The Land Cruiser Prado car began to be sold in 1990. It was equipped with diesel and gasoline engines with a volume of 2.4 liters, which had electronic fuel injection, and a diesel unit of the 3L family.
After the update in 1993, this car began to be equipped with 2 engines: gasoline - 2.7 liters. with a power of 150 hp. power and a 3-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 130 hp. strength Customers could buy variations in 5 or 3 door design. They stopped producing the 1st generation in 1996.
At the end of November 13th, the mid-sized SUV Land Cruiser Prado ’14 began to be sold in our country. Which was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This car has received many changes both in equipment and technical characteristics.
Options
The Prado 120 was delivered to Russia in two main trim levels - Luna and Sol (European analogue of R1 and R2).
Luna (R1) - basic minimum configuration. Velor interior, single-zone climate control, two airbags and a 2.7 liter engine.
Sol (R2) - “rich.” Leather interior, dual-zone climate control (most people turn it off due to rotten pipes), electric front seats, side airbags. Options may include: rear air suspension, shock absorbers with adjustable stiffness, parking sensors, headlight washers, roof rails and a third row of seats.
The letter designations TX, TX Limited and TZ (three doors) are present only on right-hand drive Japanese cars.
The GX nameplate could be with any configuration, but the engine was only 2.7 petrol (3RZ-FE or 2TR-FE) or a 3-liter diesel without a turbine (5L-E). VX was fitted with a four-liter gasoline (1GR-FE) and a three-liter turbodiesel (1KZ-TE). There were no similar designations on the body of European Prados. In addition, in Europe, cars were completed based on the whim of the client. Therefore, there may be “hodgepodges” without reference to standard configurations.
Chassis
Toyota land cruiser prado suv (Toyota land cruiser prado suv)
The suspension of the 120th Prado is made in the best Toyota traditions - 200 thousand without repairs is not the limit. Previously, only the front stabilizer struts and CV joint boots would have to be changed.
The weak point of the chassis can be called the wheel bearings. But they quickly fail, mainly due to dirt and dust. Therefore, the method and location of operation matter. Even in the worst case, after 100 thousand km the hub should come off.
The reliability of the suspension does not exempt you from checking its condition before purchasing. Many people consider the Prado's chassis to be indestructible and don't look at it for years, especially before selling it. Restoring the entire suspension will cost a lot of money, so be sure to do diagnostics. Moreover, if there is air suspension and shock absorbers with adjustable stiffness.
The air suspension on the Prado 120 is a different story. There is a camp of fans:
- the machine does not sag when fully loaded;
- more comfortable, as it is equipped with TEMS shock absorbers with variable stiffness;
- inexpensive spare parts.
And opponents:
- additional service with comparable comfort;
- air springs break;
- the compressor and receiver breaks down;
- Body level sensors are faulty.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. The TLC Prado 120 has air suspension installed only on the rear axle. Under urban operating conditions, it runs 200-250 thousand km without problems. Pneumatic cylinders cost from 100 dollars apiece, sensors from 50. If necessary, a compressor will cost $200. Quite reasonable price tags.
Therefore, it all depends on your attitude to the “pneuma”. If you want, you can. In extreme cases, the rear suspension can easily be converted to a conventional spring one. Everything falls into place without any “collective farm”. Also, TEMS adjustable shock absorbers are often replaced with conventional ones due to their high cost. Check before purchasing. By the way, KYB produces an analogue of the original TEMS for the 150th Prado at three times cheaper (catalog numbers - 741071, 741072). On the 120th they also melt, you just need to scaffold and file a little (more details here).
Transmission
Toyota land cruiser prado 4.0 at elegance - technical specifications
The gearboxes of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 are also designed with a safety margin. Mechanical is rare (21 out of 659 on sale). Until August 2004, the automatic transmission was four-speed (A340), after - five (A750). This did not affect reliability. 200-300 thousand mileage without repair is quite a standard indicator.
The service life is greatly reduced by off-road “forays”, aggressive “rides” in the snow and constant towing of heavy loads.
