New Toyota Camry 2021 body

The eighth generation Camry XV70 is built on the new modular architecture TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). The transition to a new architecture, according to the manufacturer, allows “to apply advanced engineering solutions and create more comfortable, reliable and safe cars.” The Camry uses a variant of the GA-K platform, which also powers the Avalon, Lexus ES and RAV4. When creating the body, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels are used. This made it possible to reduce body weight by 25%, while increasing body torsional rigidity by 30%. To lighten the car and lower the center of gravity, the hood was made of aluminum, and underneath there was a power strut between the supports of the front struts. Laser welding is used in body assembly.

The 2019-2020 Camry body design is completely new. The car has become a little longer and wider, but at the same time lower, the front and rear pillars have a greater slope. The style is a bit like the sixth generation Camry in the XV40 body. All changes in appearance can be seen in the photo.

The American market offers two front end design options - “sporty” and more “executive”. For us, only the “executive” version with a spectacular mouth with horizontal ribs is provided.

The headlights are all LED - low and high beam, daytime running lights, fog lights, turn signal. Only in simple versions the front turn signals and rear lights have incandescent lamps (starting with Prestige Safety, the rear lights are also LED).

The side mirrors are large, electrically adjustable, electrically folding and turn signal repeaters in the housing.

In the 2021 model year, the S-Edition package, which received two-tone body paint, bumper trims with red accents, a spoiler on the trunk lid, 18″ specially designed wheels and S-Edition emblems on the body.

Toyota Camry is traditionally offered only with a 4-door sedan body. Its length is 4885 mm, width is 1840 mm, height is 1455 mm. Wheelbase 2825 mm (+50 mm compared to its predecessor).

Despite the fact that the body itself has become lighter, the curb weight of the car has increased slightly compared to its predecessor. Toyota Camry 2021 Engine and Transmission

In our market, only gasoline engines are offered for the new model. Two of them, time-tested 4-cylinder engines, were inherited from the new product from its predecessor. The design has a mechanism for adjusting the valve timing at the intake and exhaust, distributed fuel injection. These engines are combined with the same proven, but improved for the new model, 6-speed automatic transmissions. Also offered for Russia is a new 3.5-liter V6, which is combined with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive.

New for the Camry, the automatic transmission now has eight speeds, a new torque converter and a lock-up clutch. The box creates a different impression of acceleration and traction control; the torque converter began to lock up earlier. Situations when you need to accelerate, press the pedal, there is no traction, then a jerk are a thing of the past. 8-automatic transmission shifts are logical, predictable and understandable.

2021 Toyota Camry Suspension, Brakes and Wheels

A completely new suspension has been developed for the GA-K platform. The front is independent, with McPherson struts, the rear is independent, multi-link.

The new suspension strikes a good balance between handling and ride quality. For the sake of a lower center of gravity, they even reduced the ground clearance to 155 mm (-10 mm). The Camry copes with minor irregularities nobly, although as the speed increases, road irregularities make their way into the cabin more noticeably. The suspension is energy-intensive and, in general, superior to its competitors in terms of smoothness. When you go too fast in a corner, all four wheels begin to slide predictably.

The steering is much sharper and more responsive, with linear reactive action. The electric power steering is now located on the steering rack rather than on the shaft.

The brakes are disc brakes on both axles, ventilated at the front. The braking distance from a speed of 100 km/h to a complete stop is less than 37 meters. The basic configuration already includes ABS, brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BAS).

Camry, depending on the version, is equipped with 16, 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels. Each wheel size has its own design. Tire sizes are 205/65 R16, 215/55 R17 and 235/45 R18, respectively. A full-size wheel with an alloy disc is used as a spare wheel.

The controls for dual-zone climate control (already standard) are located slightly lower.

The central tunnel, in addition to the leather-trimmed gear lever, has a pair of cup holders, a niche for wireless smartphone charging (an option for initial versions), and an electronic parking brake button. Large central armrest with leather trim.

The instrument panel with two analog gauges is easy to read, all thanks to the white backlight and optimal fonts. Between the speedometer and tachometer, depending on the version, there is a 4" or 7" high-resolution color screen. The most expensive version of Executive Safety has a head-up dashboard on the windshield.

The steering wheel with function buttons has been slightly smaller. Using the buttons on the steering wheel you can control the audio system, cruise control, and receive calls. For the Russian market, all versions, even the basic one, have a leather steering wheel. Almost all versions have mechanical tilt and reach adjustments; only the Executive Safety version has an electric drive. The heated steering wheel starts with the Elegance Safety version.

