Agree, we, the owners of this “Japanese”, have always wondered: “What kind of oil should I pour into the Toyota Corolla engine?” Indeed, today the market for oil products is so large that you are often lost in choosing a lubricant for your car. Moreover, the price for popular brands is much higher than for the average product segment.

The engine is the heart of your car, and in order for it to work for a long time and reliably, we will help you figure out which oil is best to use for Toyota Corolla. We’ll also tell you how to change the fluid yourself without the help of a car service.

  • Factors affecting engine wear

    Engine Toyota Corolla 2008

    Toyota Corolla is a car with a fast and good engine. Therefore, it is necessary to know the reasons that affect the service life of the lubricant, and regularly follow the replacement schedule in order for the motor to serve for many years. There are several dozen factors that negatively affect engine oil, which entails increased wear of the internal combustion engine. I would like to highlight the main ones:

    • The car has been idle for a long time or not used regularly. It would seem that the car has been standing for two months, what could happen to it? In fact, the system should be started at least once a week. In this case, it requires a special approach and attention. If the machine is used with significant interruptions, then the lubricant should be replaced more often than for one that drives every day.
    • Traveling short distances. The problem with engine wear is that if you often start the car and make short runs throughout the day (for example, from store to store), then it does not always have time to warm up. Accordingly, condensation (in simple words – acid) collects in the internal part, which corrodes and negatively affects its operation. This can also be attributed to problematic situations - traffic jams, when the car is moving in the “start-stop” mode, in this case the liquid overheats and gradually loses its beneficial properties.
    • Air pollution. It is this factor that, in our country, greatly influences wear and tear. Do you notice that the streets and roads are very dusty? And all this dust gets through the air filter, right into the very “heart”. In our area, it is best to use high-quality filters.
    • Vacuum lubricant replacement. As strange as it may sound, modern express oil changes are much worse than the traditional method. After vacuum “running”, part of the old waste fluid remains on the walls and at the bottom of the engine sump. This sediment negatively affects the further operation of the engine.

    The frequency of oil changes is up to you. A specific answer to the question: “How often to replace?” - No. The “mileage” of a lubricant is measured in kilometers (on average 8-10 thousand) or months (3-6 months). Each car owner has his own individual calculation of this interval.

    Which oil should you choose?

    For engines of the Toyota Corolla model range, only synthetic or mineral types of oils can be used. The use of semi-synthetic oils can lead to soot and scale in the engine. You won’t be able to get rid of it without a special liquid solution, Mobil 5 Envi5F10 (used as an additive to the lubricant). The most common and available types of oils:

    The engines of one of the most common Toyota Corolla 150 models (E150 sedan body) work perfectly with the following three synthetic oils of the following viscosity:

    The amount of lubricant required directly depends on the engine installed in your car:

    To choose the right lubricant suitable for your car model, you need to know the following three indicators:

    The best choice would be the following fuel and lubricant mixtures:

    They are universal and will fit cars even with a mileage of 180,000-200,000 kilometers. And the presence of cleaning additives in them will help improve the operation of your engine in case of malfunctions.

    Recommendations

    Of course, every car owner always tries to fill only high-quality lubricant. But not all parameters of the purchased product fit the recommendations of the car manufacturer. To simplify the selection of oil products for the engine, look in the service book. It is there that the type and type of oil, its viscosity and characteristics that are best suited to your car are indicated. The manufacturer sets the service interval uniquely for each model.

    Pay attention to the wear and tear on your car's engine. The recommendations of the Japanese manufacturer apply to “fresh” engines. Therefore, the oil indicated in the service book, for a car with a mileage of more than a hundred or three hundred thousand kilometers, will not be relevant. If the lubricant for the Toyota Corolla 2007 was 5w30 when purchased, then after almost ten years of using the car it should be more viscous, for example - 10w30. In Russia, the concept of semi-synthetics (made using hydrocracking technology) is popular for cars with “mileage”, just 10w and fits this category. Replacing with a more viscous substance will give the engine “strength” and reduce its wear. You can change the lubricant at home; it is not a difficult, but long-term process.

    Toyota has taken care of its cars by releasing a large series of motor oils with a wide range of viscosity and temperatures. At the same time, in the service book, about “engine care,” it is the oil from the Toyota manufacturer that is indicated. But you need to take into account the fact that these are just recommendations and nothing more. After all, you can choose a lubricant that will be suitable in terms of temperature, viscosity, characteristics, availability and price.

    Instructions for checking the oil level in a manual transmission.

    • Place the car on a level surface.
    • Unscrew the plug that covers the filler hole.

    • The oil should begin to flow out. This indicates that its level is normal.

    So, the moment has come when we enter the store and see a wide range of oil products. Guided by our knowledge, we conduct a small analysis of the condition and conditions under which our car is located. In doing so, we focus on the following factors:

    • When was the last time the fluid and filter were replaced?
    • year and mileage of the engine, average frequency of lubricant change interval,
    • internal factors (fuel quality, what kind of lubricant was filled in, etc.),
    • regional features (temperature regime).

