Toyota camry 1994, sedan, 4th generation, v40 (07.1994 - 04.1996) - technical specifications and equipment

6th generation review

High-quality interior of the 40th body.
Most of the versions that dominate the market now are dealer versions. Their production has been established in Russia since 2008, and they are well adapted to local conditions. There are also quite a few copies exported from the Middle East and the USA on the secondary market.

But this option is not worth taking, since they have weak anti-corrosion treatment. The climate system and cooling are designed for hot climates.

Toyota Camry V40 sedans were sold in Russia, well adapted to the road conditions of our country.

All models are distinguished by a rich set of equipment:

  • the basic Comfort model has 6 airbags, climate control, air ionizer;
  • Comfort Plus was equipped with a five-speed gearbox;
  • Elegance has leather seats and parking radar;
  • Prestige – it has cruise control, xenon headlights and stability control;
  • Luxury – equipped with a six-speed gearbox, V6 engine

The Toyota Camry 40 body is loved by domestic motorists and in its class has a large lead in sales compared to competitors, not having the best driving performance or design in its class.

Toyota Camry XV50

Toyota camry 1990, sedan, 3rd generation, v30 (07.1990 - 05.1992) - technical characteristics and configurations The
Toyota Camry XV 50 generation, which appeared in 2011, amazed car enthusiasts with increased interior space compared to its predecessor. The suspension became more collected, which made it possible to get rid of excessive imposingness.

Good looking

As for engines, this model also boasts the top-end 3.5 engine among the presented naturally aspirated gasoline engines. However, if in the previous generation identical power units were supplied to the American and Russian markets, since 2012 the Camry XV50 (55) in Russia has been equipped with a 3.5 engine derated to 249 horsepower. The reason for this was the increase in transport tax. This engine was also installed on the restyled Camry XV55.

Black Camry - classic

Options

Despite the reduction in power of the 2GR-FE engine, the dynamic characteristics of the sedan, now produced in Russia, remained high: acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour dropped to 7.1 seconds, but the speedometer needle cannot exceed the 210 kilometer mark.

Cylinder head

A pleasant bonus for Russian car owners will be fuel consumption from 7 liters in suburban mode to 13.2 on city streets. As before, only a six-speed automatic transmission is installed on the Camry 3.5 in the 50 body. Ground clearance increased by 2 cm, but trunk volume increased to 506 liters.

1 - from the radiator, 2 - thermostat, 3 - bleeder fitting, 4 - to the control housing, 5 - from the control housing, 6 - to the heater, 7 - from the heater, 8 - to the radiator, 9 - oil cooler

The oil volume for this V6 engine is the same - 6.1 liters.

Increasing the volume of the luggage compartment

Tank volume of Toyota Camry v40.
technical characteristics of the Toyota Camry It happens that the trunk volume does not always correspond to the size of the car. Fortunately, the Toyota Camry is a business class car and the manufacturer has provided it with a spacious luggage compartment. But, if this space is not enough for you, we offer several options to increase the internal dimensions of the car trunk:

  • Since this car is equipped with a full-size spare tire, which takes up a lot of space, you can replace it with a spare tire, which takes up much less space. To do this, you will not only have to replace the spare tire itself, but also remove the plastic organizer for fastening the full-size spare tire, and instead install a “dock” mounting bolt (sold in any car store);
  • when transporting large cargo, the most logical, albeit temporary, solution would be to lower the backrests of the rear seats (we remind you that this function is not available in all trim levels);
  • choose trunk mats that are sized for a specific type of car. In absolute terms, this will increase the trunk volume of your Camry slightly, but will make operation more comfortable and ergonomic.

Years of production of Camry 40 and an overview of the main models

Toyota camry 2021, sedan, 9th generation, xv70 (01.2017 - present) - technical specifications and equipment

Toyota Camry 40 was first presented to the public in 2006. Its serial production began in 2007. It was replaced by the Camry 50 in 2011, so production of the Camry 40 ended.

For the CIS market, the Toyota Camry 40 comes with two engines:

  • 4-liter 2AZ-FE engine, 167 hp;
  • power unit 2GR-FE 3.5 liter, 277 hp.

The 2AZ-FE engine originates from the 2AZ engine, designed based on the 2.2 liter 5S in 2000. The main problems of the 2 4 liter engine are:

  • increased vibration;
  • thread failure in the block;
  • low maintainability of the cylinder block.

