There are several reasons for replacing discs on a RAV 4, but for a safe and comfortable ride, selection is required in accordance with the characteristics recommended by the manufacturer. The wrong choice of wheels can lead to costly crossover repairs.
Wheels on Rav 4 are changed for safe driving.
Basic parameters of car wheels
The owner's manual specifies the characteristics of the vehicle's wheels. The main concepts are:
- A disk is a structural element that transmits force from the axle to the tire and back. A tire is installed on the rim of the disk.
- A hub is a unit that transmits rotation from the axle to the wheel.
- The rim is where the tire meets the rim.
- Offset is the distance the center of the contact patch is displaced relative to the plane of the hub. As the value increases, the protrusion of the wheel outward increases; the lower the value, the deeper it is recessed into the depths of the car.
Characteristics of car wheels.
It is allowed to use several tire sizes for each wheel. The designation in the manual 205/60 R17 ET39 indicates, in mm:
- 205 — tire width;
- 60 — ratio of tire height to width, in%;
- R15 - diameter in inches, R - radial type;
- ET39 – overhang value.
The presence in the designation of PCD 5 * 114.3 (bolt pattern or drilling) indicates the characteristics of fastening the wheel to the hub, 5 holes with a distance between their centers of 114.3 mm.
Standard wheel and tire sizes
The table below offers all available options for changing wheels and tires.

To determine the disk article, use:
- Parameter 6J or 7.5J indicates the width of the rim, indicated in inches.
- The numbers after X from 16 to 19 are the diameter, inch.
- The last letters ET35 or ET45 are the offset characteristic, mm.
Tire parameters indicate:
- 215-235 tire width in mm.
- After “/” there is a parameter for the profile height in relation to the width (55-70), the number is given as a percentage.
- R – radius type.
All RAV 4 crossovers have the same bolt pattern (PCD), its dimensions are 5x114.3 mm. Thus, there are 5 holes with a diameter of 114.3 mm. Central hole (DIA) with a diameter of 60.1 mm.
Important! When choosing disks, you should ensure that the central hole is identical to the factory one from the manufacturer.
When is it necessary to replace disks on a machine?
The condition of the wheels is important for reliable contact of the car with the road surface. They provide traction to the road surface while steering the vehicle. The protector is responsible for this task. In the off-season, tires are changed: winter - for summer, and vice versa. The main difference between tires is the size and tread pattern, as well as the hardness of the rubber. Winter tires have a large pattern, rough, deep, with studs, ensuring contact with the road. Replacing tires is prescribed in traffic regulations and is controlled by inspectors. Replacement can be made for other reasons:
- Tire wear. The tread depth on passenger vehicles has become less than 1.6 mm. This criterion is mentioned in the traffic rules. You cannot drive on such wheels, as the car may not stay on the road. The height measurement is checked at a service station.
- Uneven wear. Due to technical reasons and the driver's oversight, the edges or center of the tire are erased, and the wheel alignment is incorrect. Such a defect can cause an accident.
- Mechanical damage. The tire gets holes, breaks, the cord is exposed, and the frame delaminates.
- Tire aging. According to GOST, the service life of a tire is limited to 5 years. Even with a whole tread, rubber is unusable (loses elasticity) due to the influence of the sun, temperature changes, and exposure to chemical reagents. Such a tire is especially dangerous in winter on slippery roads.
- Deformation. Most often, wheel geometry violations are caused by cord breaks. The car begins to shake and throws to the sides. The check is simple - if, when rolling on a flat surface, deviations from uniform movement, “figure eight”, etc., are observed, the wheel (tire) must be replaced.
The discs on the car provide traction.
A common factor in changing wheels is the desire to update the appearance of the car.
When to change tires and wheels
There is no exact answer to this question; you just need to carefully monitor their condition.
Tires are designed for smooth contact of the car with the road surface. With their help, earth or water is expelled from under the wheels upon contact. The tread helps improve vehicle control. Its relief pattern is responsible for resistance to friction and mechanical damage from contact. Thus, the tread acts as a protector for the tire.
