The bright image accompanies the model’s logical transition to the new GA-K platform of the TNGA architecture: this is exactly what the RAV4 has in common with the Camry, and at the same time with the Avalon and Lexus ES. However, this does not mean absolute technical relatedness - the machines are simply scaled according to a similar principle. There is 13 centimeters less space between the axles than the Camry, but 3 centimeters more than the old RAV4 - 2,690 millimeters.
True, the geometry here is somewhat unconventional: usually manufacturers report an increase in the wheelbase in parallel with the overall length, and at the same time an increase in the reserve for passengers and luggage. Here everything is nonlinear in Japanese. The base has become 3 centimeters larger, and the total length has become 5 millimeters smaller. The rear overhang is 30 millimeters shorter and the trunk is 79 liters larger (626 litres). The ground clearance is 15 millimeters higher, and the gap between the driver’s buttocks and the road is the same as it was: the seat has been lowered by the same 15 millimeters. Fortunately, not all the numbers are so disparate: body rigidity was increased by 57% with high-strength steels - and there is nothing to oppose this.

One can only add to the increase in body rigidity an idea that has recently become one of the leitmotifs of car development. “More fun to drive” - this phrase comes from the lips of Toyoda-san himself, and the company is not only developing a new Supra together with BMW, but also customizing new production cars. No, the RAV4, of course, did not become any kind of driver’s car - but general values like the same body rigidity, lower center of gravity and weight distribution, which they were able to achieve at 51:49, have not hurt anyone yet, including off-road. And at the same time, in the new RAV4, the electric power steering motor was moved from the steering column to the rack (the trend is quite popular - the same is true, for example, in Hyundai and Kia ) to make the response and feedback more transparent and accurate. In general, even the same Camry is still far away, but there is meaning in the work done.
The suspension has not undergone any radical changes: MacPherson strut at the front, independent design with double wishbones at the rear. At the rear, we just revised the mounting points for the trailing arms and changed the mounting pattern for the shock absorbers: now they stand more vertically. In general, the suspension was made a little softer: according to the Japanese, this is due to the notorious increase in body rigidity and lower center of gravity.
The list of power units is moderately optimistic: the European options include a two-liter engine paired with a CVT or manual transmission, while the American list includes a 2.5-liter engine with a new eight-speed automatic instead of a six-speed. Against this background, you don’t have to worry about the fact that the main bet in both cases is on the hybrid version, combining a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a CVT. It does, however, have a promising all-wheel drive system with a separate electric motor on the rear axle, which supplies torque to the rear wheels when necessary. However, the “regular” version with a multi-plate clutch that drives the rear wheels usually gives its owners enough confidence.
Well, non-hybrid cars will probably come to us: the pair of two-liter 3ZR-FE and a CVT, obviously, has undergone a minimum of changes, but the 2.5-liter engine is new. This is a unit from the Dynamic Force family - its two-liter relative is installed, for example, on Lexus UX . Here, we recall, a high thermal efficiency of 40%, combined injection (distributed plus direct) and optimized cylinder purging by changing the angle between the intake and exhaust valves, increasing the diameter of the valves themselves, as well as a flatter intake channel. But with all this, the engine is naturally aspirated - and for most buyers this will be a simpler and more important argument than some fine adjustments to the intake and injection. But the promised disappearance of diesel engines will definitely be unpleasant news for many: Toyota is abandoning them in the passenger line , right up to and including the RAV4.
Well, okay, let's talk about the good stuff - about the salon, for example. There is not such a riot of forms here as on the outside, but they added some originality - although, unfortunately, it was not without hackneyed solutions like a protruding tablet on the top of the front panel. This, however, made it possible to logically separate the climate control and multimedia blocks: on top is a touchscreen with buttons and controls on the sides, and below is a climate system with hefty temperature control knobs. And also - move over, Camry - there are now microclimate controls in the back row! Well, in the sense, not a three-zone climate, but deflectors on the central tunnel - and that’s nice, they didn’t exist before. Well, the finishing materials, although heterogeneous, are modern (in terms of the presence of fashionable pseudo-stitching) and generally pleasant.

