Many experts are still arguing which class this car belongs to. It has some features from a sedan, and some from an SUV, but it cannot be attributed to either one or the other type. After the latest restyling came out, the car more or less decided on its position in the market - a crossover. Toyota Harrier 2021 has grown significantly in size, which makes it possible to transport passengers with a higher level of comfort, has improved slightly in equipment and has become a little more powerful.
Appearance
The exterior of the car was quite atypical for a Japanese company. There are no branded parts here that can be used to identify, without a badge, that this is a Toyota.
The front part of the car turned out to be quite short. It is crowned with a flat hood, which is significantly inclined towards the ground. Directly below it is an unusual radiator grille - a thin strip filled with many vertical stripes painted in chrome. From the edges of the air intake, lines of stylish optics with budget content extend in different directions.
But still, the main cooling is located a little lower - on the body kit. There is a trapezoidal air intake located here, occupying a fairly large area. In the lower corners of the photo you can see very tiny fog lights, and in the side cutouts of the bumper, designed for cooling the brakes, there are strips of additional low beam.
From the side, the new model looks like a typical crossover - a rounded roof, a wavy relief over the entire area, as well as other decorative elements. In this modification, the car received new door handles, slightly redesigned mirrors and a modified sill, finished in chrome.
There were some changes at the back too. Here, the new body is complemented by a massive visor, edging almost the entire perimeter of the trunk door glass. In the very center you can see a new rectangular optic, connected to each other by a thin strip of stoppacks. Brake lights can also be seen on the body kit, which is additionally reinforced with metal inserts. Directly below it is a single exhaust pipe.
Salon
The inside of the car has changed much more than the outside. The new Toyota Harrier 2021 model year now boasts a beautiful dashboard design, high-quality materials used for finishing, as well as modern multimedia.
On the dashboard there is not much space allocated for the console. But this did not stop the designers from placing many useful elements here, such as a huge multimedia system monitor, several rows of buttons surrounding it, as well as a gear shift knob. Due to the latest decision, the tunnel began to take up very little space, since only holes for things and glasses, as well as an armrest, remained on it.
The steering wheel equipment can also please the buyer. Here you can always find a bunch of elements that make it easy to manage both multimedia and assistants. And the steering wheel itself turned out to be quite pleasant both in appearance and to the touch. The dashboard looks laconic, but its functionality does not suffer from this. The sensors here include the traditional speedometer and tachometer. Between them is a large on-board computer monitor.
Specifications
For the Toyota Harrier 2021, two power plants have been prepared - one hybrid and one traditional, the characteristics of which vary depending on various modifications and the fuel used. The first has a volume of 2.5 liters and its power is 152 horsepower. It always comes with a CVT transmission and all-wheel drive. The regular engine has a volume of 2 liters. If a diesel engine is used, its power is 210 horsepower. The set of drives and gearboxes is identical to the hybrid. For gasoline, everything is much more interesting. The power here can be either 151 or 231 hp, and the transmission in both cases is either automatic, with six gears, or CVT. Front-wheel drive is also added to all-wheel drive. As the test drive showed, each version has relatively low consumption and good dynamics.
Toyota Harrier 2017-2018 dimensions and appearance
According to the classification of the Economic Commission for Europe, the Toyota Harrier XU60 2017-2018 belongs to Segment J (Sport utility, “SUVs”). Its dimensions (L x W x H) are 4720 x 1835 x 1690 mm.
Many experts call the appearance of the 2013 Harrier XU60 controversial, comparing it with the third generation Highlander. Those accustomed to classic European design may be surprised by the wide, flattened “muzzle” with a large decorative nameplate depicting a diving bird of prey.
There is one interesting misconception associated with the bird on the emblem. Many car enthusiasts who speak foreign languages, but do not know the history of the model, translate its name “harrier” as “hound”. The attacking bird on the nameplate is mistaken for a falcon.
In fact, the word "harrier" has other meanings besides hound dog. The Harrier is also an eastern marsh harrier, a bird of the accipitrid family native to northern Japan and revered by the local population. In addition to the decorative decal, the outline of a hunting bird holding its wings in a V shape inspired Toyota's front panel lines. It can also be seen in the interior in the shape of the instrument panel.

Toyota Harrier 2017-2018 test drive video
In the 2000s, Toyota introduced the Harrier crossover. It was almost exactly the same as the Lexus RX. When Lexus became a separate brand, Harrier received its own design, chassis from the RAV4, powertrains, equipment and began to conquer the automotive market. Toyota periodically updates its model range, and in 2018 the Harrier became much safer, acquired the Style Mauve package and the most modern and technologically advanced equipment.
