Error code P2416 – O₂ oxygen sensor connections reversed (Bank 1, Sensor 2 and Bank 1, Sensor 3)

Manufacturers of modern cars are constantly improving the software of the on-board computer and electronic systems in order to warn the driver about all problems as informatively as possible. Moreover, the notification concerns not only the wear of consumables, such as brake pads, filters, spark plugs, oil and others. The electronics also warns of more serious malfunctions, for example, problems with the engine or gearbox, displaying the corresponding symbols on the monitor. So, in the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 the 4lo light is flashing. Let's look at what this means below.

Technical description and explanation of error P2416

Trouble code P2416 means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that the wiring on the O₂ sensors has been replaced. The car's computer uses readings from the oxygen sensors to regulate the amount of fuel to be injected into the engine to operate most efficiently.

During normal operation, the O₂ sensor responds to changes in oxygen content in the exhaust stream. Depending on the type of sensor, it records changes in either signal voltage or electrical resistance. Which the PCM uses to keep the air-fuel ratio as close to the ideal 14.7:1 ratio as possible.

The PCM monitors the O₂ sensors to ensure proper engine operation. For example, if it commands to add more fuel to bank 2, but then sees that the oxygen sensor located on bank 1 is responding. It processes the information and correlates the data that it considers incorrect, then this code is run.

Trouble code P2416 is uncommon and only applies to vehicles with engines that have three oxygen sensors. If you have two oxygen sensors, you will not receive this code.

The error applies to O₂ oxygen sensors No. 2 and No. 3. The connections of which are mixed up with each other on Bank 1.

Possible causes of error 4lo

The “4lo” symbol on the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 dashboard lights up along with one of the following symbols:

  • check usc system;
  • check engine;
  • traction control disable icon;
  • ABS.

In the middle of the display, a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark also lights up, which symbolizes the presence of some error in the operation of the car.

Often the main cause of the 4lo error is low-quality fuel. First of all, this problem manifests itself at low ambient temperatures. As a result, the car produces reduced power, has difficulty picking up speed, and there is not enough traction to go faster than 30 km/h.

However, this is one of the easiest reasons that causes a situation where 4lo is flashing in the Land Cruiser 200. It will be enough to fill in high-quality fuel, which will clean the system. The light bulb can also come on for the following reasons:

  • transmission malfunction;
  • failure in the operating mode of the center differential lock controller;
  • violation of the integrity of electrical wiring;
  • fuel filter malfunction;
  • mechanical damage to components;
  • sensor malfunction.

This is not a complete list of the appearance of the symbol in question on the dashboard. It is very difficult to determine the exact cause of the problem while sitting in the car. Visually, such an error is also not striking. Therefore, it is possible to understand what happened only during computer diagnostics using suitable software.

Symptoms of malfunction

The main driver symptom of P2416 is the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) illumination. It is also called Check engine or simply “check light”.

They can also appear as:

  1. The “Check engine” warning light on the control panel will light up (the code will be stored in memory as a malfunction).
  2. Floating speed, as well as attempts to stall at idle.
  3. Fail-safe or emergency mode of operation.
  4. Reduced engine power.
  5. Increased fuel consumption.

The severity of this code is high. If you ignore this error, there is a high probability of catalyst failure. Which can ultimately cost a lot of money.

Secondary Air Injection System (SAI) Many have already encountered a malfunction of the secondary air system on Toyotas / Lexuses (errors P1441, P1442, P1444, P1445, P2440, P2441, P2442, P2443, P2444, P2445, P2446, P2447) and know that in addition to When the “check” is on, there is also an emergency mode, in which the control unit significantly limits engine power and operating the car becomes problematic. What is this system for?

To supply additional air to the catalyst and speed up its heating: as we know, the catalyst begins to function as expected only after sufficient warming up. This system works subject to a number of conditions: engine temperature 5 - 45 degrees, air temperature 5 and above, etc., all this is in the repair manuals.

