How to select and install a new battery in a Toyota RAV4

Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover made in Japan. It was produced in variations with 3 and 5 doors, but starting from the 3rd generation, only 5-door models rolled off the assembly line. And, by the way, modern RAV4s do not have permanent all-wheel drive. Therefore, the car is equipped with medium-power engines, and the installed battery is designed for low starting currents. This was also facilitated by a special intelligent engine starting system (starting from the 3rd generation Toyota RAV4), thanks to which the start occurred when the starter was spun up to only 100–150 revolutions.

Batteries found on Toyota Rav 4

The Rav4 was equipped with a variety of versions of power units - gasoline, diesel, turbocharged and not - all these factors affect the characteristics of the battery located in the engine compartment.

Most often, a battery from one of the Japanese manufacturers is installed at the factory - it can be Yuasa or Panasonic. But this does not mean that among the “Europeans” there are no models that would fit the Rav4. The choice is quite large - it can be Mutlu, Varta, Bosch, as well as a number of domestic brands.

All batteries on the Rav4 are made according to the Japanese standard size (JIS), in addition, all batteries must have a reverse arrangement of electrodes that conduct current. This is what the classification of batteries for Toyota Rav4 looks like by size and generation:

  • The first (XA10 1994-2000) and second (CA20W 2000-2006 onwards) generations of Toyota Rav 4, on which a gasoline power unit was installed, were equipped with a battery in the old standard size (238x129x225 mm), which is now replaced by 236x128x220 mm . But the size of the installation platform for the battery allows you to place a battery of European standard size 242x175x190 mm.
  • The third (Toyota Rav4 XA30 2005-2014), fourth (CA40 2012 - present) and fifth (XA50, presented only in 2021) generations of the Japanese crossover are equipped with batteries in the standard size 232x173x225 mm (this applies to trim levels with gasoline power units).
  • Diesel Rav4s in all generations are equipped with the most capacious and powerful batteries on the market (size 306x175x225 mm). And the factory battery on diesel cars has a capacity of 80 Ah and a current of 735A.

Battery dead — logbook Toyota RAV4 2021 on DRIVE2

Many books...
The day before yesterday the battery died due to being left on. head light. The car showed no signs of life, including the signaling. The hood is blocked additionally. alarm lock. When I reached for the wires that were routed for backup power, I was unpleasantly surprised, because...

instead of power wires there turned out to be the most snot (this is entirely my fault - I didn’t check the work of the installers, I was too lazy to disassemble the floor of the cabin).

To unlock the hood with the alarm, the ignition was still required. With autostart, the ignition miraculously turned on, but it is only available in security mode, so again it didn’t work; the starter, of course, didn’t turn.

It was decided to take the wires for lighting, fortunately they are more powerful, put the minus directly on the body at the ground connection point, clamp the positive terminal of the snot stronger and more reliably on the battery terminal. At first, again, no reaction to the start button. Several times in autostart mode I tried to have time to disarm and unlock the hood before trying to crank the starter - again it didn’t work.

But after the third such attempt, a miracle happened: there was a reaction to the start button, we managed to turn on the ignition, but the hood did not want to unlock. Apparently jammed, because... The standard lock was open, but it was no longer possible to close it back.

Pressing the hood, I turned the security on and off a couple of times, only after this the torment with the hood lock ended, the alarm successfully unlocked it and I could exhale))

The original battery dropped to 7-8 volts. The car started from a live battery on the second try. An hour and a half of idling and a trip of +-40 km revived the original battery to 12.8 V.

Conclusions (primarily for myself, but maybe it will be useful to someone):

1. Don’t forget to turn off the sources of consumption before leaving the car.2. Check all stages of installers’ work, including performance in emergency situations.

3. Whether or not to install a lock safety cable is a big question. Here everyone probably decides for themselves.

Questions:

1. What did you do wrong?2. There was an idea to connect the plus directly to the power wire of the body ECU in the cabin, but is this not fraught with anything?