The front seats are soft, with a wide cushion and not the most pronounced lateral support. The range of adjustments is very high, even tall drivers will be able to sit comfortably, despite the fact that the seats themselves are installed lower. In the basic versions, the adjustments are mechanical, but starting from the Classic version, electric adjustment of the driver's seat in 8 directions and lumbar support adjustment for the driver are available. Depending on the version, the seats are available in fabric, dark or light leather. Heated front seats are already included in the base. Ventilation is available only for the richest configuration.

The rear sofa is also installed lower than its predecessor. There is enough room for the knees and above the head - after all, the base has increased by 5 cm. But there could be more space for the feet, especially if a tall person is sitting in front, who has lowered the chair to the lowest possible position. The central tunnel significantly steals space for the middle passenger. The back of the sofa is adjustable in tilt. There is a folding armrest with two cup holders, ventilation deflectors above the central tunnel and two sockets. In simple versions, the back of the sofa folds in a 40/60 ratio. The expensive Luxury Safety and Executive Safety versions offer two separate rear seats with electric backrest tilt. They fold in a 40/20/40 ratio. For these versions, the reclining armrest is equipped with a control unit with touch buttons for controlling 3-zone climate control, audio system, reclining and heating.

Noise insulation is good - the Camry is quiet at city speeds. As speed increases, noise from tires and wind appears in the area of ​​the center pillar and side mirrors. The version with the 3.5 engine feels quieter, since the younger versions need to be “twisted” more often to high speeds.

The “Winter Pack” includes the following functions:

The bright interior looks impressive

The buttons on the steering wheel are pleasant to the touch and fit well; on the center console there are neat buttons for heated seats, and not huge, ridiculous ones, like in the previous body. The block of keys to the left of the steering wheel has changed. Tactile sensations have become much better.

The steering wheel has a smaller diameter. Cruise control is controlled by buttons on the steering wheel, rather than by a lever underneath it. The instrument panel is simpler and clearer, a step up from the XV55. The bright blue illumination of the speedometer and tachometer is a thing of the past; the classic white “tidy” is an undeniable plus.

The radio control buttons are located on the driver's side, so you don't have to reach for it. The climate control control unit has acquired “knobs” for adjusting the temperature, more convenient than the buttons that were in the Camry 55. The automatic transmission selector of the Camry 70 is in a leather case with a direct stroke and a locking button. On the Russian market, in all trim levels of the Camry 2021, the steering wheel and gear selector are trimmed with genuine leather.

The seats remain comfortable and soft, but the lateral support is well equipped, now it is able to hold the driver in sharp turns.

Second row and trunk

There is a little less space in the second row of the Camry 2021, more on that below. The sofa is now more profiled, it is not as elastic and hard as on German cars, but also not as soft as before. In rich trim levels, control of the radio, adjustment of the rear row seats, and heating are controlled by touch buttons located in the armrest.

The trunk of the Camry XV70 has decreased slightly in volume. Was 506 liters, became 493 liters in cars without backrest angle adjustment. If the rear bench is adjustable, the trunk volume will be even less than 469 liters. The shape of the trunk is now more regular, the hinges are hidden in plastic covers, and the shelf between the cargo compartment and the spare tire is flimsy.

Many dissatisfied people - disadvantages

There are a lot of negative reviews on the Internet, which agree on one conclusion - a strong decline in quality. Starting from the body, the metal is easily dented, as if made of “foil”. The same applies to the interior, for example, the central tunnel can be shaken with your hands, or after six months the leather upholstery or supposedly wooden inserts can lose their presentation.

The car has never been the quietest, but here on the highway there is often a whistle from the mirrors and a lot of noise coming from the wheel arches. In winter, many have encountered the creaking of the Camry windshield, which rubs against the plastic clips of the dashboard. Dealers, after contacting us, simply remove the clips, which turn out to have no technical benefit - strange.

An unfortunate bias towards handling reduced the expected comfort from the eighth generation. Greater smoothness was expected. It was not possible to get the car to steer; understeer remained.

The installation of old engines is upsetting, yes, they performed well, but I would like something new. Also surprising is the pricing of spare parts, which in some places is ahead of the Germans. A headlight, for example, costs 200 thousand rubles.