Despite the shortcomings, the 2AZ-FE engine has a long service life. There are engines that have lasted 350-400 thousand kilometers without any problems. The power unit is not prone to coking. Engine oil consumption is low and is associated primarily with the crankcase ventilation system and leaking oil seals. Therefore, the car owner should not forget about checking the rubber seals.

The 2GR-FE engine is an engine from the 2GR line of powerplants. It has six cylinders arranged in a v-shape. Its design solutions are borrowed from earlier 3MZ-FE and 1GR engines. The power unit has the following disadvantages:

  • Oil leak. The reason lies in the oil pipe of the lubrication system. It is made using metal-rubber-metal technology. ITS rubber part becomes tanned over time and leaks. In 2010, the manufacturer took this shortcoming into account and replaced the tube with an all-metal one.
  • Extraneous sounds are created by the phase shifter clutches of the VVTi system. This does not affect the resource, but may create discomfort for the driver.
  • Floating idle speed. There are many reasons for this, but the most common problem is a clogged throttle body.
  • Scuffing of the fifth cylinder. Associated with overheating or the use of low-viscosity oil.
  • Pump leaking. Occurs even at low mileages.

Six-cylinder power unit 2GR-FE
The engine has cast iron liners. This makes major repairs more affordable.

Infographics of Toyota Camry 40 versions on the world market

Right-hand drive Toyota Camry 40 cars use a 2.5 liter 2AR-FE engine. Its main distinguishing feature is the presence of hydraulic pushers. Cars with this engine were not officially supplied to the CIS countries.

The 2AR-FE power unit began to be installed on the Camry 40 in 2008. On its basis, the 2AR-FXE engine was developed, intended for the hybrid version of the car.

How to crimp wire lugs without tools

From the point of view of construction technology, crimping wires without the appropriate tool is prohibited, the only exception being rough installation to check the work performed. However, for any household work with low-current consumers, work without a crimping tool is allowed.

There are several methods for ending cords without tools:

  • soldering using refractory high-temperature solders;
  • “non-standard” crimping using cores, hammers, and notching the tip

Soldering tip

For soldering, you, of course, do not need serious and expensive press pliers/crimpers, but the following “household” repair tools should be present in your arsenal:

  1. Soldering iron (from 80 W)/blowtorch/gas burner.
  2. Soldering kit (fluxes/rosin, various types of solders).
  3. Heat shrink tubing and/or electrical tape.
  4. Basic knowledge and skills of working with a soldering iron.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • if you have a soldering iron/blowtorch, heat it up to operating temperature, if you don’t have one, turn on the burner on the kitchen stove;
  • While the tool is heating up, we perform operations to remove the insulation from our cord (remove with a margin of 0.3–0.5 cm), making sure not to damage the cores;
  • we put the thermal insulating braid on the cord and move it to a safe distance until we need it;
  • degrease the cleaned area;
  • degrease the tip;
  • apply flux to the inside of the tip;
  • Pre-cut the solder into small pieces so that it covers the inside of the tip by about half to a third;
  • apply flux with a soldering iron to the stripped part of the cord, tin it (if there is no soldering iron, then skip this step);
  • carefully, holding the tip with pliers so that the solder particles do not fall out of it, place it on the kitchen tile (if you don’t have a soldering iron) or heat it with a soldering iron/lamp/burner for several minutes until the solder inside becomes plastic and liquid;
  • as soon as the solder is ready, quickly and carefully take the cord by the insulation and install it into the tip, while continuing to heat the tip, holding it with pliers, if there is an empty space between the tip and the solder does not come out, then add solder to these places until it will not begin to “crawl out”;
  • then turn off the soldering iron/burner and give it a few minutes for the solder to completely harden;
  • After hardening, we wrap 2-3 layers of electrical tape around the connection between the cable and the tip, move the thermal braiding, securing it at the edges with electrical tape.

Crimping using a core/hammer

This method has many disadvantages, the main one being insufficient pressure, which can lead to heating of such a connection. However, it is often practiced, especially in cases where the connection will not work with high-current devices.

This method requires a minimum of tools:

  1. Hammer.
  2. Kern (optional, but recommended).
  3. A small file for metal.
  4. Vise (optional, but recommended).
  5. Conductive paste (highly desirable).
  6. Insulation tape and/or heat shrink.