3. What else could have been done?

Thank you for attention. Mileage: 4930 km

Characteristics and models of batteries suitable for Rav 4

Gasoline Rav4

The first standard size found on the Toyota Rav4 - 238x129x225 mm - is extremely rarely sold in domestic stores, but it is fully replaced by batteries with dimensions of 236x128x220 mm. The manufacturer installed such batteries on cars of the first two generations (Rav4 XA10 and Rav4 CA20W). Their capacity ranges from 45-59 a/h, the current can vary from 430 to 570 A. The battery is secured in the engine compartment using an upper transverse bar, which allows you to install models with or without a lower side. Below are several batteries included in the first group:

  • the most affordable model in this size is Joker 55B24L. Its capacity is 45 a/h, and the current when starting the engine is 430 A. The dimension is slightly different from the specified standard - 238x129x227 mm, but this does not interfere with its successful operation;
  • The Korean-made Solite 50 Rs, AlphaLine 52 R and AlphaLine 55 R batteries are approximately in the same price category. The capacity of the first is 50 a/h, the second is 52 a/h, the third is 55 a/h, the current strength is 470, 480 and 500 And accordingly;
  • the top model is the South Korean AlphaLine Ultra 59R. Its capacity is 59 a/h, current strength is 550 A, dimensions coincide with the standard size indicators.

The second size, suitable for the Toyota Rav4 and successfully replacing the first (that is, can also be used on gasoline versions of the first two generations of cars), has the dimensions of a classic European-style battery - 242x175x190 mm. The polarity should have a reverse arrangement of terminals, the capacity ranges from 55 to 62 a/h, and the current strength from 430 to 680 A. Here are the battery models that apply to it:

  • domestically produced batteries AutoFan 55R and 60R. Their capacity differs by 5 a/h - for the first it is 55 a/h, for the second it is 60 a/h. Current strength is 520 and 470 A, respectively;
  • in the middle price range - German Bosch S3 005 and Varta Blue D24 - both batteries have reverse polarity and dimensions are 100% compliant with standards, but Bosch has a lower starting current (480A) and a smaller capacity (56 a/h), while Varta has these indicators are 540 A (current) and 60 a/h (capacity);
  • The top models both in price and performance are the German Moll M3plus 62R and Varta AGM D52. The capacity of the first is 62 a/h, with a starting current of 600 A; the second is inferior in capacity (60 a/h), but superior in power (680 A). Fully comply with the dimensional criteria of the standard size.

The third standard size (232x173x225 mm) is common on gasoline Rav4s of the last three generations. The capacities of such batteries range from 60-78 a/h, and the current strength is 550-670A with reverse polarity. This group includes:

  • Asian Horse 60R and Afa Asia 60R are two basic models located at the lower end of the price range. They have the same capacity - 60 a/h, the current strength of the first is 540A, the second - 510A;
  • in the middle price segment are Globatt Ace 75D23L and TAB Polar S 65R, both slightly smaller in size (230x168x220 mm). Capacity - 65 a/h, current strength for the first is 680 A, versus 650 A for the second.
  • The leader in capacity and power is AlphaLine Ultra 78R - with dimensions identical to the standard size criteria. The power is 750 A, with a capacity of 78 a/h.

Diesel Rav4

The fourth standard size is the most capacious and powerful of those found on passenger cars; it has dimensions of 306x175x225 mm, but it is difficult to find in Russia. An equivalent replacement in terms of power indicators are batteries with dimensions of 301x175x220 or 303x173x225 mm. The capacity of such batteries exceeds 80 A/h, and the starting current starts at around 750A. Models of this group:

  • Joker 105D31L is the most affordable of those on the market, while its size differs slightly from the basic criteria - 306x173x225 mm, but the capacity is 90 a/h. Current strength - 750 A;
  • MUTLU Mega Calcium 115D31L and Solite 95R batteries are representatives of the middle price segment. The Turkish model is more powerful and capacious - 100 a/h and 850 A, the Korean one is slightly inferior to it - 95 a/h and 750 A;
  • the most expensive and productive battery is the AlphaLine Ultra 105R with a capacity of 105 Ah. The current strength during a cold start of the car will be 900 A.

What is TRC

TRC is a traction control system that regulates the transmission of torque between the wheels on the vehicle’s drive axle. The abbreviation TRC stands for “Traction Control”, translated from the British “Traction Control”.

