Toyota Rav 4 2021 disk parameters

Toyota RAV4 wheels

Few people know, but the number “4” in the name of this Toyota model indicates its all-wheel drive.
The English abbreviation RAV means that the car is designed for outdoor activities. That is, the wheels in this car will definitely not be bored. Since the Toyota RAV4 is a fairly popular car, wheels for it are produced all over the world.

Non-standard sizes of Toyota RAV4 wheels

Changing disks to non-standard ones affects:

  1. Response of the steering part of the car.
  2. The quality of interaction between tires and road.
  3. Tire wear indicator.
  4. Noise properties.
  5. Fuel consumption.

The use of lightweight wheels made of aluminum or titanium alloy will improve vehicle control and fuel consumption. The dimensions of the tire and wheel are proportionally related. Wide tires are suitable for dry asphalt, but on wet roads the car will drift sideways.

Aluminum models are softer than steel ones; after a short period of time after installation, the fasteners will become noticeably weaker. It is recommended to tighten the settings with a wrench. It is important not to overdo it so as not to tear off the studs.

What wheels were installed on different bodies and configurations?

Toyota RAV4 modifications are divided into generations. Starting from 1994 to the present day, there are 5 generations:

Stamped, cast and forged wheels are available on all models. In the basic configuration, the Toyota RAV4 is equipped with durable stamped wheels at a fairly reasonable cost. In order to improve the appearance and performance, such discs can be replaced with other types.

Modifications

The first car was released back in 1994. Over 16 years on the market, the RAV 4 version has gone through 5 generations of production:

  1. For the first generation, only 16-inch wheel options are required.
  2. Since 2001, the second generation has been released, which requires the installation of 17-inch models. Also in 2005, new variations with 18-inch wheel units were added.
  3. For 3rd and 4th generation the maximum diameter is 18 inches.
  4. In 2021, the company released the fifth generation, which only requires wheels with a 19-inch radius.

For all generations, the following types of disks are used:

  1. Stamped - the most popular version, which is installed in the original version of the crossover. They are easy to restore after deformation and practically do not crack. This formation is made from high-strength steel. There is also a drawback - the high weight of the structure. The appearance is also not impressive, but they are additionally equipped with caps.
  2. Cast - made from an alloy of light metals by casting. Lighter than stamped versions. Cannot be restored after deformation or splitting. They look more attractive in appearance due to the production technology, which allows us to produce any shape to order. Thanks to thermally conductive materials, system cooling is increased. The cost is higher than the first type.
  3. Forged - lightweight and durable. Made of light alloy metals. If it hits a hole, it will not crack, but the energy from the impact will transfer to the car’s suspension. Unfortunately, the choice of configuration is limited by production technology.

The standard version of the RAV 4 is equipped with stamped wheels of increased strength. However, depending on the driver’s goals, the discs are changed to other options.

Decryption of disk parameters:

Explanation of tire parameters:

The bolt pattern (PCD) for all Toyota RAV4 models is the same and is 5x114.3 mm, that is, there are 5 holes located along a diameter of 114.3 mm. The center hole diameter (DIA) is 60.1 mm.

Parameters of standard nuts

In the basic configuration of the Toyota RAV4, studs with nuts are used as fasteners, but they can be replaced with bolts. In the metric measurement system, the diameter and thread pitch of this fastener are designated as M12x1.25.

Wheel bolts and nuts are not universal. You can use them when replacing a rim if all the parameters of the mounting holes of the old and new disk are the same, for example, if you are replacing one stamped disk with another. When replacing a die with a cast wheel, you will most likely need to use longer bolts or studs, since cast wheels are thicker than steel wheels.

In addition, when installing a new alloy wheel, you need to pay attention to the contours of the recesses in its holes. They must completely coincide with the supporting surface of the fastener. On bolts and nuts, the bearing surface is located just below the head. It comes in flat spherical and conical shapes. You can see exactly how the bolts and nuts should look in the photo.

When tightening nuts or bolts with an improper clamping surface, it may initially give the misleading impression that everything is screwed on tightly and securely. But after the first trips it will become noticeable that the seat in the hole of the cast disk begins to deform or crumble. This can irreparably damage the new disk, because it cannot be repaired.

What drives can be installed

The instruction manual describes all the parameters, both recommended for installing disks and acceptable replacement options. The correct selection of disks is impossible without following these recommendations and tolerances.

The use of standard wheel sets and compliance with operating rules meets all the requirements for safety and ease of use of the car. But if you want to go beyond the standard characteristics, change the dynamics or tune the RAV4, then it makes sense to equip it with a non-standard set of wheels.