To finish with these tools, we do this:

  • remove the insulation from the cord (margin 0.3–0.5 cm);
  • make sure that the wires are not damaged;
  • straighten all the wire strands, twist them slightly (half a turn, no more!);
  • take the tip and make a small cut with a file (about 1/5 of the entire length of the tip) on the wire side;
  • put on the heat shrink, move it 10–20 centimeters so that it does not interfere; degrease the cord;
  • evenly apply conductive paste;
  • we clamp the tip in a vice or place it so that it can be comfortably held with one hand;
  • after which we completely install the wire into the tip;
  • we take a core and a hammer and begin to strike the central part of the tip, which should be “compressed” (if there is no core, then you can use the thin part of the hammer);
  • make 4–5 fixation points;
  • turn the tip over and repeat the operation;
  • check the connection for strength;
  • We put heat shrink on the connection, heat it;
  • ready, the connection is pressed!

Features of transmission and engine operation

Toyota crown 2021, sedan, 15th generation, s220 (10.2017 - present) - technical specifications and equipment

The manual transmission in the SV body on the Camry 40 is a reliable and durable unit, but sometimes premature wear of the clutch release bearing occurs after a mileage of 40 thousand kilometers. When the mileage exceeds 80 thousand, it will begin to change gears with difficulty, which means it’s time to change the clutch disc.

The automatic transmission of the Camry 40 on the 2AZ-FE “four” is also reliable, except for minor troubles with the limit switch under the brake pedal - if it fails, the gear selector does not shift. After a long period of seven years, the contact in the electronic control unit of the automatic transmission may disappear; the fault can be eliminated by properly soldering the connections.

The automatic transmission on the Toyota Camry ACV40 with a V6 engine requires compliance with the oil change schedule, but racing in forced modes will lead to rapid failure of the clutches and clogging of the channels of the hydraulic unit with wear particles.

On the Toyota Camry V40, the 2.4-liter engine is afraid of overheating and requires timely cleaning of its radiator and air conditioner - this must be done once every two years, otherwise the cylinder head will be hopelessly damaged. On this engine, if traces of antifreeze are visible near the pump and its operation is accompanied by extraneous sounds, change this unit immediately.

Both engines used in the Camry 40 require only synthetics, otherwise the clutch in the VVT-i system will refuse to work, and if you neglect to clean the throttle valve assembly after a certain time, replacing it will cost $900. Refueling with low-quality fuel will easily damage an expensive oxygen sensor.

On a Toyota Camry V40, the 3.5-liter engine can jam due to a leaky oil cooler hose, and previously this was an irreparable problem; after restyling, this was corrected by replacing the hose with a metal tube.

There are no complaints about the suspension and chassis of the Camry 40: and compliance with the deadlines for replacing consumable components and parts will significantly extend their service life. The Camry V40 photo you see below is a 2011 model.

Design

Many people mistakenly believe that the handbrake is a simple lever located near the gearbox, on the right hand of the driver. In fact, it is a whole system of elements that are connected to each other.

When the hand brake fails, in 90% of cases the culprit is a cable or a pair of cables that go to the rear brake pads from the equalizer.

To determine the reasons for the failure of the handbrake, it is necessary to understand the circuit diagram of the device and its components.

The device includes a number of structural elements. Namely:

  • Lever arm;
  • Traction;
  • Springs;
  • Lever button;
  • Main cable axis;
  • Bolts;
  • Washers;
  • Drive unit;
  • Equalizer;
  • Case;
  • Locknuts;
  • Cotter pins;
  • Right and left lever;
  • Expansion left and right strip;
  • Lock washer, etc.

Technical characteristics of Camry in 40 body

Toyota both 2006 and 2011 were equipped with two gasoline engines:

  1. The first, 2.4-liter with a cylinder head changed compared to the previous version. Performance increased by 9 hp. and for the XV40 it is already 167 hp. Fuel consumption has decreased - to 8.5 liters per 100 km in combined mode and to 11.6 liters in urban mode. Acceleration time to hundreds is 9.1 seconds.
  2. The second, with a volume of 3.5 liters and a power of 277 hp. This motor allows you to accelerate the car faster - in just 7 seconds. True, the consumption has increased, which averages about 9.9 seconds.

The luggage compartment volume of the XV40 is as much as 534 liters in the basic versions and 504 liters in the top versions. You can adjust the size of the trunk of expensive trim levels by tilting the rear seats. However, on vehicles with non-adjustable backrests, they may fold down. The model's ground clearance is standard for a city sedan - 155 mm, the same as that of more modern Camrys.

The car has a high level of safety. First of all, due to the installation of ABS and EBD systems, emergency brake booster, belt pretensioners and overload limiters even on basic versions. And also - curtain airbags, front and side airbags.

