engine. If there is something wrong with the engine with the piston group, lubrication, fuel supply or electronics, then the car will run poorly and the fuel will most likely run out much faster. In this case, the cause of the malfunction should be immediately determined and eliminated as soon as possible if the machine is used continuously. Otherwise, the situation will only get worse, and repairs will cost a hefty sum if the SUV is even repairable by that point.

The Toyota Highlander SUV is an extremely economical car. And this despite its size and capabilities. With proper operation and constant care, the car will last for many years, and at the same time will allow you to significantly save on fuel compared to its counterparts from a similar class of crossovers. The actual gas mileage of the Toyota Highlader is significantly lower than what car enthusiasts are used to seeing from cars of this size. The performance is more reminiscent of an economy class compact car. The new product from Toyota in the form of the fourth generation Highlander promises the most economical fuel consumption among all models of this type.

Toyota Highlander 4 2021 Competitors

The list of car competitors includes such models as Kia Sorrento and Hyundai Grand Santa Fe. Moreover, the price of each rival with similar characteristics is lower, and the handling and dynamics are slightly better. Although the Kia model has noticeably fewer options. And the Grand Santa Fe has not been updated since 2021 and is less common for sale. And, if the factor of price and dynamics is not decisive, it is better to choose a Highlander instead of Korean crossovers.

Another car similar in a number of parameters and price is the Ford Explorer. For the price it turned out to be a little more profitable. And the characteristics of the motor are almost the same. However, Toyota's engine is more reliable, and the 8-speed automatic transmission is more convenient than Ford's 6-speed. And even in the base model it has heated front seats, a high-quality multimedia complex and 3-zone climate control.

All news about Toyota Highlander

History of creation and production

For the first time outside Japan, car enthusiasts were able to enjoy the beauty of the Highlander's lines in the cradle of the world automobile industry, Detroit, in 2001. The car with a frame body, designed on the Toyota K platform, has three generations and several restylings.

Depending on the set of functions, it is available with five or seven doors.

Since 2008, the car platform has been as close as possible to another famous model - Camry. And a couple of years later, Highlender was officially sold in the Russian Federation for the first time.

  • 1st generation (2000-2008).

It should be noted right away: despite the body design, the new car could not be called an SUV. Its main features:

  • frame body;
  • independent rear suspension.
  • 4-speed automatic transmission;
  • front or all wheel drive.

Power plants consistently increased displacement and power - first 2.4 liters, then 3 and 3.5. The automatic transmission finally became five-speed.

  • 2nd generation (2008-2013).

A year before the start of production, modifications of the next generation Highlander were no longer sold in Japanese car dealerships. The main markets for it remained the USA, Canada, China, Mexico, Australia (the same Kluger) and New Zealand. The powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine is complemented by a newly designed hybrid engine with the same displacement. As an experiment, a front-wheel drive version of the car was produced with a four-cylinder 2.7-liter 1AR-FE engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Highlander 2nd generation in Moscow, against the backdrop of the Otkritie Arena stadium

Since 2010, in a new design look, Highlander began to rapidly conquer the market of Russia and Ukraine in the basic configuration at a price of 1.6 million rubles:

  • salon for seven seats;
  • gearbox - five-speed automatic;
  • engine – 2GR-FE (power 270 hp, volume 3.5 liters).

Two years later, the price was reduced by 200 thousand rubles. The new cars did not have a third row of seats and a three-zone climate control system. The roof rail for installing an additional luggage rack has disappeared. The seat trim material has also been simplified.

  • 3rd generation (since 2013).

The sound of the new car has become significantly quieter, thanks to a 30% increase in the sound insulation area of the interior floor. The set of configurations includes only two modern 3.5-liter gasoline engines of different power. The less “strained” 2GR-FXS was installed so that buyers were able to pay less tax. The basic dimensions of the model have changed in comparison with the 2nd generation analogue:

  • height – 1730 mm. (instead of 1760);
  • length – 4865 mm. (instead of 4785).

It is very difficult to obtain such a security certificate

It is noteworthy that it is impossible to officially test the Highlander for emissions: there are no retail chains selling the crossover in Europe. Therefore, Gorets cannot boast of EuroNCAP examination data. But with the level of operational safety in the car, everything is in perfect order. This is confirmed by a certificate issued by the American Institute for Highway Safety IIHS based on the results of comprehensive crash tests.