So far, this “predator” in a hybrid modification is available only to the Japanese - the car has not yet been presented on the Russian market. However, we can already see what the manufacturer offers us. So, what does the 2021 Toyota Harrier boast of?
A little about the history of the model
The Harrier crossover appeared in the model line of the Japanese company Toyota in 1997. The first generation of the model with the factory index XU10 was produced from 1997 to 2003. The second generation of the XU30 crossover debuted in 2003 and was produced until mid-2013. By the way, the first two generations of the stylish Urban SUV of the Japanese brand were a clone of the premium crossover Lexus RX. However, the third generation Toyota Harrier in 2013 (factory index XU60) became related to the fourth generation Toyota RAV4 compact crossover. In 2021, Ferret (the model’s affectionate nickname) underwent restyling. And so, in the spring of 2020, I waited for a successor. The new Toyota Harrier is also closely related to the Toyota RAV4, but, of course, it is a new, 5th generation. Both models are based on the modern TNGA (GA-K) platform.
Exterior and dimensions
The updated Harrier is completely different from its predecessor. It acquired a front bumper with vertical strokes of LED DRLs, fairly large air intakes, an aerodynamic body kit and a radiator grille made of transparent plastic. One of the features is LED headlights with moving turn signals and LED fog lights. In addition, the Toyota Harrier 2107 now has rear marker lights, which are connected by an LED strip and have three-dimensional graphics.
The car is available in six color options: snow white, dark red, metallic silver, blue and two shades of black.
The body length of the Toyota Harrier has increased by 5 mm, otherwise the parameters have not changed:
- body length – 4,725 m;
- body width – 1.835 mm;
- height – 1.69 m;
- disc diameter – 17-18 inches;
- the distance between the axles is 2.66 m.
Bright body design
The new Harrier has acquired an original and bright body. The designers awarded the new product a modern and stylish appearance with a touch of sport. The front part of the body is solid and powerful. The main details are high-mounted narrowed full LED headlights and a solid bumper with a huge false radiator grille in the manner of Lexus models. However, there is no complete similarity, and the Harrier crossover looks less extravagant from the front.
From the side, the body of the new generation of urban crossover demonstrates all modern attributes. There is a moderately long hood and a domed roof. Curvy body panels and circular wheel arches. Compact side glazing and charismatic surface relief. Solid, but by no means heavy food.
The rear part of the body looks the most harmonious and interesting. In the arsenal of the stern there is a tailgate with a strongly angled glass topped with a spoiler. Luxurious LED side lighting, stretching out like a narrow ribbon across the entire width of the body. A solid bumper with powerful plastic, complemented by stylish decor and a bifurcated exhaust system.
The external body dimensions of the new fourth generation 2021 Toyota Harrier are 4740 mm long, 1855 mm wide, 1660 mm high, with a 2690 mm wheelbase and 195 mm ground clearance. The front wheel track is 1605 mm, the rear wheel track is 1625 mm.
The crossover is equipped by default with large 19-inch wheels (alloy wheels and tires size 225/55 R19.
The manufacturer paints the body of the new product in one of 7 muted colors. In the photo in our review, the new Harrier is presented in a Precious Black Pearl suit.
Interior
To decorate the interior of the new crossover with a panoramic roof and sunroof, new, higher quality materials of different color options were used (leather of different textures, aluminum and carbon fiber inserts). As an additional option, the buyer can order a modern multimedia system with a touch screen enlarged to 9.2″ (versus 7 inches in the previous generation model). In the arsenal of the media system:
- USB/AUX ports;
- drive for DVD/Blu-ray discs;
- built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules;
- voice command recognition.
The driver and passenger seats are equipped with electric adjustments and ventilation. Heating is provided for all seats, including the second row. The tailgate also has an electric drive and a contactless opening function.
Standard equipment includes:
- interior lighting in the background;
- a special lining under the driver’s lower back to relieve fatigue and make the seat more comfortable;
- retractable armrest between the front seats;
- access to the car without using a key.
Specifications
The crossover is available in several variations: with a two-liter engine producing 231 hp. With. and 151 l. With. The first turbocharged engine works in conjunction with a 6-speed automatic transmission and consumes fuel in the amount of 8 l/100 km. The second engine was inherited from the Toyota Harrier 2021 from its predecessor and is equipped with a continuously variable option. All-wheel drive is available for an additional fee for both systems.
The third version of the Harrier is a hybrid. The model has a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors. According to the manufacturer, fuel consumption for this version is minimal and is less than 5 l/100 km.