Helpful information! The difference between winter tires and summer tires is the size of the tread and the contour of its pattern.
Winter tires use rougher, deeper contours. Spikes are also added for driving on as many sections of the track as possible. In addition, changing tires depending on the season is a necessity. This is evidenced by the clause in the traffic rules.
Wheel and tire sizes for Toyota RAV4 of different generations
The size of tires used on Toyota RAV 4 crossovers depends on the year of manufacture:
- 2nd generation, from 2000 to 2005 - 215/70/R16;
- in the period from 2005 to 2010 - 235/60 R16;
- from 2010 to 2015 - 225/70/R17;
- RAV4 IV (XA40) (2012-2021) - 235/60/R18;
- RAV4 V (XA50) (2019-2021) - 235/55/R19
The danger of installing large rims is the possibility of tire friction on the fender liners and increased load on the vehicle's chassis.
First
The first crossovers from 1994 to 2000 were always equipped with wheels with a diameter of 16″.
The first generation was equipped with wheels with a diameter of 16″.
Second
The second generation from 2001 was supplied with 17″ wheels, and from 2005 their diameter was increased to 18″.
Third
The third generation of Toyota RAV4 crossovers began to be equipped with 18″ wheels.
Fourth
The fourth revision of the Toyota RAV 4 from 2021 uses dimensions of 18″ or 19″.
Fifth
The latest generation of crossovers comes with 18″ or 19″ wheels.
The fifth generation has 18″ or 19″ wheels.
Factory equipment
A wheel is a part of a car. It allows the car to move and transfers the vertical load of the vehicle to the ground. Softens mechanical impacts, dampens vibrations from contact with the road. The maneuverability, controllability, and aerodynamics of the car depend on the wheel.
In Toyota assembly shops, cars are equipped with wheels of the original, factory configuration. When engineers develop a car model, they know what requirements it will meet. On the Toyota RAV4, the wheel size meets the requirements of a parquet SUV.
Crossover modifications are divided into 5 generations. Each is equipped with its own standard wheels.
Wheel size by generation:
- the first - since 1994 16 inches;
- the second - from 2001 17 inches, from 2005 - 18;
- third - 18 inches;
- fourth and fifth - from 2021 18-19 inches.
All versions use stamped wheels as standard. Changing them to cast and forged ones is acceptable.
Selection criteria: what to look for
When choosing wheels, you should be guided by the initial parameters - season of the year, driving style, type of terrain. The main materials used in the production of wheels are steel and aluminum. Titanium, due to its high cost, is not considered. In casting production, aluminum with nickel additives is more often used. The alloy allows you to create beautiful, impressive products that are not subject to corrosion and can withstand the loads of passenger vehicles.
Light weight improves vehicle dynamics, maneuverability, and increases traction due to the larger tire width.
Steel wheels are heavier - the car's dynamics are worse. But in winter, weight becomes an advantage, improving contact with the road and preventing skidding. It is recommended to use alloy wheels in summer, and steel wheels in winter. Additionally, steel wheels larger than 16″ are difficult to find, so for sizes 17″ and larger the selection narrows.
Cast or forged
Alloy wheels are divided into 2 large groups:
- cast;
- forged.
Cast and forged wheels differ in manufacturing technology.
The main difference between them is the manufacturing technology. During casting, the former form a fine-grained structure, like sintered balls. During operation, microcracks accumulate in the metal, invisible from the outside and to the naked eye. At an arbitrary, unpredictable moment in time, the wheel breaks and can lead to an emergency with serious consequences.
A forged disk acquires a fibrous structure, which gives more plasticity to the product and does not lead to splitting, but the cost of forging exceeds the price of casting.
Popular disk models
RAV 4 of the first and second generations are designed for 16″ wheels, widely available on the market. The third generation of crossovers was delivered on wheels with a radius of 17″ and characteristics of 6.5Jx17 5/114.3 ET39 60.1. The cost of stamped wheels differs slightly from cast ones - a Chinese-made wheel can be found for ₽2,600, and one made in Germany (KFZ) for ₽5,200. If you take care of the design, then steel wheels will need decorative caps, and then the attractiveness of casting increases.
