Repair and operation manual for Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla 150 operating instructions are intended for drivers and car owners operating this vehicle. This manual contains a number of important and useful information that a car enthusiast should know.

Many drivers, relying on their experience and technical intuition, neglect to use this document. Familiarization with the official instructions greatly facilitates the operation of the vehicle, increases the level of safety and comfort when operating and servicing the vehicle.

Safety regulations

It should be noted that the repair and operation manual for the Toyota Corolla we are considering is also suitable for cars manufactured in 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005 with AE 104 and NZE 121 bodies.

When carrying out any work on a car, it is very important to always follow safety rules; we list the main ones:

  • when starting the engine in a garage or other room, you need to check whether it is ventilated or open the doors;
  • Before starting car repairs or servicing, you must disconnect the battery wires;
  • if welding work is planned, then it is additionally necessary to disconnect the wires coming from the generator and the motor control unit.

Important: If you have a coded audio system, disconnecting the wires will block it, in which case you need to enter the code. It is on the card that the car has.

This advice is most relevant for 2005 and 2006 models.

If the car is coasting, do not turn off the ignition; the anti-theft device will work, resulting in the steering column being blocked.

Do not forget that all technical fluids are toxic!

The exhaust gas system contains a neutralizer, which heats up to more than 600°C when the engine is running. For this reason, it is necessary to ensure that there are no flammable materials under the machine.

Vehicle operation is prohibited:

  • if the oil pressure warning light is on;
  • when the battery warning light is on.

Such indicators indicate the possibility of a short circuit in the wiring and a fire.

You cannot stand under the car while holding it with a jack; you need to install a reliable support under the body. Before lifting the car with a jack, set the handbrake, and then put chocks under the wheels.

It is strictly forbidden to smoke when pouring gasoline into the gas tank.

You cannot check the generator device by disconnecting the wires from the battery and getting a spark.

Operating instructions for Toyota Corolla 2008: owner's manual

It is difficult to overestimate the importance for the owner of any car, and especially a foreign car, to have an operating manual for his faithful servant. Most queries with the tags “Operating instructions for the Japanese car Toyota Corolla 2008” do not give the desired result. And those pages that open via links do not provide any useful information, but are full of enticing offers to order or buy this book at a considerable price.

One can only sympathize with those Toyota Corolla owners who begin to take some action related to service or even minor car repairs without having this wonderful book in front of them. There is no point in talking about the average complexity of car repairs without an instruction manual.

Photo 1. One of the pages of the instruction manual

Especially for visitors to our website, work has been done to copy the service album for the Toyota Corolla 2008 and everything is put up for public access in digitized form. The manual takes up more than 300 sheets of neat text. This is one of the few cases when the thicker the book, the happier the reader. But even on so many pages, the authors of the instructions managed to place almost all the information that may be needed when servicing and repairing a Toyota Corolla, both for a car enthusiast with little experience and for a professional mechanic or electrician.

Structure of the instruction manual

In the book, the material is divided into six chapters, and each of them discusses its own topic, its own subtleties and complexities.

Here is the order in which the material is presented based on the chapter titles:

  • Before starting the movement;
  • While driving;
  • Interior equipment of the car;
  • Car care;
  • In the event of a malfunction;
  • Vehicle specifications.

Each chapter is divided into subsections, which can be from two to seven. In the designated subsection, the reader gets access to specific information on the maintenance and repair of certain components and mechanisms of the 2008 Toyota Corolla.

Detailed contents of the manual chapters

Everything, from ignition keys with safety precautions when performing various works to complex aspects of detailing the components and mechanisms of the engine and transmission, is laid out in the manual “on the shelves.” Everything is consistent, everything is clear and understandable.

The material comprehensively provides a step-by-step action plan for many types of service and repair work. But when a car enthusiast is faced with such subtleties of auto mechanics as adjustments and clearances in the engine and gearbox, he should understand that this material can be in demand and is intended only for experienced mechanics in case of complex repairs.

It is clear that, if necessary, any repair of a high degree of complexity will be carried out in a specialized workshop or auto center, where more detailed manuals and instructions are likely to be available. But our “irreplaceable little book” will never be superfluous.

The last pages of the manual contain many diagrams of the mechanical and electrical base of the 2008 Toyota Corolla. There is not much in the electrical diagrams that will be clear even to a middle-class electrician, not to mention the owner himself. But the purpose and current parameters of each insert on the fuse block are often needed when there are fluctuations in the on-board network. This is already quite popular material just for the level of an ordinary car enthusiast.

