Not long ago, hitherto unfamiliar “station wagons” called Toyota Succeed, very reminiscent of the Caldina and Fielder models, began to appear on the regional car market. And one such copy came to us for a test drive.
Recipe for success
The passenger-and-freight Toyota Caldina, beloved by Russians, in 2002 gave way to the Succeed model on the assembly line, which in English means to have success, to follow (something), to become a successor. And so it happened. And after 3 years, “station wagons” successfully entered the secondary market of our country, positioning themselves within 10 thousand dollars - depending on the version (front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, etc.).
The smooth contours of the 2-volume station wagon body, which does not pretend to be original, reveal good aerodynamics and manufacturability. The high-quality fit of the panels, stable gaps in detachable parts and the boundaries of the transition from plastic to metal do not cause any complaints from designers. White color is always in fashion. Yellow-orange lighting equipment complies with new Russian standards.
The absence of scratches, traces of body repairs, as well as a working air conditioner (cars that have been in an accident are usually left without freon) adds confidence in the good general condition of the car. Moderately convenient entry and exit, no need to slam doors. The steering column is height-adjustable, so the grippy 370-mm “donut” does not interfere with the knees and does not block the instrument panel. A minimal set of control instruments (no tachometer) and controls (pedals, levers and keys) for the average driver allows you to focus all your attention on the road. The visibility is excellent - provided that the external electric mirrors and seats are adjusted correctly (manually), as well as the correct operation of a pair of windshield wipers and windshield and rear window washers. The abundance of containers for various travel items is sometimes puzzling. The mounting of the retractable table was interesting: the tabletop rests on the automatic transmission lever. The electronic odometer display shows 98 thousand km. This is far from the limit, because we still have the same motor potential.

Guarantee of health
Under the hood is clean, as if the car had just come off the assembly line. The transversely located in-line “four” 1NZ-FE with the VVT-i phasing mechanism does not stand out in anything special - a modern engine for a class C passenger car. The optimal 1.5-liter displacement, and 105 hp. The power is quite enough to maintain proper dynamics and drive additional equipment (including air conditioning and servo steering). The inspection points of the power unit (engine and automatic transmission) are highlighted in bright colors, which makes it easier for an inexperienced driver to find them; also ergonomics. I was pleased with the perfectly clean and level luggage compartment with its volume and the possibility of freely placing long items (or sleeping equipment) with the rear sofa folded. The stern inscription package implies nothing more than the acceptance of packaged cargo. The low loading height and the raised 5th door that does not rest on your head are an additional plus to the overall ergonomics of the car. But removing a full-size spare tire from under the bottom of the body is not very convenient.

Safety equipment includes not only a full set of inertial belts, but also a pair of front airbags. In addition to this, there is a red remote flare device for the emergency search alarm above the front passenger's left foot.
Thoughts along the way
The car accelerates smoothly and relatively easily, obeying a 105-horsepower engine and a moderately thoughtful automatic transmission. V-Flex all-wheel drive has no center differential, and the viscous coupling sometimes throws torque to the rear axle alarmingly. Why is it that mono-drive driving skills, perfected to the point of automaticity, are not always beneficial; takes some getting used to. There were no hums in the transmission units, creaks in the cabin or knocks in the rigid suspension, as well as spontaneous deviations from the given trajectory. The steering wheel cannot be called “sharp”, but the characteristic “cotton” is not for it either. A 10m turn on a standard track can be confidently completed in one sitting. The ground clearance is comparable to domestic Lada cars. Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires on 14-inch alloy wheels are a good choice. The brakes (discs at the front, drums at the rear) and sensitive ABS clearly cope with their tasks.

Toyota Succeed is an excellent car not only for lovers of long journeys, but also a comfortable vehicle “for every day” for people who value time, comfort and reliability.

