Toyota camry 1990, sedan, 3rd generation, v30 (07.1990 - 05.1992) - technical specifications and equipment

4539 Apr 20

The 1991 Toyota Camry had body markings XV10. At first it was produced exclusively as a sedan and was called Scepter. However, in 1992, a station wagon was also launched into production, which had one more word in its name – “Gracia”. Under its own label, Toyota Camry was exported in 1993. However, these versions were somewhat broader than what Japan made for the domestic market. Then a situation arose that at the same time two types of machines were being produced under the same name.

Specifications

With the XV30 body, the Toyota Camry V in Russia was presented with two power units that run on gasoline fuel:

  • 4 liters, 152 horsepower;
  • 0 liters, 186 horsepower.

The engines were equipped with the following types of gearboxes: five-speed manual and four-speed automatic. In America there was a more powerful option: there you could buy a car with a 3.3 liter power unit (225 hp) and a 5-speed automatic transmission. In turn, Japan assembled Camry for itself only with 2.4 liter engines, equipped with an automatic transmission. However, the car had configurations not only with front-wheel drive, but also with all-wheel drive.

The car was produced on an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with power steering and a disc brake system on all four wheels.

The Camry tank traditionally holds 70 liters of fuel, which can cover up to 815 kilometers in a combined cycle. The 520 liter trunk is quite spacious.

Vehicle equipment in the XV10 body

Toyota Camry 1991 model year was produced in three versions:

  1. 2 l. on automatic transmission (four-speed);
  2. 2 l. on manual transmission (five-speed);
  3. 3.0 l. on automatic transmission (four-speed).

Versions with lower engine power had 136 “horses”. The stronger units had 188 hp. The car is a four-door family sedan with a gasoline engine. The car develops the first 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, while in the combined cycle the fuel consumption is 8.5 liters. for a hundred kilometers.

The front-wheel drive car was equipped with two types of braking systems. Disc brakes were installed at the front, and a drum mechanism was installed at the rear.

According to the dimensions of Toyota Camry 1995. and older did not go beyond the usual family cars. The body length of 4730 mm fully met the requirements of comfort and the best aerodynamic properties. The width of the Japanese version, which can be found more often than others in Russia, was 1770 mm. It had a height of 1440 mm, which passed on to the next generations. For the XV10 Toyota Camry body, 1995 was the last year when the brand had a mass of 1360 kg. The next generations became heavier by at least 40 kg.

Reviews from car owners

Dmitry, 46 years old, Ekaterinburg

In the early 2000s. was the owner of a 1993 Camry with a 125-horsepower gasoline engine, automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The car was imported from Japan by a merchant marine sailor who monitored its technical condition and purchased many original spare parts in advance. After the purchase, I replaced all the fluids, and during the next year of operation I changed the engine mount and brake discs. There were no complaints about the body. When the car was sold in 2008, there was not a single spot of rust on the paintwork.

Oleg, 25 years old, Perm

After receiving my license in 2021, I purchased my first car, which turned out to be a Camry V30 with right-hand drive and a stated mileage of 360 thousand km. The car had an all-wheel drive system, but during the first drive onto a country road, the muffler, which is located close to the ground, was torn off. After the repair, I began to move more carefully over rough terrain, but knocking noises appeared due to worn rear suspension hinges. I repaired the car myself in the garage. Over the next 2 years of operation there were no breakdowns, then I exchanged the car for a Corolla E140.

Body

Toyota camry restyling 2021, sedan, 9th generation, xv70 (11.2020 - present) - technical specifications and equipment

The design of the sedan has been transformed into a more modern style. Now the headlights have the shape of thin petals, between which a strict radiator grille is installed. The front bumper has fog lights rounded at the bottom, and rich trim levels are equipped with built-in washers.

There is nothing interesting on the side except a molding with a light chrome strip. At the rear there are large lights, rounded at the sides. The trunk lid of the thirtieth Camry is slightly curved inward. The massive bumper does not stand out in any way.

Much attention should be paid to the reliability of external elements. The paintwork is surprisingly durable, you need to try hard to leave a scratch or get chipped

Minimal chrome elements quickly lose their presentation, and headlights often become cloudy. The optics can be polished, but you will still end up with a replacement. Sometimes reagents affect the wiring of the power mirrors.

The manufacturer provided a 12-year guarantee against through corrosion. In reality, complete double-sided galvanizing saves the body. If the sedan has not been in an accident or been restored by poor-quality repairs, then corrosion is a rare matter.

The dimensions of the model are also slightly different from the American one:

  • length – 4815 mm;
  • width – 1795 mm;
  • height – 1500 mm;
  • wheelbase – 2720 mm;
  • ground clearance - 150 mm.

