Test drive: Toyota Camry V70 - a different car or an old one in a new wrapper?

The Russian car market has its own peculiarities. There are no certain interesting models here due to the poor quality of roads, fuel and demand. Some cars become available only months after the start of sales in European and American markets.

The start of sales of the new Toyota Camry in the USA took place back in 2017, and it came to Russia only this year and did not disappoint at all. The car was not just slightly modified, it underwent a complete transformation and is practically unlike its predecessor. Foreign and Russian test drives confirmed this.

Now it is more of a hybrid of several previous bodies, and quite successful.

Exterior

Camry has never had a striking appearance. Most called her downright boring. The first look at the 2021 model makes it clear that this is a completely different car. The latest version looks like an aggressive beast with narrowed headlights and a snarling front air intake. The front overhang has become shorter, and the transition lines between the roof and the C-pillar have acquired more grace.

From the rear the car looks no less attractive. It is equipped with lights that extend strongly onto the rear fenders. The shape of the trunk lid has changed. Therefore, Toyota looks no less bright from behind than from the front.

The new Camry seems lower than its predecessor, as if it had fallen to the ground. This effect was achieved due to the fact that the wheelbase increased to 2825 mm, adding 5 cm, but became lower by 3.5 cm.

It has grown by 3.5 cm in width (4885 mm) and by 1.5 cm in length (1840 mm). At the same time, the ground clearance decreased by 5 mm, becoming 155 mm. The dimensions have changed due to the fact that the V70 is built on the new GA-K platform, which is based on the TNGA. The platform is also used for the Avalon, Lexus ES and the new RAV4.

Interior

Previous generations were more focused on rear passengers. Therefore, the second row has always been distinguished by more space. The check confirmed that the new Camry also has enough of it.

The second row in the basic version is equipped with standard seats with a folding armrest. Options include heated seats, the ability to change the seat backs of rear passengers, three-zone climate control, a multimedia system, and electric rear curtains. All control buttons are located in the armrest.

The driver's seat has undergone major changes. The enlarged door makes getting into the car more comfortable. The chair has more height adjustment options and can now be lowered significantly lower than before. Low-slung lovers will like the change. Lateral support in the seat has also changed. The distance between the rollers has increased, which, as a test drive of the model shows, not all drivers will like.

There are more options for adjusting the steering wheel reach, the range has increased by 20 mm, and now reaches 60 mm. The height adjustment range remains the same – 40 mm.

Rough, straight lines are history, and the driver's area in the new model is emphasized by a wave running towards the right side of the central tunnel.

The center console is completely new: the digital clock and large rectangular keys are a thing of the past. Fans of the iconic Camry digital watch were very upset when they learned that they would not be included in the 2021 model. In their place came modern technology and narrow buttons. At the same time, manufacturers did not change all devices to digital ones, leaving them in the classic design.

The steering wheel has concentrated a huge number of buttons and control levers, which makes the driver's ride more comfortable and does not require unnecessary distraction from the road.

The Camry's multimedia system has been redesigned and has a new 7-inch interface. The touchscreen has a good response. The screen allows you to see images from all-round cameras. An 8-inch monitor with standard navigation is an option.

The main governing bodies have also changed. The car is equipped with an electromechanical handbrake, the gearbox now shifts in a straight line, and the gas pedal is mounted to the floor.

For the first row area, Toyota used more expensive and high-quality materials. The steering wheel and gear knob are covered in leather. Most tactile contact areas are made of soft-touch plastic and leatherette. Wood-effect plastic now looks more like mother-of-pearl than a bad fake veneer.

The trunk became slightly smaller (493 liters), losing 13 liters. But due to positive improvements to its shape, it has become more comfortable. If the car's equipment includes the option of changing the backrest tilt of the rear seats with electric drive, then its volume will be reduced to 469 liters.

begins with the careful dismantling of the ceiling trim. During this work, the masters work in a clean set of gloves and do not leave a single scratch or stain on the ceiling.

After removing the ceiling lining, the roof looks like this. There is no factory vibration isolation at all. Well, at least there are a lot of stiffening ribs!

After gaining access inside the door, we degrease all the giblets.

First layer. We dampen the outer sheet of metal with light Comfort mat Dark D3 Premium.

Second layer: we apply the lightest membrane sound insulation specifically for Comfort mat Integra 6 doors, which not only amazingly removes sound, but is also 100% resistant to moisture.

Third layer. The door frame is damped with the same Comfort mat dark D3 Premium.

Fourth layer. The thick relief sound absorber Comfort mat Soft Wave 15 in the form of pyramids will finally delay the sound passing into the cabin from the outside. We apply it to the door trim itself.