General technical specifications

The fourth generation is based on the TNGA-K platform. After the successful creation of the Highlander, several more models of other cars were released on its basis.

The manufacturer assures that thanks to this platform, the car has become even more comfortable, safer and more reliable. The car has become even larger, but we'll talk about that later.

The body of the new Highlander is very different compared to its predecessors of 2014, 2015 and even 2021. The designers used many interesting solutions.

The front of the car, as befits its class, looks massive and brutal

The first thing you will notice is the bulky bumper with an interesting design. The creators added stylish openings for fog lights on the sides of the bumper, and a wide air intake was located below

Externally, the Highlander resembles a real predator, thanks to another interesting idea - the installation of LED optics.

The overall radiator grille also fits harmoniously into the overall exterior. There is a chrome-plated company logo on it. The edging around the entire perimeter of the grille looks good.

The side appearance has also undergone many changes. The changed shape of the rear windows immediately catches your eye. And on the side parts there are now original stampings.

The side mirrors have also changed their location. Now they are installed on the body surface of the front doors.

And the coolest addition to this picture can be considered alloy wheels. Their size reaches 20 inches.

The rear of the fourth modification of the Highlander is distinguished by modern LED optics. One part of it is installed on the roof of the trunk, and the second on the sides.

The tailgate has changed in appearance, the slope of its glass has increased, so the rear of the car began to look more compact.

Updates everywhere, everywhere. But, only the bumper remained virtually unchanged. If you look closely, you can only notice a slight increase in size and protective gray plastic on the bottom.

Take your time, don’t think that the changes are over. What about the spoiler? It has also been transformed and is now a stylish continuation of the roof.

The transformation also affected the Highlander’s inner world. The designers completely revised the interior architecture. The front panel has changed.

An LCD display with a good size of 12.3 inches was installed on the center console.

On the instrument panel, in addition to the tachometer and speedometer, a multifunctional on-board computer screen appeared. On different modifications, its dimensions vary from 4.2 to 7 inches.

Consumer characteristics have been taken into account and improved. For example, the quality of the material for upholstery and interior trim has noticeably improved. I can't help but appreciate the improved sound insulation. The arsenal of available equipment has become much wider.

Manufacturers have worked on the interior configuration, so several ways to transform it are now available.

What engines are equipped with Toyota Highlander?

The first in the list of available power units is a 2.4-liter power unit labeled 2AZ-FE. This motor is one of the most reliable Japanese motors. Cars such as the Toyota Alphard and Toyota Blade were also equipped with a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE. The rated power of the engine is 145-170 horsepower, depending on the boost level. The only drawback of such an engine is the lack of traction for an SUV weighing almost 2 tons (in running order, the Toyota Highlander weighs 1880 kg). Partly for this reason, subsequent generations of the model were not equipped with the smallest engine in the line of available units. This engine subsequently successfully replaced the 2.7-liter engine with the factory marking AR-FE, which was first tested with the release of the second generation Highlander.

The full list of engines available for the SUV is as follows:

After the appearance of the second generation XU40, the 3MZ-FE 3.3-liter engine began to be considered the base one, and a 2.7 engine was offered as an alternative. The restyling carried out in 2010 gave car enthusiasts another 2GR-FKS 3.5 unit. This engine provides the necessary level of low-end traction and gives the car excellent dynamics, which makes it possible to operate the Toyota Highlander not only in the city, but also off-road. At 6200 rpm, the torque is 337 Nm, which, of course, cannot fail to attract the attention of lovers of country outings. Fans of fast driving will appreciate the ability to accelerate the car from the start: the Toyota Highlander 3.5 accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds.

Engine life 2AZ-FE 2.4

The 2AZ-FE engine appeared in the early 2000s and became one of the representatives of the AZ family of power units. The cylinder block is made of aluminum alloy; a cylinder head with two camshafts is installed on top. A phase regulator is installed on the intake camshaft. The timing system is driven by a fairly reliable chain, which, as a rule, serves throughout the entire declared service life of the engine. The 2AZ-FE motor is incredibly popular, especially in the secondary market. They equipped the installation not only with the legendary Toyota Camry 40, but also with many front-wheel drive cars of the concern. You can also find a hybrid engine modification, designated 2AZ-FXE. This engine has a slightly different piston group, improved camshafts and different firmware of the electronic control unit.

