It's time to change the battery. And this is the rare case that the original VVB is replaced even before it throws error P0A80 (replace the hybrid battery). Well, first things first.
For the information of Prius owners, VVBs in 20ke, 30ke and Alpha are absolutely the same (28 elements connected in pairs), except that the battery case in 20ke is slightly different. Only 20s on one VVB last 2 times longer than 30s and Alphas. There is a living example when a 20ka on its native VVB has already covered 500,000 km, and the battery is normal. In general, in the 20s with a mileage of 200,000 km, the battery condition is very good with the difference between the “cheerful” and the “not so vigorous” pair being only 0.2V, while in the 30s and Alfas with a mileage of 170,000 km this difference can be 0.6V, with a failure of 5-7 pars. If there is a difference of 1V, the battery can be thrown away. It's kind of strange, isn't it))
The first problem is that 30s and Alphas put a greater load on the VVB than 20s. A more powerful electric motor, higher currents, all for the sake of higher vehicle dynamics. Accordingly, a larger number of discharge-charge cycles. Each battery has a certain number of cycles. In 30k of these cycles it occurs more than in 20k when covering the same number of kilometers. And the saddest thing about this is that a bad battery, losing the capacity of its cells, quickly discharges, increasing the number of discharge-charge cycles several times.
The second problem follows from the first. Due to frequent discharge and charge, the elements heat up. And here comes the story of Toyota, which did not make the VVB cooling more efficient. There are 3 temperature sensors on the battery. And they are configured in such a way that the cooling fan turns on at a high blowing speed too late, when the VVB is already very overheated (there are only 6 speeds). The operating temperature range of the VVB is +25…+35 degrees. In Alpha, the air intake pipes are generally located at the feet of the rear passengers. As a result, all the dust from the mats is sucked into the cooler. And if the owner also has a dog, whose hair also easily gets into the air ducts, or even worse, someone puts bags or bags on the rear floor mats, then you can immediately save up for a new VVB. As a result of all this, the elements lose capacity and sag in voltage, and sometimes swell like an expired can of tomato paste.
What ways are there to somehow extend the life of the battery:
1. ELM 327. The diagnostic adapter will make it possible to regulate the fan speed and control the temperature of the VVB through an application on a smartphone.
2. Drive with air conditioning. The incoming air for cooling the VVB comes from the passenger compartment. When the windows are open in hot weather, warm street air helps to heat the battery.
3. Keep the fan clean. There are examples of completely clogged cooler blades and the driver is not aware of this.

But let's get back to my battery.
A year ago, he founded the Hybrid Club www.instagram.com/hybrid_club_kms in his city, and as the club developed, it became necessary to purchase a scanner (OpenPort 2.0 diagnostic cord) and the Global Tech Stream program, since participants needed impartial diagnostics of hybrids. I also started ordering fresh VVB and elements for club members from EV-Service in Khabarovsk www.instagram.com/ev_service. And for the last half a year I’ve been studying the intricacies of batteries, and of course I’ve been constantly analyzing my own. Today the Prius has 151,000 km on it, of which I have driven 78,000 km in 4 years. As a result, the difference between a good and a bad pair was 0.49V, with 5 pairs defective.
Native VVB with 150,000 km mileage
In fact, this difference is the beginning of the end; further degradation is inevitable. 1.5 months ago, on a happy occasion, I bought his dead VVB from one of the club members, whose battery was changed, for 6,000 rubles. I took 10 elements that were still alive from it and eventually boosted my VVB to a difference of 0.27V (I didn’t take a screenshot). I’ll say right away that such VVB repairs are a temporary solution. It may be enough for a year and a half. Then he will die anyway. A month after this repair, Alpha came to me for diagnostics with error P0A80. And the situation there was generally sad. The difference reached more than 2V on one of the pairs.

The owner did not want to shell out 50-60 thousand rubles for a new VVB. And I offered him my repaired one for 30,000 rubles. The deal was completed. I put my VVB in Alpha, and the dead one from Alpha for the time being while I get a new battery.
I immediately felt the symptoms of driving on a dead battery:
1. Failure after pressing the pedal.
2. Loss of traction for 1-2 seconds while driving.
3. Frequent engine starts due to rapid discharge of the VVB.
4. Urban consumption has increased slightly.
