At the beginning of autumn 2021, at the annual Frankfurt car exhibition, a new SUV of the Land Cruiser Prado line (photo below) was presented by the largest Japanese concern, Toyota.

In total, during its existence, Toyota has released four generations of Land Cruiser:
- The first generation SUVs, produced from 1987 to 1996, were initially designed for driving in particularly difficult conditions. Three- and five-door cars in different markets were called Land Cruiser II, 70 Prado or Bundera. The main goal of Toyota marketers was to promote the Land Cruiser Prado in the face of fierce competition with another Japanese giant - Mitsubishi. At that time, Toyota won the race: the sales rate of the new SUV in the Japanese and international markets exceeded the similar indicators of Mitsubishi by almost 1.5 times: buyers liked the car’s emphatically confident appearance, ease of operation and reliability of the SUV.
- The second generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 series was produced on the basis of Toyota's Hilux Surf. As before, the main rival of the SUV was the Mitsubishi Pajero. Car production ceased in 2002 due to the preparation of the new generation Land Cruiser Prado.
- The third generation Land Cruiser Prado, produced from 2002 to 2009, belonged to the 120th series. The SUV's base remains the same. For the first time, an automatic transmission (at that time five-speed) was introduced. Buyers were given the opportunity to choose between all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive (with the option of all-wheel drive).
- The fourth generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (150 series) has been produced since 2009 to this day; This is exactly what the Land Cruiser Prado 2021 belongs to. The new SUVs turned out to be even more massive, their interior is more spacious, and their frame is stronger. The first restyling of the car was carried out in 2013; the changes affected mainly the appearance: the body lines have become smoother and more “fluid”, the size of the front and rear headlights has noticeably increased, and the side windows now represent a single strip, in harmony with the overall impression of the Land Cruiser Prado’s swiftness.
The second restyling was carried out by the manufacturer quite recently; the result was the new Land Cruiser Prado (photo below).
Currently, the Land Cruiser Prado sales market covers 190 countries, including the Russian Federation and the CIS countries. Traditionally, demand is high in the countries of North America and the European Union, as well as in the homeland of the SUV - in Japan. In Russia, over a year and a half, from the beginning of 2016 to the middle of 2021, more than 20,000 cars were sold - and, of course, domestic buyers will not ignore the new version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021, even faster, safer and more reliable.
Exterior of Land Cruiser Prado (exterior photo)
The appearance of the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado (photo below) has become more attractive. The original radiator grille with alternating darkened and shiny chrome strips and a huge Toyota logo visually flows into the headlights that taper towards the sides of the car. The aggressive look from the front is given by small fog lights hidden in the corners and a protruding bumper. The aggressive image of the SUV is complemented by a complex stamping hood with recesses in the center and edges.
The side view of the SUV (photo below) has changed slightly. The high wheel arches and sloping “forehead” of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021 remain the same as in the older models. The slight tilt of the body forward has also been preserved, which meets more aesthetic than technological requirements. Among the changes are the elongated line of the “nose” of the Land Cruiser Prado and the rear spoiler of the trunk door.
Toyota's luggage compartment is traditionally comfortable thanks to an absolutely flat corrugated floor and a wide rear door. The rear view of the new Land Cruiser (photo below) leaves no doubt about the manufacturer’s care for customers: everything is done in the best traditions of previous versions of the SUV.
Large items that do not fit inside the car can be placed on the flat roof, and the presence of high roof rails (photo below) guarantees reliable fixation of the transported cargo.
Comfort package
The updated 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado model in the Comfort version is available for 3,150,000 rubles. The car is offered with a 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a capacity of 177 hp. s., volume 2.8 liters and 6-speed automatic transmission. The Comfort version is equipped with:
- heated seats;
- adjustable front seats;
- tire pressure sensor;
- keyless access to start the engine;
- rear view camera;
- climate control;
- cruise control;
- systems for assisting descent and ascent uphill;
- electric front seats.
Photo of the interior (car salon)
The inside view of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021 (photo below) will undoubtedly impress luxury car lovers. Only high-quality materials are used to decorate the interior: leather, metal and plastic that meet European safety standards.
The buyer can choose between 3 interior color options:
- black;
- black-brown;
- beige.
The 4-spoke steering wheel (photo below) is trimmed in leather and equipped with 10 multimedia system control buttons. The dashboard is equipped with 4 analog instruments and a small rectangular on-board computer screen.
The superbly organized center stack (photo below) houses an 8-inch touchscreen. Along the edges and below there are additional buttons and shims, directly above the monitor there are driver and passenger air vents located next to each other.
