Winter and summer tires for Prado 120: which is better

Rules for choosing tires

To maintain the outer diameter, they follow the rule of reducing the height and increasing the width by 10 when using wheels 1 inch larger. Owners of the Prado 120 talk about the possibility of installing 17-inch wheels size 275/65 and 18-inch wheels 275/60 and 265/65. In addition, you need to take into account the disc offset.

So, for wide tires you will need wheels with a shelf. They will prevent the inside of the wheel from coming into contact with the skid plate when turning. In addition, on wide wheels the car reacts more to ruts, but this also depends on which tires are better in ruts on the Prado 120

The following describes the features of individual tires based on tests and reviews.

What tires to buy for off-road

When choosing off-road tires, take into account the prevailing type of surface. In addition, soft off-road tires wear out intensively during road use.

Rubber Features:

  • MT-764 BIGHORN. It performs well on various surfaces and is easy to etch. It is quiet on the road and wears out quickly. Suitable for off-season use.
  • DynaPro ATM RF10. It has good performance both on asphalt and off-road. Reliable on wet and dry surfaces. Does not harden in the cold. Demonstrates average qualities on ice and in ruts.
  • Geolandar A/TS. Wear-resistant and not noisy, but does not perform well in ruts. Geolandar A/T G015 is quiet and provides good handling. Suitable for clay. Increases fuel consumption.
  • Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure. Suitable for asphalt and primer. It has good stability in corners, aquaplaning threshold and braking. Soft with a durable frame and sidewall. Noisy on asphalt.
  • Open Country A/T plus. Soft, quiet, inexpensive tires with good braking performance, ensuring a smooth ride. It wears out quickly and has a profile 2–2.5 mm smaller than stated.
  • Road venture KL78. Quiet, soft tire with good grip and self-cleaning ability. Suitable for wet roads, but performs poorly on wet clay, and the sidewall breaks in turns.
  • Dueler A/T 697. This is a tire with high cross-country ability and handling in mud and slush with a rigid sidewall and wear resistance.

Owners of the Prado 120 for off-road use recommend Dunlop AT3, Grandtrack, Bridgestone Dueler, Toyo Open Country, and Yokohama Geolander tires. Bridgestone is a quiet, wear-resistant tire with good cross-country ability. The Yokohama is good on mud and snow, but lacks grip on ice and packed snow and has a low hydroplaning threshold. At the same time, it is reliable on wet asphalt.

Details

And now in more detail for those who want to understand why I made this particular choice. I will describe in detail how I assessed each candidate, what sources I used, and what conclusions I reached.

Kumho Road Venture APT KL51 aka Marshal Road Venture APT KL51

I was able to find only 2 tests from the American publication “Consumer Reports” in which these tires participated. Judging by the fact that these tires are not present in European tests, they are not particularly popular in Europe.

Cost about 22,500 tenge*

  • Low price
  • Saves fuel
  • Average handling on wet asphalt
  • Average handling on dry asphalt
  • Slightly below average noise level
  • Poor wear resistance - tires wear out quickly
  • Test of tires for SUVs and off-road vehicles by the American organization “Consumer Reports” 2012 (13th place out of 20)
  • Consumer Reports 265/70 R17 SUV and Pickup Tire Test 2014 (15th out of 20)

Summer Bridgestone Ecopia EP850

Cost about 29,000 tenge*

This model entered the market relatively recently and has not yet been tested by independent companies. I can evaluate its quality only by the main parameters declared by the manufacturer, as well as by reviews from motorists.

  • Saves fuel
  • Low noise level
  • Good handling on wet and dry asphalt
  • Weak sidewall
  • It’s not clear what’s wrong with wear resistance
  • Promotional video for Bridgestone Ecopia EP850 from the manufacturer
  • Reviews (average rating 4.9, 12 reviews)

All-season Yokohama Geolandar H/TS G051

Cost about 34,000 tenge*

These tires are practically not present in the tests. The only adequate test where these tires participated was the test of the Australian independent organization “Choice” and Yokohama took 9th place out of 11. All indicators are below average, I won’t look for advantages and disadvantages, I’ll just skip this model.

  • Test of 225/60 R17 tires for compact crossovers by the Australian independent organization “Choice” 2012 (9th place out of 11)

Summer Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV

Cost about 29,000 tenge*

The tire is present in many European tests, so it is easy to identify advantages and disadvantages

  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Very low noise level
  • Saves fuel
  • Not bad off-road
  • Average handling on wet roads (it is worth noting that in a number of tests the handling is at a high level)
  • ADAC summer tire test for SUV size 215/65R16 2012 (3rd place out of 7)
  • Fresh test of summer tires size 215/65 R16 for SUV cars by the German magazine “Auto Zeitung” 2015 (1st place out of 9)
  • Test of 225/60 R17 tires for compact crossovers by the Australian independent organization “Choice” 2012 (2nd place out of 11)

All-season Pirelli Scorpion Verde

Cost about 31,500 tenge*

Although Pirelli has no such thing as all-season tires, the All Season label gives us the right to consider these tires all-season. According to our weather, this means that the tire can be used in spring, summer and autumn. Unfortunately, this model was only found in one tire test.

