It is clear that the actual ground clearance may vary depending on the load, but it is unlikely that Toyota people do not know basic things. But the measurements carried out by Drom show a different picture, surprisingly, better than the official one (usually the opposite is true). According to their data, the clearance is as follows:

  • to the muffler - 257 mm.


The results, as for a crossover, are quite decent; in its class, Toyota RAV 4 is among the leaders in this indicator. Many famous competitors make do with a much more modest ground clearance:

It is noteworthy that the latest model belongs to the brand of full-fledged and legendary SUVs, even if they offered more of a road version of the all-terrain vehicle. In any case, to the question “what is the ground clearance of the RAV 4?”, taking into account the range of the given data, one can answer “sufficient for most situations.”

Indeed, if you need a real crossover, and not a city one, that is, a car that combines the functionality of a car and an SUV, and the qualities of the latter should be noticeably expressed, and not slightly indicated, then the Toyota RAV 4 should be considered first.

Including because it has another important factor in increasing cross-country ability, all-wheel drive with a set of rather complex systems for distributing torque over the wheels, which makes it possible to effectively realize engine power on soils with reduced load-bearing capacity.

You need to understand that almost all the parameters of a car are interconnected and some can only be improved at the expense of others. For example, reducing the front overhang will reduce the load on the main drive axle, the front one, and on slippery roads the all-wheel drive system will be used much more often.

It’s as if the dynamics have been changed

Finally, my friend finally settles on the model he likes and begins to complete the purchase, while I continue the test alone. And now there is a reason to disappoint him. In terms of directional stability, the RAV4 is superior to its Korean rival, and this is noticeable on the highway. I also find that its gearbox is “more honest” than the Prado’s. What does this mean? Several times I had the feeling that the Prado automatic in manual mode still changed gears on its own (this was noticeable by the movements of the tachometer needle). This doesn't happen on the RAV4. You choose a gear and you drive in it, that is, you accelerate. The transition to the next stage can be achieved only by turning the engine up to the red speed zone.

Acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h in automatic mode is expressed in the following figures. In D mode it’s about 8 seconds, in ECO mode it’s a second slower, in Sport mode it’s faster, but perhaps not by a second. I'm trying manual mode. In fifth gear, the acceleration time increases to 12 seconds, but in fourth gear it is reduced to 7 seconds. Excellent dynamics, and no need for songs about how diesel versions are usually “dumb”. Nothing like this. Indirectly, the good dynamics are confirmed by the environmental class of the 2.2-liter 2AD-FTV engine - Euro 4.

Fuel consumption is discouraging at first. In “manual” mode, that is, without cruise control, at a speed of 125 km/h according to the speedometer (and an average of 114-115 km/h according to the on-board computer on a control section of about 10 km), I quite quickly get very decent results - from 7.4 to 7.6 liters of diesel fuel per hundred. Now "cruise". I set it to 120 km/h (the speedometer also shows 120, but the BC brings it down to earth, showing only 113 km/h). And... quite unexpectedly, the average consumption on the control segment exceeds ten liters. These are the “pies”.

Maybe I made a mistake with the manual measurements? I repeat the experiment. The route is relatively flat, there are climbs, but they are compensated by descents of approximately equal length, so the relief can be neglected. The result is the same: about 8 liters, a little less. I turn on the “cruise” again, again reach ten liters, but decide to extend the test section. And things are getting better, consumption gradually decreases to 7.6 liters, and then to 7.3 liters per hundred. That is, “cruise” and manual mode have approximate parity.

But this is a route. What do we have in our city? For a conventional urban cycle I take a trip along the Moscow Ring Road, 66 km long, with an average speed of 41 km/h. The result is almost equal to the highway one: 7.3 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. Let's make a reservation: almost no traffic jams. I was lucky in this.