A little history

The Camry 40 went on sale in 2006. For the first two years, Japanese-assembled cars were supplied to the Russian market. Since the end of 2007, local assembly has been established. There is no difference in quality. But the suspension is adapted to our roads and the ground clearance is slightly increased. In 2009, the model was restyled:

  • changed the radiator grille and front bumper;
  • added direction indicators to the side mirrors;
  • we did a little work on the interior and added a touch screen;
  • The radio was paired with bluetooth, and a “hands-free” system appeared.

The philosophy of creating a car is a large and comfortable sedan for little money (like the Ford Mondeo 4). From this, some disadvantages of the Camry XV40 emerge, which you can put up with or eliminate yourself. For example, the standard sound insulation is rather weak and the finishing materials are not of very high quality.

Technical stuffing

Engines 2.4 and 3.5 V6

Dealer models were equipped with gasoline engines: a four-cylinder with a volume of 2.4 liters (167 horsepower) and a six-cylinder V-shaped (277 horsepower).

They have a strong chain in the gas distribution mechanism drive with the ability to adjust the VVT-i phases. Their valve apparatus can be adjusted by selecting washers. This operation should be carried out after the car has traveled 150 kilometers. Typical engine malfunctions include the fact that in cars of this series, closer to 100 thousand kilometers, the generator pulley begins to turn. This part can be replaced, the unit will continue to serve.

Transmission

The 2.4-liter Toyota Camry engine in the 40 body goes well with a five-speed automatic and manual transmission.

The six-cylinder V6 was equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. The mechanical option is considered the most reliable. In the interval from forty to sixty kilometers, significant effort is required to change gears due to early wear on the clutch release bearing, which has a release function.

The Aisin U250E six-speed manual transmission has proven to be a reliable mechanism during operation. It can be easily repaired; there is no need to rush to change it completely. It is enough to replace some parts, such as the limit switch and the contact in the control unit.

The six-speed Aisin U250E gearbox is also considered quite reliable. Its service life is largely determined by driving style. During aggressive driving, premature wear of the clutches occurs, and the valve body channels become clogged with decay products. The cost of its repair can reach eighty thousand.

The oil must be changed more often than recommended (every 80 thousand km). During this period, the external CV joints begin to knock; they come complete with the axle shafts.

Chassis

The suspension of the Toyota Camry 40 is borrowed from previous models of the V30 variety. It is highly durable. The stabilizer bushing is the first to suffer in the range of up to 80 km. Wear and tear of silent blocks includes levers, which are replaced at about 130 km.

Ball joints and shock absorbers maintain their integrity up to 200 km. The shock absorbers and transverse rear arms will last for about the same time; the rear suspension may need to be rebuilt.

The running gear of this model did not reveal any other problem areas. Stabilizer bushings remain in working condition in the range from 55 to 80 thousand. The remaining parts usually do not fail. But in the brake system, the discs in the front wear out relatively quickly. They become deformed during sudden braking. The calipers also become sour; it is recommended to lubricate them at every maintenance.

The steering shaft universal joint wears out ahead of schedule. There have been cases of oil seals and high-pressure hoses leaking in the power steering pump. Steering rods can withstand mileage up to 130 thousand km. The rack is good for over 200 thousand mileage.

Suspension

The chassis of the 40th Camry is reliable, with an average safety margin of 120-150 thousand km. Even such consumables as struts and stabilizer bushings last for 60-80 thousand mileage (in the original).

The rear suspension is multi-link. This gives comfort and smooth running, but during repairs you will need a dozen silent blocks. In the original, they are changed only together with the levers, but there are many alternative brands on sale. If you still want original spare parts, you can buy silent blocks from Toyota Avalon. They fit perfectly, see the link for part numbers.

Sometimes when diagnosing the suspension it is not always clear where the knock is coming from, everything seems to be intact. In this case, you need to check the upper shock absorber mounts. Due to the tears, they knock quite noticeably.

In general, the Camry 40 suspension is “tailored” for comfort - soft and smooth. On this basis, many criticize the Camry 40 for poor handling. But it cannot be said that the car does not steer at all. Yes, it is not suitable for racing, but it was not created for racing. For normal city or highway driving, the Camry's handling is quite sufficient. Therefore, before buying, take a test drive to dispel all doubts.