Of course, no one says that the owner's manual for your favorite car has become a car enthusiast's reference book. After all, breakdowns in this reliable car are extremely rare. But still, “living life is not a field to cross.” Anything can happen!

Tips for use

If the machine is under warranty service, then all work must be carried out only at service stations. Otherwise, you will lose your car warranty. Such situations were encountered by car owners of Toyota Corolla 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, who carried out independent repairs using user books or operating instructions.

It is necessary to take into account that cars of the same model, produced by the plant at almost the same time, have their own characteristics.

  1. Before driving the car, it is necessary to warm up the engine at idle speed, this will avoid its rapid wear. Also, prevent the unit from operating when the tachometer indicator light is red.
  2. You cannot suddenly “start” from a place.
  3. Do not overload the car; such actions inevitably lead to rapid wear of the wheels and suspension.
  4. It is necessary to limit high-speed driving on roads with holes and potholes. This can damage the chassis and body of the car.
  5. It is necessary to monitor tire pressure; lowering it leads to tire wear.
  6. It is important to systematically monitor the condition of the anthers; their unusability leads to rapid wear of the units.
  7. When refueling your car, it is important to use the brand of gasoline recommended by the manufacturer.
  8. It is necessary to monitor the condition of the battery terminals and wires; oxidation of the terminals de-energizes the electronics. Also pay attention that the battery terminals are of different sizes and the wires must be connected in accordance with “+” and “-”.
  9. It is important to follow the deadlines specified for carrying out preventive maintenance on your vehicle.

Traffic safety

It is necessary to follow a number of rules when seating the driver and driving the car:

  • Fasten your seat belt.
  • Make sure that passengers are also wearing their seat belts.

Important: airbags are not a replacement for seat belts; also, in the event of an accident, if the driver and passengers are not fastened, the airbags can cause injury when opened.

  • When transporting children, always use special seats.

You cannot install a child seat in the front seat if the car does not have a safety airbag deactivation function.

  • Place the driver's seat at a distance from which it is easy to reach any place.
  • Adjust the steering wheel most conveniently for you so that you have an overview of the dashboard and control the steering wheel comfortably.
  • Check the free play of all pedals.
  • Drive your car at the speed of traffic, taking into account weather conditions and road surface.

We can see these warnings in the documentation for the 2021 Toyota Corolla with the E 120 body.

Running in a car

When passing the first 1000 km, all the details are worked out. For the safety and long-term operation of the machine, it is recommended to follow a number of rules:

  • Before each trip, check the tire pressure;
  • when the engine is running, the crankshaft rotation should be no more than 4000 rpm;
  • eliminate sudden braking for better working of the pads;
  • there should be no sudden start or sudden braking;
  • during initial operation, the belts are subject to stretching, check the power steering and air conditioning pump, generator;
  • monitor the condition of all fasteners and, if necessary, tighten them tighter;
  • After the first 1000 km, carry out maintenance.

Complete work on the Corolla parts takes place after 3000 km, this is confirmed by any Toyota Corolla repair book.

Operating conditions of the vehicle during the warranty period

Car maintenance during the warranty period is determined by two main aspects:

  • the first run is determined at 1000 km;
  • any breakdowns are repaired at a service station under warranty (paid for by the manufacturer).

During the warranty period of the machine, it is important to follow the rules:

  • do not violate the established criteria for using the machine;
  • Find out initially how all car components operate in different modes (instrument readings, noise, engine starting features, etc.), in order to quickly identify a malfunction and submit a claim to the service station.

It is important to know that a car owner may lose guaranteed service if:

  • violates the requirements specified in the vehicle operating manual;
  • does not comply with the number of kilometers traveled between established maintenance services;
  • the car was damaged as a result of an accident;
  • carries out independent repairs;
  • installs and uses additional equipment not provided by the manufacturer;
  • takes part in high-speed races.

Initial preparation of the car before the trip

Be sure to check all systems and components of the car before driving:

  • look for any fluid leaks under the car;
  • inspect mirrors, windshield wipers, headlights and lanterns;
  • check the mounting of license plates (all lights and license plates must be clean);
  • check if the tires are flat;
  • look at the oil level in the engine, top up if necessary;
  • monitor the level of brake fluid and antifreeze;
  • check the operation of the hand brake;
  • check if the sound signal works;
  • see if the headlights and lanterns are on;
  • check if the windshield washers are working;
  • evaluate the quality of functioning of the brake system.