Therefore, before buying a Toyota Prado 120, be sure to pay attention to any shocks during shifts and the smell of burning on the automatic transmission oil dipstick - this should not happen. The dipstick, however, is only available on the 4-speed gearbox
Changing the oil in automatic transmissions is not regulated by the manufacturer. But for long and trouble-free operation of the box, it is better to change the oil every 60 thousand km.
All-wheel drive doesn't cause much trouble. The safety margin of the gearboxes is 250+ thousand km. You need to keep the breather clean. If it is clogged, then due to pressure the oil is squeezed out through the seals. And if the level of lubrication is insufficient, increased wear occurs. In other words, a clogged breather can quickly “kill” the gearbox.
Some 120s come with a differential lock. But it is intended for use in extreme situations (if it is firmly seated) and at minimum speeds (up to 8 km/h). It's like firefighters - only break glass in case of fire.
A little history
Second update of Toyota land cruiser prado 150 (2019-2020)
The Prado model was born in 1985 in the form of the 70th series. They have little in common with the 120 (in fact, only the name). In 1996, the Land Cruiser Prado was reborn into the 90th series. Like the 120, it is created on the Toyota 4Runner platform and with independent front suspension. It was positioned as the main competitor to the Mitsubishi Pajero. But there were no sales records, perhaps due to low-power engines.
The third generation of the Japanese SUV turned out to be a real breakthrough for Toyota. The LC Prado 120 is still liked by many both in appearance and in its characteristics. Although technically he is not without sin. More details below.
The 120th series was produced from 2002 to 2009. There was only one official restyling during this time, in 2007. The changes are purely cosmetic: the headlights and chrome on the radiator grille were darkened, buttons were added to the steering wheel and black wood-look inserts were added to the interior. And in 2008, the surrounds of the audio speakers in the doors were made silver.
More significant changes took place in August 2004. Then the 4-speed automatic was replaced with a 5-speed one and the 2.7-liter engine was updated.

Classmates
It is not for nothing that Toyota engineers emphasize that Prado is the only SUV in its class with a frame separate from the body. There really are no direct competitors. But if you approach it specifically as an SUV, then both the Land Cruiser 200 and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport can be called competitors.
1 / 3
Toyota Land Cruiser 200
Mitsubishi Pajero
1 / 3
They are rather conditional competitors, if only because they are cars of a different class. “Dvuhsotka” is a step higher, and noticeably more expensive (the price starts from 22.5 million tenge). “Sport” (from 13.5 million) is actually a competitor to the Toyota Fortuner, which is no longer represented on the Kazakh market. And the price of the old Mitsubishi Pajero starts from 17.2 million tenge.
There are three days of off-road ahead. Let's get comfortable
While driving an SUV, I reflexively assume the position of a tractor driver - my legs are bent at the knees, my back is straight. Almost. This landing allows you to have good control over the off-road situation.
There is less pathos in the cabin, the steering wheel is from a Kruzak and more functionality
The first time I found myself in the driver's seat, I literally fell to the bottom of the cabin. Either the previous rider was a giant, or he imagined himself driving a sports car. He raised the back - it was better, but... And a minute later he said for the first time: “Wow!” As soon as you pressed the key, the pillow quickly and almost silently rose to the desired height. In general, as you understand, the range of adjustment is huge! A couple more adjustments to the backrest, lumbar support, steering wheel - and everything was almost perfect. Only the distance between the side support rollers is too large. Probably designed for a wider back... Or a hint that I still need to grow to Prado.
Transmission
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 was equipped with 5-speed manual and 4- and 5-speed automatic transmissions A340/341E. The latest versions of the A750F series appeared in 2005 for gasoline engines. Diesels began to be equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission and a 6-speed manual transmission in 2006. The Prado was delivered to most markets with permanent all-wheel drive, but in the Middle East modifications with a plug-in front axle were available, represented by vehicles with 3RZ and 5L manual transmissions. In the first case, a Torsen center differential is used, distributing torque in a ratio of 40/60 and equipped with a lock.
Diesel
Officially, diesel modifications were not supplied to Russia. However, they can still be found on the secondary market. The diesel engine was a four-cylinder 1KD-FTV in-line unit. Versions produced before 2004 developed 163 horsepower. After 2004, power increased to 173 horsepower. The engine has direct fuel injection. Working volume – 3 liters. How has the diesel Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 proven itself? Reviews say that this unit is not adapted for our harsh climate. The engine is difficult to start in cold weather, and some also experience problems with the fuel system.