Exterior and body

The appearance of the Camry in the 40 body cannot be called bright and memorable. She doesn’t stand out in the crowd and passers-by are unlikely to turn to look at her. But at the same time, the design, despite the appearance of the next generation, does not seem outdated. The smoothed, rounded lines of the 2009 Camry hide the rather small size of the sedan. In general, the appearance of the “magpie” is discreet, respectable and quite attractive.

Like most Japanese cars, the body paint on the 6th generation Camry is not an example to follow. Chips and scratches appear easily, but the metal is well galvanized and these cars rarely rot, but time and reagents can take their toll, so be careful when buying a Camry supported one.

First impressions

Toyota Camry fuel consumption

Toyota Camry V40 looks very respectable, at the same time it has the characteristic properties of a sports car - somewhat aggressive features, hinting at greater power and the ability to accelerate instantly. After 2009, designers significantly changed the appearance of the Camry, which received a chrome strip under the turn signals, a voluminous radiator grille, the parking sensor camera was moved to a more convenient location, and the body lines changed.

Any vehicle configuration has 215/60 R16 tires. The rubber profile is high, high-quality products are supplied from the factory, so you won’t have to change them after purchase.

Fifth generation model (xv30, 2001-2006)

The main feature of the 5th generation Toyota Camry was that the car received worldwide recognition and popularity. The car sold out like hotcakes not only in the USA and Europe, but also in Russia. The Japanese manufacturer decided not to experiment and focused all its efforts on perfecting just one body - the sedan. As a result, its lines became streamlined and quite smooth, which had a beneficial effect on the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Fifth generation Camry

The interior has become more cozy and comfortable due to the use of environmentally friendly materials. The level of equipment is evidenced by the fact that the basic configuration included an ABS system, several airbags and a motion stabilization function.

The driving capabilities of the car have also changed:

  • the model was supplied to the market in 2 modifications - with a 6-cylinder 186-horsepower 3-liter power unit and a 4-cylinder 152-horsepower 2.4-liter engine;
  • fuel consumption - 10 liters per 100;
  • transmission – 4-speed automatic (later replaced by 5th) or 5-speed. mechanical;
  • acceleration to 100 km – ≈9 s. for the version with a 3-liter unit.
  • maximum speed – 225 km/h (in the version with a 3 liter automatic).

Fifth generation car dashboard

The car has lost the straight lines traditional for the Camry body, giving way to modern trends. It was during this period that the foundation for the economic success of the car was laid.

Increasing the volume of the luggage compartment

It happens that the trunk volume does not always correspond to the size of the car. Fortunately, the Toyota Camry is a business class car and the manufacturer has provided it with a spacious luggage compartment. But, if this space is not enough for you, we offer several options to increase the internal dimensions of the car trunk:

  • Since this car is equipped with a full-size spare tire, which takes up a lot of space, you can replace it with a spare tire, which takes up much less space. To do this, you will not only have to replace the spare tire itself, but also remove the plastic organizer for fastening the full-size spare tire, and instead install a “dock” mounting bolt (sold in any car store);
  • when transporting large cargo, the most logical, albeit temporary, solution would be to lower the backrests of the rear seats (we remind you that this function is not available in all trim levels);
  • choose trunk mats that are sized for a specific type of car. In absolute terms, this will increase the trunk volume of your Camry slightly, but will make operation more comfortable and ergonomic.

Salon

The interior of the car corresponds to its class, featuring good design and high-quality materials. The large steering wheel has buttons for controlling audio, temperature control and the trip computer. The center console is distinguished by its solid appearance and convenient arrangement of elements - a stereo system for basic versions and a multimedia screen for top-end ones. Among the materials used for finishing are soft plastic with metal inserts, high-quality fabric and genuine leather for the most expensive trim levels.

The front seats are made roomy and comfortable for passengers and drivers of any size, and have a good range of adjustments. The back row is distinguished by soft filling and shapelessness, allowing three people to sit here with maximum comfort. And on expensive trim levels, the seat backs can tilt within 8 degrees.

Interior

The trunk of the new Toyota remains the same huge, capable of accommodating a couple of people. There is a little more space in the rear area of the cabin, and there was enough of it before. The rear seats are very comfortable, the backrests are adjustable, it feels like the car was made not for the driver, but for the passenger in the back.

The wide rear folding armrest has a spacious glove compartment and a remote control for the rear window blind and door curtains, climate control in the rear zone, and heated sofa. A test drive of a Toyota Camry showed high comfort for passengers in this part of the cabin.

The interior of the driver's area has improved, wood-look inserts are no longer irritating to the eyes, and the color scheme has become softer and more natural. The center console houses a color display and a unit that controls the climate in the front zone and multimedia control. The control buttons were specially increased in size to make them easier to access when switching while moving.