Soundproofing the floor, trunk and wheel arches of Camry V70

This is the final, most difficult and most important part of the work, the result of which will make the greatest contribution to the overall effect. To ensure work, we remove everything from the cabin that might interfere: seats, console, floors, trim.

We also completely expose the trunk and take out all the spare parts.

All vibration isolation is already pre-cut before the car arrives by appointment and heated in special custom ovens to 50-55 degrees. Therefore, it takes us about an hour and a half to roll the material to the floor in the cabin and in the trunk. On the floor and wheel arches we have the most powerful and evil vibration damper Comfort mat Ultra Loker 4.2, which will remove low-frequency structural metal noise. Alas, this is not possible for any light and thin materials. That's why we use frame and rigid vibration dampers on the floor, arches and trunk bottom.

Comfort mat Ultra Loker 4.2 carries the Auto-Loker logo on board and is manufactured individually on a separate conveyor only for our special center as the flagship Comfort mat throughout Russia. The material has a thickness of 4.2 mm, two layers of foil (!!!) and unprecedented efficiency with proper rolling. This is our pride and our flagship. It must be placed hot.

In the trunk, the flagship Ultra Loker 4.2 is placed on the arches and the bottom of the spare wheel (very thin metal), and the remaining parts (floor and fenders) are treated with lightweight Comfort mat Dark D3.

Having finished damping, we move on to sound absorption of the interior. On the floor in the cabin we place a second layer - noise-insulating foam rubber Comfort mat Vision Red 6, and under the rear seat there is a two-layer sound insulator Comfort mat Blockshot 7.

Then we add a third layer to the floor - the Blocker soundproofing membrane. Thus, the entire bottom of the cabin is covered not only with sound insulation, but also with a sound membrane (black and blue) over the entire area, which guarantees compliance with the highest standards of modern car sound insulation. We return the standard felt sound insulation to the floor. Thus, the floor in our Camry contains 4 layers of sound insulation of all types. It's amazing.

We also treat the trunk everywhere with Block Shot 7 mm. Thus, our trunk is under reliable protection of the sound membrane.

The trunk lid is treated with a vibration damper, and its trim is sound absorbent and anti-creaking.

The procedure is as follows: we remove the panel, treat both the panel itself and all the components + elements of the under-torpedo space and the engine shield with a noise absorber. The result of the work is complete elimination of squeaks (if there were any), as well as a reduction in engine noise.

We treat the pre-degreased metal of the arch with the most powerful vibration insulation Comfort mat Ultra Loket 4.2 mm. (hot 55 degrees) with two layers of foil and roll the hot mats with maximum diligence to the body. After cooling, the material is like concrete.

Then we prepare a special polymer composition and spray it with a professional gun.

This composition is 100% polymer, and is used in any automobile plant to seal the welds of any foreign car. Here we pursue the goal of not only improving sound insulation, but also completely waterproofing the arch, so that our work is forever protected from dirt and moisture.

Once the spray joint sealant dries completely, it turns into rubber with incredible adhesion. You won't be able to tear out even a scrap of material. Everything is so tightly bound by polymer. Before installation, the standard fender liner itself is treated with thin and elastic Comfort mat Fusion foam rubber, which is 100% moisture resistant. We install the fender liner back in its place. In this option, the arch will still be guaranteed to be ventilated and there will never be even a hint of moisture or condensation. We guarantee this.

Engine

Unlike everything else, Camry engines have not changed. The line for the Russian market includes two naturally aspirated gasoline engines of 2 (150 hp) and 2.5 liters (181 hp), and a 3.5 liter V6 engine (249 hp). Variants of the car with less powerful engines are complemented by a six-speed automatic transmission. And the V6 is paired with an eight-speed automatic.

The version with a 3.5 liter engine is quite economical: it consumes 6.4 liters on the highway, 12.5 liters in urban conditions, and 8.7 liters in mixed mode.

Equipment

The list of equipment available on the Camry includes a redesigned Safety Sense security system. Unlike the previous modification, the updated sedan is capable of independently:

  • slow down for pedestrians;
  • stop;
  • drive away with cruise control on.

Additionally, a head-up display is provided that displays information about the current speed, a navigation map and other necessary alerts on the windshield.

The manufacturer also included an updated multimedia complex in the list of available equipment. The 7-inch touch screen has improved graphics and responds faster to touches. If desired, the driver can customize the interface of the multimedia complex to his preferences. Camry versions equipped with a navigation system have an 8-inch screen.

After the update, the sedan received all-round cameras and a heated steering wheel function. At the same time, Camry is still deprived of access to Yandex services, whereas the previous modification of the sedan had such equipment.