Equipment and technical characteristics of the car

Cars intended for the domestic market have traditionally been distinguished by a rich starting package and a large range of additional options. The interior had fabric or velor upholstery, and the driver's seat was continuously adjustable in height. The front seats were equipped with soft headrests that were adjustable in 2 directions. The rear sofa had integrated neck supports and a soft armrest in the center. To store small items, drawers were used on the rear wall of the center console and a shelf under the glass.

The steering wheel was mounted on a column with angle adjustment, and additional mirrors were provided on the sun visors. Electric side window drives for the front and rear doors were introduced as standard equipment. The driver could block the operation of the mechanisms with a button located on the armrest of the door trim. To monitor the operating parameters of the vehicle systems, a dial instrument cluster with additional indicators was used; on expensive versions, a digital unit was offered.

The cars were equipped with a welded body, which included a power frame to increase rigidity and safety in case of side or frontal accidents. The power unit was mounted transversely at the front; the base model was equipped with front-wheel drive. The manufacturer offered a Four modification with rear-wheel drive. The transmission included a transfer unit, a driveshaft and a rear gearbox connected to the wheels by axle shafts with hinges. When using all-wheel drive, the fuel tank capacity was reduced due to the shaft recess in the tank.

The front suspension was equipped with standard MacPherson struts, and the rear was equipped with a 3-link suspension, supplemented by struts and coil springs. There were anti-roll bars at the front and rear. Some cars used shock absorbers with a control unit that made it possible to adjust the stiffness. The rack-and-pinion steering had a hydraulic booster, and expensive modifications included a mechanism for changing the position of the rear wheels (the system made it possible to improve maneuverability).

The vehicles were equipped with a 4-speed hydromechanical transmission with winter mode support. The basic modifications used a 5-speed gearbox with synchronizers in the forward gears and a dry clutch.

The gear ratios of speeds and the main pair depended on the power and volume of the power plant.

Main parameters of V30 cars:

  • wheelbase - 2600 mm;
  • body length (depending on type) - up to 4670 mm;
  • width (on the sides of the doors) - 1695 mm;
  • height - up to 1410 mm;
  • ground clearance - 150-155 mm;
  • fuel tank capacity - 60-65 l;
  • maximum speed - up to 180 km/h (forcefully limited);
  • cabin capacity - 5 people;
  • weight of the equipped vehicle - up to 1380 kg;
  • permissible vehicle weight - up to 1880 kg.

Toyota Camry models from 1990 to 2000

From 1991 to 1998, there were several Toyota Camry models in parallel. Small-sized models V30 and V40 were produced for the Japanese market. And the American buyer was offered larger cars, the XV10 and XV20, with a modified design.

V30 body for Japan

The 3rd generation of the legendary Japanese sedan was produced from 1990 to 1994. This body is notable for the new options that have appeared. The most expensive trim levels included a driver airbag and ABS. Also in the expensive Camry V30, the developers installed rear wheel steering (4WS). At the same time, there was a significant price gap between the basic and top configurations.

Camry V30

Different engines were available for the V30:

  • 1.8 petrol 4S-FE 115 hp;
  • petrol 2.0 3S-FE 135 (140) horses;
  • 2.0 petrol 3S-GE 165 horsepower.

A turbocharged diesel engine, 2C-T, was also installed, producing 91 horsepower.

The black Camry is a classic. V30 facelift

As before, buyers had access to all-wheel drive and two transmissions: 5 manual transmission and 4 automatic transmission. The automatic transmission could operate in winter and sports mode.

The V30 model was restyled in the summer of 1992. After it, the GT package was replaced by a touring package. The list of options for this option included original R15 alloy wheels, a spoiler, foglights, a leather steering wheel, and two-way steering wheel adjustment.

Model Toyota Camry V40

The creation of the fourth generation Toyota Camry was accompanied by a serious economic crisis in the land of the rising sun. In this regard, the developers focused on the practicality of all V40 trim levels.

Camry V40

The power plants of the V40 generation were inherited from the previous V30 model (petrol 1.8 4S-FE, 2.0 3S-FE). Only the diesel engine has changed; instead of the 2.0 2C-T, a 2.2 3C-T (with a power of 90 hp) was installed.

Independent, MacPherson-type spring suspension was installed front and rear. Improved four-wheel maneuverability of the Camry V40 was achieved through the use of the 4WS system.

The 1996 V40 update affected the optics; they became more modern. Also available in the middle trim levels: wood trim, airbags, ABS, remote control key and leather steering wheel.

Body for America XV10 1991 - 1996

Camry, designated XV10, appeared in the United States in 1991 and was sold in three body styles: sedan, station wagon and coupe. The wheelbase of the car was increased to 2620 mm, the length of the body was 4725 mm, and the width was 1770 mm.

Camry XV10. Sedan and station wagon.