Differences between Land Cruiser and Prado on the go
Land Cruiser 200 (left) and Land Cruiser Prado 150 (right)
We should also talk about the handling and cross-country ability of the Prado and Land Cruiser in comparison, how they differ. Both SUVs have an impressive appearance that inspires respect for the owner. Driving the Prado is comfortable, the car is responsive to steering movements. On a flat road, the car behaves confidently, maintaining an even course without steering. Driving abilities allow the driver not to strain on any roads, incl. completely off-road. But when braking and turning, the car tilts. This all-wheel drive SUV with a lot of endurance is not intended for an urban environment, although it looks prestigious there.
Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) System
The machine is equipped with a Multi-Terrain Select system, which allows you to select the desired driving mode, adapting to different types of road surfaces. There are many assistance systems available to help drivers make driving easier. The body geometry and dimensions of the SUV allow you not to think about road obstacles. Easily overcome slopes of 42 degrees, water obstacles up to 70 cm deep, 215 mm ground clearance, impressive departure, entry and ramp angles. But this is not the limit, the Kruzak 200 has even higher cross-country ability!
Body Stabilization Device (KDSS system)
The KDSS system makes it easier to drive the Kruzak, minimizing body roll (unlike the Prado) and increasing the suspension travel, softening it off-road (KDSS is available on the Prado, but not on all trim levels). Large dimensions allow Kruzak to move ahead on any off-road terrain. When driving the Cruiser 200, you can not pay attention to the presence and condition of roads. In any conditions, the car will provide a confident ride with sufficient traction.
ABS sensor circuit
The ABS adaptation system automatically scans the road surface and adjusts the degree of wheel locking. There is also an assistance system that optimizes turns in completely off-road conditions and the start of movement on ascents and descents. In extreme situations, the driver is also assisted by a smart all-round visibility system. As a result, the Kruzak 200 can overcome fords up to 70 cm deep without preparation, and with a ground clearance of 230 mm, it can pass any off-road surprises without any problems.
Surround View System Land Cruiser 200
To summarize, it can be argued that the differences between the Land Cruiser and the Prado in terms of chassis are its greater cross-country ability (thanks to its dimensions and additional driver assistance systems) and better handling.
Off-road assistance, but not a tow truck
In the center, in the same place as before, is the transmission control unit. Instead of one large rotating disk there are now two, framed by keys.
An empty key in the lower right corner may mean the presence of another feature of the updated Prado - a Torsen limited-slip differential in the rear gearbox. In other versions there may be a button to force the rear diflock on
However, if you take a closer look, it will become clear that the lower knob now switches transmission modes (previously they were switched by a lever on the right side), and the upper one is responsible for selecting the Multi Terrain Select (MTS) mode or the speed of the Crawl Control system. In our version, by the way, there was no forced locking of the rear differential, so the lower right button was empty. And yes, there is a new one among the MTS modes. But all you need to know about this is that it is called Auto, i.e. the system is as automated as possible and itself adapts to different surfaces.
Technical characteristics of Land Cruiser 150
The choice of power units is not great. The Prado has 150 diesel and two petrol engines. A manual transmission is only available in the cheapest standard version; the rest of the trim levels are equipped with an automatic transmission.
Toyota Prado 150 engines:
Engine Toyota 2.7 2TR-FE
2.7 2TR-FE - gasoline 4-cylinder in-line internal combustion engine, 163 hp. The fourth generation of the SUV has this engine only in the Standard configuration, paired with a manual or automatic transmission to choose from.

Gearbox and all-wheel drive
Toyota LC Prado 150 after restyling in 2013 received a 6-speed automatic transmission A761F. This box does not cause problems and runs for more than 300 thousand kilometers. The developers took care of its safety by disabling the possibility of unnecessarily abrupt starts. The only thing that can send the device for repair ahead of time is dirty oil. It is necessary to change the lubricant for the first time at a mileage of 80 thousand, after which the replacement interval is reduced to 60 thousand.
