Wiper and washer control

The wiper and washer control switch operates when the ignition key is in the “ON” position.

1. To turn on and stop the purifier, you must move the switch to one of the positions:

1st position – full stop;

2nd position – intermittent mode;

3rd position – work at low

speed;

4th position – work at high speed;

5th position – single operation of the windshield wiper.

If you turn the bezel while the switch is in the intermittent position, you can adjust the wiper interval from 3 to 12 seconds.

2. To turn on the windshield washer, pull the switch towards you, and after 1 second the windshield wiper turns on for 2 - 3 strokes.

Today, most car owners use fan washer nozzles. Their advantage is that water does not fall onto the windshield in drops or in a couple of jets of liquid, but at once in a large number of small drops, thanks to which most of the glass is immediately covered. This is the main advantage of fan-type wipers, thanks to which the wipers begin to work on wet glass, carefully removing sediment or dirt.

Of course, this ensures the least risk of the wipers leaving scratches on the surface of the glass, since the sweeps will no longer occur on a dry surface. Many car owners also claim that using this type of nozzle reduces windshield washer fluid consumption. The only drawback is their unusual design, which is why they quickly freeze in the cold season, but in this case it is recommended to immediately select and install elements with a heating function.

Accurate fault diagnosis

The first thing that comes to the mind of a car enthusiast who is faced with a washer failure on the road is cleaning the injectors with improvised means. The measure is justified when the nozzle is clogged with the naked eye - removing debris with a needle or pin will take literally a few minutes. But often the failure of nozzles is associated with other reasons:

  1. Malfunction of the electric pump, which does not pump up water when the button is pressed.
  2. Clogged supply pipes.
  3. A banal lack of liquid in the washer reservoir.
  4. Injector failure.

Before you start cleaning the jets, open the hood and make sure there is cleaning fluid. There are different situations: for example, the plastic tank is cracked, water leaks out, and the stain under the car is invisible due to rainy weather. A leak also occurs on the mounting flange of the electric pump.

If you do not hear the characteristic buzzing sound of the pump when you press the lever, immediately try replacing the fuse. Replacing the fuse link did not help - remove and repair the pumping device. Elements with a non-separable design have to be replaced with new ones.

Cleaning injectors

If you notice that the stream of fluid has become weak, it means that the washer nozzles are most likely clogged and it’s time for you to clean them. You can do this yourself; for cleaning you will need: something thin (string, wire, needle or pin), a twenty-cc large syringe, water, soap and a compressor.

You definitely need to check if they are really the problem. To do this, you need to check that there is water in the washer reservoir, then you need to disconnect the hoses that supply fluid and turn on the suction. If there is a good stream from the tubes, this means that you really need to clean them.

  1. After disconnecting the water supply hoses, rinse the nozzle thoroughly with soapy water, and then attach the hose from the compressor back and blow it out.
  2. Fill the syringe with water and thoroughly, in the opposite direction, rinse the nozzle. Carefully clean the nozzle hole with a thin object (for example, a needle, etc.), and then rinse it with water using a syringe.
  3. If your car has a dismountable one, you disassemble it, clean it, and then put it back together and install it.
  4. After installing it back on the car, it is worth flushing the entire system.

If clogging of the elements begins to occur frequently, then the washer barrel itself may be clogged, so check it for debris.

Flushing the tank, removing the fluid supply pump and level sensor

To do these steps, you need to jack up the right front part of the car, remove the wheel and then unscrew the arch liner screws. In the opened niche behind the liner, the body of the tank with a rubber plug at the base will be exposed.

If before the winter period there is still plain water in the washer or the nozzles periodically become clogged, then it should be washed. The plug is removed with little effort, and the liquid completely flows down. After thoroughly washing the tank, everything should be reassembled in reverse order.

Here you can also access the liquid level sensor in the tank and the pump. To check or replace the sensor, simply disconnect the electrical connector and pull the sensor out of the rubber seal. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.

In order to remove the pump, you also need to disconnect the electrical connector and supply hose from it. It is then recommended to drain the liquid from the reservoir. It is not difficult to pull the pump out of the reservoir, overcoming the slight friction of the sealing ring. The pump housing is equipped with a mesh filter, which should not be removed from dirt at least once a season.

How does the washer work?

Regardless of whether you have a 2002 or 2008 hatchback, a 120 or 150 body, the principle of operation of the washer is the same. Hoses are connected to a tank with water or other liquid for cleaning glass; they lead to the windshield; a special tee branches them, supplying jets to the right place. Water is supplied using a small electric pump.

Spraying occurs using nozzles that turn a stream of water into small drops. This helps not only to save fluid, but also to more thoroughly clean the surface of the windshield. In total, the tank can hold no more than 2.5 liters of water.

In order to activate the pump located in the tank, you need to use the switch located under the steering wheel. When the washer fluid hits the glass, the wipers will turn on on their own to remove it along with the debris.