The American version of the XV10 was equipped only with gasoline engines: 2.2 5S-FE 125 (130) hp, 3.0 3VZ-FE 185 horses, and after an update in 1994 - 3.0 1MZ-FE 188 horsepower. There were 2 gearboxes - 5 manual transmission and 4 automatic transmission.

Camry XV10 coupe

Standard safety features included a driver's airbag, front seat belts with load limiters, adjustable head restraints, and anti-lock and traction control systems. For an additional fee, the XV10 was equipped with cruise control and an airbag for the front passenger.

XV20 – the fifth generation of the Japanese sedan

The XV20 model appeared in 1996, replacing the first Camry XV10 wide body. But in Japan, the XV 20 was called the Toyota Camry Gracia until 1998, because at the same time a “narrow” version of the V40 was produced.

Camry XV20

In the fifth generation cars, the interior design was completely changed. The interior used high-quality plastic with wooden inserts. The instrument panel was harmoniously combined with the interior. The level of sound insulation in the cabin was not satisfactory. A comfortable position behind the wheel has been designed for the driver. The steering column and lumbar support were adjustable.

The gasoline engines used in the fifth generation Camry sedan were made in two variations: four-cylinder 2.2 5S-FE with a power of 140 hp. and V6 2.5 2MZ-FE, producing 200 horses. This body, like the XV10, did not offer diesel engines. But in the Japanese market, the XV20 retained all-wheel drive in some trim levels.

Camry XV20 feed

The V6 2.5 2MZ-FE petrol engine was not offered on the global market for the fifth generation XV20. Instead, the cars were equipped with an older internal combustion engine - V6 3.0 1MZ-FE (194 hp). Also available to buyers was a four-cylinder 2.2 5S-FE with 131 hp.

Interior and exterior

The body of the V30 generation cars had a reduced roof height and an elongated front part, visually elongated due to a plastic bumper. Headlights with standard incandescent lamps were equipped with glass external elements. Curved direction indicators were placed at the corners of the bumper (there were no side repeaters on the wings). Between the headlights there was a narrow grille with a chrome trim; there was an additional air intake in the bumper.

A windshield with an increased angle of inclination and rounded edges of the body reduce aerodynamic drag and noise levels when driving at speeds over 120 km/h. Mirrors were located in the corners of the front doors, external plastic elements were painted in body color by default. The factory offered several basic shades and paints with a metallic effect. The rear lighting consisted of side combination lights and a central section with reverse indicators located on the hinged luggage compartment lid.

The car's interior had a classic design with a massive instrument panel with smooth contours, made of foam plastic and equipped with a steel load-bearing frame. The central part of the panel smoothly transitioned into a console with a massive armrest. Under the lid, trimmed with fabric or velor to match the overall style of the interior, there was a box for storing small items. Door cards made of soft plastic had decorative inserts, and there were pockets in front for storing drink bottles and road maps.

Carpet was used to decorate the interior floor (the color of the material depended on the design of the seats), and plastic linings were used on the sills and pillars. The metal floor had a small protrusion that did not restrict the passenger from sitting in the middle part of the rear seat.

The back of the sofa could be folded forward to increase the volume of the luggage compartment, and a spare wheel of reduced size was stored under the folding floor panel in a special niche.

More details

The engine line consists of three gasoline engines, one of which was not available on the Russian market. These are new engines for the model except for the top one.

  1. 1AZ-FE – 2-liter 16-valve engine with 150 horsepower and 192 H*m of torque. This power is already enough for quite comfortable movement.
  2. 2AZ-FE – 2.4-liter engine with VVT-i system, multipoint injection and a power of 151 horses + 220 H*m of torque. With it, the sedan accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds, and fuel consumption increases to 12 liters.
  3. 1MZ-FE is a 3-liter naturally aspirated V6 that produces much more – 186 horsepower with 273 units of torque. The dynamics improve slightly, but fuel consumption increases to 16 liters.

The pair is a 5-speed manual of the base engine, or a 4-speed Aisin U-series automatic. The drive is traditionally front-wheel drive.

The suspension of the fifth Toyota Camry was taken from its predecessor with minor changes. MacPherson struts are used all around. European models have a tighter design, American models are softer, so cornering is more scary. The steering is light, and the poor information content is intimidating at high speed.

The braking system is sufficient for a Japanese sedan. These are disk mechanisms, ventilated at the front with all the necessary electronic assistants: ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP, TCS.

Car engine

The plant used several types of gasoline engines on V30 cars:

  • in-line 4S-FE, the displacement of 4 cylinders was 1.8 liters, power - 125 hp. With.;
  • in-line 4-cylinder 3S-FE with a volume of 2.0 liters and a power of 135 hp. With.;
  • V-shaped 6-cylinder 165-horsepower 1VZ-FE 2.0 l;
  • 6-cylinder V-shaped 4VZ-FE with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 175 hp. With.