The two-stage VF4BM transfer case is responsible for permanent all-wheel drive in the Prado 150 2014. The Torsen center differential is asymmetrical and equipped with forced locking. For an additional fee, you can install a rear axle lock. The Full-Time system distributes force between the axles in a ratio of 40:60, this ratio can vary from 28:72 to 58:42.
Safety
The developers of Toyota Prado took great care of the safety of the driver and passengers. Even with standard equipment, the list of equipment is impressive:
- ABS and EBD systems;
- emergency brake booster;
- exchange rate stability system;
- active head restraints for the front seats;
- curtain airbags;
- front and side airbags, as well as knee airbags for the driver;
- Isofix child seat mounting.
Expensive Prado configurations, in addition to the above, have traffic assistants (monitoring blind spots when changing lanes, assistance when reversing, etc.).
Those. Part
The photo shows a standard gasoline unit. It is worth noting that the parts of the power plant are made with a high level of quality.
Over the 7 years of its existence, the model has received many power plants, and this is only for cars supplied to the CIS countries. Under the hood there could be one of four gasoline engines, a diesel unit or a turbocharged diesel engine. The most popular powertrain options, which are installed on 90% of cars in Russia, include three options:
- Petrol 2.7-liter engine. Its power is 163 horsepower. Can work with both automation and mechanics.
- A more powerful 4-liter petrol version. Power – 282 hp. In the latest versions it only worked with automatic transmission.
- Diesel 3.0 TD. Equipped with a turbocharger, power – 173 horses. Works with automatic or manual transmission.
It is worth noting that the diesel unit was not officially supplied to the CIS. Manufacturers considered that it was not intended for harsh climate conditions and lack of roads. How did this engine get under the hood of the Prado 120 in Russia? Elementary, many motorists prefer to drive cars from other countries. For example, most Kruzaks in the Far East have the steering wheel on the right - the proximity of the Japanese border makes itself felt.
If desired and possible, you can go on an off-road cruise, but you need to know: this is not the Prado 120’s habitat.
Technical characteristics are suitable for use in the city and on the highway. The car can be equipped with a 4- or 5-speed automatic transmission, as well as a manual transmission. European versions of the Prado 120 have permanent all-wheel drive. As for the versions for the CIS, here the drive is also full and permanent. And in cars intended for use in the UAE, a plug-in mode is installed. The rear suspension is semi-independent, the front suspension is independent. This applies to all versions of the Prado 120.

On road
The 150's performance on the highway has not changed. As they say, restyling does not affect the maximum speed
I just noticed the adaptive cruise control with the function of keeping the distance to the car in front. I don’t remember my grandfathers having it before
However, whether they did or not, such a function is not offered for our market.
Among other things, I would highlight the good old KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System). It is this that makes it possible to drive a bridge car with a high center of gravity along a winding road and not worry too much about rolls and the danger of capsizing. Hydraulic cylinders at the front and rear of the stabilizer mounts restrain their movement and twisting, making the suspension stiffer. In Namibia, we had enough turns and not too strict control over compliance with traffic rules (more precisely, there were restrictions, but we never met the police) to evaluate the work of this system. The second advantage it gives off-road is that it completely disables the hydraulics of the anti-roll bars, which significantly increases the travel of the rear suspension. Hanging the Prado is another task.
Suspension, brakes and wheels Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2020-2021
The front suspension is independent, on springs, with anti-roll bar.
There are options for the rear suspension. More affordable versions have a dependent wishbone suspension on springs. In the “top” versions, pneumatic cylinders are provided instead of springs. An anti-roll bar is used in both designs. Pneumatic elements maintain a given body height and, in real time, regulate suspension stiffness. The system has operating modes: Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ (the latter appeared after modernization). In addition to the suspension, the system also affects the operating mode of the engine and transmission.
When driving, the car is comfortable, with good steering responses (taking into account the frame structure, high body and large weight). On a flat road, the Prado does not require frequent steering, like its predecessor, and predictably holds its course.
The KDSS body stabilization system with adaptive shock absorbers and pneumatic elements clamps the suspension at high speeds, and on off-road conditions, on the contrary, “releases” it and turns off the anti-roll bars for better traction.
The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster. To turn the steering wheel “from lock to lock” it will take 3 turns. The turning radius is 5.8 meters.