The main design feature is that the sleeves are fused into the block material; their outer side has special irregularities that contribute to the strongest possible connection of structural parts and effective heat removal. The design of the 2AZ-FE has much in common with the 1AZ, therefore, when considering the main disadvantages of the installation, one can take into account all the weaknesses of its predecessor. Car owners note the engine’s tendency to overheat and vibration.

As for breakdowns, most often the threads in the block are broken; if low-quality motor oil is used, scuffs form on the surface of the cylinders. Are there any serious disadvantages to the 2AZ-FE? Surely many car enthusiasts will not like the unrepairable cylinder block, which does not allow for major engine repairs. However, the manufacturer has built serious potential into the unit, which has at least 350,000 kilometers.

Maximum resource 1AR-FE 2.7

The engine with a cylinder block capacity of 2.7 liters is one of the largest units in the AR series. By its design, the 1AR-FE is an in-line aluminum “four” with two camshafts and a dual VVT-i variable valve timing system. The date of birth of the engine is considered to be 2008, it was then that Toyota engineers decided to create a fundamentally new unit capable of meeting the needs of a wide range of modern car enthusiasts. The new engine was based on the filling of the 2.5-liter 2AR-FE. A completely different enlarged crankshaft with a piston stroke of 105 mm was placed in the cylinder block. In terms of dimensions, the engine is larger than its predecessor, the compression ratio is 10 - this is the only thing that distinguishes the 1AR-FE from the 2AR-FE. The 1AR-FE has two camshafts and a 16-valve cylinder head. The timing system shafts are driven by a single-row resource-intensive chain.

As in the case of the 2AZ-FE engine, which collected all the weaknesses and shortcomings of the 1AZ-FE, the 1AR-FE engine also adopted all the “chronic” diseases of the 2AR-FE. The first element that fails during vehicle operation is often the VVT-i coupling (the problem is solved by replacing the mechanism). Another detail that most often causes discomfort to the owner is the pump. If leaks occur, the faulty device should be replaced. As time has shown, the 1AR-FE engine is reliable, proven, without design flaws. But the engine became a victim of the principles of modern automotive engineering. Its “disposability” is perhaps its only drawback. On the other hand, the built-in potential of 400,000 kilometers will actually ensure quiet operation of the SUV without serious breakdowns for twenty years.

How long does 1MZ-FE 3.0 run?

In 1996, the three-liter 1MZ-FE was among the TOP 10 best engines of our time. Almost immediately after its appearance, the installation was able to prove itself from the best side and tightly occupy the highest positions in various ratings. By origin, the 1MZ-FE can be classified as an improved unit of the VZ family. The cylinder block is made of aluminum with liners pressed under the pistons, which makes it difficult to carry out major repairs, since it is impossible to bore to repair dimensions. The aluminum structure is afraid of constant critical increases in operating temperature, which has a particularly detrimental effect on the service life of 1MZ-FE. Another typical nuisance is coking of the rings and valve stem seals, which is caused by the not-so-successful and well-thought-out design of the cooling system. The engine differs from the two previous engines considered in its layout - it is a V-shaped unit with two camshafts and a camber angle of 60 degrees. Initially, the engine received a standard gas distribution system, but soon after the modernization of the Toyota Highlander line of units, the engine appeared in a new guise with the introduced VVT-i system.

Instead of a timing belt, it has a chain with a service life of 120-140 thousand kilometers. The engine is equipped with an EGR exhaust gas recirculation system, so it is demanding on the quality of engine oil and fuel. Using low-quality gasoline often leads to problems with the EGR valve. The latest versions of the 1MZ-FE feature an electronic throttle body and an ACIS variable geometry intake manifold. It should be borne in mind that this engine does not have hydraulic compensators, so you will need to independently adjust the thermal clearances approximately every 100,000 kilometers. Now let's move on to the main disadvantages of 1MZ-FE. First of all, it should be noted that the engine tends to be oily. However, on the secondary market, most cars with this power unit have covered several hundred thousand kilometers, so the fact of increased oil consumption should not be surprising. There is only one way out - replacing the rings and caps. Capricious EGR and VVT-i valves are another headache for the car owner.