The downside for manufacturers is the American clock on the front panel in a 12-hour format.

Tests have shown that the dashboard looks modern with two dials and one small display providing information from the on-board computer. All this is no longer with green, as before on the 2012 or 2013 model, but with a calm bluish backlight.

Toyota Camry models from 1990 to 2000

From 1991 to 1998, there were several Toyota Camry models in parallel. Small-sized models V30 and V40 were produced for the Japanese market. And the American buyer was offered larger cars, the XV10 and XV20, with a modified design.

V30 body for Japan

The 3rd generation of the legendary Japanese sedan was produced from 1990 to 1994. This body is notable for the new options that have appeared. The most expensive trim levels included a driver airbag and ABS. Also in the expensive Camry V30, the developers installed rear wheel steering (4WS). At the same time, there was a significant price gap between the basic and top configurations.

Camry V30

Different engines were available for the V30:

  • 1.8 petrol 4S-FE 115 hp;
  • petrol 2.0 3S-FE 135 (140) horses;
  • 2.0 petrol 3S-GE 165 horsepower.

A turbocharged diesel engine, 2C-T, was also installed, producing 91 horsepower.

The black Camry is a classic. V30 facelift

As before, buyers had access to all-wheel drive and two transmissions: 5 manual transmission and 4 automatic transmission. The automatic transmission could operate in winter and sports mode.

The V30 model was restyled in the summer of 1992. After it, the GT package was replaced by a touring package. The list of options for this option included original R15 alloy wheels, a spoiler, foglights, a leather steering wheel, and two-way steering wheel adjustment.

Model Toyota Camry V40

The creation of the fourth generation Toyota Camry was accompanied by a serious economic crisis in the land of the rising sun. In this regard, the developers focused on the practicality of all V40 trim levels.

Camry V40

The power plants of the V40 generation were inherited from the previous V30 model (petrol 1.8 4S-FE, 2.0 3S-FE). Only the diesel engine has changed; instead of the 2.0 2C-T, a 2.2 3C-T (with a power of 90 hp) was installed.

Independent, MacPherson-type spring suspension was installed front and rear. Improved four-wheel maneuverability of the Camry V40 was achieved through the use of the 4WS system.

The 1996 V40 update affected the optics; they became more modern. Also available in the middle trim levels: wood trim, airbags, ABS, remote control key and leather steering wheel.

Body for America XV10 1991 - 1996

Camry, designated XV10, appeared in the United States in 1991 and was sold in three body styles: sedan, station wagon and coupe. The wheelbase of the car was increased to 2620 mm, the length of the body was 4725 mm, and the width was 1770 mm.

Camry XV10. Sedan and station wagon.

The American version of the XV10 was equipped only with gasoline engines: 2.2 5S-FE 125 (130) hp, 3.0 3VZ-FE 185 horses, and after an update in 1994 - 3.0 1MZ-FE 188 horsepower. There were 2 gearboxes - 5 manual transmission and 4 automatic transmission.

Camry XV10 coupe

Standard safety features included a driver's airbag, front seat belts with load limiters, adjustable head restraints, and anti-lock and traction control systems. For an additional fee, the XV10 was equipped with cruise control and an airbag for the front passenger.

XV20 – the fifth generation of the Japanese sedan

The XV20 model appeared in 1996, replacing the first Camry XV10 wide body. But in Japan, the XV 20 was called the Toyota Camry Gracia until 1998, because at the same time a “narrow” version of the V40 was produced.

Camry XV20

In the fifth generation cars, the interior design was completely changed. The interior used high-quality plastic with wooden inserts. The instrument panel was harmoniously combined with the interior. The level of sound insulation in the cabin was not satisfactory. A comfortable position behind the wheel has been designed for the driver. The steering column and lumbar support were adjustable.

The gasoline engines used in the fifth generation Camry sedan were made in two variations: four-cylinder 2.2 5S-FE with a power of 140 hp. and V6 2.5 2MZ-FE, producing 200 horses. This body, like the XV10, did not offer diesel engines. But in the Japanese market, the XV20 retained all-wheel drive in some trim levels.

Camry XV20 feed

The V6 2.5 2MZ-FE petrol engine was not offered on the global market for the fifth generation XV20. Instead, the cars were equipped with an older internal combustion engine - V6 3.0 1MZ-FE (194 hp). Also available to buyers was a four-cylinder 2.2 5S-FE with 131 hp.