The traction control system first appeared in 1971 in America on such recognizable cars as Cadillac and Buick. It has been used in business class cars of the German Mercedes brand since 1987. After the 2000s, manufacturers began to include TRC in cars en masse.

Speed sensors monitor wheel speed and the system takes measures to reduce traction. The first modifications of cars reduced traction by slowing down engine speed. Modern vehicles reduce speed due to a special viscous coupling.

If the “TRC On” or “TRAC On” lamp is on, this means that the wheel slip and skid control system is turned on. In Toyota, this system monitors and softens skidding and slipping. Although it was initially created only as a traction control device.

The TRC system works as follows:

  • Sensors monitor wheel speed. The signals are sent to the ECU (electronic control unit).
  • If the device detects an increase in speed, it transmits a signal to the actuators.
  • Special automatic TRC valves will block the movement of wheels that begin to slip.

In this way, traction control protects the driver and the car from accidents on the roads.

On Toyota Avensus cars. Auris, Rav 4, Lexus there is a button on the dashboard called “TRC Off”. It allows you to disable traction control.

How to replace the battery on Rav 4 yourself

There are no difficulties in replacing the battery on a Rav4. This can be done with just one key at “10. The fastener is made using an upper pressure plate secured with two nuts on studs threaded into the platform for placing the battery.

The nuts on the terminals are unscrewed (first negative, then “plus”), and the pressure plate is removed (to do this, you need to unscrew the nuts on the studs). The old battery is removed and a new one is installed. Then everything is twisted in reverse order.

7.2.3 Removing and installing the battery

Removing and installing the battery

Disconnecting the battery erases data from some electronic memory units, such as the engine management system, transmission fault memory, and anti-lock braking system fault memory. Before disconnecting the battery, it is necessary to read the data from the memory blocks at an AUDI service station. If these faults appear as a result of further driving of the vehicle, they are again recorded in memory.

The automatic power windows should be activated again after connecting the battery.

Serially installed radios have a security lock. It prevents unauthorized use of the device if its power supply is interrupted. The power supply is interrupted not only when the battery is disconnected, but also when the radio is removed or if the radio fuse has failed.

What to do when you receive a battery warning?

Deciding what to do when a Volvo battery warning appears can be difficult. If the problem is only due to a partially discharged battery, continuing to drive will help charge the battery and the error message will disappear.

On the other hand, if the battery charging system is not working, you may drive for another 10 or 20 minutes before your car shuts down.

Here are a few things you can try, especially if you're getting a low battery warning.

Unplug your phone chargers.

Make sure you remove all chargers from the cigarette socket. Auxiliary outlets draw current from the battery. Connecting chargers and adapters to a cigarette outlet may result in excessive current flow from the battery, especially when the engine is off.

Drive the vehicle for at least 30 minutes and see if the low battery message goes away. If you continue to receive the low battery message, you may need to replace your Volvo battery.

charge the battery

If you receive a low battery warning and your battery is relatively new, try charging the battery. The best way to charge your Volvo battery is to use a smart charger and connect it to the jump starting terminals.

Although charging a Volvo battery using a manual charger may take several hours, it is the recommended method as it allows the battery to be fully charged. Follow these instructions to learn how to charge your Volvo battery. You can also go on a long trip and this will also fully charge your Volvo battery.

Test charging system

The simplest test you can do is to use a multimeter and check the voltage on the battery while the car is running. The voltage should be between 13 and 14.5 volts. To get a better understanding of your Volvo's alternator and battery, perform a charging system check.

You can do this yourself as it is a simple test, but you will need a charging system analyzer. Follow this guide to learn how to test your charging system yourself. You can also visit your local auto parts store as most auto parts stores such as Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, PepBoys, O'Reilly Auto Parts will perform a free charging system inspection.

Reading CEM codes

The next step is to use a diagnostic scanner to read trouble codes from the Central Electronic Module (CEM). An error code and a brief description of the problem will be stored in this module when there is a charging error.

To read the Volvo CEM module you will need a special Volvo scanner, such as iCarsoft for Volvo. To learn more about Volvo scanners, read our article on choosing the best OBD2 scanners for Volvo.

Software updates

Your Volvo has more than 20 modules. One or more modules in the vehicle may be drawing excessive current. For example, the Volvo satellite module is known to cause excessive current consumption.

