This happened with the new Camry, the design of which not everyone likes, and it will happen with the RAV4. And I am convinced that buyers of the fifth generation crossover will not be disappointed in their choice. They will receive a car that is completely worth the money invested in it. Moreover, the investment is made when purchasing, and not during operation, because Toyota makes truly reliable cars. And now they’re not boring either.

2021 Model Review

The 2021 Toyota Rav 4 was shown in New York in March of this year. Despite the fact that the crossover is selling like hot cakes, management is releasing a new generation of the bestseller that will go on sale in the spring of 2021.

If the current generation is positioned as an urban crossover, then with the release of the new generation, the management states that the crossover is intended for young and active families, whose time is spent not only in the city, but they can go out into nature, to the mountains, to the beach.

In appearance, it is noticeable that the crossover has become more courageous and respectable in appearance, a kind of compact Land Cruiser for the city. Square wheel arches, a wide grille, and square body lines hint at an off-road spirit. It is worth noting that the exterior also depends on the choice of modification; three of them were shown in New York; we will talk about them in more detail later.

Interior and equipment

The interior of the 2021 Toyota Rav 4 has changed completely, it has become more solid and of better quality, the driver's seat has become more pronounced and sporty. A large display has appeared between the instruments, and on the dashboard there is a display of the Etune 3.0 infotainment system, its dimensions depend on the configuration; there are 7 and 8 inch monitors.

American models will be equipped with a rear view camera, adaptive cruise control, electric handbrake, lane marking monitoring system, automatic braking system, by the way, all this will come as standard.

For an additional fee, it is possible to purchase seat ventilation, a panoramic roof, electric seats, a heated rear sofa, a premium JBL audio system and an electric trunk with sensors under the bumper to open the trunk with a wave of your foot.

Technical stuffing

Toyota Rav 4 2021 moved to the TNGA platform (the same platform as the new Toyota Corolla 2021), due to the platform, body rigidity increased by 57% compared to the previous body.

The suspension was inherited from the previous generation, it is MacPherson strut at the front and a multi-link chassis at the rear. The dimensions of the car have increased slightly, but have grown: the length has increased by 50 mm and is 4655 mm, the width has increased by 10 millimeters, respectively, it has become 1854 millimeters. The wheelbase has increased by 30 millimeters, to 2690 millimeters.

If we talk about the American market (the model was not presented for Russia, it is expected that it will be shown in the fall of 2021), then the engine range has not fundamentally changed. This is a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder naturally aspirated unit, which is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and develops a power of about 200 horsepower. We can assume that there will be a 2-liter engine from the previous generation.

Toyota Rav 4 2021 will not impress with cross-country ability like, for example, the new Toyota Fortuner body, but it will definitely please you on a country or winter road.

New generation RAV4 – what’s new in it

Official dealers have already started selling the vehicle, but some car enthusiasts still do not understand what new the Japanese company has added.

In addition to the new exterior and interior design, the vehicle received the following changes:

  • The car uses the TNGA platform, which has a low center of gravity when compared to the fourth generation. This made the vehicle more balanced and robust.
  • The fuel tank is now on the other side. The brand's engineers took this step to add stability in management. Previously, drivers complained that they felt like they were “on a stool.”
  • The trunk volume is now 580 liters, the maximum for the previous generation is 501 liters.
  • Rear passengers have more legroom due to the longer wheelbase. A total of 40 mm was added between the two rows of seats.
  • The company's engineers have improved the driver's position. Now the car enthusiast is located 15 mm lower. Toyota believes this increases visibility.

More noticeable changes that affected the vehicle body and its interior are worth considering separately.

Options

3 modifications of the 2019 Toyota Rav 4 were presented in New York:

• Adventure RAV 4; • Limited RAV 4; • XSE Hybrid RAV 4.

From the name of the first configuration it is clear that this is a version for the most active, and accordingly the exterior with pronounced off-road details. These include arch extensions, plastic wheel arches, a special wheel design and, of course, roof rails.

The second modification is Limited, it is positioned as a city model, and it was not for nothing that a girl sat in it at the presentation. The Limited comes with 19-inch wheels and no roof rails or fender flares. The third is the XSE Hybrid, the fattest modification of the 2021 Toyota Rav 4, it comes with many additional options and looks like a Lexus with a Toyota badge.

Drive

We didn’t get any other versions except hybrid ones in Spain. But we tested the dual-drive model in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions. Moreover, all-wheel drive was tested not just anywhere, but on dirt and clay paths in the mountains of Catalonia. Slippery, with frequent changes in height. The Toyota RAV4 will never see more. And in these conditions, the hybrid all-wheel drive behaved more than adequately. It, like in the previous generation, does not provide a physical connection between the axes. A separate electric motor transmits power to the rear wheels.


Trial mode will come in handy when off-road. It simulates differential locks by braking the wheels.

However, an important evolutionary point of the AWD-i system is that the distribution of traction between the axles can now reach up to 20:80 in favor of the rear. Several times during the test, when the front wheels began to spin helplessly in the muddy mud, the electronics reacted quickly and made maximum use of the rear electric motor. This was clearly communicated by graphics on the instrument panel. And of course, increasing the power of the hybrid power plant from 197 to 222 “horses” also plays a certain role in the efficiency of the system. And this despite the fact that some elements of the hybrid (traction battery, electronics unit) lost weight when moving to a new platform.


The Japanese modified the power plants, slightly increasing their efficiency. It is important to know that the output of the hybrid system of single-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions is different - 218 versus 222 hp.

Another assistant on slippery off-road conditions is the Trail Mode system. This is a kind of simulator of differential locking by braking the wheels, adjusting the fuel supply and transmission operation. The non-hybrid all-wheel drive RAV4 uses separate clutches on each rear axle to redistribute torque between the wheels when supplied through the Dynamic Torque Vectoring system. But we’ll talk about this if (or when) such a car appears in the test park of the Ukrainian Toyota representative office.

On the asphalt, the hybrid all-wheel drive RAV4 also performed well, and, to be honest, I didn’t really want to switch to the front-wheel drive version later. It also has 4 hp. weaker, and it does not have an AWD Integrated Management system. Although the ability to select driving modes (Normal, Eco and Sport) is also present here - the behavioral character of the car can be changed.

A little later it became clear that common genetic features are inherent in any version of the RAV4. It has a comfortable suspension that gently handles bumps, a surprisingly informative steering wheel, decent noise insulation and excellent visibility. Yes, you need to adapt to the variator so that it does not annoy you by freezing at high speeds, and you should not expect hurricane dynamics from the RAV4 (due to the fault of the same variator), but rest assured that the smooth ride and comfort will bring you pleasure. This car has become much more pleasant to drive - the desire to get away from boring cars is beginning to bring tangible results to Toyota.

Analysts note that now the RAV4 is the class of crossover that can overcome off-road conditions without any technical problems.

One of the reasons why this became possible is the selector for selecting road surfaces.

It is enough to switch it to the “rocks and mud” position for the vehicle to confidently overcome such terrain.

The driver also has access to traction control on each wheel, which significantly reduces the number of problems when moving over small hills or holes. The operation of this function is also noticeable when turning on graders, when the outer wheel receives more torque.

Road conditions in Russia are not a problem for the new Raf 4. The driver has nothing to worry about if he sees potholes ahead that he previously avoided. You don’t have to worry about driving in areas where low-clearance vehicles might get stuck.