Image in an especially large size: test drive of Toyota Land Cruiser 200 TRD

The monitor of the multimedia system is docked to the “tidy” (which one no longer dares to call such), creating the full impression of a common screen.

The image displayed on it, at the request of the driver and front passenger, can be divided into two parts. Such a touch from the “premium”.

By poking your finger at this “smartphone”, you can completely customize the car for yourself, use the multimedia capabilities of the Bose audio system (“it rocks” - very much!), and also deal with a whole set of “individualizations”. Including lighting on the doors - 64 colors. The system can be forced to change them independently, depending on the driving mode.

By the way, I was amused by the shape of the automatic transmission selector handle (the arsenal includes either a 6-speed or a more modern 8-speed automatic).

Here it was stylized as an airplane engine control lever - the throttle in the pilot's cockpit. Near it there was a “puck” for switching the car’s driving modes - from the vegetable “eco” to the peppy “sport”.

Another pleasant thing is that the K5 now has a heated windshield, which was not present on the Optima. The luxurious Webasto panoramic sunroof on the entire roof did not “eat up” part of the height of the cabin, and even provided passengers with beautiful views, not to mention rapid ventilation of the cabin at any speed. In addition, due to the lack of sunlight in our latitudes, a “panorama” will come in very handy - both for health and for mood.

But rear riders should rejoice at the changes in the dimensions of the D1 class sedan in the KIA line. As mentioned above, the wheelbase of the car increased by 45 mm, to 4905 mm, the trunk volume remained at the Optima level - more than 500 liters. That is, from lengthening the car, first of all, the knees of the rear riders benefited.

I don’t know who it is, but to me the back seat of the K5 seemed as spacious as in the Skoda Superb, which is considered one of the trendsetters in the class in this regard.

But I was surprised by the strangeness. Koreans seem to have been so carried away by beauty and style that they have forgotten about the smallest but necessary detail for comfort in the back.

They provided a couple of USB connectors for the people who found themselves here, but forgot the banal knob for adjusting the intensity of air flow from the climate system deflectors.

Competitors of Toyota Camry 40th body

Thanks to its elegant and easily recognizable exterior, the Camry in the 40th body has gained a certain reputation. Therefore, one of the model’s main competitors on the market, Nissan Teana, was in less demand, although it outperformed the Camry in terms of equipment. The same can be said about the Kia Magentis and Hyundai Sonata, more profitable, but South Korean, and therefore not so popular.

Another rival is the Opel Insignia, which, despite its smaller size, is also well equipped. However, it cannot truly compete with the Camry - due to a less spacious interior and worse dynamics.

Engine and gearbox

With engines and transmissions, the “magpie” has everything at the highest level. Engine volume 2.4 2AZ-FE 167hp. (gasoline, like the larger one) could be coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission with the same number of gears (U250E). With these combinations, reliability problems are very rare and are caused more by high mileage or improper maintenance than by a manufacturing miscalculation. This engine provides the Toyota Camry 2008 with decent dynamics in the city and on the highway. For a long and trouble-free life of the power unit and transmission, you need to change the oil in them in a timely manner, and they will continue to drive and drive.

Engine 2.4 2AZ-FE

More powerful V6 3.5 liter engine 277hp. 2GR-FE was paired only with a 6-speed automatic (U660E). This pair has problems with the automatic transmission: it is not designed for long-term aggressive driving, constant abrupt starts from a standstill, and with such merciless use, the powerful motor breaks its own box.

Camry XV40 fuel consumption

Both engines have acceptable appetite. The 2.4 engine consumes on average 10 l/100 km, consuming 13.5 in the city, and 7.8 l/100 km on the highway, which is quite low even by modern standards. Oddly enough, the manufacturer claims the same average fuel consumption of 10 l/100 km for the larger power unit, while the V6 3.5 consumes 14.1 liters of fuel in the city, and on the highway its appetite is 7.4. Such low figures are explained by the fact that the larger Camry XV 40 engine is equipped with a transmission with a large number of gears.

Body and equipment

The paintwork scratches and chips quite easily. This is especially noticeable on the “noble” black color. But bare metal does not rust. Even on the Camry V40 from the first years of production there should be no corrosion. If there is, this is a clear sign of poor-quality body repair.

In total, the Camry 40 had 5 standard trim levels. But even the basic R1 (Comfort) was well equipped:

  • dual-zone climate control;
  • 4 airbags (front + side);
  • leather multifunction steering wheel and adjustable steering column;
  • standard radio with six speakers and CD changer;
  • fog lights and full power accessories (windows, mirrors);
  • the only configuration with a manual transmission.