    Each motor oil has a number of characteristics. It is worth highlighting two main properties of a lubricant: viscosity and temperature range. According to the SAE standard - a classifier of motor fluids, we select 5w - for mileage up to 200 thousand or 10w - over 200 thousand kilometers, in accordance with the specified factors. Then we select the appropriate temperature regime, 5w40 or 10w30/40 will be relevant.

    If the internal combustion engine was filled with semi-synthetics, then it is not worth changing to synthetics. The fact is that synthetic is intended for “fresh” engines; it has antioxidant and cleaning characteristics. Moreover, semi-synthetics can contain additives to seal cylinder walls, smooth out scratches, etc. If you make a change from semi-synthetic to synthetic, a “leakage” of all the additives that benefit the engine may occur, and this will end in a “fatal” outcome for the engine.

    Don't be afraid to make the switch from synthetic to semi-synthetic. Thanks to a large selection of additives, you can restore the engine to “better times”. Of course, to change to a more viscous oil, you need to flush all the engine channels. Over the years, the engine wears out, and semi-synthetics will always keep it in “shape”.

    Necessary components for work

    To replace the transmission, it is not oil that is used, but a special composition intended specifically for this unit. The container label for this liquid bears the designation ATF (automatic transmission fuid). This liquid is able to function under more difficult conditions, withstanding significant loads. When the gearbox is operating, the operating temperature of the parts reaches 300-400*C.

    The torque converter experiences heavy loads: when the car is moving, the temperature of the systems reaches 150*C.

    During long-term operation of the gearbox, volatile components evaporate from the solution used for lubrication and cooling, and the composition of the transmission fluid changes, which is unacceptable.

    The fluid poured into the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission performs a dual function:

    • heat removal from the box parts to the external environment;
    • lubrication of contacting parts.

    You can also change the engine fluid at a car service center, but it is best to stay with the car “one-on-one” and carry out this procedure yourself. The average lubricant replacement interval for continuous operation is 10,000 kilometers. For this we need:

    1. Ratchet wrench 14 and screwdriver,
    2. Oil filter puller,
    3. Container for liquid,
    4. Filter and synthetic or semi-synthetic lubricant.

    Of course, it is best to use Toyota dealer oil and filter.

    Sequential instruction:

    1. We drive the car onto an overpass, lift or pit. Remove the engine protection.
    2. After that, under the hood we unscrew the “filler cap” (funnel).
    3. Then open the drain plug.
    4. Drain the oil, approximate volume is about 4.0 liters.
    5. Now we need a filter remover (this is a special key, if you don’t have one, then try removing it with a screwdriver).
    6. We take out the cap and filter.
    7. Lubricate the sealing ring.
    8. Gradually pour oil into the central part of the filter, it should be absorbed and completely lubricate the inner walls.
    9. We install the cap and filter in their original position.
    10. Pour lubricant into the engine funnel (the ideal level on the dipstick is between min and max).
    11. At the end of the first trip, do not forget to check the oil level again; you may need to add a little.

    Toyota Corolla will forever remain your reliable and nimble car if you treat it with love. Look under the hood often and check the oil regularly. Replace only with a quality product. It is best to change the oil in the Toyota Corolla 2008 engine every 7-9 thousand kilometers or 3-5 months. With such an interval, your “horse” will never let you down!

    Step-by-step instruction

    Before changing the oil, you need to drive your car onto a lift or into a garage where there is a pit.

    1. The first step is to crawl under the car and remove the engine crankcase plugs using a screwdriver.
    2. Unscrew the drain cap with a wrench and place a previously prepared container for draining.
    3. You can smoke until the waste fluid is completely out of the engine. It is advisable to measure how much waste comes out of the engine (usually for 1.6 liter engines the volume is 4.2 liters).
    4. Unscrew the filter. In this case, first unscrew the filter protective cap. The cap is removed along with the protection, and then the filter itself is removed.

      If you cannot unscrew the cap by hand, you can use a chain wrench or any rag. But, in any case, it is necessary to protect the filter housing by wrapping it with rags. If a part is worn out, it should be replaced with a new part. But, if you are installing an old filter, then it should also be lubricated with oil.

    5. All work under the car has been completed. We put everything in place, close the protection and move upstairs.
    6. Open the hood and unscrew the filler cap to pour fresh lubricant inside.
    7. You need to fill in the lubricant as much as is left in the waste container.
    8. That's it - close the lid, the car is ready.

    Consequences of untimely replacement

    Aged oil has a negative effect on automatic transmission components. Moreover, each problem becomes the cause of another, more critical and requiring expensive repairs.

    Below is an approximate algorithm for complete failure of the gearbox in case of untimely replacement of transmission oil:

    • the first thing the owner will encounter is shocks and jerks when switching;
    • then the hydraulic accumulators in the box fail;
    • after this, burning and chipping of the friction clutches begins;
    • an increasing number of mechanical impurities completely clog the filter and it stops performing its functions;
    • Because of this, mechanical particles get into the bearings and valves of the valve body, which leads to emergency operating modes of the automatic transmission and complete immobilization of the vehicle.