All gasoline engines were equipped with a multipoint injection system and had a 4-valve gas distribution circuit with hydraulic clearance compensators. Fuel was supplied by electronically controlled injectors; the controller automatically adjusted the ignition timing. The plant offered a diesel modification with a 91-horsepower 2C-T engine (4 cylinders) equipped with a turbine.

To maintain the specified engine temperature, a forced liquid cooling system with a thermostat and an electric fan was used.

What to choose from

Toyota Camry XV30 is a fairly popular car for its time and in Russia it sold an impressive number of copies. Therefore, on the used vehicle market you can also find many offers for the sale of the model.

But for 350,000 rubles, you will have little choice in terms of modifications. Despite its considerable age, the car is very marketable, so more often you will come across variations with a 2.4-liter engine, which is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. There are also “automatic” ones for that kind of money, but in percentage terms they are much smaller.

If you dream of modifying a 3.0 liter, then it is better to save up more money. For that kind of money you won’t find even a heavily used copy.

Second generation (v20, 1986-1991)

Experts traditionally believe that the history of the modern Toyota Camry, as an independent and successful model, takes its origins from the 2nd generation of the car. It is also significant that the car was introduced in 1986 in the business class.

Second generation (v20, 1986-1991)

The first thing that catches your eye is the rounded lines of the body, which gave the vehicle’s exterior a deliberate roughness and massiveness. There is no trace left of the previous design. The model was sold in traditional sedan and station wagon body styles. In addition to the updated design, the car received modern electronics and improved technical solutions:

  • 2 liter diesel engine and 1.8-2 liter petrol engine;
  • fuel consumption per 100 km varies from 8 to 11 liters for a 2 liter diesel automatic and 2.5 liter petrol automatic, respectively;
  • transmission - automatic or manual;
  • acceleration to 100 – about 12 s;
  • The maximum speed is limited to 165 km/h for a 1.8 liter automatic, in the case of a 2.5 liter manual transmission – 210 km/h.

Second generation front panel (v20, 1986-1991)

All-wheel drive vehicles were available only in the domestic Japanese market; they were delivered abroad on pre-orders.

Brief description of the 1993 Toyota Camry car

V30 cars were offered to customers with 4-door sedan and hardtop bodies (for which a separate designation was used - Camry Prominent). At the same time, the Scepter model was present on the Japanese domestic market, which since 1993 has been exported under the Camry index.

Over the next few years, Toyota's product line included 2 Camry models (for domestic and foreign markets), which differed in appearance, body dimensions, displacement and engine power.

Engines and transmissions

In the European market, the Toyota Camry 30 was equipped with two gasoline engines: a four-cylinder 2.4 2AZ-FE with a VVT-I system at the inlet and a V6 3.0 1MZ-FE. On the American market there was an opportunity to buy a car with a 3.3 3MZ-FE engine.

Engine 2.4 2AZ

The 2.4 power unit has a timing chain drive, the chain is reliable, and before 300 thousand km it will not need replacement. Thanks to the use of a variable intake valve clearance system (VVT-I), the engine pulls even at low speeds, which makes it pleasant to use in urban environments. In the V6 3.0, the gas distribution mechanism is driven by a belt, which must be replaced at least once every 150 thousand km and only together with rollers.

If the quality of the fuel is poor, the spark plugs will have to be changed every 20 thousand km, and the oxygen sensors will also require replacement. The engine runs smoothly with good spark plugs; the throttle valve needs to be cleaned.

The 5th generation Toyota Camry in Russia was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission with a 2.4-liter engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission with both engines. The American versions also had an adaptive five-speed automatic transmission. To break these transmissions you have to try hard; problems will arise by 200 thousand km if they are not serviced at all. Change the oil every 50 thousand km and there will be no failures in the gearbox.

Reviews

Konstantin Kolonnikov, driving for 30 years, driving a Toyota Camry for 9 years

I have a 1993 Toyota Camry, but it drives! I've been using it for almost 10 years, and I don't plan to change it yet. I have changed 5 cars in my life and I understand a lot about them for the money they are sold for. Camry is a wonderful unit. I don’t know how modern cars are, but the old ones just go with a bang. Of course, I even rebuilt the engine in it, but I only did it after I had driven 400,000 km. The device there is quite simple, so I could do it myself in the yard. He breathed new life into it and now, probably, it will travel the same amount of time.

Lev Gennadievich, 16 years of experience, driving a Toyota Camry for 7 years

I have never seen a stronger car than the 1994 Toyota Camry. I took it because it was cheap and cheerful. Repairing and operating this brand is a pleasure. Firstly, because it is inexpensive and practical. Secondly, it is extremely rare to have to repair a car. At one time I replaced all the wearable parts, for example, in the suspension, all sorts of belts and brakes, and that’s it, you drive for another 50-80 thousand and don’t worry about anything.

