The Toyota Avensis is the successor to the popular Carina E model. Released in 1997, the car differed from its predecessor in its larger dimensions. The first generation Avensis was produced until 2002 in three body styles: station wagon, liftback and sedan. The French design center of the concern was responsible for developing the body of the second generation of cars. The platform of the new model has grown a little more, resulting in the total length of the car being 4630 mm. Initially, the Toyota Avensis was equipped with one diesel and three gasoline power units. Later, the engine line was supplemented with one more gasoline and one diesel engine. It is noteworthy that the 2.4-liter gasoline unit with a capacity of 161 horsepower has become the most powerful solution in the Avensis series. A major achievement of the car was the result of Euro-NCAP crash tests. According to the testing results, the car was recognized as the safest vehicle, having managed to score 34 points out of 36. In 2006, the Japanese corporation once again updated the Toyota Avensis, changing both the car body and the interior.
The 2012 model year Toyota Avensis debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, and in October the first cars arrived at Russian dealerships. This model is a restyled version of the third generation Avensis, launched in 2008. Compared to the previous one, the 2012 Toyota Avensis received updated front and rear optics, bumpers and radiator grille. The interior has also been seriously redesigned. On the Russian market, the new Toyota Avensis 2012 is offered in two body styles: a classic sedan and a station wagon (Tourer). Two engines have disappeared from the line of power units that equipped cars of the previous generation. As a result, only one gasoline engine remained, with a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 147 hp. In addition to it, the updated Toyota Avensis 2012 is equipped with two gearboxes: a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT. With it, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, and with manual transmission it is a second faster. However, fuel consumption in the combined cycle, regardless of the type of transmission, remains approximately the same at about 6.5 liters per 100 km. The 2012 Toyota Avensis sedan comes in four trim levels, and the station wagon only in two. In the most budget option “Comfort”, buyers have access to air conditioning, a basic audio system with 6 speakers and a USB input, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors and 7 airbags. Also, in any configuration, the updated 2012 Toyota Avensis is equipped with a full range of active safety systems, including stability control, ABS, EBD and traction control. Among the most interesting options of the new Toyota Avensis 2012 is the Toyota Touch&Go Plus navigation system, available only in the top version, electrically adjustable front seats with a memory function, as well as a system for easy access to the cabin and engine starting using a Smart card.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show 2011, Toyota presented the updated Toyota Avensis 2012 in sedan and station wagon body styles. Restyling affected both the appearance of the Avensis and its interior. The updated design has refreshed the Toyota Avensis, making it more attractive.
The dimensions of the updated Toyota Avensis 2012 have not changed. The facelift did not affect the basic structure of the car. However, the front of the Avensis now sports a new redesigned grille with a chrome strip on top, new sleeker headlights with daytime running lights. At the rear there are new lanterns. Also installed are new front and rear bumpers, new 16″, 17″ and 18″ alloy wheels depending on the configuration. In the Toyota Avensis interior, the center console received changes; the color of the instrument lighting changed from red to white. In addition, the car received new upholstery and higher quality finishing.
An innovation in the updated Avensis 2012 is a proprietary multimedia system, offered in three versions: Touch, Touch and Go and Touch and Go Plus. All three versions have a 6.1″ color touchscreen, Bluetooth, rear parking camera, phone book, audio system and on-board computer as standard. Depending on the configuration and market, the system can be supplemented with a navigator, an overspeed warning system, an SMS sending function, an email client, and an audio system with 11 speakers.
Despite the fact that the Toyota Avensis has already received five stars on a five-point scale in safety tests using the EuroNCAP method, the updated Avensis 2012 continues to be supplemented with new safety and driver assistance systems. New in this segment will be the Pre-Crash Safety System. The system uses a radar sensor to constantly scan the area in front of the car, warning the driver of a possible collision risk. When a collision is imminent, the system will automatically apply the brakes as effectively as possible to try to reduce the impact of the collision.
Other aids include an adaptive cruise control system and a turn detection system. As standard, the updated Toyota Avensis 2012 received ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability and Traction Control System.
Toyota also made changes under the hood of the 2012 Avensis, improving the 2.0 liter D-4D diesel engine with 124 hp. The engine was equipped with a new turbocharger and the combustion chamber of this diesel engine was changed. As a result, engineers managed to achieve a reduction in average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 15% from 139 to 119 g/km.
The updated Toyota Avensis 2012 will soon appear in Toyota dealerships.
