Technical characteristics of Toyota Corolla 2009

3234 Apr 20

The Japanese automaker very quickly responded to some of the shortcomings of the tenth generation car released in 2006 and three years later restyled it, as a result of which it received the designation Toyota Corolla 2009 model series.

The first modification of the 10th generation Toyota Corolla of the 2007 model year, the technical characteristics and appearance of which fully met modern requirements, as can be seen in the photos presented on the Internet, immediately found increased demand among consumers in the C segment around the world. But the unsynchronized operation of the power unit with the robotic transmission began to cause a large number of complaints, which led to a quick restyling of the car. He mainly touched on technical equipment.

Technical equipment of power units and transmission

The 2009 restyling affected primarily the re-equipment of the car in the line of its power units and the robotic transmission articulated with them, after which the Toyota Corolla from the 2009 model range acquired the following technical characteristics:

  • 101-horsepower 1.3-liter gasoline engine, the maximum torque of which is 132 Nm at 3800 rpm;
  • petrol 124-horsepower with a volume of 1.6 liters and 157 Nm of maximum torque at 5200 rpm.

In conjunction with the engines, the manufacturer equipped the car with manual and automatic transmissions with six and four speed modes, respectively. The automatic transmission replaced the robotic transmission of the first modification of the tenth generation, which caused great criticism for its asynchronous operation and the rather early failure of some internal parts.

For the European market, the manufacturer has prepared an expanded line of engines, adding gasoline types to one 2.0-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 126 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. But, unfortunately, this modification was not supplied to the domestic market.

A new line of engines with a VVT-i gas distribution system and a modernized transmission gave the car improved dynamic characteristics, allowing it to accelerate to hundreds with a 1.6 liter engine. and manually in 10.4 seconds, and with an automatic transmission in 11.9 seconds. Fuel consumption in urban mode is 9.3 liters with automatic transmission and 9 liters with manual transmission, and in suburban mode these figures are 5.8 liters with manual transmission and 6 liters with automatic transmission.

The suspension and braking system remain the same, the front part is made on MacPherson struts with a transverse stabilizer bar and ventilated disc brakes, the rear part is made on springs with a transverse torsion beam and non-ventilated disc brakes.

Modern car brands

In this article we will look at how the 2009 Toyota Corolla behaves after 120 thousand kilometers that I drove until 2021. Toyota Corolla operated in a gentle manner, i.e. calm, balanced driving, without unnecessary throttle changes and turns.

We will also find out which parts had to be replaced on the Toyota Corolla with such a mileage, and what will need to be replaced in the future. I erased the number so that it wouldn’t get scorched, but I’ll show you everything else clearly.

Many people say that 120 thousand is not a mileage for a Toyota Corolla , but from my own experience I can say, no matter what the car, the mileage on our roads makes itself felt. And 120 thousand km. This is not a small mileage.

I didn't do anything to the body of the car. I don’t particularly like tuning, so the standard look is Toyota Corolla . I replaced the only original brake light bulb because it burned out.

If you sit down in the cabin, you can see that the car is in good condition. The finishing uses fairly high-quality plastic, which practically does not creak, even after the declared 120 thousand mileage. There was a nuance under the steering wheel, there was a plastic cover whose fastening had fallen off and it rattled a little. I sorted out this matter, and there are no squeaks anywhere else.

Regarding the operation of the Toyota Corolla engine at 120 thousand mileage, I can say that the engine starts perfectly. I like that the buttons on the steering wheel have not worn out over time. The final maintenance of the Toyota Corolla cost me 6,000 rubles.

Maintenance of Toyota Corolla was carried out at the end of 2014. Maintenance of the Toyota Corolla included an oil change with engine flushing, replacement of the oil filter, air filter, transmission oil, anti-friction additive, carbon cabin filter, filled with long-term antifreeze and replaced the front brake pads. Regarding the clutch, I found out that the price for a Toyota Corolla is not too bad - about 8 thousand rubles, this is for the original. And replacing a Toyota Corolla clutch from an official dealer will cost 35,000 rubles. I replaced the clutch on my car at 100,000 thousand. The engine runs perfectly and does not take oil.

On Toyota Corolla it is recommended to initialize the clutch every 20 thousand. For what? You ask. Because 3rd and 5th gears are engaged with a slight underpressure of the clutch (click). There were no comments on the electrical either. You can't hear the engine inside the cabin. Toyota Corolla is not expensive to maintain. The wheels are standard 16 inches. Tires for Toyota Corolla 12,000-13,000 thousand per set. The check never came on. I only fill up with 95 at Lukoil, at one gas station. I'm happy with the car.

Exterior and interior

The manufacturer's engineers did not make any noticeable changes to the design of the 2009 Toyota Corolla modification of the tenth generation, which is clearly visible in the photo. The corners of the front part of the car were only slightly smoothed, which made it possible to slightly improve the aerodynamics of the car; its coefficient became equal to 0.28 Cx.

The weight and size characteristics of the updated vehicle have not changed, namely:

  • 4540 mm – body length;
  • 1760 mm – car width;
  • 1470 mm – machine height;
  • The wheelbase is 2600 mm;
  • 1516 mm is the size of the front track;
  • 1512 mm – rear track size;
  • 1310 kg – weight of the equipped car.