Tip: If you're going on a long trip, make sure you have a spare tire and equip your car with the necessary tools.

Gas station

Fill with gasoline at least A95; to open the tank lid, you need to pull the lock lever located to the left of the driver’s seat.

Refuel your car only at proven gas stations. If, when driving to a gas station, you see that gasoline has just been delivered, do not rush to refuel your car right away. Not all gas stations have good filters, and it takes time for all the impurities and dirt to settle.

Important! Increased pressure may be created inside the tank; unscrew the cap slowly. If you hear hissing or steam coming out, stop and wait.

Using a jack

If the need arises to use a jack, perform the following actions:

  • disembark all passengers;
  • set first gear to manual transmission or “P” to automatic transmission;
  • set the handbrake;
  • remove the ignition key from the lock;
  • remove the jack from the trunk;
  • if the ground is soft and it is necessary to use a jack, place a support (board, beam) under it;
  • insert the jack lever into the specially provided hole in the body sill.

Do not work under a machine mounted on a jack; if necessary, install additional supports. They need to be installed only in specially designated places on the body and a gasket (rubber or wood) must be installed. A detailed description of such an installation is contained in the Toyota Corolla 150 manual.

Towing

Important! If your car has a catalytic converter, it is prohibited to start it while towing. This threatens overheating and breakdown.

When towing a car, secure the cable to special fastenings:

  • remove the towing hardware from the tool bag;
  • use a special lever to lift the plug in the bumper and remove it;
  • screw in the fastener and secure it with a wrench.

Tow with a flexible cable, otherwise the bumper may be damaged. Before starting towing, unlock the steering wheel by inserting the ignition key. Set the speed to neutral. If the transmission is automatic, set the speed to “N”. If technically possible, tow with the engine running, this will prevent excessive load on the brakes.

Malfunctions

Let's consider possible breakdowns that any driver may encounter.

Motor

Starting an engine with fuel injection is the same at any temperature. The starter turns on without pressing the gas pedal, the system itself chooses how to supply gasoline.

If attempts to start the engine are unsuccessful, there are several options:

  • the starting system is broken;
  • the ignition does not function;
  • there was a failure in the power system.

The engine may also not start if the canister bleed valve is broken or air gets into the fuel hoses.

Starting system

The starter always reports a failure of the starting system; the main causes of failure are:

  • the starter is “silent” - the contacts or traction relay are damaged;
  • a “crackling” sound is heard - the winding is faulty, the battery is discharged, the starter network is weakened;
  • slow rotation - the battery is discharged, the contacts are damaged, the commutator is dirty, the brushes are worn out, the winding is short-circuited;
  • flywheel immobility – fasteners to the clutch are loose, the flywheel or drive gear is broken, the lever or starter drive spring is broken;
  • after turning off the engine, the starter operates in the same mode - the starter clutch is faulty, the contacts are baked.

You must turn off the engine immediately!

The above breakdowns must be repaired at service stations. The Toyota Corolla with a station wagon is characterized by the fact that the driver must independently check how discharged the battery is and how tight the starter chain is.

Important! The car has a high voltage ignition system. Before testing the ignition, set the vehicle to neutral and the handbrake.

Before starting the ignition system, check how secure the coils are. If the circuit is working, check the working condition of the spark plugs. Remove the coil from the spark plug, install a new spark plug into the coil and press its metal side against the ground of the car. Next, check the spark plug with the crankshaft starter. If there is no spark, install another coil. If there is a spark, but the engine is silent, replace the spark plugs with new ones.

After all the steps, if the engine does not start, you need to test the engine control system.

Motor system

The main sign of a working engine is the presence of pressure in the fuel pipe. Initially, it is better to perform a simpler check of the air filter. Next, test the electrical contacts of the injection system, which coordinate the operation of the injector and fuel pump.

To check the pressure in the fuel pipe, you will need a pressure gauge and a set of attachments for it. It is necessary to start the ignition; if there are no sounds of the fuel pump, test its circuit.

A drop in pressure can occur for several reasons:

  • pressure regulator is broken;
  • The fuel pump has failed (the filter is clogged).

Fuel injection system failures

The injection system should be checked systematically:

  • inspect the connection of the battery to the engine;
  • inspect the fuel pump and its filter;
  • check the injection system relays and fuses;
  • make sure that the system wires are tightly fastened;
  • test the working condition of the sensors.

No idle speed

To find out the cause of the breakdown, you need qualified assistance, which can be provided by a service technician. support.