Andrey Pushilin, driving for 9 years, driving a Toyota Camry for 8 years

Toyota Camry 1992 came to me and was inherited from my father. And I’ve been driving it for eight years now. And all because she doesn't make me worry. The car is very good both in technical characteristics and in comfort. If the suspension is in good working order, then on the road it rides as if on waves - softly and easily. It leans a little when cornering, but it’s tolerable. The only thing is that its motor is a little noisy. Although what car from 1992 can now boast of quiet engine operation? By the way, thanks to my love and care for it, no one, looking at the photo, believes that the car is already a quarter of a century old. Although I drive it every day all year round.

Andrey Grigoryants, 7 years of experience, 4 years driving Toyota Camry

Toyota Camry 1993 - a machine for centuries. I chose for a long time, looked at the photos, studied the technical data, and then I agreed that for my money the most profitable purchase would be the “Japanese” of 1993-1994. And I was right. Yes, she is a little old-fashioned, but she does not have some charms. The main thing is that it has wheels and drives quickly. And automatic parking, TV and voice control are all show-offs, in my opinion. When someone asks what kind of car this is, I am proudly a 1994 Toyota Camry. And most don't believe it because of its excellent condition.

Sergey Krivosheev, I have been driving a car for 26 years, I have been driving a Toyota Camry for 5 years

I've been driving since 1991, and by chance I now have a 1992 Toyota Camry. However, I’ve only been using it for three years, but I regret that I didn’t buy this unit earlier. I have a 188 horsepower car with a 3.0 engine. From the outside, the car is nice even in comparison with modern forms, but since the interior is in gray tones, it looks dull. I note that the finishing plastic is of better quality than in modern examples. The car is already 25 years old, and nothing creaks inside yet. In addition, there is no dirt or residue left on the plastic. I recently put it up for sale, so many people call and ask, looking at the photo, if it’s really in such cool condition.

Chassis situation

Have you forgotten that the Toyota Camry 30 is aimed mainly at the US market? If not, then you shouldn’t be surprised that the car is extremely imposing and sedate in its habits. The steering wheel is light and uninformative, without any distinct sensitivity - you can set the direction of movement of the sedan only by touch, intuitively. At the same time, when cornering, the rolls are quite high, and at the limit, the rear axle breaks into a prolonged drift, which is difficult to correct.

The suspension handles the vast majority of irregularities extremely gently. Sometimes you even get the feeling that the car is floating on the waves of the road surface. However, not everyone can be satisfied with this situation, because prolonged vertical rocking can provoke an attack of seasickness.

There's plenty of room in the rear, but there's a limit to knee room.

The suspension keeps up with the main components and also demonstrates a surprisingly long service life. In particular, even stabilizer struts and wheel bearings last for 100,000 kilometers. As for shock absorbers and silent blocks of lower suspension arms, they need to be changed every 150,000 kilometers.

Second generation Toyota Camry - V20 1986 - 1990

The second generation Toyota Camry was produced from 1986 to 1990. Compared to the first generation, the rounded shape of the car was clearly visible. Thus, the developers have increased aerodynamic performance.

Camry V20 - second generation

Gasoline engines for the V20 were used exclusively of the injection type:

  • 1.8 1S-i 85 horsepower;
  • 1.8 4S-FI 105 hp;
  • 2.0 3S-FE 120 horses;
  • 2.0 3S-GE 140 hp

There was only one diesel engine for the V20 - 2.0 2C-T 82 hp. (85 horses after the model was restyled in 1988).

All engines were equipped with a manual gearbox or automatic transmission in 5 and 4 stages, respectively.

Salon V20

Pay attention to the digital instrument panel. After restyling in 1988, the top-end GT (GranTurismo) package appeared

It featured the most powerful engine, a strut under the hood, an improved air conditioning system, a rigid TEMPS sports suspension, and more.

After restyling in 1988, the top-spec GT (GranTurismo) version appeared. It featured the most powerful engine, a strut under the hood, an improved air conditioning system, a rigid TEMPS sports suspension, and more.

The second generation vehicles were distinguished by increased engine life, high corrosion resistance and improved safety indicators.

Camry safety

Offered in 1993, Camry V30s were equipped with inertia seat belts for the driver and passengers. The upper mounting points on the center pillars were height adjustable. There was an airbag in the steering wheel, and headrests protected the cervical vertebrae of the driver and front passenger from injury when hitting the rear of the car. The basic version featured disc brakes with 2 separate hydraulic circuits and an ABS system that supported electronic force distribution.