On the market you can find cast wheels for a crossover of satisfactory and good quality, at a price in the range of ₽3500-4700. The discs described below are in greatest demand in Russian stores.

Standard nuts
When installing wheels in the basic version of Toyota RAV 4, studs with nuts are used. Universal fastener with M12x1.25 thread.
When replacing a rim, it is important to check that the parameters of both versions are the same. Replacing a die disk with a cast one requires checking the length of the fastener because cast products are often thicker than steel.
Important! If during installation the pressing surface does not coincide, the seat will be destroyed and the disk will not be suitable for use.
Locks will help you avoid wheel theft. A bolt with a unique type of head, or simply a non-standard type of nut, is mounted in one mount.
For the RAV 4 model, components from the Farad 20156SL or McGard 21156 series are suitable. You should check the thread sizes, they should be standard - 12x1.5 mm.
Parameters of standard nuts
Alloy wheels in the basic configuration of the Toyota RAV 4 are secured with studs, nuts with press washers and M12x1.5 threads. The length of the mounts for a standard stamped wheel is shorter than for a cast wheel. The seat has a cone shape with an angle of inclination to the bolt axis of 60°. The surface of the fastener must be completely adjacent to the wheel, otherwise during movement one of the planes will be deformed or destroyed, and the disc will be damaged beyond repair.
To protect against wheel theft, one of the bolts (studs) and nuts is made with a specially shaped head that cannot be unscrewed without a special key included with the mount. For RAV 4, the BULLLOCK (KYO-EI), BASIC (ROADHORSE) and others with different lengths and head sizes are suitable.

Consequences of installing disks of non-standard sizes
Replacing wheel rims affects the appearance of the car, but also affects its characteristics:
- reaction time to steering wheel movement;
- adhesion force with the road surface;
- tire wear;
- the amount of noise;
- fuel consumption.
Discs made of aluminum, titanium, and their alloys are lightweight and help reduce fuel consumption and increase vehicle controllability. Installing wheels with a wide profile increases traction on dry road surfaces, but worsens it on wet or dirty roads, leading to an increased likelihood of lateral skidding. When installing wheels of non-standard sizes, the loads on the suspension, hub, bearings, and body change, reducing their service life.
What is the effect of installing non-standard dimensions on a Toyota RAV4?
Wheels are changed to improve the appearance of the vehicle (tuning) or to change the dynamic performance of the car.
For a vehicle this does not go unnoticed. The following characteristics change:
- steering response;
- tire grip, tire wear;
- noise level;
- fuel consumption.
Lightweight titanium and aluminum wheels improve vehicle handling and reduce fuel consumption. Tire and wheel sizes are interrelated. Wide tires are suitable for dry asphalt. On a muddy road and snow, the car skids sideways.
Aluminum wheels are softer than steel. Immediately after installation, the material begins to compact and the fasteners weaken. Therefore, after the first trips, the fastenings are tightened with a torque wrench. But without much effort, so as not to tear off the studs.
Detailed instructions for DIY replacement
Changing a wheel is a simple operation and is accessible to almost every driver. Its implementation is carried out in several steps:
- park the car on level ground;
- loosen the wheel bolts;
- lift the required part of the car with a jack, having previously secured it with a hand brake and wheel stands for insurance;
- unscrew the bolts;
- remove the wheel;
- install a new one (spare tire or spare tire);
- tighten the fasteners without tightening, it is advisable to apply a lubricant such as lithol to the threads;
- lower the car;
- tighten the bolts to the torque recommended by the manufacturer.
After a few kilometers, it is better to stop and check the tightness of all the bolts on the replaced wheel. To prevent uneven wear on the wheel bearings, the bolts on all wheels must be tightened equally. Why is it advisable to purchase a torque wrench?