In 1994, Japanese manufacturers created a small 3-door SUV of the 1st generation - Toyota RAV 4 I (XA10). Its production continued until 2000, until they released a line of 2nd generation cars - the XA20. This model can be purchased on the secondary market, its cost is from 300,000 rubles.

The first cars were produced in a 3-door body. Since 1995, a 5-door version has appeared. The body is made of high quality steel with a reliable paint and varnish coating. Only the bottom can corrode. A plastic protection is installed that prevents the ingress of salt and dirt.

And, we have to admit, it bears fruit. With each new model year or with the change of generations, more and more convenient, comfortable and interesting cars appear.

The new LED headlights of the Toyota RAV4 are very effective in the dark. And in comparison with halogens they cannot be compared.

Toyota is not far behind. When launching the new generation Toyota RAV4, she spent a long time collecting customer opinions together in order to present the crossover to the world, taking into account the opinions of the majority. Years have passed. And for the upcoming facelift of the fourth-generation model, Toyota again decided to gather the opinions of owners about their bestseller. And, having identified the problem areas, we made the right conclusions and carried out a deep restyling of the crossover. And we tested what came of it on the roads of the most beautiful region of the country - the mountainous Caucasus.

To see the external changes of the updated Toyota RAV4 you don’t have to wear glasses. Now the Rafik’s trunk has a convenient low floor, the loading height has decreased to 646 mm, and the volume has increased to 577 liters.

“What I don’t like: interior materials and design in some places, lack of technological options, shaking and hard suspension, handling!” - said the clients. The Japanese methodically, with characteristic scrupulousness and meticulousness, began to correct everything point by point. Having looked around the interior of the updated Toyota RAV4, it was not difficult to spot a new dashboard with a 4.2-inch color screen - the same as that of Lexus models. The panel is offered in any configuration as part of the basic equipment, while in Europe you can buy the updated RAV4, including with the old panel. By the way, thanks to the appearance of the display, Toyota removed the electronic clock, hated by many, which, before the update, was located at the top of the control panel. In addition to this, the cabin has acquired a 12-volt power outlet for rear row passengers, a compartment for glasses in the front roof panel and a new cup holder in the front part of the cabin, which was dictated by the American RAV4 public, who loves to drink coffee or tea from thermal mugs with a handle. In general, looking at the cabin, we can say that in addition to all its unlimited spaciousness, the Rafik has become more functional, convenient and pleasant to use.

Controls for sports mode, heated seats and windshield, as well as the only USB connector are located in the same invisible zone. Comfortable? No. But on the other hand, how often will you use these keys? But I would add one more USB connector.

However, the list of crossover transformations is not exhausted. Were you missing advanced options? Now the updated Toyota RAV4 has them, cross your fingers, gentlemen: the defense around the crossover is now supported by four external surveillance cameras with eight view options. Thanks to this option, parking the car has become much more convenient. And so that we could finally get into it, the organizers completely covered the windows of one of our cars, and we maneuvered around the parking lot, relying only on all-round cameras. And, we must admit, very successfully.

Rear passengers of the Toyota RAV4, rejoice! You were given personal heated seats, which is very relevant for lovers of leather interiors in our latitudes. The freezing rains that nature has been pampering us with for several winters in a row are no longer scary either. The Rafik glass is stitched with the finest heating threads. Well, to finally warm up the audience, Toyota equipped the gasoline versions of the crossover with a hairdryer that warms up the interior long before all the technical fluids are heated up. And a liquid heater was added to the diesel engine, the end result of which is the same as that of a hair dryer.

The multimedia system is quite convenient to use and not bad to hear. Of the minuses, my colleague and I identified the not-so-advanced graphics and lack of education of the system - it still doesn’t read Cyrillic from devices connected via USB.

Not enough for you? Then keep the Toyota Safety Sense package of active safety systems, which was previously available on the only model of the Japanese brand Toyota Land Cruiser 200. Here you have: an automatic switching system from high beam to low beam; sound warning system for unintentional crossing of road markings; collision warning system with braking function; active cruise control with distance control function to the vehicle in front; character recognition system.

