New Toyota Tundra / Toyota Tundra 2021: technical specifications, interior and exterior, sales start date and estimated prices

In the spring of 2021, the largest Japanese automaker Toyota pleased fans of the brand with the presentation of the updated Toyota Tundra pickup truck (photo below) - no less reliable than the previous models in the line, but at the same time faster and more maneuverable. The appearance of the car has also changed: without losing its restraint, the new premium pickup truck has acquired an assertive and slightly daring image. Thus, the new Toyota Tundra should attract the attention of both the manufacturer’s regular customers and young drivers who have not yet clearly defined their preferences.

The 2021 Toyota Tundra (photo below) belongs to the third generation of pickup trucks of the same name. The first generation, produced from 1999 to 2006, was a replacement for the earlier version of the Japanese T100 brand pickup truck. The need for replacement was caused solely by the manufacturer’s desire to update the range: the old T100 had practically no shortcomings in the field of driving performance, safety or internal electrical circuit. The inescapable desire of the Japanese to improve products had an effect; in addition, it was at that time that Toyota began to seriously expand its sales market, taking root in America, Europe and Russia, and a little later in Australia.

It was the latter factor that influenced the designers’ decision to give the new car more European features that could attract North American and European buyers. Another difference between the new Toyota Tundra of the 2000 model is the new generation eight-cylinder 32-valve V-twin engine with a volume of 4.7 liters, which was initially installed as an option, and over time completely replaced the 3.4-liter six-cylinder unit used in the T100.

The new pickup immediately appealed to not only ordinary buyers, but also experts. Twice, in 2000 (first generation) and 2008 (second generation), it became “truck of the year” according to the most authoritative North American magazine Motor Trend. It was the widespread recognition of the Toyota Tundra around the world that influenced the manufacturer’s decision to launch production of the equally popular Sequoia SUV on the Tundra platform. Toyota has endowed the new model with almost all the features of a pickup truck, including the same eight-cylinder engine, transmission, internal wiring layout and security system.

The history of choosing the name of the new pickup truck deserves special mention. Oddly enough, the choice of a successful original name was influenced by a lawsuit against Toyota from the North American giant Ford, whose marketers, not without reason, believed that the serial designation T150s initially chosen by Toyota was too similar to that used by Ford for its products - F150. The Japanese chose to refrain from lengthy legal proceedings and renamed the new pickup truck - as it turned out, to their greater benefit.

After the modernization carried out in early 2005, the Toyota Tundra, while completely maintaining its appearance, received new components:

  • six-cylinder engine with a volume of 4 liters and a power of 236 horsepower (361 Nm);
  • an updated 4.7-liter eight-cylinder engine, which, due to the introduction of VVTi technology, developed a power of 271 horsepower (424 Nm);
  • instead of a five-speed manual or automatic transmission - a six-speed manual or automatic, respectively.

The second generation Toyota Tundra, produced from 2006 to 2013, adopted some appearance elements from the more modern Tacoma models and the FTX concept.

At the first stage of production (2007–2009), the buyer could choose between three types of engines:

  • six-cylinder volume of 4 liters and a power of 236 horsepower (361 Nm);
  • eight-cylinder, 4.7 liters/271 horsepower (424 Nm);
  • eight-cylinder, 5.7 liters/381 horsepower (544 Nm).

Subsequently (2010–2013), Toyota expanded its range, which from now on included four types of engines:

  • 4-liter six-cylinder with 236 horsepower (361 Nm);
  • 4.6-liter eight-cylinder with 310 horsepower (424 Nm);
  • 5.7-liter eight-cylinder with 381 horsepower (544 Nm) (3UR-FE/3UR-FBE).

The new 2007 Toyota Tundra was available in a total of 31 trim levels, including five body styles:

  • single-row two-door - Regular;
  • the same option with an extended platform - Regular Long;
  • two-row four-door for 6 people - Double;
  • the same option with an extended platform - Double Long;
  • the same option with a more spacious cabin and a short platform - Crew Max.

The second-generation Toyota Tundra has become, according to the IIHS, one of the safest cars in the world, scoring the highest possible scores in side and rear impact tests, as well as showing excellent results in frontal crashes. A significant advantage was the presence of an advanced stabilization system even in the basic configuration of the car.

The disadvantage of the Toyota Tundra, according to some car enthusiasts, is the complete absence of diesel units in the engine line. Despite the manufacturer's promises back in 2008, the Tundra pickup and Sequoia SUV are still equipped exclusively with gasoline engines, and the new 2021 Toyota Tundra (photo below) is likely to be no exception.

It is possible that “diesel” modifications of the pickup truck will appear in the future, but the manufacturer does not give exact dates, which is quite strange, considering the presence of the original Toyota development - a 4.6-liter diesel engine installed on the Land Cruiser model. There is no talk yet about hybrid modifications of the Tundra.

The third generation of the Toyota Tundra pickup truck has been produced since 2013 to this day with the same four types of gasoline engines. The new version of the 2021 Toyota Tundra (photo below) will be available with only three of them: the 4-liter unit will still be a thing of the past.