It is precisely because of a faulty USR valve and timing system that engine vibrations occur, idle speed fluctuates, dynamics decrease and fuel consumption increases by an order of magnitude. Like many other Toyota Highlander 1MZ-FE engines, it cannot be overhauled. In the event of a serious breakdown, you will have to purchase a contract engine or look for craftsmen who don’t mind tinkering with the aluminum V-shaped “six”. This is not the most successful and resource-intensive engine in the range of available engines for an SUV. Its operation is justified only if optimal operating conditions are provided - high-quality high-octane gasoline and original motor oil. Often the 1MZ-FE fails ahead of schedule if maintenance regulations are not followed. However, if you want to buy an SUV with this particular engine, you don’t need to be afraid of it. It is possible to develop a resource of 320 thousand kilometers, which is not so little.

Engine life 3MZ-FE 3.3

Another V-shaped engine belonging to the large family of MZ engines. The 3.3-liter 3MZ-FE appeared back in the 90s of the last century. However, its design is still considered perfect and in demand. The cylinder block is made of light aluminum alloy, which reduced the cost of production of the unit and had a positive effect on its weight (and the overall weight of the car). But the camshafts are cast from steel - a step towards increasing the service life of the mechanism. The intake manifold and almost all attachments are made of aluminum. The engine does not like high operating temperatures. An aluminum 16-valve cylinder head is also installed on top of the block.

The fuel supply system is multi-point electronic injection. What distinguishes the 3MZ-FE from all previously reviewed Toyota Highlander engines is the presence of cast iron liners, which are perfectly amenable to various influences. Major repairs on this engine are easier to carry out than on many Toyota engines. The gas distribution mechanism is driven by a timing belt with a service life of 90-120 thousand kilometers. There are known cases of belt breakage during vehicle operation in difficult conditions. It is important to monitor the condition of this mechanism and take all necessary actions in time to prevent its failure. Overall, this is a resource-intensive engine that can travel up to 350,000 kilometers before the first major overhaul.

Engine life 2GR-FKS 3.5

The unit with a working volume of 3.5 liters under the factory marking 2GR-FKS was born in 2015. Today, many American and Japanese-made cars are actively equipped with this engine. The engine is interesting for its non-standard design: the operating principle of the 2GR-FKS is based on the Atkinson cycle, instead of multipoint and direct injection there is a combined injection D-4S. Another interesting decision by Toyota designers is the presence of a proprietary variable valve timing system VVT-iW. The design of the 2GR-FKS is unlikely to surprise the average car enthusiast: a V-shaped “six” with two camshafts in the DOHC cylinder head. The basis of the engine is a lightweight cylinder block made of aluminum alloy. The 2GR-FKS's elasticity is enhanced by an intake manifold with modified ACIS geometry.

Since this is a relatively new invention, the engine received the unloved EGR valve by many car owners. The driver’s task is to refuel with high-quality fuel and use exclusively engine oil recommended by the manufacturer. The operating efficiency of this engine is difficult to dispute, but at the same time, the 2GR-FKS cannot boast of an extremely long service life.

The designers of the Toyota concern managed to assemble a fairly high-quality engine with good performance characteristics. Among the main advantages of the 2GR-FKS it is worth noting the high level of power, reliability of the design and endurance of the power unit. The engine is equipped with a timing chain, which does not cause unnecessary trouble throughout the entire operating period of the vehicle. The average engine service life is 320,000 kilometers, which can be considered a worthy indicator at the present time, when few automobile manufacturers prioritize the production of reliable and resource-intensive products.

Engine life 2GR-FE 3.5

When purchasing an SUV for several million rubles, it will not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the service life of the Toyota Highlander 3.5 engine. Production of the 2GR-FE V-shaped six-cylinder engine began in 2005. The engine was first installed on the second generation Toyota Highlander. Structurally, the unit consists of 70% aluminum, the cylinder head is 24-valve. The gas distribution system is made according to the DOHC scheme with two camshafts. Also on the 2GR-FE, the Japanese innovative VVT-i technology was tested, represented by the actuator of the phase shift system in the camshaft pulley. The shafts are driven by a single-row roller chain. The main disadvantages of the engine include the weak and sensitive VVT-i lubrication system, the elements of which often fail after 2 years of active use of the SUV.