However, enough theory, let's move on to practice. The range of engines has not changed and under the hood of the updated Toyota RAV4 is still the same: 2.2 (150 hp) diesel, 2.0 (146 hp) and 2.5 (180 hp) petrol.

The diesel version of the updated RAV4 has at its disposal a very quiet engine, which, due to its operation, made my colleague and I doubt that it belongs to engines running on heavy fuel. And just a quick glance at the tachometer made it possible to determine this without stopping the car. Volume 2.2 liters, power 150 hp. and 340 Nm of torque, which occurs at 2000 engine speeds - all these characteristics allow you to effectively accelerate on the highway and start from a standstill. The only negative is that the diesel engine’s torque peak is quite short – at 2800 engine rpm the thrust drops. However, we must pay tribute to the 6-speed automatic transmission, which skillfully maneuvers on the edge of such a short moment, keeping the engine in good shape with the right gear. Don't trust automation? Try manual mode. In it, driving becomes even more interesting - at a minimum, you don’t feel the thoughtfulness of the box, and at maximum, it’s always nice to feel like a full-fledged master of the processes taking place in the car.

The diesel RAV4 becomes faster and more active in Sport mode. The gas pedal feels pressed more sharply, the steering wheel feels heavy, and the gearbox shoots through gears a little faster than usual and pulls the engine speed to the red zone. However, the diesel still does not reach the dynamics of the 2.5-liter version. A torque of 380 Nm allows the diesel engine to pull a trailer weighing 300 kg more than the gasoline version of the crossover. But the 2.5-liter Rafik drives easier and beats the diesel, not only by 0.6 seconds to hundreds, but also by feel. However, here those who want to drive quickly and at the same time economically will have to make a choice. The diesel engine consumes about 6 liters per hundred on the highway, while its gasoline opponent consumed twice as much. At the same time, the diesel Toyota RAV4 costs only 10,000 rubles more than the 2.5-liter version.

I also liked the two-liter engine with a variator. Let its acceleration and dynamic characteristics be more modest than the previous two. But I would call this power unit the “golden mean” - firstly, the price tag is lower, secondly, in the city its capabilities are quite sufficient, thirdly, fuel consumption, in our case, was around 9.8-10.5 liters per hundred, which is quite decent for an all-wheel drive urban crossover. In addition, a gasoline engine is not afraid of severe frosts, but a diesel engine, somewhere beyond the Urals, may not start.

Yes, the Toyota RAV4 suspension has also been updated. Complaints about excessive rigidity and handling did not go unnoticed. As a result, the silent blocks of the rear subframe were enlarged, which made it possible to install softer springs and reconfigure the shock absorbers for them, making them a little stiffer. So, without compromising handling, the engineers managed to make the RAV4 more comfortable. And in order to certainly satisfy the demanding client, welding points were added to the design of the rear lower cross member of the body, additional reinforcements were welded at the junction of the transverse floor and the sides of the frame, and the rigidity of the rear subframe was increased. Well, they threw 3.5 kg of soundproofing materials onto the floor, thus doubling the area they covered the car. And if the final touch did not make any breakthroughs in the sound insulation of the crossover. The changes listed above absolutely made it more comfortable and less susceptible to minor irregularities. Now, when you fly onto asphalt of dubious quality, all the cracks, dents, bridge joints and other minor defects of the road surface dissolve in the softer suspension. And, as a result, there was noticeably less shaking in the cabin.

The suspension of the Russian version of the Toyota RAV4 differs from the European or American one - this relates to the question of the global nature of the model. Alas, in Russia the roads leave much to be desired, which means engineers have to adjust the suspension differently and change its key elements to more durable ones.