You also need to remember that the causes of breakdowns can be clogging of the throttle valve or air entering through the hose due to weak tightening of the clamps; the throttle sensor will inform the car owner about this. If, after eliminating these faults, idle speed does not appear, be sure to seek professional help.

Malfunctions of the power unit

If the engine exhibits poor performance, the reasons may be the following:

  • idle failures;
  • power does not develop;
  • high gasoline consumption;
  • breakdown of the gas neutralizer.

This entire list of faults is described in the manual for Toyota Corolla 2013, 2014, 2015 with AE91, E120, EE103, E150, NZE121, AE104 bodies, and they are as follows:

  • breakdown of injectors;
  • malfunction of the electric fuel pump;
  • non-working condition of spark plugs;
  • air entering through the cylinder.

If you are not a specialist in this field, then to check and eliminate such malfunctions, you should take the car to a service station; they will be able to fix such breakdowns without fail.

The car drives jerkily

The maximum manifestation of jerky movement of the car is the inhibition of feedback after pressing the gas pedal.

Car owners distinguish three characteristics of jerking:

  • when the car starts moving;
  • at the moment when it accelerates;
  • at a steady speed of its movement.

To identify the reasons for such “jerking” of the machine, you will need special equipment; for this you need to contact a service center that provides such services.

No overclocking

There may be a large list of reasons that prevent you from accelerating a car:

  • engine breakdown;
  • breakdown of the power supply system;
  • ignition system failure;
  • control system failure;
  • breakdown of the gas distribution system;
  • clutch scrolling;
  • breakdown of the brake system;
  • air released from the wheels.

A comprehensive diagnosis of all faults will be carried out by specialists using the required equipment. You can also do some work yourself:

  • level the tire pressure to normal;
  • diagnose the braking system;
  • test the ignition system;
  • diagnose the clutch system.

The engine stalled

Any driver is not immune to the fact that at one moment the engine stops working and a red light is on the dashboard. The first thing you need to do is turn on the emergency lights, depress the clutch and carefully park at the edge of the road.

Important! When the engine is turned off, braking ability is reduced and more force is required to apply pressure to the brake pedal.

After stopping, set the handbrake and warning triangle in accordance with the traffic regulations. Next, try to identify the breakdown. Usually there are two reasons: malfunctions of the power and ignition systems.

Check to see if you've run out of gas. Next, under the hood, check the integrity of all connections, wires, and hoses. Check the antifreeze reservoir for leaks and the presence of oil in the engine. Also examine the integrity of the belt.

It is worth paying attention to the crankshaft sensor and the wires connected to it.

Oil pressure has decreased

In order for the motor to always work, the required pressure must be maintained in it.

Driving a car with low pressure threatens major damage and significant financial costs for repairs.

If the icon on the panel lights up warning of engine failure, you need to stop the car and check the oil:

  • lift the hood, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the crankcase, and assess the integrity of the crankcase body;
  • inspect the oil filter;
  • remove the dipstick, wipe it dry and return it to its place, the lubricant level should be between the two marks (if there is less oil, top up);
  • check the operation of the pressure sensor;
  • start the engine, if the warning sign has disappeared, you are good to go.

If after all the actions performed there is little pressure in the motor, repair is necessary.

Continuing to drive with decreased pressure is dangerous - the engine will break down. The car needs to be towed.

Engine overheating

The cooling system is responsible for maintaining the required temperature of the power unit. If its functions malfunction, the motor overheats, which leads to the need for complex repair work.

There is a cooling temperature indicator on the dashboard. If overheating occurs, the sensor moves to the upper mark.

Checking the cooling system

After turning on the hazard warning lights and stopping the car, the engine needs to run for some time. Next, turn off the engine, lift the hood and check:

  • presence of antifreeze.

Important: open the expansion tank cap very carefully, you may get burned;

  • strength of all hoses.

The reasons for overheating of the power unit are:

  • thermostat failure;
  • fan failure;
  • blown fuse;
  • Fan relay failure.

Most common faults

Car enthusiasts repeatedly face problems such as:

  • The battery does not charge (you need to check the battery itself and the wiring);
  • knocking in the engine;
  • noise in the suspension;
  • steering wheel vibration;
  • breakdown of the brake system.

To fix such problems, the car must be inspected by a professional using special tools.

Wheel puncture

You can repair a punctured wheel yourself using a jack and the necessary keys.

Also, if the wheel is tubeless, it can be brought back into working condition using a special repair kit.
