Toyota Avensis Ⅱ for 500 thousand rubles - a sedan whose reliability is a role model

Toyota Avensis 2007 (2 generations) is still very popular in the Russian secondary market. This model has a rather non-standard exterior design. But this circumstance does not in any way affect the choice of buyers of used cars, since Avensis offers reliable engines and gearboxes, a comfortable and spacious interior. The demand for this model is also due to the fact that it slowly depreciates in the secondary market. Therefore, if necessary, it can be easily sold without losing money.

Specifications Features

Toyota Avensis 2007 differs from its closest competitors in that it is equipped with a fairly wide range of engines. The following power units can be purchased with the Japanese model:

  • 1.6-liter 110 hp;
  • 1.8-liter 129 hp;
  • 2-liter 147 hp;
  • 2.4-liter 163 hp;
  • 2-liter diesel with 116 hp;
  • 2.2-liter diesel with 148 or 175 hp.

Officially, the 2007 Toyota Avensis with a 1.6-liter engine and diesel units was not supplied to Russia. In this regard, a sedan with such engines is difficult to find on the secondary market. Among diesel units, the 175-horsepower unit is considered the most problematic. True, this mainly concerns the fact that it does not tolerate low-quality fuel, due to which the fuel system quickly fails. By 200 thousand kilometers, all diesel engines require adjustment of the turbine geometry and cleaning of the EGR valve.

With a 2.2-liter turbodiesel, the cylinder head gaskets wear out quite early. Over time, this engine's catalyst cracks. And with a mileage of 150 thousand kilometers, the thermostat brushes, pump and starter wear out.

The 1.8-liter engine is unpleasantly surprising with its design. Due to miscalculations in it, this engine begins to actively consume oil early. The disadvantages of the 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine include wear of its cushions, ineffective piston cooling or insufficient oil drainage. The last two problems are more common. They provoke excessive noise during operation of the unit and vibration. As a result, this defect leads to a decrease in the mobility of the oil scraper rings in the piston channel, which is why car owners have to spend about 27 thousand rubles on repairs. Over time, scoring marks form on the connecting rod bearings of a 1.8-liter engine. This is evidenced by a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. Also, characteristic features of this engine include rapid wear of plastic bushings, which requires replacing the attachment belt tensioner.

The 2-liter engine is also picky about fuel quality. During operation, this unit may pull out the bolts that secure the cylinder heads. Such repairs will cost about 70 thousand rubles, but you cannot do without it, since this problem leads to quite serious troubles. In addition, the 2-liter engine has fuel leaks through the o-ring of the fuel pressure sensor. As for the most reliable engine, it turned out to be a 2.4-liter unit. Its main disadvantage is excessive oil consumption.

Toyota Avensis 2nd generation was supplied to the Russian market with a 5-band manual, 4- and 5-speed automatic transmissions. The first box is not known for its reliability. After every 100 thousand kilometers it is necessary to replace the bearings of the primary and secondary shafts. If you do not carry out this procedure, the transmission may jam while the car is moving. An automatic transmission, compared to a manual transmission, demonstrates better reliability. It will need its first fairly serious repair after 300 thousand kilometers.

Features of the body and interior

Part of the inflated price asked for a used Toyota Avensis is due to the fact that the car has a high-quality body. Traces of corrosion do not appear on it for many years. The paint coating, which can withstand mechanical stress, played a significant role in this. When buying a Japanese sedan, you should take into account one feature: the hood and bumper are painted a different color at the factory. In addition, after the first 2-3 years of operation, the optics begin to fog up and fade.

As with the body, car owners have no complaints about the quality of the interior of the 2nd generation Toyota Avensis. The interior is lined with wear-resistant plastic, which does not creak even after several years. The only drawbacks of the interior are that the leather on the front seats peels off relatively quickly, and the driver's seat begins to make unpleasant sounds. Avensis on-board equipment is evaluated differently. Basically, the complaints come down to the failure of elements of the air conditioning system (motor, compressor, etc.). It is also possible that the resistors may break, causing the trip computer screen to stop working.

