Toyota Camry is a sedan of the Japanese brand, which is at the junction of family and business class. The first generation was introduced in 1982 and since then has been invariably present in the Toyota model range.
The current eighth-generation Camry model with the factory designation XV70 was presented at the 2021 Detroit Auto Show. In 2018, the new model went on sale on the Russian market, after it began to be produced at the Russian Toyota plant in St. Petersburg.
The new model is radically different from its predecessor in design and driving mood. The car began to be perceived as more sporty and, together with the new 3.5 engine and 8-speed automatic, dynamic. The interior design has also received a completely updated styling. At one glance at the photo of the car, you understand for sure that this is a completely new car.

New Toyota Camry 2021 body
The eighth generation Camry XV70 is built on the new modular architecture TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). The transition to a new architecture, according to the manufacturer, allows “to apply advanced engineering solutions and create more comfortable, reliable and safe cars.” The Camry uses a variant of the GA-K platform, which also powers the Avalon, Lexus ES and RAV4. When creating the body, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels are used. This made it possible to reduce body weight by 25%, while increasing body torsional rigidity by 30%. To lighten the car and lower the center of gravity, the hood was made of aluminum, and underneath there was a power strut between the supports of the front struts. Laser welding is used in body assembly.
The 2019-2020 Camry body design is completely new. The car has become a little longer and wider, but at the same time lower, the front and rear pillars have a greater slope. The style is a bit like the sixth generation Camry in the XV40 body. All changes in appearance can be seen in the photo.
The American market offers two front end design options - “sporty” and more “executive”. For us, only the “executive” version with a spectacular mouth with horizontal ribs is provided.
The headlights are all LED - low and high beam, daytime running lights, fog lights, turn signal. Only in simple versions the front turn signals and rear lights have incandescent lamps (starting with Prestige Safety, the rear lights are also LED).
The side mirrors are large, electrically adjustable, electrically folding and turn signal repeaters in the housing.
In the 2021 model year, the S-Edition package, which received two-tone body paint, bumper trims with red accents, a spoiler on the trunk lid, 18″ specially designed wheels and S-Edition emblems on the body.
Toyota Camry is traditionally offered only with a 4-door sedan body. Its length is 4885 mm, width is 1840 mm, height is 1455 mm. Wheelbase 2825 mm (+50 mm compared to its predecessor).
Despite the fact that the body itself has become lighter, the curb weight of the car has increased slightly compared to its predecessor. Strengthening the body and various equipment to improve safety make themselves felt. Depending on the version and configuration, the curb weight is from 1570 kg to 1700 kg.
The trunk decreased slightly with the change of generations - to 493 liters. And in the Luxury Safety and Executive Safety versions it is even smaller - 469 liters (due to the electric rear seat backrests). There is no electric trunk drive.
There are 6 color options available for the body. For the color “metallic” or “pearl” you need to pay an additional 21,000 and 32,000 rubles, respectively.

Toyota Camry 2021 Engine and Transmission
In our market, only gasoline engines are offered for the new model. Two of them, time-tested 4-cylinder engines, were inherited from the new product from its predecessor. The design has a mechanism for adjusting the valve timing at the intake and exhaust, distributed fuel injection. These engines are combined with the same proven, but improved for the new model, 6-speed automatic transmissions. Also offered for Russia is a new 3.5-liter V6, which is combined with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive.
The base 2AR-FE engine with a volume of 2 liters develops a power of 150 hp. at 6,500 rpm, and the maximum torque of 192 Nm is achieved at 4,700 rpm. Combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
A more powerful alternative is the 2.5-liter 6AR-FSE four with a power of 181 horsepower (6,000 rpm) and a torque of 231 Nm at 4,100 rpm. It is also equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The most powerful engine is the completely new 2GR-FKS engine. V-shaped 6-cylinder, volume 3.5 liters. It was specially derated to 249 hp. to reduce taxation. Torque of 356 Nm develops at 4700 rpm.

