Let's start with the fact that there is grace in the salon. Slamming the almost weightless door, I appreciate the new standards of Japanese comfort - before it was somehow different in previous Camrys. Now there is more of a smell of the concept of “premium”, and it’s nice to be in the “magpie” and touch everything. You have to look at wood substitutes for a very long time to understand that this is a print on plastic - it is faked with high quality, the leather is very soft, and plastic is an order of magnitude better. True, the door handrails are too wide to grip. And even for my hand, not to mention a woman’s. Otherwise, the driving position and ergonomics deserve praise. In addition, the Camry simply pampers you with comfort - excellent operation of the climate system, a light steering wheel and special thanks for the location of the automatic selector, which is right at hand - such prudence can not always be found in cars that claim to be called Sport, but here you are welcome.

The interior is a bit drab. And in a figurative sense too...

But the Camry doesn’t exude any drive even with a 3.5-liter engine. Yes, the V6 confidently accelerates the car (and even very much), but it does not splash emotions about this. And when cornering, the Camry behaves like an average Japanese sedan, with a characteristic (but not scary) roll and the need for slight steering. The seats, by the way, are also not designed for high speeds on an arc - and there seem to be pronounced bulges sticking out from below, but nevertheless nothing supports the upper torso. “Hold on tight to the steering wheel, driver!” — this is practically about Camry. But it’s enough to slow down, and everything falls into place: both controllability and comfort. Here, by the way, I’ll note that, despite the imposing characteristics of the suspension, the shock absorbers turned out to be a very sensitive element - even small joints of the test site were clearly transmitted by the suspension to the body and panels in the cabin. Panels in the cabin? Yes! They rattled distinctly somewhere behind. It’s hard for me to believe, but it’s true.

However, the more miles I put on it, the more the Camry appeals to me. Optitronic instrument panel with chic scales and fashionable “air” needles, the steering wheel is the exact size you need - both the diameter and the thickness of the rim. It was like they were tailoring me. What is there to complain about? Perhaps the turquoise inserts on the center console around the radio - they look, to be honest, somehow cheap, but how they glow when it gets dark! You can forgive a lot for this feature. By the way, versions with navigation lack such charm, and at night the interior is no longer so cheerful. But both versions of multimedia installations have problems worse than a purely visual flaw - there are frequent cases of complete failure, freezing and other other glitches.

And the car is also very quiet! This is more of a surprise than a standard - Asians have a tendency to save on sound insulation, but here, one might say, it’s a standard. In general, the Camry is completely fine with noise - we didn’t hear any wind whistling, tire howling, or the annoying roar of the V6 even under load. At first it seemed that we had some problems with our hearing - but no, we were mistaken. This is all right with the Camry. Neither high speeds nor the sounds accompanying speed are felt in the Camry. And the car holds a straight line perfectly and even solidly, you can feel it: it’s not an easy car. The 6-cylinder engine's six-speed automatic shifts through gears smoothly and slowly without any jolts. True, he doesn’t try to rush in the sports manual mode either. Having switched the gear up or down, it works with a second delay, but honestly - the engine can really slow down the movement, for example, in the mountains or on ice. Once I was lucky enough to drive a 5-speed automatic with a 2.4-liter engine for a day, and because of the thoughtfulness of the box, I felt some discomfort - the engine was turning, and the pause between shifts was much longer than with a 6-speed. I always had to keep my finger on the pulse, i.e. my foot on the gas, and constantly maintaining the engine I need (motor and gearbox) can allow me not to worry so much. If you need to dive through traffic from row to row, this is done at ease.

But the trunk is not the space for which the Camry can be valued. Firstly, a somewhat narrow luggage opening in some cases will make you nervous, and secondly, complex walls with an abundance of angles and narrowing in depth will not allow you to transport something that has the correct geometric shapes. And also the rear backrests of this model year do not have a folding mechanism, unlike the latest modernized versions. For long items, for example skis, there is only a hole in the interior.

Maybe the Camry's lack of distinct character helps anyone reconnect with it? Maybe. But the Camry certainly didn’t seem characterless. There is something elusive and secret about her. And at the same moment she is ready to let anyone drive - with a smile.