Ventilated disc brakes with ABS and brake force distribution are installed on both axles.
Depending on the configuration, the Prado is offered with steel and alloy wheels of 17 and 18 inches. Tire size for base steel wheels is 245/70R17. For light alloy wheels size 265/65R17 and 265/60R18.
Exterior Land Cruiser Prado
The new model differs from the pre-updated variation mainly in appearance. It should be noted the appearance of new lights in the front of the car with LED dimensions that go down along the radiator grille. The next difference is the updated radiator grille itself, which has a more aggressive look and powerful frame.
It featured a large concern logo. The updated round “fog lights” installed in the front bumper, the side of the car remained unchanged, as well as the wheel arches.
As for the rear view, we can note the headlights of a different shape and a large chrome strip with the name of the car on the trunk. The colors of the car can be from 10 different tones and shades. In principle, the designers did not change the appearance of the car, which is why the model is considered successful, but began to make several general changes to slightly change the appearance.
What is air suspension
This is a type of car suspension, with ground clearance adjusted using special air cylinders. Among passenger cars, this type of suspension is found in executive cars, as well as maximum trim levels of SUVs.
The air suspension consists of 4 elements:
- balloons or pillows;
- compressor;
- control and valve unit;
- receiver.
The essence of how air suspension works is that by adjusting the pressure in the airbags, the position of the car relative to the road surface changes. As pressure increases, the cushion becomes stiffer and ground clearance increases. At low pressure, ground clearance becomes minimal.
You can change modes (increase or decrease pressure) automatically or using a special switch inside the SUV's cabin. When driving on a level surface at a speed not exceeding 100 km/h, the car should be in a central position relative to the road. When crossing off-road terrain at a slow speed, it is advisable to increase the ground clearance, and when driving along the highway at a speed of more than 100 km/h, reduce it.
The car switches modes fully automatically when turning to reduce roll. Air is pumped into the adjacent cushions; after cornering, the pressure is reduced through the valves.
Thanks to this option, manufacturers make cars “softer” and, accordingly, more comfortable for overcoming road bumps or sharp turns.

More details
There is plenty to choose from in the line of Japanese engines, but in Russia the situation is limited, so 60% of the market is 4-liter gasoline engines. We will tell you about all internal combustion engines, because it is not known which one you will be looking for.
- 2TR-FE is a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine producing 163 horsepower with 241 units of torque.
- 5VZ-FE – 3.4-liter V6 from the previous generation, producing 185 horsepower and 294 H*m of torque.
- The most popular 1GR-FE in Russia is a 4-liter V6 with 249 horses (taxable) and 380 units of torque. The best engine in terms of dynamics, but the worst in terms of consumption.
- 1KD-FTV - 3-liter turbocharged in-line diesel engine. It exists in three power versions: 163, 166, 173 horsepower. The dynamics are rather weak, but it saves the budget in terms of consumption.
The 2.7-liter engine is rare, fortunately there is nothing positive about it. Here is a timing chain drive that lasts for 150 thousand kilometers. The weight of the One Hundred and Twentieth Land Cruiser Prado kills the piston group within 250,000 km, and it is also prone to oil seal leaks. Constant monitoring of valve clearances and oil consumption is required. The owners simply ruined this engine by ignoring oil consumption and overheating.
The popular 4-liter engine lives quietly for 300 thousand kilometers, and if the owner later restored the operation of the attachment, it will last half a million kilometers. The first time the cylinder head gasket blew, the problem was solved. The problems here include contamination of the TLC Prado throttle body, poor performance of the lambda probes and the need to adjust the valve clearances. The main thing is to find a motor without the consequences of overheating.
A diesel engine is traditionally dependent on the quality of fuel. The EGR valve is often capricious. Bad fuel kills the cylinder head, pump and of course injectors, which last a maximum of 250 thousand kilometers if the diesel fuel is of high quality. In the maximum power version, the pistons and turbine cannot withstand. Diesel engines have a belt instead of a chain, which should not be allowed to break.
The 3.4-liter engine does not cause problems other than age-related ones.