Rare bird. Test drive Toyota Camry Prominent E

photo by the author and Vladimir Novitsky

Among the abundance of Toyota Motor models, the 1992 Camry Prominent came into our field of vision - a great rarity for Novosibirsk.

Under a great name

In the Toyota Motor assortment, a model called Camry Prominent (English - outstanding, prominent) appeared in May 1991 and was intended for the Japanese domestic market. The car turned out to be prominent and, for that time, equipped with the latest technology.

We got a 1992 model for a test drive. And ironically, the working volume of the injection V6 located under the hood turned out to be exactly 1992 “cubes”. The 140-horsepower (JIS) 24-valve unit, rare for the market, bears the factory designation 1VZ-FE. It is interesting primarily because of its transverse arrangement with the right block tilted toward the interior. So, at first glance, this looks like an in-line “three”. How to get to the rest of the spark plugs hidden under the “spider” of the intake manifold, one can only guess. It is striking that even then the engine was equipped with an automatic shutdown device when the lubrication system was depressurized. We conducted an experiment: with the engine running, we open the filler cap, and it immediately stalls. Interesting solution!

Only one 3-cylinder cylinder head is visible

The hood is crowned with a strange emblem, absolutely not similar to (the leading origin of the former production of textile machines).

Smooth contour lines

There is also no mention of belonging to Toyota Motor on the cast 10-spoke wheels of the 15-inch wheels. But the familiar monogram still adorns the trunk lid. And when you get into the cabin, you realize that this is really a Toyota.

A rare combination

The driver's seat is quite spacious and very comfortable, which is facilitated by electric seat drives and manual steering wheel adjustment (horizontally and vertically). When the ignition key is removed, the steering wheel occupies the highest position, making it easier to get in and out. The presence of a front airbag is indicated by corresponding imprints on the steering wheel hub. In 1992! It is strange, however, that there are no red pictograms to indicate unfastened seat belts. The electric drive of frameless door windows is controlled by push-pull keys, which must be pressed to lower the glass and pulled to raise it. Brown velor, although it darkens the interior, is more practical than light. In addition, the electric sunroof provides decent lighting when the curtain is open. The instrument panel is very different from the “classic”: not a single dial instrument. The electronics display numbers and icons against the dark background of the concave screen. At first, the graphic linear tachometer was not perceived at all. But over time you get used to his testimony.

Promenade

It's time to take an introductory trip in a Japanese carriage with a name similar to the French word promenade (promenade - walk). To the standard pair of pedals for a car with an automatic transmission, a parking brake pedal – a “scissor” – has been added here.

Having moved the range selector to sector “D”, we set off and clearly hear the door lock clicking after 20 km/h. At around 5 thousand revolutions, the tonality of the engine changes sharply, and the “thoughtful” hydraulic mechanics selects the next gear (and so on 4 times). The power steering is quite adequate when maneuvering. But the rim of the steering wheel, in my opinion, is a bit thick - due to the braid.

Driving a Toyota

ABS did not show itself at all on that slushy spring day. Apparently the dampness had disturbed something somewhere. The brakes are grippy. The suspension once had adjustable shock absorber stiffness (sport – norm), but all that remains of its former luxury is the corresponding button. But there was no discomfort or knocking felt.

This key was once used to adjust the stiffness of the suspension

In general, despite its age and solid mileage, the Toyota Prominent deserves high praise. The promenade was a great success and turned out to be truly outstanding.

In my opinion, the best car is a new one. Well, what should we do with old cars, of which there are several times more on the roads? And which regularly serve their owner for 5-10 years. Japanese and European - they are bought and sold, run on the roads, break down, get into accidents - in general, the phenomenon is quite common. Not everyone can afford an expensive “toy” from a car dealership. And this time we met not a completely new, but well-preserved car.
I’ll say right away: the 1992 Toyota Camry with a 2-liter engine did not give us any strong impressions. Not only positive, but also negative. A well-tailored and tightly sewn car - with a touch of healthy conservatism. In our age it is difficult to surprise anyone with normal, well-thought-out ergonomics. But the fact remains that I didn’t need to get used to the Camry, I didn’t need to adjust. The large, solid car is very obedient; The ease of control is such that any driver can easily handle it.

The “old lady”, of course, will not become a serious rival for relatively “fresh” models, under the hood of which there are sometimes many times more “horses”. But it is quite pleasant to drive. A “workhorse” that is best suited for relaxed driving – without pseudo-sporting grimaces.

From a fairly large car, you expect a roomy interior. There really is a lot of space there, and boarding and disembarking is not a problem. The interior, which is important for a new car, is clean, well-groomed, without visible scuffs or scratches.

The driving position is quite comfortable. What do power seat adjustments do? The height of the steering column is also adjusted; The instrument panel is clearly visible through the steering wheel. Heating and ventilation systems operate efficiently with simple and clear controls.

