Leather steering wheel for TOYOTA Yaris, Vios, RAV4

Natural is always good. It is much more pleasant to feel the “breathing” non-slip material in your hands than dead slippery plastic. The steering wheel is made of wood, this is more a tribute not to convenience (it is slippery), but an indicator of status. And all-wood steering wheels have long been no longer installed on premium cars; they only have wooden inserts. Cheap wooden steering wheels “a la plywood” are not even worth considering for fans of collective farm tuning.

The skin is another matter. It looks good, doesn’t slip, is easy to wash and clean, and lasts a long time. It would be nice if the steering wheel was covered in leather from the factory. And if not? Then this can be corrected by contacting a specialized workshop. But there it will cost about $50 (in our outback, in decent cities, I think, it’s more expensive), you’ll have to remove the steering wheel, etc.

You can cover the steering wheel with leather yourself. Ready-made kits are sold for this purpose. The result will be no worse than in a specialized workshop, you won’t have to remove the steering wheel and all this will cost about $20. I have already covered two (corrected 10/18/17: already three!) steering wheels with leather myself and I can say with confidence that there is nothing complicated about it, anyone can do it.

It is important to buy the right set, specifically for your steering wheel type. There are universal sets, they are cheaper, but they do not fit the steering wheel spokes and look worse.

I bought this set for my friend. I bought it through the mobile app at a discount.

As a result, I received a rather crumpled box in the mail.

In it you can see all the workers of the Chinese post office, then ours, jumping in turn.

It’s good that there was nothing to break in the parcel.

Inside there is a blank for covering the steering wheel.

The skin is thin, 1.3-1.5 mm. The area where the hands are is perforated.

The lines are even. The threads seem strong. Everything looks very good.

In places where the leather is tucked under the central overlay, the leather is thinned.

There is a label with hieroglyphs on the inside. Probably Chinese Quality Control Department...

There is also a bag with accessories: a roll of thin double-sided tape, a device for stuffing leather into the cracks between the steering wheel joints and the central part with the airbag, two spools of thread, a needle and a “thimble.”

It’s a stretch to call this corrugated ring a thimble, but it’s nice that they took care and included at least something.

Also in the box there are color instructions in Russian with pictures.

Quite understandable and well written.

I did not film the wrapping process itself. There is no point in this. All photos and drawings are in the instructions, nothing new. And there was little time, it was raining and I didn’t want to be distracted by filming during the process.

I will describe the process in a couple of sentences.

1. Disconnect the battery. During operation, the central part of the steering wheel is constantly touched and the sound signal will constantly turn on.

2. The steering wheel must be degreased. Firstly, disinfection will not be superfluous, but most importantly, if you do not degrease it, the double-sided tape may not stick to it.

What is tape used for? The instructions say to glue it around the edges of the braid blank. It is needed to fix the edges when stitching and so that the braid does not scroll later on the steering wheel rim. Therefore, its presence is not necessary, but desirable. We glue the tape, do not remove the protective paper on the second side yet.

3. We stretch the braid blank onto the steering wheel. The skin stretches and fits quite tightly. Now you can center the braid, then peel off the paper from the double-sided tape and secure everything.

4. Next, we follow the instructions: fix the thread with the first stitches and pull it through the loops in the lines along the edges of the workpiece. Pull through one loop on each side. It is important here not to pull too hard so that the seam is even. At the end we fix the thread. It’s not written in the instructions, but it’s quite logical to stitch it (pull it through the loops) and in the opposite direction. This makes it both stronger (the leather is better and more evenly stretched) and more beautiful (the seam is even and symmetrical, just like from the factory).

5. After all the stitches are sewn, using the yellow tool, the edges of the leather blank are wrapped in the gap between the knitting needles and the central pad. The skin in these places is thinner, it is pre-sanded and this is not at all difficult.

6. We examine the results of the work and enjoy the new beautiful appearance of the steering wheel and the pleasant sensations from touching it.

Conclusion: The set is of quite high quality, well made and includes everything you might need. It’s just important not to make a mistake and choose exactly the set that fits your steering wheel.

At the moment, the Chinese have raised the price. But quite by accident I ended up with exactly the same set (I bought it for a friend, and for some reason the steering wheel in the car turned out to be slightly different, pre-restyling). I don’t need this set now and I would sell it at the price I bought it for, $20. I’m ready to send it by mail or my friends visit the Mitinsky market in Moscow every week.