Having dealt with the impressions, all that remains is to wait. And wait not just for the start of sales, but with almost one hundred percent probability of the moment when the assembly of the new RAV4 will be established at the Toyota plant in St. Petersburg. Since “American aristocrats” like to do everything in the car, because the car is part of their family, in a sense, they also like to drink and eat without leaving the salon. What complaints did they voice about the crossover's interior? Well, let's start with the fact that people who, for example, drink coffee in the morning, could not put the glass down properly, since it simply did not fit into the cup holder, which is why they experienced the wildest discomfort that gnaws at buyers of a pre-restyling car, and to this day day. It was this detail that was corrected in the new type of car. Now everything fits perfectly, which is why the comfort for many motorists has increased significantly.
Salon
The Toyota RAV 4 comes standard with velor seats. The quality of the tailoring itself is very good, but the material is extremely poor, if one might say disgusting. If you have a down jacket, then when you sit on these seats, they will be all down. The driver's seat itself is very comfortable and supports your back.
The torpedo is covered with leatherette and cheap plastic. In general, these materials make the car much cheaper, which, of course, is frustrating. I would like something of better quality and interesting for 1,200,000. The only thing that is difficult to understand is why the Japanese put carbon fiber in this car? This is not a sports foreign car and, to be honest, it looks a little ridiculous.
We have a small number of buttons, a connector for a flash drive, AUX, cigarette lighter, heated seats, sport mode, economy mode. To the right of the steering wheel is a button for descent assistance. The tape recorder is quite simple. It has a built-in radio, CDs, and a clock. I would like to note the large, roomy glove compartment. A small ashtray is also included as standard.
The gearbox has a variator. The variator is not really for Siberia, because the Russian people usually don’t change the variator oil, they drive until it starts to fall apart.

On road
How will the Toyota RAV 4 feel while driving? Most likely, it is better not to travel further than the city. The test drive is carried out in snowy weather off-road. Unfortunately, snowdrifts are not his thing. If it stalls somewhere, then the Rav 4, of course, can leave, but the car is hardly worth killing. As we said earlier, it’s better not to drive it anywhere beyond the city.
The Toyota RAV4 2013 cannot easily drive up a small hill in manual mode; it has to be accelerated or stepped on the gas.
I would like to emphasize that the Toyota RAV 4 is disgusting in cross-country ability.
If you encounter a small snowdrift or curb in city mode, then it will be quite possible to overcome it, but in principle, the CVT gearbox will not allow you to go out into the countryside, mix up mud and snow. You will either overheat it or, in general, completely ruin it.
When driving on the highway, the Toyota RAV 4 shows 3000 rpm at 80 km/h when accelerating. A very average result, which once again confirms that this is a car for calm and comfortable movement around the city. The car moves along the highway very deftly, you can comfortably move long distances. Consumption on an automatic, on a two-liter engine, is about 11-12 liters. The test drive was carried out in icy conditions, and the ABS did not cope - it was impossible to brake.
This is not to say that the sound insulation in the car is excellent, but it is not disgusting either - more or less comfortable. You can make additional noise on the ceiling, bottom, doors.
A more complete Toyota RAV 4 will cost RUB 1,650,000. There are not too many analogues. Of course, you can try to look for some Lexus or Mercedes with an approximate configuration and for the same amount, but you are unlikely to find a new one in the showroom.
If you take care of it and do timely maintenance, then the Toyota RAV 4 will last a very long time, but the quality of new cars is not very good.
Trunk
Electric trunk lid. In the trunk itself there is a small shelf, a full-size spare tire, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. Compared to the previous generation, it increased its volume by 3 cm in width and 10 cm in length. Now the trunk volume is 500 liters, but if you fold out the rear seats, you will be able to get about 700 liters of usable space. To obtain it, it is very easy to fold the back row by pressing the lever. The material is very cheap everywhere, the plastic is extremely easily soiled. The window regulators are made to look like carbon, I don’t like the design, it’s disgusting.

As for the internal appearance of Toyota, the developers did their best here. The finishing is made of high quality materials. The torpedo is somewhat reminiscent of the cockpit of a spaceship, although there is nothing flashy about it. The dashboard is quite convenient and informative. Everything needs to be at your fingertips - the central touchscreen is centrally located, as are all the other buttons and switches that are often used while driving.
Extended variations in position adjustment, as well as the special anatomical structure of the seats themselves, will provide the highest degree of comfort when driving. Another undeniable plus is the armrest.
There is a lot of space in the cabin, but it can be even more if you fold the rear seats. Then the trunk volume will increase significantly, which will allow you to transport bulky items.