Actually, the suspension is indifferent to the big bump that started from the moment we drove onto the mountain dirt road. No, the cabin is, of course, shaking. But the road is such that we still need to look for an equivalent one in the vicinity of our cities. And if it weren’t for the high speed and lack of pity for the test car, we would never have heard the front shock absorbers “groan” and “cough” when choosing the rebound stroke. But they work excellently for compression, patiently swallowing every proposed bump.

With one wheel hanging up, the RAV4 continues to move, quite easily overcoming the obstacles presented to it.

Again asphalt, again fast serpentines. “Rafchik” confidently goes turn after turn. Now, both on high-speed straights and in turns, the crossover handles very well, delighting with a confident ride and the absence of frightening rolls.

Being in the mountains and not going off-road is nonsense. Especially for Toyota, which is famous for its SUVs. To force the intersection, the Toyota RAV4 is equipped with a hill descent assist system, permanent all-wheel drive (with the update, there is always 10% preload on the rear wheels, and not as before, when the Sport mode is turned on) and ground clearance from 165 to 197 mm. Yes, alas, Toyota engineers never figured out where to remove the exhaust system pipe sticking out a couple of centimeters below the crankcase protection. As a result, the Rafik with a 2.5-liter engine is limited in cross-country ability and has the lowest ground clearance among all crossover modifications. However, we were lucky, and my colleague and I did not cross the Gum-Bashi pass on it. The steep climb up the mountain was not easy. The first time I was unable to drive through the snow, under which there was grass. All-wheel drive tried in every possible way to get our crew to the peak of the climb, but the stabilization system did not allow the wheels to slip and stifled traction, being confident that it was saving the car. In fact, the crossover began to helplessly slide down the slope. However, having accelerated and turned off the stabilization system, I, without difficulty, managed to saddle the proposed peak. And then, releasing all the pedals, I used the assistance system when descending the mountain.

The system skillfully handled various grades of slopes, preventing my Toyota RAV4 from sliding or accelerating excessively on the descent. Seemingly useless in the city, in the mountains it showed itself in all its glory. And if you think that there are no situations when it would be useful to you, don’t promise it. It was here, precisely in this test, without her, that no one would have been able to hold back the car, which was rushing down, according to all the laws of physics, with a brake or an engine and gearbox. However, it also has its limits. On the last descent, about 45-50 degrees, we were literally sliding down the slope. The system honestly crunched and fought for the survivability of the car, but it was powerless against the snow under the wheels, the degree of slope and again damned physics. Well, there will be a lesson for the future.

Toyota RAV4 enters the Russian market before Europe, where the main emphasis at the launch of the model will be on hybrid technologies.

The bottom line is a very balanced crossover with a bunch of nice improvements and a luxurious appearance. And looking over the list of technologies introduced into it again, you inevitably think about the point of paying more for NX, when here it is, almost the same, but with mother-of-pearl buttons. And, moreover, with a more comfortable suspension. However, amateurs are chasing nameplates, how can you convince them of this?

Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD

The all-wheel drive scheme of the new Toyota RAV 4 in the expensive Prestige and Prestige Safety trim levels is fundamentally different from the classic Dynamic Torque Control AWD configuration. There is no center clutch or rear differential. Initially, the crossover is front-wheel drive, and the thrust is directed back using a transfer case, a driveshaft and a gearbox with two electromechanical multi-plate clutches (each wheel has its own). Cam clutches with electromagnets are installed on both sides of the cardan - when they open, the transmission of power flow to the rear axle stops, and the shaft itself stops spinning.

The torque distribution in the Dynamic Torque Vectoring transmission is managed by a special control unit located in the rear of the car. It takes into account many parameters, including the position of the steering wheel, wheel speed, angular acceleration, brake pedal position, and selected gear. Based on the data received, the ECU doses the traction on the rear wheels, and the transmitted force is determined solely by the current strength on the electromagnets.