Land Cruiser Prado 120 owners are faced with corrosion of the engine compartment wiring. Sensors located there also suffer from this. Surprisingly, this only applies to gasoline engines.
Technical features and customer opinions
What are the technical characteristics of this model? In general, the Prado remains a classic frame SUV. All versions have a differential lock. The active suspension system, which makes off-road driving much easier, also deserves attention. This is relevant in Russia. In addition, the electronics limit the suspension travel, so that even on the most “evil” off-road conditions, the body of the SUV does not sway. There are so many auxiliary systems that you can drive comfortably on any surface.
As for the engines, as before, the base version is considered to be a 2.7 liter diesel engine with a power of 163 hp. (with a torque of 246 Nm). Only the base version has a five-speed manual transmission; all other trim levels are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is approximately 11.6 liters per hundred kilometers. The maximum speed is 165 km/h.
Transmission - no questions asked
The all-wheel drive system with center differential lock is reliable; the main thing is to periodically change the oil in all elements. In this case, the structural elements will travel above 250 thousand kilometers. An optional cross-axle differential lock was installed at the rear.
The engines were paired with a 5-speed manual or automatic A340 – 4 gears, A750F – 5 gears. There are no complaints about the manual transmission; it can only be killed by high loads. Automatic is much more common.
The old 4-speed transmission lasts a long time, sometimes even surprisingly long. Here is a simple design that can be serviced in any garage. The 5-speed version is also perfectly tuned, so it has no wear products, has an eternal gas turbine engine and is not prone to overheating. If you actively push it off-road, its resource will be limited to 200,000 km, a quiet mode will give it a very long life. The A750F was also installed on its main competitor, the Mitsubishi Pajero.
Body and interior
Prado 120, like previous generations, is created on the 4Runner or Hilux Surf platform. From them he inherited a frame structure, two body types: 3- and 5-door. In the second case, a 3-row interior layout was used. The short modification was designated “J125”. It is equipped with two rows of seats. An additional fuel tank was not offered for such vehicles. The interior is more spacious than its counterparts due to the low floor for a frame car. In addition, the range of adjustments for the driver's seat is wide. The rear sofa is equipped with an adjustable backrest and a folding mechanism.
Compared to the previous generation, the style of the Prado 120 has been changed: the photo indicates a more streamlined design.

Toyota highlander 3.5 at elegance (10.2017 - 07.2020) - technical specifications
Inside, a lot has changed in the direction of comfort. The build quality is good, but Toyota has never been famous for the quality of materials. There is simple leather, acceptable plastic and beautiful wooden inserts. The leather is gradually worn out, kinks appear, but they still look decent.
The interior of the Prado 120 looks simple - a 4-spoke steering wheel, an analog instrument panel, a simple radio, or a display of a multimedia complex, an unusual style climate control unit. In general, everything is simple, but everything you need is there.
This is a 5-seater SUV with plenty of space. Optionally, two folding seats were installed in the rear. There is less space in a 3-door SUV. The trunk numbers have grown - 620/1850 liters. 3-door version - 403/1150 liters.
Interior problems are minimal, sometimes plastic panels come off, but the climate system of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado causes more inconvenience. Initially, noise appears and the drive twitches. The source of the problem is a gear motor with worn contacts and dried brush grease.
Pros of Prado 150
Land Cruiser Prado 150 2009
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is original and at the same time versatile. In expensive trim levels, it personifies status and is suitable for businessmen; simpler trim levels are often used as a workhorse or for hunting and fishing trips. The first advantage follows from here:
- A large number of options. When purchasing a new Prado 150, it is difficult to understand the long list of additional equipment offered. The advantage of Toyota is that it does not impose options, making them a mandatory part of the package, but offers to install almost any of them to choose from for an additional fee.
- Buying a Prado can be a profitable investment, because this car is slowly losing value. It is very liquid on the secondary market, thanks to the prevailing opinion about the reliability of Toyota.
- Reliability is not a myth. Of course, any equipment breaks down, and Prado is no exception, but compared to its competitors, it has fewer problems.
- Another advantage is comfort. A spacious interior, omnivorous suspension and a spacious trunk make the SUV convenient for travel.
- Patency. It retains honest all-wheel drive, mechanical locks and a continuous rear axle.