When, before the tests, someone said that we had never seen such a car before, to be honest, no one believed it. In appearance, the Toyota Succeed resembles the current Coroll station wagon. There are not many of them in the city yet, but I think that soon motorists will “try out” the new model. Succeed is another “budget” Japanese station wagon, and a very comfortable one at that. Everything in the cabin is simple, nothing superfluous: air conditioning and power accessories. Although the engine capacity is only 1.5 liters, the car is quite playful. Excellent handling even at high speeds; This is what you don’t expect from such a “station wagon”. A spacious trunk (allows you to transport large items), average fuel consumption of 8-10 liters per 100 km, modern design. A godsend for small entrepreneurs, for whom the car is apparently designed. The energy-intensive suspension absorbs even the largest potholes on the roads without annoying with unpleasant knocks. The ground clearance, although low, allows the chassis to pass well-worn ruts without harm; especially valuable in winter. Overall, I liked the Toyota Succeed. And the price is reasonable - about 10 thousand dollars for a 4-year-old car. Agree, it’s not that expensive. |

It happens like this: you saw a car and you liked it! Although you still don’t know its pros or cons. Toyota Succeed, born in 2002, has just appeared on the market, and on the streets of our city. And one must assume that it is intended for the Japanese domestic market: somehow it looks Japanese and for the Japanese. Kindly and economically. Nice – no pretense – design of a compact-looking “station wagon”. Once inside the cabin, you understand that “compact” is a relative concept: 5 adults can easily be accommodated here. High ceiling (although the front seats are not set low either), inexpensive but high-quality interior trim, height-adjustable steering column, electric side windows and rear-view mirrors, air conditioning; What else is needed for a good “businessman”? An interesting instrument panel: at the bottom of the large semicircle is a modest rectangle with information about mileage, fuel reserve and real time. Everything else is a large marking of the speed indicator (speedometer). Extra arrows do not loom before your eyes. Other information is displayed outside the semicircle. In general, the interior is spacious and comfortable for a station wagon. One small inconvenience is that the back of the rear seat can only be folded entirely. But if you put it “on the floor”, then the luggage compartment increases significantly, and not only a bag with sportswear fits there. Since the front seats are mounted high, visibility is better and getting in and out is more convenient. The power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering mechanism works easily and gives quite normal feedback. I didn’t expect that the Succeed has permanent all-wheel drive, although the basic version is front-wheel drive. It’s for the better that it’s full: it’s easier in winter on snowy roads; and go somewhere for a picnic outside the city. The 4-speed automatic transmission works smoothly with the torquey 1.5-liter engine, which quickly picks up speed, thereby giving the car very decent acceleration. At high speeds, the engine noise still reminds us of itself. I have confidence in this type of suspension: at the rear there is a continuous axle on trailing arms and springs. Owner comments and cost
If we summarize the reviews, we can understand that most of all people who own such a Toyota praise its dynamics, trunk volume, spacious interior, quality of the gearbox and comfort of the front seats. An obvious drawback is that the ground clearance is too low for Russian roads. But, since the car is not supplied to our country, this can be ignored. Controversial qualities include sound insulation and body design. Not for everybody, so to speak.
Now you can find this used model for sale, and in good condition. A 2012 car with a 1.5-liter engine without mileage in Russia will cost approximately 550,000 rubles. And this is with the maximum configuration. I must say, not a bad price for such a functional car.
Negative aspects of Toyota Succeed

- Body. The car's paintwork is weak and it quickly develops chips and scratches. Due to this, the car loses its “marketable” appearance after a short time. The design of the car is simple and unremarkable, so it loses to other, more stylish cars.
- Salon. Made from cheap materials. The seat upholstery is very worn. Plastic also deteriorates quickly, which causes extraneous sounds to appear in the cabin. In addition, the car has poor sound insulation. The rear seats resemble a wooden frame covered in fabric.
- Equipment. Primitive. There are only 2 airbags - for the driver and front passenger. There is no tachometer and climate control. The radio and audio system are weak.

The car is picky about the quality of fuel and lubricants; they must be tested, otherwise the installations may fail. The suspension is quite stiff. There are no fender liners under the rear arches. The engine and CVT made good first impressions during operation. The car is dynamic, the suspension is stiff, but in moderation. I did the rear window tinting myself, I didn’t like the factory one. I was pleased with the consumption: on the highway 5-6 liters per 100 km, in the city 7-8 (if you don’t use too much gas). There is a blocking mode from dirt, snow, etc. The ground clearance is normal, but the front bumper is low and sometimes catches the ground on uneven surfaces.

The car turned out to be not as bad as at first glance. I expected the worst. The trips are comfortable, we even managed to try longer distances (200 km), the car does not tire us out. The car is roomy, and when the rear seats are folded down, it becomes possible to transport a large refrigerator.