In addition to everything seen and tested, the Camry also has such qualities as reliability, which is not killed even by numerous recall campaigns from the factory due to serial defects.

An excellent choice for a businessman who counts money, values ​​time and respects comfort. I think that if there is a preference for “Europeans”, then even if you drive a Camry, you won’t have to regret it. Or maybe you’ll end up going back to it altogether—a good choice for a family car, too. We did not find a 3.5-liter version, but there are more popular cars in our area with 2.0- and 2.5-liter gasoline engines. We took a pre-restyling Camry in an inexpensive configuration and an almost top-end restyled copy with a 2.5-liter engine. If you don’t have the money for a 3.5, then you can take a new 2.5, and if you don’t have enough for that, welcome to Atlant-M Used Cars for a used car. After all, despite the engine size, this is still the same ultra-reliable Camry, which, according to legend, never sees a service station. We get into the car and go to film the video.

First, some background: Vadim has been driving a Toyota Camry 2.5 for a year now, and his father also has experience in operating such a car.

“By a happy coincidence, at the beginning of 2021 we managed to buy a new Camry,” says Vadim. – The car came to the Republic of Belarus at the old exchange rate, there was a significant jump – and the sedan fell in price in dollars. Plus there were good discounts when trading in an old car at Atlant-M Used Cars. As a result, a Toyota in an expensive configuration (2.5, leather, adaptive cruise) cost the same price as a base car! The car is almost a year old. Camry surprised me with its excellent suspension! The sedan rides smoothly even on a bad road, and the suspension handles deep holes well. Despite the phenomenal energy consumption, the rolls are quite confident, and the car stands very well when turning. Not all cars in a higher class have such a suspension. The build quality is not bad, but there are flaws in the little things. For example, a slight, incomprehensible sound periodically appears when the headlights are turned on, and the air ducts of the climate system whistle unpleasantly at high fan speeds.”

“My father has a 2021 Camry, and at 20,000 miles it started to experience a strong vibration when braking,” Vadim continues the story. – I had to change all the brake discs to sports ones. Overall, of course, we are very pleased with the car. I really like the adaptive cruise control, which is linked to the security systems. If something happens, the car will brake itself. It helped both me and my wife a couple of times. The 2.5-liter engine goes and goes, in the average cycle it consumes about 9 liters per 100 kilometers. Apart from the brake discs, my father did not have any special problems. Although there are small flaws, there will be no major problems with this machine; it is as reliable as before.”

However, let's return to our subjects. The most budget option to become the owner of a fresh Camry is to buy a slightly used one from Atlant-M Used Cars. The 2021 model is on sale there. with a 2-liter engine and automatic transmission for 58,930 rubles, or $23,000. The mileage is only 50,000 km; in the case of the Camry, we can consider that the car has been run-in. At the same time, there is no loss in value; you get an almost new car. The equipment is simple, but it has everything for a comfortable ride.

A new car, of course, is a new car. For 92,628 rubles, or $36,000, you can become the owner of a Camry in the pre-maximum “Luxury Safety” configuration with a 2.5-liter engine. And it has already been updated, it has just appeared in our country. The 2-liter and 2.5-liter engines have undergone a major update, making them more powerful and more economical. The two-liter version now has a variator instead of an automatic transmission, but with a “manual” first gear. The 2.5-liter engine still comes with an automatic transmission, but with an 8-speed one. But the 3.5-liter has not undergone any changes. But such a car costs from 103,752 rubles, or $40,000, without options.

What else has changed? Externally, the restyled Camry can be distinguished by a new front bumper and new air intakes. Inside there is a new multimedia system display and a modified center console architecture. These changes cannot be called revolutionary, but the car has become better.

However, let's return to the car from Atlant-M Used Cars. This car still cannot be called “budget”, although instead of leather there is a regular fabric interior. But there is a completely modern multimedia screen, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and heated seats. With Japanese design, everything is strict and concise, but quite modern. The finishing materials are not bad, although the seat upholstery seems inexpensive. And the door closing buttons, like the air deflectors for the rear passengers, evoke nostalgia for the 1990s. The Japanese are very conservative, there's nothing you can do about it.