Car owners note the fact that the electronic throttle valve becomes quickly clogged, which causes unstable idling and increased fuel consumption. The fifth cylinder is prone to scuffing due to an ineffective heat removal system, which results in a several-fold increase in the amount of engine oil consumed per thousand kilometers and serious damage to the cylinder head head mechanisms. Overall, a reliable and stable unit, which became the basis for the development of many modified engines - FKS, FXS, FZE, FSE. The engine life is at least 350,000 kilometers. In order for the installation to reach its full potential, it is necessary to regularly check the cooling system for correct functioning, clean the throttle valve every 50,000 kilometers, change the timing chain every 150,000 kilometers, even if the timing drive does not show obvious signs of malfunction.

Engines and gearbox

New Highlander models are equipped with 2 types of engines. When manufacturing power units, engineers took into account Euro-5 environmental standards.

Engine characteristics:

Engine (volume, l)Maximum power, l. With. DesignCompression ratioCylinder diameter, mmPiston stroke, mmValve mechanism
2,71884 cylinders 4 valves10,0:190105VVT-i
3,52496 cylinders 4 valves10,8:19483Dual VVT-i
3.5 (fourth generation)2956 cylinders 4 valves11,89483VVT-iE

For a car with a 2.7-liter engine, maximum power is achieved at 5800 rpm. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds. Maximum speed – 180 km/h.

The transmission for all generations is automatic transmission, that is, an automatic transmission. The number of steps depends on the year of manufacture.

GenerationYears of manufactureNumber of gears
First2000-20074
Second2007-20125
Third2012-20166
2016-20188
Fourth20198

The advantages of engines include unpretentiousness, simple design, good dynamics, and traction. Among the disadvantages are high fuel consumption and a small trunk.

Fuel consumption depends on the driver's driving style and driving cycle. Basically, the performance of the 2.7-liter engine reaches the following marks per 100 km:

  • during a country walk - 7.9 l;
  • with mixed driving - 9.9 l;
  • during city travel – 13.3 liters.

The consumption of a V6 engine does not significantly change the performance per 100 km of road:

  • on a country road - 8.4 l;
  • with mixed driving – 10.6 l;
  • in city mode - 14.4 liters.

In traffic jams and heavy traffic, consumption increases sharply to 20 liters. The gas tank capacity is 72 liters, so refueling is required on average once every 3 days.

The most popular engine for Highlander cars

The most commonly used engine in the Highlander model is the 3MZ-FE. Even despite the fact that in other Toyota models it “lit up” only 6 times. This is a solid Japanese “middle peasant”, not distinguished by its leadership among other engines in this line, both in terms of displacement and power. However, its use was not limited to the 1st generation of Highlander cars. The motor was installed in various configurations of the next series. It is noteworthy that it was modified several times for different power indicators:

Technological features of the MZ series are an injector, a forged crankshaft made of steel, a cast cylinder block and head made of lightweight and durable aluminum instead of cast iron, molybdenum coating of the pistons to create an anti-friction effect. A proprietary VVTi valve timing control was installed on the intake shaft. If necessary, it was possible to change the length of the collector.

An interesting solution was the installation of the ETCS-i throttle valve opening control system. The main task is to reduce fuel consumption and optimize the process of driving a car due to the correct choice of injection timing. The damper is controlled by an electric motor. Sensors note two indicators:

The electrical circuit of the damper operation provides for minimal kinetic connection with the accelerator pedal.

It is with this know-how that the developers from Toyota have not very good memories. The system turned out to be quite capricious in operation. In a nutshell, what very often happened to cars was called “unintended acceleration.” In the mid-2000s, high-profile hearings of a commission created as a result of incidents related to the operation of the ETCS-i system took place in the United States. Their result was published in a 321-page communiqué. To ensure traffic safety, engineers subsequently refused to place the sensor on the gas pedal.