The Corolla E150 is supplied to the domestic market with a ground clearance increased to 150 mm, which allowed the model to stand out from the cars of many competitors in the C segment.

The interior, as well as the materials used in its decoration, have not changed significantly. The manufacturer considered it unnecessary to modernize the interior and luggage compartment, the size of which retained 450 liters of free space. The front and rear row seats were left without lateral supports and additional adjustments.

The changes affected only the audio system, which the automaker significantly upgraded to provide the maximum configuration for the car, as can be seen in the photo of the center console. He added support for wireless connection via Bluetooth, support for the navigation system and placed functional joysticks for its control on the steering wheel, adding a mode for adjusting the column height and reach.

The new product has three standard configuration options, the first of which is Comfort, which can be expanded with additional options up to Comfort Plus. The second option is Elegance, which is also complemented by a various package of options up to Elegance Plus. And the last one is Prestige, which has the highest possible optional package, including a keyless start system and access to the interior.

The tenth generation of Toyota Corolla has become a symbol of simplicity and practicality. While other compact sedans are trying to present themselves to us in a completely new form, Toyota continues to develop the Corolla we already know. The right approach? Decide for yourself. The price of the basic configuration is $15,910, the price of the tested car is $21,659. Fuel consumption is estimated by the EPA to be 8.6-10.6 liters in the city cycle and 6.6-7.8 liters on the highway.

Toyota Corolla 2009 rear view

First glance: the same, but different.

Every automaker strives to stand out when it comes to compact car design. Take a look at the futuristic Honda Civic, angular Nissan Sentra, vulgar Ford Focus and sporty Mitsubishi Lancer. The only way to be truly original among all this variety of fresh exteriors is to stay the same. That's exactly what Toyota did with the 2009 Corolla.

At first glance, the old and new Corollas are very similar. Upon closer examination, we will, of course, notice differences, but they will not be significant. More expressive lines, new headlights, but nothing more.

It is unlikely that you will buy a Corolla to surprise your neighbors, to show your status. Rather, you will buy it because it is economical, reliable and practical.

The new Corolla is available in standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS trim levels . The S and XRS versions are distinguished by a sporty body kit and red nameplates. But it's not that simple. The XRS received a more powerful engine and sports suspension, while the S received just a body kit. Otherwise, it's a regular Corolla.

The driver's seat: focus on quality and safety

Inside there is a simple and functional instrument panel made of high quality materials. The air conditioning is controlled by three simple controls, and the audio system is integrated with the navigation system, meaning it can be easily controlled via the system's touchscreen. The navigation system has a memo function that allows you to set various reminders. It's very convenient, as is the dual glove box.

Toyota Corolla 2009, front seats

The front seats are quite comfortable, although some extra lateral support would be nice. In addition, they may be too small for tall people. In this case, adjusting the height should help. One of my criticisms about the previous Corolla, when I was either too far from the pedals or too close to the steering wheel, is no longer relevant. The steering wheel is adjustable both up and down and forward and back.

When it comes to safety, the Corolla has received significant improvements: ABS, front-seat airbags and curtain airbags are standard, while VSC is optional on all trims, including the XRS, and costs $250.

Toyota Corolla 2009, rear seats

The rear is also quite spacious, but the trunk is not very roomy. Of course, the rear seats fold flat, but the middle seat belt is a bit of a nuisance.

On the road: Good power, excellent economy, but an unexciting ride.

All Corollas including the XRS are equipped with a 132-horsepower 1.8-liter engine. The standard and S models are available with a 5-speed manual, while the LE and XLE come only with a 4-speed automatic. The latter option will be sluggish for the Scion Xa and Toyota Matrix, but for a compact sedan, which is our Corolla, it’s perfect. Some may not like the supposedly outdated 4-speed automatic, while the Honda Civic has a 5-speed, and the Sentra and Lancer generally have a CVT. However, the automatic in the Corolla works great, downshifting exactly when needed. As for consumption, I got about 7 liters per hundred, which is very good.

The Corolla is a comfortable car, although handling isn't its strong point. The Corolla is made in such a way that driving it is quite predictable, but at the same time, it does not bring much pleasure. Our test subject was equipped with an electronic stabilization system. It seemed to us that it works a little strangely on wet roads; it’s better not to rely on it on the track in wet weather.

End of the adventure: The Corolla is good, but not for me.

What I liked most about the new Corolla is that it is almost the same Camry, but more compact and economical.
In essence, this is a car for those who want a car of exactly this size, and not for those who simply do not have enough for a larger one. I was especially pleased that Toyota went ahead and equipped the XLE and XRS versions with leather seats, as did Honda in the Civic EX-L and Ford in the Focus SE/SES.
Will I buy a Corolla? No. Not because it's a bad car, but simply because I prefer my Nissan Sentra. But I will strongly recommend the new Corolla to other people, because... This is a comfortable, well-equipped, fairly powerful and economical car. It will not satisfy everyone, but I am sure it will find its admirers.

    What I liked:
  • Conservative design
  • Economical
  • Camry-class options in a more compact package
    What I didn't like:
  • Conservative design
  • Small trunk
  • Unexciting driving

Who will buy the new Corolla:

Anyone looking for an economical, comfortable and reliable car.

Who won't buy a new Corolla:

Those for whom a car is not just a means of transportation from point A to point B.