Everything is in order with ergonomics and fit, although adjustments in this version are done in the old fashioned way - with handles. But there is a large and comfortable armrest with handles.

The rear is spacious, but the high central tunnel suggests that the average passenger is unlikely to be comfortable here. The armrest is not fixed, but has cup holders. There are USB ports and those same “nostalgic” air deflectors.

The trunk is quite large, 493 liters, but at the same time it has a funny hump on the floor. It's all about the full-size spare wheel. There will be no hump in the configurations with the “re-roll” version. But you can travel far and not be afraid that you will have to look for a tire service. I put on the spare tire and drove on.

How does the two-liter version with an automatic transmission drive? Let's put it this way: comfortable, but leisurely. The two-liter engine develops 150 “horses” and accelerates the one and a half ton car to “hundreds” in a long 11 seconds. This is a bit much for a business sedan... From the standard two-liter Agaz, you can safely overtake. But the consumption is relatively low: 5.5 liters per 100 km on the highway, 7.1 in the combined cycle, 9.7 in the city. That same legendary Camry 3.5 in the city only according to its passport consumes 12.5 liters per “hundred”. And if you also install an “Arab chip”...

But what comfort! The cabin is quiet and soft, just lulls you to sleep. Camry! At the same time, the energy intensity is truly impressive. “Missed” the “recumbent”, the car almost jumped, but the suspension did not break through. Excellent for our roads. The clearance is not the highest, but not the lowest either - 155 millimeters.

And besides the dust under the hood, you can’t tell that the car has traveled 50,000 km. It feels like it's new. There are no scratches or creaks in the interior, everything is very neat. They know how to do it!

And now we are transferring to a new Camry in a more expensive configuration. Yes, there is no smell of “budget” solutions here!

For starters, the trunk. There is no longer a hump here, a decent rubber mat, and also with an anti-slip coating in one place. But the back row no longer folds out; instead, there is a ski hatch. The “spare wheel” is no longer a full-fledged one, but a “replacement wheel”. But the volume has now been increased to 524 liters.

But in the back row there is already serious business class! In the armrest there is a block with touch buttons for adjusting the sofa, controlling climate control and heating. There's also a cup holder here. The armrest is also not fixed, it lies on the sofa - old school. Very spacious, comfortable, rich. And there are curtains both on the windows in the doors and on the rear window. The rear window is also controlled from the same remote control in the armrest. Class!

True, greetings from the 1990s in the form of archaic deflectors and a high tunnel were never removed...

In front, no global changes have been noticed, except for the large screen of the multimedia system. But this trim level has a lot that the black Camry doesn't.

Wireless phone charging, ventilated leather seats, Wi-Fi distribution unit. It is not supported in our country, but in other regions dealers also provide free Internet along with the car.

Not only the very convenient and comfortable seats are electrically adjustable, but also the steering wheel, and within a decent range. There are many buttons to the left of the steering wheel: heated windshield and steering wheel, automatic high beams. There is only one plug, for what it is a mystery.

But the main thing is that the cruise control here is no longer simple, but adaptive. There is a system for recognizing road signs and keeping in the lane. If earlier it simply gave a signal when crossing the marking line, now it itself keeps the car in the lane. True, hand on heart, the lane keeping systems of the same VAG or Tesla autopilots do this much more confidently and clearly. But for conservative Japanese it is still progress.

The Connected mobile service for the “Luxury Safety” package has been added to the useful features. It allows you to monitor the condition of the car via a smartphone, and in the event of an accident, it will notify the owner about the incident. The Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety systems has been expanded with new features: emergency steering assist, cornering reduction when adaptive cruise control is activated, intersection turn assist and lane center assist. Camry has become much smarter.