The central tunnel of the SUV looks relatively modest: a centrally located gear shift lever, two cup holders and a folding common armrest - no frills.
The seats of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021 are designed to provide comfort for passengers of any size and height while traveling. Pleasant little touches include heated and ventilated seats, as well as the ability to individually adjust the position of each seat. The basic configuration of the car is equipped with 7 airbags, which in the event of an emergency completely envelop the interior of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021.
The SUV can accommodate up to 7 people. The seats of the third and second row (photo below), if necessary to increase the volume of the luggage compartment, can be folded in a horizontal plane.
Interior of a car with an updated body
The interior was also not left unchanged - the finishing material has changed, the new front console is immediately noticeable, which has been completely rearranged by adding new control buttons. There is also a large central armrest with a cooling box. Climate control got rid of round temperature regulators; in the new version, adjustment is carried out using buttons. To be honest, this is not very convenient, since the adjustment interval is half a degree, and if you need to increase or decrease the temperature by several degrees, you will have to press the keys repeatedly. The display diagonal of the multimedia system has increased, graphics and screen resolution have increased. However, the system firmware remains the same.
From an ergonomic point of view, everything in this model is thought out in detail and perfectly implemented.
Vehicle dimensions
After restyling, the dimensions of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2018 are:
- body length - 4.84 m;
- height - 1.84 m;
- car width - 1.86 m;
- wheelbase - 2.8 m;
- track width - 1.56/1.56 m;
- ground clearance - 0.215 cm;
- The total weight of the SUV is 2.85 tons.
The high ground clearance allows the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021 to overcome water obstacles up to 0.7 m. The new SUV can drive onto an inclined plane at an angle of up to 31° (the value decreased by a degree compared to the previous version of the Land Cruiser Prado) and slide down at an angle of 25 °.
The minimum volume of a car's luggage compartment is 620 liters. Due to the second and third rows of passenger seats, this value can be increased to 1935 liters.
Dimensions and appearance of the car
Externally, the car remains the same, so fans of the already classic 2013 model will be satisfied, and the rest will have to accept the fact that Japanese designers have already found their ideal and are not going to deviate from it. The dimensions are quite standard for a premium SUV:
- Length: 4780 mm;
- Width: 1885 mm;
- Height: 1585 mm;
- Wheelbase: 2790 mm;
- Trunk volume: 621/1934 l;
- Ground clearance: 220 mm.
Against the backdrop of the same Land Rovers, which have moved away from the traditions of the brand and are moving further and further away from sharp straight lines, the Prado remains a courageous and aggressive car, which is intended not only for parquet, but is not averse to fighting off-road.
Technical characteristics of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
Toyota will equip the new Land Cruiser Prado with three types of engines:
- on diesel fuel, 2.8 dm3/177 horsepower;
- on gasoline, 2.7 dm3/163 horsepower;
- on gasoline, 4 dm3/282 horsepower.
Fuel consumption per 100 km will be, depending on the type of engine and road conditions, 7.4–11.6 liters.
Already in the basic configuration, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2021 will be equipped with full-fledged dynamic cruise control with autopilot. The new SUV provides heating for the driver and passenger seats, rear-view mirrors and windshield, as well as washer nozzles.
Toyota gives the buyer the opportunity to choose between a manual and automatic transmission (five-/six- and six-speed, respectively).
All-wheel drive SUVs are equipped with a reduction gear and a differential lock system, as well as a parking assistant and a road marking monitoring system.
Price issue
The cheapest option is a car with a 2.7-liter gasoline engine and a budget rag interior; such a car will cost two million rubles. But we still love Prado for its diesel engine; a car equipped with such an engine and automatic transmission will cost from 2,585,000 rubles. Premium configurations with navigation, air suspension and other goodies will cost a pretty penny - 3,193,000 rubles.
When compared with direct competitors like the Volkswagen Touareg or Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 DI-D, the price tag is comparable and the choice depends on personal preferences and the tasks set for the car. If you do not go beyond well-paved roads, then there is little point in sacrificing comfort for the sake of incredible cross-country ability, and therefore the German will look more advantageous, but if you are looking for a real station wagon, the new Prado will leave behind even the new Land Rover Discovery, which is already at the start It costs like a luxury solution from a Japanese concern. Thus, we got the same legendary SUV, but more aggressive and capable of showing itself in city conditions not only as a car for a large family, but also as a very fast toy, pressing the gas pedal of which can guarantee a considerable surge of adrenaline even for seasoned racers.