  • Excellent balance of all tire characteristics
  • Excellent handling on dry and wet roads
  • Quiet
  • Average ride comfort
  • Test of all-season tires for crossovers size 255/55R18 Tire Rack 2012 (1st place out of 3)

Conclusion

Based on the assessment of the disadvantages and advantages, I believe that the choice is obvious. Goodyear and Pirelli are head and shoulders above their competitors. There is of course the dark horse Bridgestone Ecopia EP850, but I think we need to give it time to appreciate its qualities. In the meantime, my choice is among Goodyear and Pirelli.

It is worth noting that all tests have different goals and are carried out with tires of different sizes, so the test results are not always suitable for our case, namely the choice of tires on the Prado for driving on asphalt. Nevertheless, Goodyear is a leader in almost all tests. Perhaps only Continental or new Michelin models can compete with them, but they are not on our market.

When choosing between Goodyear and Pirelli, I lean towards Goodyear. A little cheaper and more popular, otherwise they are approximately equal.

Which summer tires are best for the Prado 120?

According to the results of a review of tests, which is the best summer tire for the Prado 120, Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV and Pirelli Scorpion Verde are highlighted as good options:

  • EfficientGrip. They are characterized by wear resistance, low noise levels, efficiency, and good off-road qualities. Average ratings for handling on wet surfaces.
  • Scorpion Verde. The manufacturer positions this model as all-season. For local conditions, this means the possibility of use in summer, autumn, and spring in the absence of snow cover. These tires are characterized by balanced parameters, silence, and handling on wet and dry surfaces. Ride comfort lags behind the overall level of performance.
  • Geolandar H/TS G051. Demonstrated balanced below-average performance and fuel economy.
  • Road Venture APT KL51 / Marshal Road Venture APT KL51. It is characterized by low cost and fuel economy with average handling characteristics on wet and dry surfaces and noise levels. This rubber wears out quickly.
  • Latitude Cross. Provides controllability and smooth running, does not harden in the cold, but is noisy.
  • CL V2. It has decent braking and aquaplaning performance. Suitable for rocky surfaces. At the same time, it is unbalanced and noisy, but cheap.
  • GRANDTREK PT3. Balanced for the road: provides control and stability with a smooth ride. Works well on wet clay. Noisy.
  • NT420S. Good indicators of grip, aquaplaning threshold and stability on asphalt and soil. A bit noisy.
  • TR978. These are inexpensive, noisy tires with balanced parameters.
  • Bosco A/T. Reliable in mud and on wet roads.
  • Open Country U/T. Balanced, wear-resistant rubber.
  • Proxes ST III. A balanced tire with good stability, braking, noise and softness characteristics. Withstands loads. Suitable for sandy surfaces.
  • Open Country H/T. Road tires that cope with the first snow.
  • Ecopia EP850. Provides high levels of stability, drainage and controllability with low noise.
  • ContiCrossContact LX2. Quiet, comfortable tire with good maneuverability and stability. At the same time, it is heavy, with a soft sidewall, and dirt sticks.

Users note Dunlop 9000 Sport, Nitto Terra Grappler, Continental ContiCrossContact AT, Michelin Latitude Tour HP as the best summer tires for the Prado 120. According to the owners, with a speed index similar to asphalt tires, the second tires perform well off-road, including in sand and mud. In addition, they are quiet: noise begins to be heard at speeds of more than 150 km/h when driving on smooth asphalt (on rough asphalt - even quieter). Rutting is normal for this width with less roll compared to asphalt models. Softer options squeak in the heat.

All-season Coopers perform well on ice and snow, but are noisier on the highway than standard tires. Owners speak positively about the on- and off-road performance of the Kumho Road Venture A/T (with the exception of slippery surfaces). The BFG AT has a lower speed index, while the Cooper Discoverer ATR is inferior in cross-country ability. Continental is close to Nitto in terms of stiffness. Michelin, according to reviews, are suitable for road conditions. Owners also note Michelin Pilot, Latitude Cross, Dunlop AT22 (soft, quiet, handling, wear resistance, grip).

Choosing the best summer tires for the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for the city

Kazakhstan loves Pradik. It is powerful, has good maneuverability and at the same time comfortable. I decided to figure out which tires are best to install on the Prado in the summer in order to fully enjoy comfort.