Advantages of a car

The 2003 Toyota Highlander has a number of advantages:

High reliability of the car, which is associated with the famous name of the Japanese manufacturer. Toyota's many years of experience gives us confidence that all components and parts are manufactured with a high margin of safety and require repair and replacement in extreme cases, most often due to improper operation or untimely replacement of consumables. Spaciousness of the interior and trunk: the interior space of the car is worked out to the smallest detail, there are many compartments for storing useful little things, and a convenient table. The luggage compartment allows you to easily transport large cargo and is equipped with shelves that help you use the available space wisely. Power, reliability of the power plant. The 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine has excellent power performance and accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. Good build quality and functioning of the automatic gearbox. Constantly engaged all-wheel drive, heavy loads, do not affect the transmission’s performance of its duties

The main thing is to carry out its maintenance properly and regularly. Excellent appearance: menacing optics, a large hood, sweeping body lines, a massive bumper, all this creates an impressive image. Sufficient ground clearance, which is very important for driving on poor road surfaces. It is this factor that makes an SUV a true SUV. Versatility, allowing you to use the car both as a comfortable family car and as a best friend and assistant when traveling outdoors with a group of hunters. High level of controllability: well-thought-out design aspects, the use of the most modern developments, well-performed calculations, all this helps in simple and confident “steering” at any speed, in any conditions. High level of sales even on the secondary market: the car loses value after the initial purchase at a car dealership, not as rapidly as some of its competitors.

Troubles during operation of Toyota Highlander 2013

It is useful for owners or potential buyers to know the most common breakdowns that accompany the operation of the Toyota Highlander 2013. From time to time, the trip is also marred by signs of design flaws:

  • Knocks in the front suspension on rough roads and in severe frost.
  • Creaks in the rear suspension when pitching.
  • Extraneous sounds, whistles from the top edge of the door, directly above the driver's head. May appear when driving at a speed of 120-140 km per hour.
  • Rattling of the plastic casing near the subwoofer, as well as creaking of the casing under the power window control panel.
  • The navigator does not see traffic jams and shows the wrong time zone.
  • Condensation on the inner wall of the taillight. Often leads to detachment of the reflective layer. It is observed only in drivers who park their car in a warm garage.
  • False activation of front parking sensors in cold weather or after washing.
  • False activation of the light sensor.
  • Front brake discs wobble during hard braking.
  • Freezing of washer fluid in the windshield nozzle at temperatures below -10 ºC.

Frequent breakdowns and weak points of the machine:

  • Cracks appear on the top rails. This happens due to repeated sharp temperature changes.
  • The rear servo drive near the trunk door breaks.
  • Weak battery.

Minor design factory miscalculations do not affect the speed and comfort of movement. Maybe a little annoying.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the car play an important role when choosing. The larger the car, the more difficult it is to drive - many who know what we are talking about will agree with this statement.

Three quantities determine the dimensions of a car: length, height and width. How are they measured? Yes, very easy. Length refers to the distance from the most protruding point of the front bumper to the farthest section of the rear bumper.

Width is measured at the widest point - usually the wheel arches. But sometimes the central body pillars can serve as such a place.

But with the third value it is already more difficult. Height is usually measured from the ground surface to the roof. Moreover, the height of the roof rails is not taken into account when measuring.

Dimensions of Toyota Highlander:

  1. Length – 4.9 m;
  2. Width – 1.9 m;
  3. Height – 1.7 m;
  4. Ground clearance – 2790 mm.

Salon

The interior of the Highlander has become more luxurious due to the use of premium materials - high-quality leather, plastic and metal. And, although the interior still looks conservative, inside the car you can notice many modern and useful options:

  • a multimedia system with an 8-inch touch screen for mid-range trim levels, 6.1-inch for the LE version and 12.3-inch for the top-end car;
  • navigation system with Russian-language interface;
  • screens for second-row passengers and a 12-speaker audio system (top trims only);
  • analog display for displaying readings of main instruments and outputting data on the amount of torque;
  • leather-trimmed and larger steering wheel with heated function;
  • 12 cup holders scattered throughout the cabin;
  • many compartments and compartments to accommodate various small items.

The front seats of the updated Highlander are distinguished by the maximum level of comfort, including ventilation and heating, although they do not have lateral support. The middle row received climate control controls and heating. The three-seat rear sofa is divided in a ratio of 60 to 40 and can comfortably accommodate three adult passengers. There is more legroom thanks to the extra 6 centimeters in length - although a significant part was in the luggage compartment.

Interior

Inside, the materials are traditionally simple and well-built. The car is still not cheap, so even from its appearance it is clear that it has a good level of equipment. Top trim levels received leather upholstery and wooden inserts, which completely changed the impression.