The visibility situation is typical for modern cars. Forward and to the sides - no problem, but back it is limited by the size of the interior mirror.

The suspension is soft and comfortable. While driving, almost no external noise penetrates into the cabin. But external odors get there, which is not good.

Overall, the car made a good impression on me: large, spacious, comfortable and quite dynamic for its age. Of course, it is inferior to modern “monsters”, but it gains its kilometers easily and without fail.

The Toyota Camry Prominent of the end of the last century can easily be considered a classic of the Japanese automotive industry. You rarely see such a model in city traffic. I am sure that the Toyota “classic” did not come to us from the Japanese domestic market through a dealer network. Many Japanese models are simply not supplied to the world market. The car is from 1992, but even today it looks quite attractive. Due to the V-shaped 6-cylinder engine and the complex plexus of intake manifold pipes, an elongated hood was obtained; to complete the classic style, the stern was also lengthened. The guaranteed rigidity of the body is emphasized by the absence of window frames in the doors. Anti-fog lamps are prudently installed in the head light blocks. It’s probably not at all easy to purchase such optics, which combine a turn signal, marker, low/high beam and fog light in one package. You'll have to call all the auto repair shops, or, as a last resort, contact.
Good impression of the interior and trim. Sitting in a comfortable chair, you can’t help but compare the quality of materials at that time – and today. I don’t want to say that now the materials and finishes are not the same; no, technology just changed. And the Prominent plastic trim will give a head start to many modern cars. Apparently, at that time the Japanese had not yet followed the path of reducing prices in every possible way, offering cars even as blue-gray as apples for an additional fee. The interior of the test car is calm and comfortable; an extraordinary solution for the instrument panel.

All information about the vehicle’s vital functions is displayed on the LCD monitor in the form of pictograms. And in terms of various electrical adjustments, there is no shortage; here not every modern Toyota can compare with Prominent. Even the stiffness of the shock absorbers can be changed at the touch of a button: feel the sporty style.

Looking into the engine compartment, you involuntarily think of those who have to troubleshoot certain problems. How not to get confused in such a web of wires, hoses, sensors? Do you think, “will there be any extra parts left after assembling it?” It looks like an impressive engine, but in reality it’s only 2 liters. However, the driving characteristics of the “young old man” are quite acceptable: it does not puff or puff. The car moves easily, quickly and, despite its age, reliably. Prominent will still take a walk - among his great-grandchildren.

I respect the beautiful age!

Having a certain amount of money on hand, say, 5-5.5 thousand USD, a person faces the question: which car to buy - domestic or imported? Using our test drive as an example, I can say with confidence: you shouldn’t take a mystery car (when I want, then I’ll go) when there is an alternative. And there it is - Toyota Camry Prominent 1992.
Despite its impressive age, the car has been perfectly preserved and was received by the current owner in quite good condition.

Externally, the Camry Prominent is the same as Vista, only the inscriptions on the back are different. Now about the filling: the interior, so to speak, is completely “electric” - electrically adjustable seats, electric display. In general, electricity is present almost everywhere. Finding anything that can be adjusted manually is almost impossible (one exception is the steering wheel). Pleasant to the touch, light velor adds light and space to the interior.

On the move, the car behaves perfectly: good acceleration - despite the decent size and weight of the car; responsive steering, excellent brakes. Engine with a displacement of 2 liters and a power of 140 hp. works great at low speeds. At speed, the Prominent didn’t show much agility, but I don’t consider this a minus: the car is not a racing car and is intended for a calm and relaxed ride. The low but decent ground clearance allows you to overcome traces of potholes and road repairs without worrying about the bottom and sills.

Overall I liked the car. It's not often that you come across a rare car (only for the Japanese domestic market) that arrives at its next owner in excellent condition.

Chassis

The Toyota Camry's suspension is completely independent, with MacPherson struts front and rear. Its design, although distinguished by its originality, was worked out on previous generations of the model - for example, even on the third generation car (V10 body), the chassis could boast of great health.

The only weak point of the chassis can be considered to be the front pillars, because of which even fresh cars on the road began to pull to the side (usually to the right). When this was discovered, dealers were instructed to rotate the upper spring cups 20 degrees. If this did not help, the assembled parts were replaced under warranty.

Even the stabilizer struts and bushings easily withstood up to 100 thousand km on our roads. But the life expectancy of shock absorbers (2,400 rubles each) and brake discs largely depends on driving style. For calm drivers, the discs can withstand up to three sets of pads. For “racers” they become unusable not due to wear, but due to warping from overheating.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of Toyota Camry 1993:

  • spacious interior;
  • good ventilation and heating system;
  • ease of repair and maintenance;
  • powerful engine and reliable automatic transmission;
  • gasoline engines that start at air temperatures from -30°C without additional preparation.