Toyota Avensis

Judging by TUV statistics, the Avensis's reserve of vitality is more than enough to last for many years. Even in old age, Toyota rarely presents unpleasant surprises. This is confirmed by the statistics of the German technical control service TUV, which carries out technical inspection of cars in Germany. In the three-year-old competition, Avensis took 12th place out of 125 possible - only 3.2% of cars failed the technical exam on the first try. The same result was achieved by one of its main competitors, the Mazda6, as well as by the Porsche Boxster, Opel Meriva and Ford Focus. At the age of five and seven, Avensis is in 15th place in the ranking, and nine-year-olds hold the 9th position.

Overall rating

Avensis is available in three body styles. Unlike the sedan, the hatchback and practical station wagon are not widely used in our country. The car is distinguished by smooth lines and good aerodynamics. And from the point of view of comfort and ergonomics, Toyota has always been at its best. In Russia, dealers sold Avensis in fixed configurations. Already in the initial version there are seven airbags, ABS, climate control, power accessories, on-board computer, heated front seats, a rain sensor, and a stereo system. In 2006, the model was modernized.

Repair costs

A Japanese sedan is relatively cheap to maintain, provided that the owner follows the rules for car care. The most problematic parts are the suspension elements that need to be changed relatively frequently:

  • front stabilizer struts and bushings (every 30 thousand kilometers);
  • rear stabilizer struts and bushings (80 thousand kilometers);
  • front shock absorbers (120 thousand kilometers);
  • ball joints, silent blocks, wheel bearings (150 thousand kilometers);
  • rear shock absorbers and levers (200 thousand kilometers).

The steering racks on the Avensis are not reliable enough for a car of this class. They often have to be changed every 50 thousand kilometers. This procedure will cost approximately 60 thousand rubles. Most of the engine restoration work is estimated at a similar amount.

Toyota Avensis

Flaws

According to TUV experts, Avensis has practically no weak points. On cars that came off the production line before 2005, some 1ZZ-FE (1.8 l) gasoline engines suffered from increased oil appetite - due to insufficient cooling of the piston bottom, the oil scraper rings lost mobility. The problem was solved by changing the engine design. On cars of the first years of production, when the mileage exceeded 70 thousand km, the steering rack could rattle.

Overall rating

The first generation Avensis replaced the legendary Carina E on the assembly line. The car was designed to suit the tastes of Europeans and its production was established in the Old World, Barnston in England. This is not the most spacious representative of the family class; the lack of free space is especially noticeable for tall riders. From the very beginning, the list of basic equipment included four airbags and ABS. After restyling in 2000, air conditioning was added to it.

Alternative choice

Instead of the 2007 Toyota Avensis, you can pay attention to the following cars:

  • Opel Astra;
  • Skoda Octavia;
  • Renault Fluence;
  • Honda Civic.

The Opel Astra has two undeniable advantages compared to the Avensis: attractive appearance and affordable price. The German model costs 2 times less than its competitor. But it's the price difference that shows the Japanese sedan is better than the Astra in the long run. However, the German model also demonstrates high reliability and has a long service life.

Skoda Octavia looks more attractive in this vein. The Czech model stands out from many competitors with its successful suspension and durable engines. At the same time, for an Octavia on the secondary market today they are asking about 1.5 times less than for an Avensis, when there is no significant difference between these cars.

The same can be said about the Renault Fluence. Moreover, the French sedan, if we consider it in relation to Russian roads, has an almost indestructible suspension. Moreover, a number of chassis parts for the Fluence can be taken from cheaper cars. As in the case of the Avensis, over time the on-board equipment of the French model fails. And most often it is the air conditioning system that has to be repaired.

Honda Civic, in comparison with Avensis, is equipped with engines comparable in power and reliability. The first model, according to motorists, has a more attractive appearance, although there are many complaints about its chassis. In addition, the Civic is more expensive to maintain, while the difference in price with the Avensis for this car is small.
