The VIN number can tell you a lot of information about a car. The combination of numbers is assigned to each car at the factory and is a reliable way to check the "history" of the vehicle. You can find the number on different elements of the car. If a person wants to find out the data, he should use a special service. Below are answers to all questions related to the VIN number.
What does a VIN number consist of?
Interestingly, it is forbidden to use symbols similar to numbers in the room. So, the owner of the car will not encounter the letters Q, O, I. Seventeen characters are deciphered as follows:
- First . Code of the country in which the vehicle was manufactured. The Vin number on the Land Cruiser Prado 150 SUV usually starts with J. This means that the country of origin is Japan.
- Second and third . They talk about the make of the car. The Prado 150 should have the letters TE. This means that it was produced by Toyota.
- From the fourth to the eighth . These symbols contain information about the model, body type, specification, transmission, engine.
- Ninth control . There are international encryption principles when creating VIN numbers for all cars, including the Prado 150. This symbol is selected taking into account the entire VIN number and helps protect car enthusiasts from counterfeits.
- Tenth character . He is responsible for indicating the year of manufacture of the car.
- Eleventh . Designed to encrypt the assembly plant from which the vehicle rolled off the assembly line.
- From the twelfth to the seventeenth . Serial number of the vehicle produced. Individual for each car.
The main parts of a single VIN code
RNTS consists of 17 characters. These can be Greek numbers and Latin letters. Except for I, O, Q, which are excluded to avoid coincidences with 1, 0. Using these signs, information is encrypted with a code. It consists of 3 parts:
1. The first part is called the worldwide manufacturer identifier. Consists of 3 initial characters. The first of them indicates the geographical area in which the product was produced, the second encrypts the country, and the third character indicates the specific manufacturer. Sometimes the third position contains information about the type of vehicle or may be 9, in the case where the company produces a limited number of cars, up to 500;
2. The second part is a description of the characteristics of the car. Here the manufacturer can post information about the body type, units, factory-installed options and much other useful information. But each automaker maintains its own consistency and places information that it considers necessary. It is located from the 4th to the 9th character:
- The characteristic itself is encrypted in the segment from the 4th to the 8th character;
- The check number occupies the 9th position in the code;
3. The third part contains identification data about the transport. They are encrypted from the 10th to the 17th character:
- The model year (everyone's model year starts differently) is located on the 10th;
- The code of the car manufacturing company is encrypted under the 11th character;
- The serial number fits into the final six characters of the VIN code. If a manufacturer produces less than 500 cars, then its identifier is encrypted with 3 characters in 12-14, and the remaining 3 characters in 15-17 places of the identifier indicate the vehicle serial number.
This decoding approximately reflects what the VIN code may contain. After all, every manufacturer has the right to make any amendments to the car numbering, the main thing is that the idea is preserved and the required verification number is obtained.

How to check the number?
It is worth checking the VIN number on a Prado 150 vehicle for several reasons:
- Find out whether a vehicle is stolen or not? If a car became the target of a crime, its parameters were entered into special databases.
- Find out how many owners the car has had. When purchasing, this point cannot be ignored. The number of previous owners indicates the degree of wear and defects of the vehicle.
- Make it easier to find parts using special services. This will help you find the necessary spare parts and not make a mistake with your choice.
- Find out about accidents and insurance claims. This aspect will help determine the reliability and degree of maintainability of the car. If the car has been in an accident, then its breakdown will not come as a surprise.
- Find information about whether the vehicle was in a taxi and whether it belonged to a taxi company.
- Understand whether there is a loan for the car or whether it is taken as collateral. Some owners who did not check the car by VIN number have already had such ugly details come to light.
Important! When checking, you should use trusted licensing sites.
Where is the VIN code on a VAZ, Lada, Toyota, etc.?
The location of the VIN code is different for each vehicle. So that the owner knows where to look for this number in his car, he should read the owner's manual. Most modern cars have plates to verify the identification number. They are located in easily accessible places:
- Under the windshield at the bottom there is a special window with RNTS. You can see it only from outside the car in the lower left corner of the windshield under the wiper;
- A sign containing detailed information about the car is installed in a visible place under the hood. It can indicate all the vehicle numbers, the curb and gross weight of the vehicle, as well as the weight distribution along the axles;
- In the doorway next to the driver's seat.
It is necessary to pay attention to the condition of the signs and fasteners. Scratches, loose fit to the body, various deformations serve as a signal for a thorough check of the car's serial number.
But for a thorough check, you will need numbers stamped directly on the car body. They need to be inspected as a whole, because there are still vehicles made from several. Such structures threaten, first of all, your safety.
Therefore, automakers try to place identification cards on solid areas of one-piece structures, from which it is impossible to discreetly cut out a piece of metal without violating the integrity of the structure. Getting close to the secret code to look at it carefully is also inconvenient. They are usually found:
- Above the front of the cylinder block. It can be covered with a sealing rubber band;
- on the partition between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment;
- under the front passenger seat. You need to move the chair all the way back, and then you will notice a small pocket in the bottom trim. When you bend it, you will see a number stamped on the bottom;
- in the trunk under the spare wheel. You will need to pull out the spare tire to see the VIN.
When purchasing a machine, you should carefully check and check the identification numbers. They should not show any signs of mechanical impact. You can check the VIN code and, accordingly, the vehicle in Russia online through the official traffic police database, which is available to everyone starting this year. Checking using the Internet eliminates the possibility of purchasing a car that has been stolen.