The motors comply with Euro-5 environmental standards. You can refuel with “92” gasoline. Fuel tank capacity is 60 liters.
In the future, the Russian Toyota plant plans to master the assembly of a Camry with a new 2.5-liter engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
2021 Toyota Camry Suspension, Brakes and Wheels
A completely new suspension has been developed for the GA-K platform. The front is independent, with McPherson struts, the rear is independent, multi-link.
The new suspension strikes a good balance between handling and ride quality. For the sake of a lower center of gravity, they even reduced the ground clearance to 155 mm (-10 mm). The Camry copes with minor irregularities nobly, although as the speed increases, road irregularities make their way into the cabin more noticeably. The suspension is energy-intensive and, in general, superior to its competitors in terms of smoothness. When you go too fast in a corner, all four wheels begin to slide predictably.
The steering is much sharper and more responsive, with linear reactive action. The electric power steering is now located on the steering rack rather than on the shaft.
The brakes are disc brakes on both axles, ventilated at the front. The braking distance from a speed of 100 km/h to a complete stop is less than 37 meters. The basic configuration already includes ABS, brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BAS).
Camry, depending on the version, is equipped with 16, 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels. Each wheel size has its own design. Tire sizes are 205/65 R16, 215/55 R17 and 235/45 R18, respectively. A full-size wheel with an alloy disc is used as a spare wheel.
Driving impressions
If memory serves, the Toyota Camry has always been a comfortable and reliable sedan, albeit without much excitement to drive. A nice offer in the segment, but everything changed after last year's update. Double rear suspension, a lower center of gravity and a strong body structure with a 30% increase in torsional rigidity result in improved dynamics and therefore improved driver enjoyment. The accuracy of movements and control has noticeably increased. The new eight-speed automatic transmission has become a reliable partner for the engines. The standard four-cylinder engines will satisfy most drivers, providing the right combination of performance and economy. Fans of thrilling driving will appreciate the 305 horsepower of the V6 engine, while environmentalists and innovators will rejoice at the hybrid power plant.
Toyota Camry 2021 interior
The 5-seater Camry interior has received a completely new design. The interior design uses soft plastic, matte wood-look inserts, fabric, and leather.
Visibility is excellent thanks to the high seating position, large windshield and thin A-pillars.
The upper part of the front panel with elaborate lines is now turned towards the driver. In simpler versions, the multimedia system has a 7” touch screen. The more expensive ones will have the Toyota Touch 2 system with an 8” screen with navigation and all-round visibility (4 cameras). Unfortunately, integration with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Yandex.Auto systems is not currently provided. Of course, there are Bluetooth, USB and audio jacks, as well as a 12V outlet to power a variety of devices and equipment. The controls for dual-zone climate control (already standard) are located slightly lower.
The central tunnel, in addition to the leather-trimmed gear lever, has a pair of cup holders, a niche for wireless smartphone charging (an option for initial versions), and an electronic parking brake button. Large central armrest with leather trim.
The instrument panel with two analog gauges is easy to read, all thanks to the white backlight and optimal fonts. Between the speedometer and tachometer, depending on the version, there is a 4" or 7" high-resolution color screen. The most expensive version of Executive Safety has a head-up dashboard on the windshield.
The steering wheel with function buttons has been slightly smaller. Using the buttons on the steering wheel you can control the audio system, cruise control, and receive calls. For the Russian market, all versions, even the basic one, have a leather steering wheel. Almost all versions have mechanical tilt and reach adjustments; only the Executive Safety version has an electric drive. The heated steering wheel starts with the Elegance Safety version.
The front seats are soft, with a wide cushion and not the most pronounced lateral support. The range of adjustments is very high, even tall drivers will be able to sit comfortably, despite the fact that the seats themselves are installed lower. In the basic versions, the adjustments are mechanical, but starting from the Classic version, electric adjustment of the driver's seat in 8 directions and lumbar support adjustment for the driver are available. Depending on the version, the seats are available in fabric, dark or light leather. Heated front seats are already included in the base. Ventilation is available only for the richest configuration.
The rear sofa is also installed lower than its predecessor. There is enough room for the knees and above the head - after all, the base has increased by 5 cm. But there could be more space for the feet, especially if a tall person is sitting in front, who has lowered the chair to the lowest possible position. The central tunnel significantly steals space for the middle passenger. The back of the sofa is adjustable in tilt. There is a folding armrest with two cup holders, ventilation deflectors above the central tunnel and two sockets. In simple versions, the back of the sofa folds in a 40/60 ratio. The expensive Luxury Safety and Executive Safety versions offer two separate rear seats with electric backrest tilt. They fold in a 40/20/40 ratio. For these versions, the reclining armrest is equipped with a control unit with touch buttons for controlling 3-zone climate control, audio system, reclining and heating.
Noise insulation is good - the Camry is quiet at city speeds. As speed increases, noise from tires and wind appears in the area of the center pillar and side mirrors. The version with the 3.5 engine feels quieter, since the younger versions need to be “twisted” more often to high speeds.
The “Winter Pack” includes the following functions:

- electric heating of the windshield in the rest zone of the windshield wipers;

Interior
The car's interior has also been updated with new design solutions. A real cockpit is organized around the driver, and there is maximum free space for the front passenger. The information screen in the instrument panel is 7 inches diagonally, the head-up display is 10 inches, and the central display is 8 inches.
The main innovation in the cabin is the new Toyota Entune 3.0 multimedia system. Toyota Camry 2021 will be the first model to receive this system. At its core, it will resemble the system of the new Lexus, that is, the driver will have navigation and a number of Toyota-approved applications at his disposal.
The main advantage of the new system is the ability to link it to a mobile phone. Thanks to this, you can use your mobile phone to start and warm up your car on a frosty morning without leaving your home. Or open the doors, check the fuel level, close all windows and doors, including the sunroof. By looking at the screen of a mobile phone, the car owner knows when to go for maintenance and whether there are any faults. There is also the possibility of finding out exactly where the car is parked, which can be useful if you are parking near a supermarket. If your child has received a license and is learning to drive your car, then parents will have the opportunity to check whether he is exceeding the speed limit set for him, as well as other information necessary for parental peace of mind.