What's on the go? We change from the 2-liter version to the restyled 2.5-liter - and immediately notice the difference in dynamics. The car drives much more confidently! Power – as much as 200 hp. and 243 Nm of torque. Acceleration was reduced to 8.7 seconds to “hundreds”. But the engine is still naturally aspirated, and everyone is already accustomed to turbo engines and their crazy “pickup” even at lower volumes. Therefore, you still expect more from 2.5. The result is calm but confident acceleration with maximum impact in the high rev range. Yes, the 2.5-liter restyled version is faster than the 181-horsepower predecessor, but the Camry did not become a rocket with this unit. Therefore, if you are a racer, you need to take the 249-horsepower (subject to Russian taxes) “three and five” and an Arabic chip to boot. Camry is still a car for calm drivers.

In terms of the chassis, apart from changing the size of the wheels, nothing major has happened: it is still the same comfortable and soft car with quite decent handling. Previously, the Camry could only drive in a straight line, the ninth generation was “pumped up” in this regard, and now it’s pleasant to drive. It also seemed that it became a little quieter. Otherwise, if you don’t look at the more powerful engine and richer equipment in the white car, you don’t feel much difference. Camry and in Africa Camry.

What conclusion will the owner of the same Camry, but pre-restyling, draw?

“The new Camry is good, it has been improved perfectly,” says Vadim. – It handles just as well, rides smoothly, softly, and is energy-intensive. Sails like a cruise ship! The new engine has become louder, but pleases with good power of 200 horsepower. The 8-speed automatic is configured differently than the “pre-reform” 6-speed; in quiet mode, the shifts are not felt. But if you drive quickly, the car constantly changes gears, up and down. I can’t say it’s uncomfortable, rather unusual. In general, the restyled Camry feels more dynamic than the pre-restyling one. These 20 “horses” were not enough for the old engine. The assistants work well. Now the car confidently holds the lane, and not as before, when the assistant only returned the car to the lane and squeaked nervously. My wife uses this option, but I don’t, it’s annoying. In the new Camry you can relax on the highway and trust the lane keeping system, which is very convenient. Adaptive cruise control worked well before; nothing has changed in the updated Toyota. A cool collision protection system has appeared when reversing.

Inside, the main change is the display, which can “mirror” a smartphone using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But outwardly the decision is controversial. And the air ducts have moved under the display; they cannot be blocked. This is a minus, since air will constantly flow either onto your hands or onto your face. In the summer, with air conditioning, you don't want to blow air in your face.

Summing up the Camry, I can say that the updates have really improved, without spoiling the already good business sedan. But if you choose between a pre-restyling with low mileage and a new car, you need to think very hard. Since a Camry with low mileage is significantly cheaper in price than a new one. Yes, new engines with gearboxes, but the difference in price will be noticeable - 8-10 thousand dollars in similar configurations! And the pre-restyling Camry is already good.”

Camry is all about reliability and comfort. Of course, there are some conservative aspects in it, but many people like it. For example, simple atmospheric engines and classic automatic transmissions, except, of course, the version with a CVT. And even in order to increase the reliability of the design, the first gear is gear-based. A high-quality car for respectable people who value durability and a high level of comfort, and not throwing checkers in the city from lane to lane.

No global changes in the feel of the car were noticed during the restyling. This means that it is quite possible to consider slightly used options, on which you save due to the already lost initial cost. But here, of course, everyone decides for themselves.

Both engines have one feature - their timing drive is carried out by a chain, not a belt. The entire range of engines is very reliable. If all maintenance periods are observed, they can last more than 400 thousand km before overhaul. The problems encountered are somehow related to the use of low-quality fuel. Especially often, the injection system of cars imported from the USA suffers because of our gasoline. According to the regulations, spark plugs with iridium coating should last 100 thousand km, but on our fuel they rarely last half of this mileage. And you shouldn’t skimp on spark plugs - operation with faulty spark plugs can lead to failure of the ignition module.

The automatic transmission on models with a “four” has 5 steps, and on cars with a V-shaped “six” - six. Both gearboxes are reliable, especially the 5-speed. A number of owners complained about the failure of the 6-speed automatic transmission, but this was mainly due to overload of the unit during aggressive driving. In general, with timely oil changes (every 40 thousand km), the transmission lasts no less than the engine.