The changes will affect the appearance of the car, as well as the color scheme and interior design. Depending on the configuration of the pickup truck, the client will have access to from 3 to 11 body shades listed below:

  • snow-white (Super White);
  • silver (Silver Sky Metallic);
  • gray (Cement);
  • dark silver (Magnetic Gray Metallic);
  • black (Midnight Black Metallic);
  • sandy (Quicksand);
  • brown (Smoked Mesquite);
  • smoky blue (Cavalry Blue);
  • blue (Blazing Blue Pearl);
  • fiery red (Inferno);
  • red (Barcelona Red Metallic).

The number of interior finishing options is not yet known. With a high probability, Toyota will provide at least three options: from predominantly dark tones to beige.

The appearance of the new 2021 Toyota Tundra (photo below) has become even more solid after the restyling. Thanks to a slight facelift, the truck now looks a little more aggressive than before. The body of the Toyota Tundra is traditionally lean, raised above the ground, which ensures the most comfortable and safe ride even in off-road conditions.

The manufacturer has provided 5 main car configurations with slightly different appearances:

  • S.R. Basic option. A minimum of chrome parts: even the radiator grille and door handles were left without chrome.
  • SR5. The outer contour of the grille and the locations of the fog lights are covered with chrome.
  • Limited. In addition to the largest number of available car shades, this modification received a fully chrome-plated radiator grille, areas for foglights, door handles, side mirror backs, as well as decorative inscriptions on the doors.
  • Platinum. The black chrome plating on the grille and bumper blends seamlessly with the usual on the handles and side mirrors.
  • 1794 Edition. As in the previous version, chrome is applied to the radiator grille, bumper, handles and mirrors, but everywhere it is in the usual light shade.

Otherwise, the appearance of the versions of the new pickup truck is identical:

  • The front of the pickup truck is decorated with a wide trapezoidal radiator grille, through which three horizontal double lines pass. In the center, as usual, is the Toyota logo. The manufacturer did not experiment with the shape of the grille and headlights, combining them into a continuous line: the almost rectangular headlights neatly adjoin the grille without becoming its continuation. The car's bumper is massive, but practically does not protrude forward. The fog lights are small, perfectly round, recessed into the bumper. To ensure air access to the engine, the hood cover has a slot at the front covered with a grille that runs almost its entire length.
  • The side view of the new 2021 Toyota Tundra demonstrates the power and comfort of the car: huge wheel arches suitable for rims with a radius of 18 to 20 inches, wide convenient side doors with the inscription “Tundra” and protruding horizontal handles and grooved side sills - all in the best Toyota traditions.
  • The rear view of the pickup truck, like almost all of the manufacturer’s models, is quite modest. Vertical red and white headlights, extending slightly onto the sides of the body, are in harmony with the convenient platform door, which, if necessary, becomes a continuation of the supporting structure. Access to the platform and, accordingly, loading and unloading operations is greatly facilitated by a two-stage threshold with an anti-slip coating, the lower stage of which is located in the center, under the car number, and the upper two are located on the sides of the Toyota Tundra. Under the threshold there is a reinforced trailer mount. The exhaust pipe is directed not to the rear, but to the right. The cabin of the new pickup truck is decorated with a bright spoiler.

All lighting equipment of the 2021 Toyota Tundra (photo below) is exclusively LED, regardless of the configuration chosen by the buyer. Improved versions of the pickup truck are equipped with removable roof rails for 4 fastenings, allowing you to transport luggage that does not fit on the platform directly on the roof of the car.

Appearance

Overall dimensions of Toyota Tundra. The body size of the Japanese “truck” is certainly impressive. The length and width of the pickup truck are perfect both for placing large cargo in the trunk and for comfortably carrying passengers inside the car. The height of the SUV meets all standards for a comfortable driving experience, as well as an excellent seating position with good visibility.

Toyota Tundra - appearance

Unlike its predecessors, Toyota GEN3 (third generation) has acquired a more aggressive appearance of the front end. The large chrome radiator grille added a touch of “brutality” to the car. New stylish headlights with LED lamps and fog optics gave the SUV maximum “volume” of road illumination. There's nothing to say about the excellent combination of modern styling while respecting the design of older Tundra models. It’s not for nothing that this pickup truck received the “Truck of the Year” award in 2000 and 2008 from Motor Trend magazine as the most “designer SUV-truck.”

Of course, when you see such an SUV, the question always arises: “How much does the Toyota Tundra weigh?” The full-size pickup weighs more than four and a half tons. The weight of the Toyota Tundra allows you to easily transport large and heavy loads. In addition to the fact that you can take up the “luggage compartment”, it is possible to take a “mobile home” with you. Our SUV will be able to do all this, because it is equipped with a strong engine.

Around and below the display there are additional buttons and washers for fine-tuning climate control and multimedia, and on the sides there are two round deflectors for the ventilation system (two more are located at the edges of the panel).

The central tunnel of the new Toyota Tundra (photo below) reaches the line of the front seats; This allows, in conditions of limited space in the pickup cabin, to provide rear passengers with maximum free space. On the driver's side of the tunnel there is a gear shift lever; on the passenger side there are two cup holders running one after the other and (in front) a niche for small items. Between the front row seats there is a common armrest with an additional recess for a mobile phone.

In total, the rear bench can accommodate up to three adults. Bulk items that cannot be transported on the cargo platform can be placed in a niche under the reclining seats (photo 21).

For an additional fee, the roof of the pickup truck can be equipped with an electric sunroof and protection from direct sunlight.