Disadvantages of cars:

  • the mileage of surviving copies exceeds 500 thousand km;
  • lack of original spare parts;
  • high fuel consumption;
  • insufficient ground clearance;
  • weak suspension that cannot withstand driving on poorly paved roads;
  • damage to the power elements of the body by corrosion due to natural aging.

Toyota Camry review

The new Toyota Camry 2021 model year managed to amaze skeptics and critics with its new predatory design and interesting characteristics. But the manufacturer decided that the Russian version of the car should be much less spectacular than the American or Chinese one.

However, even with the changes that were conceived for the new generation of Toyota Camry, the car turned out to be truly driver-friendly for absolutely all markets.

The new 2021 Toyota Camry is based on the modular Toyota New Global Architecture or TNGA platform in its mid-size version GA-K. The car is now made using high-strength steels, body rigidity is increased, and a double-wishbone suspension is installed instead of the previous McPherson struts.

In order to minimize the risk of rollover, the manufacturer has lowered the center of gravity.

Exterior

But the car has increased slightly in length and width. It now measures 4895 mm in length and 1839 mm in width. The manufacturer decided to stretch the wheelbase by 49 mm, reaching 2824 mm. And this allowed the new

The Toyota Camry 2020 will surpass even the Lexus ES with its 2820 mm in this indicator.

In Russia, only one car design is available - the basic classic, while Americans have the opportunity to enjoy two exterior options - calm (LE and XLE versions) and more aggressive (SE and XSE).

Salon

The driver can receive information about the road and the current characteristics of his car from three screens at once. The first is the Entune 3.0 media system screen, which is 8 inches in size. The second is a seven-inch one, showing the status of the instruments. The third is a 10-inch head-up display that opens on the windshield.

Technical stuffing for Russia

Production of the 2021 Toyota Camry is carried out at a plant in St. Petersburg, from where cars of the two previous generations were distributed throughout the cities.

Unlike the American and Chinese versions, the Russian Toyota Camry 2021 will be equipped with a two-liter 6AR-FSE engine with 150 horsepower, while foreign car enthusiasts will be able to choose one of three naturally aspirated engines of different power.

Like the “Chinese”, the Russian Toyota Camry 2021 has a six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Camry sixth generation – XV30 2001 – 2006

This body has significantly increased in size (almost 7 cm in height, the wheelbase has increased by 5 cm). This happened because the main market for Camry was North America, and there the client loves big cars. The XV30 generation was sold between 2001 and 2006.

Camry XV30 before restyling

In the US and Canada, buyers of the XV30 were offered three petrol engines. Among them are 2.4 2AZ-FE 157 hp, 3.0 V6 1MZ-FE 192 (210 horsepower after update) and another V6 3.3 3MZ-FE (225 hp). In America, manual and automatic transmissions were available with the XV30, but there were no all-wheel drive trims.

In Russia, the Camry XV 30 was equipped with two gasoline engines: 2.4 2AZ-FE (152 hp) and V6 3.0 1MZ-FE (186 hp). Mechanics were only available with a smaller engine.

Camry XV30 black fabric interior

In Japan, the XV30 was available only with a 2.4 2AZ-FE engine producing 159 hp, but you could buy the car with both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. In Japan, the XV 30 was better equipped than in other countries. Even the starting 2.4 G version had electrically adjustable front seats and a remote control key.

History of the development of Toyota Camry V30 1992

The first cars of the V30 generation were shipped to customers in early 1990. The car was developed by Toyota for those who want to travel in comfort and require increased interior capacity.

Sedans could be equipped with gasoline engines: for example, a 2-liter supercharged diesel engine of the 2C-T generation was offered. The cars had front-wheel drive, and a model with all-wheel drive was produced (a 4-wheel steering system was offered as an option regardless of the type of drive). Subsequently, based on the V30, the XV30 platform was created for foreign markets.

In 1992, a number of changes were introduced to the design:

  • an enlarged radiator grille began to be used;
  • air conditioning is included in the list of standard equipment;
  • for supporters of a sporty style, the ZX Touring package began to be offered;
  • A 2.5 liter V-shaped 6-cylinder petrol engine (for the Prominent model) appeared on the cars.

Interior

The cabin is incredibly comfortable and spacious. The interior is devoid of any annoying details, the dashboard is neat, convenient and intuitive. True, not everyone liked the shiny, wood-look inserts and the overly large and convex buttons on the steering wheel, which are not very conveniently located.

The machine is designed, as they say, to last. Representatives of this generation of Toyota Camrys are still successfully driving around the streets of the whole world and do not think of leaving the global used car market. The reason for this is not only reliable performance, but also low cost. A representative sedan can be bought for relatively little money for a similar class, and operation will be several times cheaper than vehicles of similar characteristics from other brands.