Such a replacement will affect the following characteristics:

Titanium and aluminum wheels weigh less than their steel counterparts. This directly affects improved handling and reduced fuel consumption. The dimensional parameters of tires are interrelated with the parameters of the wheel used. Wide tires are good when driving on dry city asphalt. But in bad weather conditions or during the winter season, they are more susceptible to side skidding and hydroplaning.

The material of the discs, made of light alloys, is softer than steel. At the initial stage of operation, aluminum tends to compact at the fastening points when driving, as a result of which the tightening becomes loose. Therefore, after the first trips you should tighten the fastenings. It is very important to tighten all nuts tightly, but using excessive force is also unacceptable, as this may cause the studs to break. For this procedure, it is best to use a special torque wrench.

What tire sizes does the manufacturer recommend to install?

The manufacturer gives fairly clear recommendations regarding the tires to be installed. Information about the recommended standard sizes can be found on a special plate located on one of the door posts. For cars produced in 2021, the relevant dimensions are 215/70 with a rim diameter of 16 inches.

Recommendations differ depending on the year of manufacture of the vehicle:

  • 2000-2005 – 215/70 R16;
  • 2005-2010 – 235/60 R16;
  • 2010-2015 – 225/70 R17;
  • 2015-2018 – 235/65 R18.

Recommended dimensions may vary slightly depending not only on the year of manufacture, but also on the type of body and installed engine. If for some reason you cannot find a plate with recommended characteristics, you should contact a specialist. This way you can eliminate the possibility of installing unsuitable wheels.

It is important to understand the tire markings. The first three-digit number indicates the width of the tire. The second number is the tread height.

It is important to note: the dimension affects the controllability and stability of the vehicle on the road. It is advisable to avoid purchasing wheels whose parameters differ significantly from those recommended by the manufacturer.

Minimum and maximum possible parameters of non-standard disks

To avoid the use of adapters, it is better to use a disk with factory bolt pattern and center hole parameters. That is, PCD - 5x114.3 and DIA - 60.1 mm. The minimum rim diameter set by the manufacturer is 16 inches, the maximum is 19 inches. But, according to reviews from Toyota RAV4 owners, disc 20 can be installed without any problems. And even after this, it is clear that the wheel arch of the car allows us to continue experiments in the direction of increasing the diameter. It is only important to understand how the wheel will behave in off-road conditions.

The amplitude of the overhang indicator in the standard configuration of the Toyota RAV 4 ranges from 35-45 mm. The minimum width of a standard rim is 6 inches, the maximum is 7.5 inches. Increasing the rim width entails a decrease in the disc offset. To install wider wheels, you will have to use spacers to adjust the offset.

As a result of the replacement, the track width will increase. This means that the car will be more stable when cornering. But this also indicates that the load on the support bearings will increase.

When purchasing new discs, you need to insure yourself as much as possible against purchasing a counterfeit. Suspicious counterfeits may appear on sale under the guise of any well-known brand. It is better to make the purchase itself at official retail outlets, making sure that there is a quality certificate.

A conscientious manufacturer always labels its products, and although the label can also be faked, you still need to make sure it is there. If there is no such marking or the cost of wheels on a Toyota RAV4 is too low, then it is better to refrain from purchasing. It may well turn out that the fake will be delivered from Europe or Japan, and the good product will come from China. Therefore, you should not rely only on a well-known brand.

What is the tire pressure

It is important not to miss such an important point as tire pressure. The manufacturer sets the standard for the front and rear wheels - 2.3 bar. If there is a full load on all 4 wheels, it is necessary to inflate the wheels to 2.5 bar. But some drivers neglect these recommendations. The reasons may be different.

For example, many reduce the pressure to 2.2 bar or less. The purpose of such a solution is to make the car more passable in snow and swampy areas. But it is important to remember the consequences of such a decision:

  • on the sides the wheel will wear out much faster;
  • controllability deteriorates.

Uneven wear causes accidents. Since the work of special outlet channels used to transport water from under the wheels is deteriorating. As a result, the efficiency of the drainage system decreases. There is a high risk of hydroplaning. Some problems may arise when tires are inflated above the manufacturer's specified value:

  • the tire begins to wear out faster in the center;
  • High temperatures contribute to tire explosion.

Wear of the central part of the tire leads to poor contact between the wheel and the road surface. As a result, the braking distance increases. Particularly serious problems can arise on slippery roads. Such experiments are especially dangerous in the summer. If the front wheel bursts at high speed, this can lead to a serious accident.
