Toyota has added a new compact crossover, the Toyota Raize 2021, to its model range. The newcomer is a brother of the Daihatsu Rocky SUV shown two weeks ago in Tokyo (the cars have the same platform), but differs from it in a slightly different body design. The new Toyota Raze has become the most affordable SUV with the Toyota logo, but the car certainly cannot be called cheap. A crossover equipped with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine costs at least 1,679,000 yen, which is equivalent to 995 thousand rubles.
Accepting orders in Japan started on November 5, presentations at dealerships will take place in the middle of the month. At first, the compact will be offered exclusively on the domestic market, but in the near future the new model will appear in some countries in Asia and South America. Expansion beyond the island state implies adaptation of Toyota Raize to each specific region. For example, an SUV can increase in size (“TNGA trolley” allows you to easily scale the car) and acquire other power plants, including hybrid ones. One of the main markets for the Raize crossover will certainly be India, where, thanks to its length of only 3995 mm, it will fall into a preferential tax category. In Russia, small dimensions, on the contrary, are out of place, so there is no talk of the model coming to us.
Design and dimensions
Toyota's new miniature SUV looks quite nice both from the front and from the back. The nose is dominated by a large trapezoidal air intake, accompanied by neat headlights. At the stern, attention is drawn to the rectangular trunk lid with beveled lower corners and faceted lights with interesting graphics. There are plastic inserts on the sides of the rear bumper, and in the central area there is a trapezoidal area for a license plate.

The developers have prepared several exterior design lines for the crossover. So, you can choose a sporty, premium or “powerful” style. Each of them involves original decoration of body elements, in particular, the body kit around the perimeter is different. The new Toyota Raize has eight body colors, and three shades can be used in combination with the contrasting Black Mica roof. The car's wheel size is 17 inches; the rims wear 195/60 R17 tires.

With a wheelbase of 2525 mm, the new Toyota Rise is 2995 mm long, 1695 mm wide, and 1620 mm high. Ground clearance does not exceed 185 mm. The minimum weight is 970 kg.
Interior and equipment features
The interior of the new Japanese compact is designed in such a way that all five passengers can be accommodated in a limited space with the proper level of comfort. Particular attention is paid to the ergonomics of the driver's seat - it provides excellent visibility and readability of instruments, and the location of the gearshift lever on the central tunnel is clearly aligned for convenient gear shifting. Plus, the front seats are equipped with noticeable lateral support, while the bolsters and back have padding of different hardness, which contributes to optimal fixation of the rider’s body.

Rear passengers are not offended either - a distance of 900 mm between the rows of seats guarantees a decent amount of legroom. Behind the back there is a spacious luggage compartment with a length of 755 mm and a width of 1000 mm. The height of the load compartment is 740 or 865 mm, depending on the level of the floor. There's also a storage compartment that increases trunk volume from the base 303 liters to 369 liters.
As standard, the new Toyota Raize is equipped rather poorly. The simplest crossover is devoid of a multimedia system (there is a blank instead of a screen), and it has only one button on the steering wheel. But in expensive versions there is a media center with a 9-inch screen (SmartDeviceLink and Apple CarPlay technologies are available), a hand-drawn instrument cluster (digital speedometer combined with a 7-inch color TFT display), climate control, automatic braking in front of cars and pedestrians, adaptive cruise -control, parking assistant.

The budget status of the new crossover is visible in the composition of the materials in the finishing and decorative range; only a few types of fabric and inexpensive plastic are available. The functionality of the on-board multimedia complex and technical equipment is also limited.
The three-tier layout of the center console offers a medium-format multi-mode display, a set of internal ventilation deflectors and a platform with air conditioning settings.
- Already in the initial configuration of the crossover there are advanced characteristics of on-board electronics and security systems.
- The analog instrument panel was successfully replaced with a multi-mode digital panel.
- Future drivers will be pleased with the presence of a traffic monitoring system with an emergency stop function and a set of rear parking sensors.
Some of the command buttons and switches combined into blocks are located on the wide side spokes of the multifunction steering wheel. The narrow tunnel is equipped with several buttons for activating a few options, gearbox and handbrake levers, as well as a folding armrest with a voluminous glove compartment.
The service list for the front seats includes: reliable imitation of lateral support, heated seats and a standard set of operational mechanical adjustments. The three-seater sofa offers the function of converting the middle seat into an armrest.
Thanks to the ergonomic layout of the seats, the new body has increased luggage compartment volume to 303 liters, as well as a spacious compartment built into the floor for a full-size spare wheel and standard tools.

At the start of sales, the new Toyota Rise is offered with a single engine, which is a three-cylinder 1KR-VET turbo unit producing 98 hp. and 140 Nm. The engine is paired with a D-CVT variator, which, in addition to the V-belt mechanism, is equipped with a planetary gear. The gear set provides more powerful and quiet acceleration once the vehicle is moving, as well as increased efficiency at high speeds. Interestingly, a crossover can have not only two driving wheels, but all four. In the second case, the traction distribution is managed by the Dynamic Torque Control 4WD system, which connects the rear axle using a clutch. On average, Toyota Raize consumes about 5.4 liters of fuel per 100 km (WLTC cycle).
At the front, the SUV rests on an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, and at the rear – on a torsion beam. Drum mechanisms are responsible for braking the rear wheels in any version.
The small crossover Toyota Yaris Cross has acquired a new “off-road” version
The Japanese company presented its new subcompact crossover Yaris Cross at the end of April last year, and the first to show the version for the old-world market. At the end of the summer of 2020, a version of the Toyota SUV debuted for the home market. At the same time, the model is already on sale in Japan, and Europeans are still waiting for their version. It is worth recalling that, despite the name, the Yaris Cross is a separate model, and not a cross-version of the latest generation Yaris hatchback.

Now the manufacturer has talked about a new, so-called “off-road” version of the Yaris Cross, which has received the addition of Adventure (translated from English as “adventure”) to the name. This design has a number of visual differences from the “regular” crossover, including: silver elements in the plastic lining on both bumpers, the presence of silver roof rails, and black 18-inch wheels.
Judging by the fact that Toyota decided to keep silent about ground clearance, the figure remained the same - 170 mm. Obviously, calling such a version “off-road” is quite a stretch.
There are also changes to the interior trim: we are talking about a black ceiling, decorative elements of the same color, original seats, a leather steering wheel, as well as a gear lever cover, decorative plastic silver or gold inserts on the panels and doors.

There is also a Toyota Yaris Cross option with the addition of Premiere Edition - it will be sold in Europe within one year after the start of sales of the model. This version from Adventure differs in the design of the wheels, as well as the presence of leather trim on the seats, an electric tailgate (under the bumper there is a sensor that responds to foot movement), a projection screen and a number of other options.

Let us remind you that the subcompact crossover is based on the TNGA GA-B platform. The “filling” of the Adventure and Premiere Edition versions is the same as the basic five-door for Europe. We are talking about a hybrid power plant, which is based on a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine working in tandem with an electric motor and an electromechanical CVT. The total output of the system is 116 hp.
An optional AWD-i all-wheel drive system will be offered: it involves a separate electric motor on the rear axle, its output is 5.3 hp. (torque - 52 Nm). This additional motor is only activated when driving away and during low speed acceleration.
The company's European office has not yet announced prices for the Yaris Cross, including the new Adventure and Premiere Editions. Dealers in the Old World will begin accepting orders for the small SUV at the beginning of the second quarter of this year, and live sales should start in September.