Software updates from the dealer may resolve this issue. Call your dealer and ask if there are any software updates available for your specific Volvo.

Sulfation of plates

Sulfation is the formation of coarse-crystalline lead sulfate on the surface of the plates, which, during charging, does not transform into the original substances - lead and lead peroxide. The reasons for plate sulfation are:

  • long-term storage of batteries at positive temperatures without recharging
  • systematic deep discharges
  • contact of the upper parts of the plates with air when the electrolyte level is low

The formation of sulfation is promoted by increased temperature and density of the electrolyte, increased self-discharge, and short circuits of the plates. Sulfated plates take on lighter colors, often with white spots.

Batteries with sulfated plates have increased internal resistance, reduced capacity and reduced electrolyte density at the end of charging. When charging sulfated batteries, the voltage at the battery terminals quickly increases (at the end of charging it rises to 3 V), the temperature and gas evolution begins prematurely. A sulfated battery discharges faster than a good one, with a sharp drop in voltage when using the starter.

Types of automobile fuses

Each individual Toyota RAV4 4th generation fuse is designed to protect against overload currents and small short circuits of a certain list of electrical equipment. They are assembled into a mounting block, which ensures the functioning of all electronic circuits of the car.

Each protective element has its own current rating, which also corresponds to a specific color. The design of fuses may differ. Below are more common types:

Plug-in - a fuse-link is installed between two open contacts, which is protected by a plastic casing. If the rated current value is exceeded, the fuse-link burns out;

Thermobimetallic - instead of a fuse-link, sensitive plates with a silver-plated contact part are used. When the set current value is exceeded, the plates open and close after cooling.

Thermobimetallic

Some car owners use so-called bugs instead of industrial protective parts. A bug is a piece of wire that closes an electrical circuit. The implementation of such methods can lead to damage to all wiring, which may be accompanied by a fire in the car.

Engine compartment

The right side of the engine compartment (as the car is moving) contains a mounting block where fusible jumpers to other electrical circuits and components of the car are located

Transmission

An electromagnetic clutch is responsible for the distribution of torque between the axles. The coupling seals may leak after 50-100 thousand km. With a mileage of more than 100-150 thousand km, the clutch may hum. The reason is the loss of properties of the lubricant embedded in the bearing during assembly. A new bearing costs about 700-900 rubles, replacing it will cost 1.5-2 thousand rubles. The price of a new assembled electric coupling is about 20-25 thousand rubles.

The axle seals of the front and rear gearboxes may leak after 50-100 thousand km. A little later, with a mileage of more than 100-150 thousand km, the shank of the front or rear gearbox begins to “snot”.

It is worth noting that not all versions had an all-wheel drive system. Therefore, when inspecting, you should look under the car and check for the presence of a rear differential. If the car is all-wheel drive, then there must be a transmission lock button in the cabin.

The engines are paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. After restyling, the 5-speed manual transmission was replaced by a six-speed gearbox, and a CVT was installed with the 2.0 liter engine. All boxes are generally reliable and have no serious complaints, with a few exceptions. So, owners of RAV 4 with a 5-speed manual transmission use the lever in first gear. It is possible to turn off the speed only after squeezing the clutch twice. Owners also note a slight howl when driving in 1st and 2nd gears. The clutch lasts more than 150-200 thousand km.

Toyota RAV4 (2008 - 2010)

The automatic transmission may “lock up” after replacing the working fluid, and not immediately, but after several tens of kilometers. Such cases are not uncommon. Official dealers confirm the presence of a similar problem and recommend changing the oil after a mileage of about 60 thousand km. If the mileage has already far exceeded these figures, then it is better to ride until the last minute. Dealers do not talk about the reasons for the failure of the box.

Precautionary measures

For safety reasons, the driver should observe certain points, namely:

  • Do not place any iron objects between the charging area and the device being charged during the process.
  • Do not cover charging devices with a cloth or other object while charging.
  • Do not disassemble, remove or modify the wireless charging stand.
  • It is prohibited to bring magnetic cards, for example credit cards, or magnetic storage media near the charging platform.

Compliance with these rules will protect your car from fire and equipment damage.