Most often, the problem occurs with Tundra and Sequoia, which have pumps located under the right fender. In my practice, it also occurred on the Prado 150 and Lexus LX570.

Water in the pumps is the main cause of these malfunctions:

Which inevitably leads to valve failure.

If the car is under warranty, then there are no problems, everything will be replaced under warranty. If not, then the owner will be surprised to find out the prices for spare parts; judging by the indicated cost, space technologies and (or) precious metals are used in pumps and valves.

The contribution to the environment of this system, I think, is minimal, and even law-abiding Americans do not want to invest money in its repair, but are trying to bypass this system; on one of the forums they found a solution to deceive this system by replacing the readings of the air temperature sensor, but this solution does not work well not on all cars, most often the result will be a “check” and an error for the discrepancy between the air and engine temperatures after the car has been parked for seven hours (P0118). Also, their method does not eliminate errors P0412, P0415, P0418, P0419, P1613, P1614 due to electrical failure of pumps, valves and drivers.

Description of the malfunction in your own words

And so that you know how and how this malfunction(s) can be expressed, you can listen to the description of the problem:

“... On my '08 Tundra (3UR-FE) - 48500... a problem arose... first
the Check engine light came on constantly, and after starting to move, the illumination starts, including 4LO and slipping VRC off and 4LO blinks, and the engine does not pull, press to the floor, but the car does not drive - the service center said: “... the computer limits operation to 40%, the engine goes into emergency mode, the car does not go more than 75, by the way, all-wheel drive turns on normally in this state, but VSC does not work... The terminal and the computer reset can't be treated!!!!!!!! Tested with a computer, error DTC code P2440, P0418, P0419 P2441, P2442, P2443, P2445 P2447... these are all Air Induction Pump ERRORS, the error was removed, but it didn’t last long, then all these lights came on again... I’ll go change it on Monday... ... bulkhead and popandos in full: the official price is 26 thousand rubles per piece.
... Here one friend went through this and was treated by rebuilding two pumps, they are located under the fender liner above the fog light... he took them apart, cleaned all the parts - he had water in them..
But this is a collective farm for not long, if there is a check again - then there really is no option but to replace the valves right away" .
These errors and malfunctions can be called “systemic,” and it’s not for nothing that the company released a special service bulletin T-SB-0160-11 and others, for example:

There are solutions to this problem, and they are different, for example, you can do what our colleague did: “... dirt accumulates under the petals, hence the increase in temperature and plus condensation, which ultimately leads to a wedge of the actuator itself. I developed the actuator, I cut the petals from a construction spatula of similar thickness and flexibility... 100,000 are already in use.”

These errors are also reflected in the manuals:

... and another 14 pages of descriptions.

And if you have a lot of time and an ineradicable interest in automobile malfunctions, then you can try to check and possibly correct the errors according to the manual: 14 pages of descriptions of checks for these two errors, 14 pages of descriptions of checks for another error code, and so on.

We look carefully at the diagram:

Then we take Intelligent Tester and start checking:

However, keeping in mind that “I think the contribution to the environment of this system is minimal,” you can try another solution.

Another solution to this problem

As I already said: “...even law-abiding Americans do not want to invest money in its repair, but are trying to bypass this system.”

Therefore, “at the request of the workers,” an emulator on a microcontroller was developed and manufactured (so far unparalleled in the world :), completely simulating the operation of this system, and after its installation the system can be completely dismantled.

Below is a photo of this emulator:

Now the emulator is being tested on a Toyota Tundra 2UZ-FE car, the “check” does not light up, “the car does not complain” about the malfunction of this system. The emulator is currently in the “prototype” stage and will be improved in the future. There is only one advantage from installing the emulator - you save an amount that would be enough to buy a Zhiguli in decent condition. And lastly: on a TLC200 car with 2UZ-FE and one pump there will be a different emulator firmware.