The skin is weak, after a few years creases appear on the driver's seat. The Toyota Highlander XU40 seats themselves are comfortable, with 8-way electrical adjustment. The rear sofa is adjustable longitudinally, it’s perfect for two people to sit there, but it’s very uncomfortable for the central passenger. The third row of seats is a little small, it is better to transport children there. In good trim levels, your own climate control appears at the rear.

The 4-spoke multi-steering wheel is comfortable, but the dashboard is more attractive. Technically, these are just 4 analog sensors, but their design and placement in different wells looks beautiful, look at the photo.

At first glance, the center console seems overloaded, although this impression is created by the many climate control buttons, which you quickly figure out. The upper 7-inch navigation and multimedia display is controlled by buttons and two huge pucks. At the bottom there are seat heating adjustment consoles, a 12-volt power outlet and music ports. The stove stops working after a few years due to the wiring - you need to disassemble and resolder the contacts.

The tunnel looks stylish, again due to the wooden insert. There are cup holders, another socket and niches for small items.

The electric trunk lid provides access to 292 liters of space (if all 7 seats are used), and by folding the two rear rows you can transfer large cargo to 2282 liters. In normal condition with 5 seats, the trunk volume is 1200 liters.

Reviews from car owners

Toyota Highlander cars produced before 2010 with a 2GR engine are characterized by serious problems with the VVT-i lubrication system, namely, some pipes had rubber inserts, which often caused leaks. The company officially confirmed the problem and recalled all cars. After 2010, the problem was solved, therefore, in an old-style car, it is advisable to immediately replace the oil line with an all-metal one. Another characteristic feature of 2GR engines during operation is crackling and increased noise of the engine during startup, which is explained by the operation of the clutches of the aforementioned VVT-i system.

There is only one way out - replacing the coupling itself. A rough idle can be corrected by cleaning the electronic throttle body. Replacing the pump is every 70 thousand km, replacing the belt after 90-110 thousand km, and it is best to replace the chain with a new one every 120-150 thousand kilometers. These are key features of car maintenance, the observance of which will lead to the creation of the best operating conditions for the engine. So, what the service life of a Toyota Highlander engine is in practice will be covered in detail by real reviews from car owners.

Engine 2.4

The disadvantages of this engine include insufficient power for a two-ton SUV. Constant work at the limit negatively affects the maximum resource. But with a competent approach to maintenance, the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE will last at least 350,000 kilometers.

Power unit 2.7

The “disposability” of the 1AR-FE engine is the only drawback. But this unpleasant feature for many domestic car enthusiasts is more than offset by the advantages of the engine - power, traction, low fuel consumption, resource intensity. The Toyota Highlander 2.7 engine resource is at least 400,000 kilometers. One of the most reliable power units of the entire variety provided.

Engine 3.0

Another good option to purchase is an SUV with a 3.0-liter engine labeled 1MZ-FE. A successful engine design is the key to its long service life, which does not bring unnecessary trouble to the car owner. The 1MZ-FE engine is still one of the old guard of Japanese power units, so there is no doubt about its quality and resource intensity. Owners note that early copies of the Toyota Highlander last 15-20 years and during this time cover 350-400 thousand kilometers.

Motor 3.3

The 3MZ-FE power unit rightly belongs to the group of the most reliable Japanese engines. Car owners note the excellent dynamic performance of the engine and its endurance. Speaking about the resource of 3MZ-FE, it is worth focusing on 350-400 thousand kilometers, but it is possible that with high-quality maintenance, a car with this power unit will cover even more.

Engine 3.5

2GR engines are now installed in many Japanese cars, including Toyota and Lexus. The latest modifications have virtually no flaws, but the earliest assemblies are not without serious miscalculations. The first is the presence of rubber tubes, which can burst at any moment; in this case, the oil flows either onto the caliper or directly onto the road. The second case is especially dangerous, because the driver may not notice how the engine began to starve of oil, which in especially severe cases leads to jamming. The second is the couplings of the VVT-i system, which fail relatively quickly. Compared to old engines, modern 2GRs have lost somewhat in terms of service life, but Japanese quality, as before, remains Japanese. The service life of 2GR-FE and all modifications is on average 320-350 thousand kilometers.