Where can I check the VIN number?
Services are ready to provide their services free of charge to check this information about the car. There are a large number of sites, but the following stand out among them:
- traffic police website. Traffic accidents, thefts, arrests, taxi companies - all this can be found out if you “punch” the number in the database. The Internet resource is regularly updated, and the latest information on new cars comes here first;
- website for collateral and loans. On such pages you can check information about whether the vehicle has been pledged or whether a loan has been taken out for it;
- various websites of courts and notaries. They will help you understand the legal history of the car and check its “legality”;
- page of the Russian Union of Auto Insurers. This community is designed to help you understand the insurance history of a car, with the help of which you can clarify the number of its owners and learn about its “taxi” past.
Attention! VIN verification is required if you are purchasing a car that has already had an owner. Do not forget that this number may contain hidden information that will spoil the purchase experience.

Fake VIN numbers: how to recognize them
A “spoiled” car combination greatly affects the price of the car. Buyers will not buy a vehicle that has been in an accident several times or has had a large number of owners. Such numbers may not be recognized by verification sites or may confuse the buyer. You can find out a fake VIN number on a Land Cruiser Prado SUV using the following parameters:
- Traces of paint and poor-quality painting of the code. In this way, scammers get rid of “unnecessary” characters in the number.
- The thickness of the paint layer is uneven at the location of the code. This suggests that certain symbols were covered.
- Sandpaper work is visible and there is corrosion. By erasing some part of the symbol, you can, for example, change the eight to a zero.
- Different font or “handwriting”. This indicates a clear interference in the zone of 17 letters or numbers.
- There are mechanical damages. This characteristic may indicate interference with the license plate, but it may also be due to the operation of the car. It's worth being more careful.
Examples of VIN code components
But following this diagram and armed with country codes, you can determine where the car was made. For example, consider the initial characters of the VIN code of Russian cars:
- Lada starts with XTA;
- KAMAZ trucks with XTC;
- Gazelles, Volgas, LAWS with X78, X96, XTH.
As you can see, for cars produced in Russia, the code begins with X. And for German cars, the initial letter W is common.
The part of the symbols describing the characteristics of the car is usually the most incomprehensible. Because each manufacturer decides for himself what information should be reflected in the code and what not. Therefore, trying to decipher what is written there is very problematic, but it is possible if you use special literature or software from the manufacturer. For example, consider cars from TOYOTA. The Japanese use the 4th and 5th characters in the VIN code to indicate the vehicle body type:
- 11 (12) – jeep (minivan);
- 21, 22, 23 – minibus;
- 52, 54 – hatchback 3-door and 5-door;
- 31, 32, 33 – a vehicle with a cargo platform and a two-door, one-and-a-half, twin double cabin;
- 41,42,43 – bus;
- 53 – sedan;
- 63, 64 – coupe, liftback;
- 72 – station wagon.
Now, having skipped the jumble of numbers and letters that are understandable only to specialists with reference books and at the manufacturer, let’s turn to the simplest and most important sign for a car enthusiast. It is located in the 10th position in the identification number and indicates the year of manufacture. There is also a certain nuance here, since many automobile companies count the beginning of the year with the launch of a new or updated model; usually cars released in the fall are already marked with the next year of production.
Sometimes there is confusion with the year of manufacture, because the PTS indicates the year indicated in the accompanying documents, but according to the VIN code the car is younger. Therefore, transport sellers often use the term “model year”, which better reflects reality. Since there are many years, there are not enough symbols for all of them. Therefore, for now, cyclicity has been established and every 30 years the symbol of the model year is repeated.
So, a car produced in 1986 has the 10th letter G in its VIN code, and when buying a car now at a car dealership, it is advisable that it have the same letter indicating the model year. G will be followed by H - 2021, then J - 2021, because I and Q, O are excluded from the list of valid characters.
Thus, in alphabetical order, the symbols will indicate model years up to Y in 2030, and from 2031 there will be a 1. But it should be remembered that American companies use the 11th symbol to indicate the model year of the car being produced. And well-known Japanese companies such as Honda, Nissan, Mazda and Toyota encrypt the year of manufacture into the code for their own reasons. It is also impossible to determine the year of manufacture by VIN code for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. These companies use encrypted information only for their own purposes and try to protect it from external influence.
Possible nuances
Sometimes the engine number, chassis and VIN code are difficult to find. For this reason, it is important to carefully study current information, use a powerful flashlight, and be prepared for the need to clean the table from dirt and dust.
The search for tables indicating numbers is carried out according to similar principles. The location of number plates is often taken into account. For example, the body number is additionally indicated under the driver's mat, where there is a special pocket for moving away and further studying the information.
When carrying out registration procedures, checking the car at the traffic police, interaction with inspectors. Specialists should take into account the location of the Mazda 6 body number and VIN code to quickly find the necessary information. Often you need to drive onto a special overpass and remove the protection. For example, the table on the engine is located at the bottom on 2.0 and 2.5 liter MPV engines, and for a 2.3 liter unit it is under the car hood, behind the installed engine. Sometimes traffic police inspectors do not have the necessary experience in searching for license plates, so it takes more time to carry out the procedure and clarify issues.
Advice! The number table must be clean and free of corrosion for the readability of the numbers.
