Toyota Prado fuel filter: where is it located, replacement

In accordance with the maintenance frequency table for the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, it is necessary to replace the fuel filter (original number 23303-64010) at least once every 20 thousand kilometers.

Taking into account the peculiarities of our climate and the quality of diesel fuel, it is advisable to change the fuel filter on a car with a diesel engine during seasonal maintenance, that is, in preparation for winter (summer) operation.

It often becomes necessary to replace the fuel filter in the off-season, when the ambient temperature is already below zero, and gas stations sell summer fuel (sometimes passing it off as winter). In this case, there is a high probability that the fuel filter will become waxy and will need to be replaced.

Attention! There is fuel residue in the fuel filter, be careful not to get yourself wet.

  1. We unscrew the filter housing itself counterclockwise; you can use a special wrench or tool for removing oil filters.
  2. The new fuel filter comes with an o-ring for the water sensor; it must be installed in place of the old one, moistened with diesel fuel and screwed to the filter.
  3. We also moisten the mounting surface of the filter with the gasket with diesel fuel and screw it until it touches the bracket, after which we turn it ¾ of a turn by hand.
  4. We install the fuel filter assembly with the support on the car, connect the fuel hoses, and then pump up the fuel by pressing the valve with your hand (the button on top of the filter) until the valve becomes very elastic.
  5. We get into the car and start the engine, let it run for a couple of minutes and make sure that the engine runs without failure.

Important! The engine may run rough at first

If the engine runs intermittently, check the tightness of the fuel system in those places where the hoses were removed, pump the fuel again by hand and start the engine again.

After making sure that after replacing the fuel filter there are no fuel leaks, close the hood and continue operating your car.

Why is a fuel filter necessary?

Fuel filters have appeared since the creation of cars with internal combustion engines and have undergone significant evolution. The power of engines increased, their volume changed, but the need to purify fuel from foreign impurities is still relevant today.

The fuel equipment of a diesel engine is manufactured with micron precision. Fuel injectors of a diesel engine with a Common Rail system, a fuel rail - these parts of a modern engine require not only high-quality fuel, but also the absence of foreign impurities.

On cars since 2015, the on-board computer will notify you of the need to replace the filter. Considering the quality of diesel fuel, we recommend performing this work at less than 20,000 km.

Foreign impurities in the fuel are not only sand particles, but also water, which can get into the fuel either when refueling a car, or form in the tank as condensation. The requirements for fuel filtration for diesel engines are much higher than for gasoline engines.

Replacing the fuel filter on Prado 120, complete instructions

Replacing the fuel filter on your Prado 120 is a necessary part of preventative maintenance. The filter device traps particles of rust and debris contained in the fuel and protects the engine from destruction.

How often should you change the fuel filter?

The filter device retains up to 50 grams of impurities for every 5000 km. The frequency of replacement is indicated by the manufacturer in the instructions. It is 15-25 thousand kilometers. An unscheduled replacement for Prado is needed if:

  • there are interruptions in engine operation, it “troits” or “sneezes”;
  • power is significantly reduced;
  • the car's movement becomes uneven, especially on slopes;
  • fuel consumption increases;
  • The engine often stalls, after which it does not start for a long time.

Rapid clogging is associated with low quality gasoline or diesel. You can change the fuel filter on a Prado 120 on diesel and gasoline with your own hands. During replacement, you must follow fire safety rules, especially when working with a Toyota engine running on gasoline.

How to replace the fuel filter on a Prado 120

To replace you will need:

  • new filter element and fasteners;
  • wrenches and socket wrenches;
  • pliers to remove clamps from fuel hoses;
  • flashlight;
  • rubber gloves and safety glasses.

The operating procedure is simple. It is used to replace the Prado 120 fuel filter on 4-liter gasoline and other models. At the preparation stage it is necessary:

  • place a rag in the back of the car to prevent fuel from spilling;
  • remove the fuse from the fuel line, it is located under the hood;
  • open the tank;
  • start the car and wait until the engine stalls to reduce the pressure, otherwise you may be doused with fuel;
  • wait until the mechanisms cool down.

You can start dismantling:

  • disconnect the negative battery;
  • release the clamps and remove the hoses;
  • unscrew the nuts on the filter cover;
  • remove the filter assembly;
  • unscrew the bolt, pull off the protective casing and remove the water sensor;
  • disconnect the heated cover;
  • install the prepared filter element and secure it;
  • put all the parts in place;
  • pump fuel using a pump installed in the upper part of the filter assembly.

The operating procedure may vary slightly for different engine models. Before assembly, you need to install new gaskets, having previously lubricated them with oil.

Sometimes the engine does not start the first time. An error message appears on the panel. To eliminate it, you need:

  • turn off the ignition;
  • remove the connector located next to the pump;
  • turn on the ignition for 30 seconds;
  • reinstall the connector.

After this, you can start the car again.

The price of the filter is much lower (from $40, depending on the country of origin) than the cost of engine repair. Timely replacement – protection from unnecessary costs.

The process of replacing the Toyota Prado fuel filter

Before you start replacing the fuel pump, do not forget to unpack the part you purchased and relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Otherwise, you risk dousing yourself in gasoline. Follow fire safety precautions and work only with gloves. Be careful not to leak fuel.

Let's look at the further sequence of actions using the Toyota Prado 150 as an example:

  • Open the gas tank hatch and carefully unscrew the cap from its neck. From the relay and fuse box located in the engine compartment, remove the blue relay

  • Try starting the car - this will relieve the pressure. Of course, the car will not be able to start without the relay removed.
  • Remove the negative terminal from the battery. To avoid short circuit, move the wire to the side.
  • Remove the hose from the upper fitting of the filter and put the rubber cap on it. Before disconnecting it, place a cloth between the wing and the engine, as a small amount of fuel may leak out. It is better to put a regular bag on the hose itself, otherwise dirt will get into it.
  • Also remove the protection from the lower fitting - the plastic casing. We unscrew the filter - it is held on by three 10mm bolts. It is also advisable to put a bag over the lower hose. Carefully remove the red retaining ring from the hose, as it cannot be purchased separately.
  • Install the new part in place of the old one, connect all hoses and wires. Reinstall the relay, connect the battery contacts.
  • Start the car to check the filter's functionality.

The procedure is simple, and even a beginner can handle it. But if you have any questions, you are afraid to carry out repairs yourself or damage any of the elements of the system, the best solution would be to contact a specialist. A professional master will quickly replace the TF with a new one, charging only a couple of thousand for the work.

After this, we disconnect the fuel hoses from which we previously removed the clamps. Be careful there is diesel fuel in the system. After this, you can remove the fuel filter from the bracket.

Then unscrew the protection from below (it is located at the bottom and covers the water sensor). After this, install the filter in a vice and unscrew it. After this, we install the water sensor on the new filter, having previously lubricated the rubber band and the top cover. Then install water sensor protection. Now the filter can be installed in the engine compartment and reassembled in the reverse order.

Attention:

Since the new filter is empty, it is necessary to pump in fuel using the pump located in the upper part. Only after pumping (make sure that fuel is supplied) can pipes and clamps be installed. Next, you should bleed again and only after that the engine can be started.