The Toyota Camry suspension has an enviable strength. Cars that have traveled more than 100 thousand km on CIS roads do not require serious chassis repairs. Only such little things as stabilizer struts with their bushings will need to be changed at intervals of 40-50 thousand km. Closer to the mileage of 150 thousand km, it may be necessary to replace the shock absorbers.

The weak point in the chassis is the steering rack. Although rare, you can find a Camry with worn-out plastic steering rack bushings, which manifests itself in a knocking sound when driving over bumps.

The shiny leather of the seat upholstery, as well as the gearbox handles of a business sedan, will lose their attractiveness only after 70 thousand km have been traveled. At the same time, the air conditioner evaporator will oxidize, and it will begin to “spit dandruff.”

How much would a 10 km/h impact cost?

The American Institute IIHS also has a methodology for conducting a low-speed crash test and assessing damage in such a minor accident. The 2007 Toyota Camry, one might say, turned out to be a record holder in its class - the cost of damage did not exceed $936 (by American standards, of course). The large front bumper successfully absorbed the impact, preventing damage to the hood, and then straightened back out. Apart from the radiator grille, nothing was damaged on the car. A similar car in the Volkswagen Passat class with an identical impact will literally ruin you by $4,395.

Chassis

The energy-intensive and extremely durable suspension of the 6th generation Toyota Camry successfully dampens road bumps, creating a floating feeling. The absence of extraneous noise in the cabin increases the feeling of comfort. The informative brakes seem too sluggish at first, which is almost immediately refuted by practice.

The emergency brake booster, which is equipped with the modification, makes the car freeze in place if necessary.

Despite its slightly smeared position, the steering of the Toyota Camry VI ensures strict adherence to the intended trajectory. Easy and problem-free parking in extreme situations is ensured by a small turning radius. The car is equipped with directional stability, an energy-absorbing body frame and other safety features.

Safety

Interestingly, Camry is not officially presented in Europe, and if so, the car has not passed the tests of the widespread EuroNCAP series. But it was beaten in the USA, the car is still produced there, and North America is the main sales market. According to IIHS (Insurance Institute For Highway Safety) tests, the car showed a good (highest) level of safety in both frontal and side impacts.

Just the exterior and interior? Somehow not enough...

Not only. The main change is hidden inside - a new engine and a new automatic transmission. Under the hood of mass-produced versions of the Toyota Camry, a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine is still installed. But if in the past this was the 2AR-FE engine (181 hp), now the A25A-FKS power unit (207 hp) from the Dynamic Force series is used.

This engine features D-4S double injection and multi-point injector nozzles for uniform fuel atomization, variable valve timing (intake/exhaust), a variable displacement oil pump, a high compression ratio (13:1), and the ability to operate on the Atkinson/Miller cycle. All this made it possible to achieve a very high efficiency (about 40%), which reflects the efficiency of the engine: less fuel consumption with more power. Paired with the new engine is now not a 6-speed, but an 8-speed Direct Shift 8AT gearbox: more compact than the previous 6-speed automatic, with an extended gear ratio and reduced losses.

Well, in order to close the issue with technical changes, I will note: for the updated version of the Toyota Camry 2021, the functionality of the TSS (Toyota Safety Sense) complex has been expanded. Thus, a function has been added not only to keep within the lane, but also to align in the center of its lane (LTA). In addition, the 2021 Toyota Camry sedan can now monitor oncoming cars at an intersection, etc. Finally, the gasoline versions of the Toyota Camry offer wireless charging and monitoring of blind spots of rear-view mirrors. At the start of the model, this equipment was not present, then it appeared, but only on the hybrid. And now I find these useful “little things” on an updated car.

The main changes are the engine and the automatic transmission. Depending on the country of sale, the Dynamic Force series engine and 8-speed automatic transmission have already been found in the arsenal of the current generation Toyota Camry. But for the Ukrainian versions of the Toyota Camry, this technology is new. The TNGA architecture and the GA-K platform are already familiar: independent suspension on all wheels, transverse engine installation, front-wheel drive (for most countries, including Ukraine).