Reasons for the error

Code P2416 may mean that one or more of the following problems have occurred:

  • The connectors of oxygen sensors No. 2 and No. 3 (Bank 1) are mixed up.
  • The connection wires for oxygen sensors No. 2 and No. 3 (Bank 1) are mixed up.
  • Sometimes the cause is a faulty PCM.

Almost always, the problem begins to appear after repairing or replacing the O₂ oxygen sensors. Most likely, the electrical wires were mixed up during connection.

How to Troubleshoot or Reset Trouble Code P2416

Some suggested steps to troubleshoot and fix error code P2416:

  1. Connect the OBD-II scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic connector.
  2. Read all stored error codes to find out when and under what circumstances the error occurred.
  3. Clear the errors from your computer's memory and test drive the vehicle to see if the P2416 code appears again.
  4. If an error code appears, visually inspect the #2 and #3 (Bank 1) oxygen sensor connectors and wires to see if they are reversed.
  5. If no problem is found, test the PCM and replace it if necessary.

When does error 4lo appear?

The blinking of the lamp sometimes does not start immediately after turning on the car. This symbol may not appear even after starting the machine. Drive a few meters in “Drive” mode and the signal appears. The reasons may vary. With such diagnostics, the most common of them is a malfunction of the so-called “frog” - the brake pedal. This is a small button located above the pedal lever. It becomes clogged with dirt and dust, resulting in poor contact. This problem, which is designated P0504 “Brake Switch “A”/”B”, will be shown by computer diagnostics.

Attention! Moreover, if you simply delete this error and press the brake several times, the lamp will not light up again. You must drive a few meters for the fault to appear. If the light comes on again, it means the mechanism needs to be cleaned.

In other cases, the diagnostic tool will show an error code, based on which it will be possible to find the source of the trouble.

Diagnosis and problem solving

The first step is to remember if any work has been done recently on the exhaust and O₂ sensors. If yes, then most likely this is the cause of this problem. Most likely, when connecting, the electrical connectors or wires of the O₂ oxygen sensor No. 2 and No. 3 Bank 1 were swapped.

Visually inspect all connectors and wiring leading to the O₂ sensors. Check to see if the wires are damaged, frayed or melted, and repair if necessary.

Most likely the connectors have been swapped. You can try swapping these two oxygen wiring connectors as a first repair step. Then clear the trouble codes and do a drive test to see if the code returns. If it doesn't come back, then most likely that was the problem.

If P2416 appears again, you need to carefully inspect the wiring and connectors of the O₂ sensors on the PCM side. Make sure the wires are in the correct pin locations going into the PCM. Inspect for misplaced or damaged wires and repair if necessary.

If necessary, check the continuity of each individual wire from the PCM to the O₂ sensor and repair or replace as necessary.

A PCM malfunction should be considered as a last resort if all other tests have failed. But if the PCM does fail, you should take it to a qualified technician for repair or replacement.

Troubleshooting

The appearance of the 4lo designation may be a symptom of a complex disorder. It’s like a pain syndrome in a person, which is pointless to suppress with pills - in this case, by disconnecting the battery terminal or resetting errors. Problems will appear again soon. It is necessary to eliminate the immediate cause of its occurrence.

Ignoring the problem will ultimately lead to either an unexpected stop of the car along the way, or to severe disruption of the operation of the fundamental components of the car - the engine or gearbox. Such breakdowns will already result in much larger monetary and time costs than timely diagnosis, identification of the problem and its elimination before the appearance of associated unpleasant and expensive problems.

Carrying out diagnostics, and even more so eliminating an error such as 4lo, without knowledge of the operation of the differential, gearbox or motor, as well as their electrical systems, is unsafe for the operation of the machine. Savings can result in large costs. Therefore, it is better to entrust repairs to professionals who have at their disposal the necessary electronic equipment, software and suitable tools for working with the machine.