R2 (Comfort+) features a five-speed automatic transmission and headlight washers. The R3 (Elegance) added leather upholstery and parking sensors. But the R4 (Prestige) is more interesting: VSC stability control system, xenon and cruise control. All configurations mentioned above were supplied with a 2.4 liter petrol engine.

The top-end R5 (Luxe) was only paired with a 3.5-liter engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. Among the “goodies”: electric rear seat backs, a curtain on the rear window and wooden inserts on the steering wheel.

Characteristics

Now we should note the technical ones. In the basic version, buyers will own a unit that allows them to save on fuel. In other words, the standard model has a 4-cylinder unit rated at 2 HP.

The base model will have 150 hp. At the same time, the car will reach a maximum speed of 202 km/h. Thanks to the reduced weight and the use of an updated power unit, fuel consumption is reduced.

The dimensions were discussed above, now it’s worth understanding other passport data:

  1. curb weight of the car is 1530 kg and 1615 kg, depending on the engine;
  2. total weight – 2100 kg;
  3. ground clearance - 160 mm. While the clearance for Europe is 145 mm;
  4. on all versions 6-speed is installed. automatic transmission;
  5. front wheel drive;
  6. independent McPherson suspension;
  7. the entire brake system is disc;
  8. the average consumption will be 7.5 liters.

These are all the main characteristics of the 2021 Toyota Camry that you will need to study before purchasing. Thanks to the independent suspension and good brakes, driving is very comfortable and safe.

Production of the model has begun, and it will be produced until 2021.

Simple, strict style

Toyota Camry dimensions, weight and ground clearance

The design of the car looks simple, Toyota has never been an innovator in the field of appearance, competitors are more beautiful. There are narrow headlights, directed downwards, equipped with halogen or xenon lamps. The rounded shapes of the Camry's hood flow like lines towards the strict radiator grille, which in the restyling is covered with chrome.

The bumper is equipped with optics washers and fog lights recessed at the bottom. Restyling brought a slightly different bumper with PTF in a chrome trim.

On the side there are powerful massive forms with a slight swelling of the arches. The business-class image is supported by chrome window surrounds and a straight line leading to the rear lights. The rear lights are identical in shape to the front ones. The trunk lid has a raised shape, creating a powerful image together with the massive bumper.

It was the concentration of design on rigor that pleased officials, who are the main consumers of the model. The car looks simple, but is relatively luxurious.

The dimensions of the sedan have grown:

  • length – 4815 mm;
  • width – 1820 mm;
  • height – 1480 mm;
  • wheelbase – 2775 mm;
  • ground clearance - 160 mm.

Troubles awaiting you in the salon

In the interior of the CB40, the fabric upholstery after 20 thousand mileage became thinner and began to shine, and by that time the leather covering was covered with small cracks. Over the course of about two years, the covering of the buttons peeled off and the steering wheel and gear selector began to become very shiny. After restyling the Toyota Camry ACV40, the quality of the coating has improved and it lasts longer.

After a relatively short time, creaks are heard inside the cabin and “crickets” appear - they populate the front panel, center console, hatch mechanism and armrest of far from old cars and it is useless to fight them. Try to clean the Toyota Camry ACV40 air conditioning system and drain pipe annually to prevent the smell of swamp rot from appearing in the cabin. At the latest, after five years of active operation of the air conditioner, if white flakes appear on the front panel, you will have to replace the aluminum evaporator of the air conditioning system with a copper one.

Electrics

Initially, the electrical wiring was laid with a safety margin. But due to the popularity of the model among car thieves, the Camry XV40 is often additionally equipped with one or even several alarm systems. And the extent of the Camry’s electrical problems directly depends on the degree of “handicraft” of the installers.

When inspecting, be sure to pay attention to how the additional wiring is laid under the hood and in the cabin, look under the front panel. If you find sloppy twists of wires and a bunch of electrical tape, it won’t hurt to undergo additional computer diagnostics of the car.

Among the “innate” electrical weaknesses are the generator and the air conditioning compressor. If the first one is restored for pennies, then replacing the compressor will cost several hundred dollars.

By the way, it wouldn’t hurt to check the cooling system for dandruff. If white flakes are blowing out of the air ducts when the air conditioner is running, then you need to prepare to replace the air conditioner evaporator. The replacement labor may cost more than the evaporator itself.