Conditions: tires are selected for the summer season

, in the most common size
265/65 R17
, provided the vehicle is used - 95% asphalt roads and only occasionally light off-road, and it is also very important that the tires do not spoil the comfort that the Land Cruiser creates. And one more thing: we choose among what is available. Those. I will not talk about tires that are difficult to find on the Kazakh market.

So, for the summer season we are considering summer or all-season tires. Therefore, let’s look at what we have on the Kazakhstan market: Summer tires: /newtyres/summer/265/65/R17 All-season tires: /newtyres/allseason/265/65/R17

Discarding all AT/MT options, because we are only interested in “road” tires, we get approximately the following list of tires to choose from:

*At the time of writing and may change over time

If we want to maintain comfort, prevent noise from entering the car, and feel confident on wet and dry asphalt, then we immediately discard Chinese tires. Let's leave them to those who are in a difficult financial situation.

There are 6 brands left to choose from: Kumho, Yokohama, Bridgestone, Pirelli and Goodyear. To make a choice among these brands, I studied two dozen car tire tests. I drew most of my information from European tests by organizations such as ADAC, because they were not seen in “advertising tests”. I also studied the results of Russian tests, and one domestic one, but did not rely heavily on them, because I often noticed the advertising nature of such tests. And separately, I looked at the reviews for all candidates.

I note that all candidates are good

, all have good characteristics, and if I write that a tire has an average level of comfort, then this means average in relation to the compared models. But we still want to choose the best option!

Based on the results of the work done, I can highlight two best options: Summer Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV and All-Season Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season

Winter tires for Prado

All-season tires are not suitable for winter conditions in most of the CIS. In addition, in conditions of constant snow cover, studded tires are preferable:

  • Dynapro i'cept (RW08). A low-noise tire with good stability and grip on snow and ice, but lacking grip in tight corners.
  • i'Pike RW11 (RW11). Inexpensive, quiet and hard rubber that provides stability.
  • WinterCraft SUV Ice WS31. Balanced, quiet, soft, grippy rubber with a small number of deeply recessed studs.
  • NS3 Arctic Trekker. An inexpensive hard sidewall tire good for snow, mud and ice, but noisy, harsh and heavy on asphalt.
  • UltraGrip Ice SUV. An inexpensive tire with good acceleration and braking performance on snow, slush and ice and water drainage, but noisy during break-in.
  • UltraGrip Ice Arctic SUV. Provides traction on various surfaces, acceleration and braking. Good on snow, slush, ice. Remains soft in the cold. It exhibits lateral drift, noise on asphalt, and a low threshold for aquaplaning.
  • GRANDTREK ICE02. Inexpensive, soft, noisy tire with good handling on asphalt, ice and snow, grip and cross-country ability.
  • TR757. Inexpensive, soft rubber with decent grip and braking performance, but unbalanced and hardens in the cold.
  • Bosco Nordico. Inexpensive tires with good grip on ice and compacted snow and average grip on slush. At the same time, it is noisy and exhibits lateral slip on ice.
  • Winguard WinSpike SUV. Inexpensive, low-noise tire with good performance in various conditions, but with a narrow tread.
  • ICE ZERO FR. Unbalanced, quiet, durable rubber that provides grip and stability.
  • ICE ZERO. Inexpensive, noisy, soft tire with good grip in various conditions.
  • iceGUARD Stud IG65. Inexpensive, low noise, comfortable, wear-resistant tire that exhibits lateral slip when cornering.
  • HAKKAPELIITTA 9 SUV. Expensive tires with high handling, braking, and smooth ride on asphalt. Soft with firmly fixed thorns, insensitive to rutting. At the same time, it “floats” on dry asphalt and has low cross-country ability. Marriage occurs.
  • NORDMAN RS2 SUV. An inexpensive tire with decent braking, acceleration and cross-country ability. Does not harden in frost.
  • WR SUV 3. Provides good handling and smooth ride, but poor braking on ice.
  • HAKKAPELIITTA 8 SUV. Expensive, universal tires with good braking on asphalt and combined surfaces and do not fall off when traction is lost. At the same time, it is noisy, unbalanced, wears intensively on asphalt, with low handling on ice and braking on loose surfaces.
  • Bridgestone. Blizzak SPIKE-02 SUV. A tire with high levels of handling, stability and grip.
  • Blizzak DM-V2. Expensive, wear-resistant, low-noise tires, suitable for snow and asphalt.
  • Latitude Alpin 2. Expensive, quiet, soft tire with high handling and grip characteristics.

Owners of Prado 120 recommend Michelin X-Ice North, Nokian Nordman SUV, Hakkapelitta 7.