The three-position Multi-Terrain Select switch is responsible for changing the operating mode of the new Toyota RAV 4 XA50 all-wheel drive system. It allows you to choose between Normal, Mud & Sand and Rock & Dirt settings. The last two modes are activated at speeds up to 40 and 25 km/h, respectively.

RAV 4 gasoline engines are available in 2 and 2.5 liters. Accordingly, the engine power is 150 and 200 horsepower. The front view is defined: from above - by narrow side LED headlights, connected by an engine compartment line, interrupted in the middle by a logo, by a central radiator grille, from below - by a large plastic trim, from the sides - by vertical embrasures in which fog lights are visible.

The side lines of the body are made with deliberately rough strokes, in combination with the same chopped plastic frame of the wheel arches. Roof rails, either decorative or optionally carrying a luggage load, emphasize the silhouette of the car from above.

At the rear, the picture is completed, occupying almost the entire space, by the tailgate with a spoiler at the top, resting on figured pillars located on either side of it.

At the bottom there is a bumper with a built-in trim and reflectors, and underneath there are two exhaust pipes on the sides. The trunk door glass and rear side windows are factory tinted.


Back view

In some trim levels (for example, RAV4 with the Adventure Offroad package), the appearance differs from the standard one due to the use of other body trim parts, but such vehicles are not yet sold in Russia.

As of 2021, spring, the base color of RAV4 vehicles officially supplied to Russia is white.

Other body colors can be selected for an additional fee. Painting a car with metallic paint will cost an additional 19 thousand rubles.

Paint colors: black, silver, turquoise, gray-brown. White color with pearlescent effect will cost 26 thousand rubles.

Only for the Style package, a combined pearlescent coloring, white with a black roof, is possible, for 50 rubles.

Various restrictions related to the pandemic did not fail to affect the Russian automobile market, which decreased by 9.1 percent. At the end of the year, 1,598,825 vehicles of various classes were sold. Against this background, the 19% increase in sales of the new Rav 4 looks unprecedented. Statistics showed that owners were found in 36,433 SUVs. And yet, in general, the situation for Toyota in our country was not the most rosy, and the company lost 12 percent of customers, having sold 91,598 cars. The main culprit can be considered the Camry sedan, which, pending restyling, dropped by 20% with a result of 27,373 units.

The base engine for the new Rafik was a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with the factory designation M20A-FKS. It belongs to the new line of Dynamic Force Engines, which includes advanced Toyota engines with a high thermal efficiency of 40%. The four-cylinder unit received an aluminum block with fused liners, a DVVT-iE gas distribution mechanism with variable phases on the intake (VVT-iE) and exhaust (VVT-i), a combined fuel injection system (distributed injection is combined with direct). Design features of the engine include laser notches on the piston skirts for better oil retention, close placement of coolant and oil channels (warm-up is accelerated), hydraulic compensators and roller tappets in the valve groups, timing chain drive with hydraulic tensioner. The engine operates on the Miller cycle, geometric compression ratio 13.0:1.

Crossover with a 2.0-liter M20A-FKS engine producing 149 hp. and 206 Nm, is equipped with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT. In the second case, the drive can be either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The variator has mechanical first and reverse gears.

  • Gasoline, 2.5. Volume – 2.5 liters, power – 180 horsepower, 4 in-line cylinders, maximum torque – 233 Nm at 4100 rpm. Installed in conjunction with automatic transmission.
  • Gasoline, 2.0. Volume – 2 liters, power – 146 horsepower, 4 in-line cylinders, maximum torque – 187 Nm at 3600 rpm. Works in tandem with a CVT and manual transmission.
  • Hybrid 2.5. Volume – 2.5 liters, power – 197 horsepower, 4 in-line cylinders, maximum torque – 206 Nm at 4400 rpm. Works in tandem with a variator.

Most often, car enthusiasts from Russia are offered configurations with a 2.0 engine and a CVT, as well as with a 2.5-liter power unit and automatic transmission.
