Unlike internal combustion engines, the timing of changing the oil in the gearbox is not always specified in the operating manual of modern cars. Not all owners know when the next oil change in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado automatic transmission is required. Automakers often characterize their products as maintenance-free. That is, automatic transmission oil, filled on the factory conveyor, is able to retain useful properties during its service life and does not need regular replacement.
Features of maintenance of automatic transmission Prado 150
The statement that there is no need to change the transmission oil in an automatic transmission is partly true and is justified only for cars that have been in use for no longer than 4 years on European roads. Unlike other countries, here a car is purchased for a long time and is used intensively for several decades, while changing owners. For this reason, an oil change in the Prado 150 automatic transmission is required after passing the next 80,000 km.
Depending on the condition of the roads and other operating conditions, this procedure may be carried out much more often. The service life of the gearbox of a popular Japanese SUV directly depends on the frequency of updating the transmission oil. It is much more profitable for the owner of a Toyota Land Cruiser diesel crossover to carry out regular maintenance than repairs and subsequent replacement of expensive spare parts.
Important: The figure of 80,000 km is valid when operating the vehicle on country roads. If an SUV spends a lot of time in city traffic jams and often stops at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, the automatic transmission is subject to the greatest loads. At the same time, it is necessary to change the ATF transmission oil much more often - almost twice. This also applies to crossovers operated in off-road conditions (potholes, potholes, mud, snow drifts, ice, etc.).
Equipment for changing the oil in a Toyota Prado 120 automatic transmission
To change the lubricant, you need to prepare the following equipment:
- a container into which the old liquid is drained;
- several rags;
- plastic containers (5 l);
- sharp thin knife;
- socket wrenches 10 and 17 with ratchet;
- a tube 2 m long with an internal diameter of 10 mm.
On the Prado 120, it is also impossible to replace old oil in the automatic transmission without pliers, a pan gasket, an oil filter for the automatic gearbox, and sealant.
Which oil is suitable for TOYOTA PRADO 150 transmission
The choice of transmission oil for a Toyota Prado 150 automatic transmission should be based on the recommendations of the automaker. The service book for the car contains information about the use of branded ATF oil of the TOYOTA WS brand or its substitute TOYOTA T-IV. A complete oil change in the Toyota Prado 150 automatic transmission is carried out using special branded SST equipment. It is especially good to use this device when following a maintenance schedule when switching from one type of oil to another. In particular, from ATF TYPE-IV oil to ATF WS, respectively, since these brands are not compatible and cannot be mixed.
Important: TOYOTA WS transmission oil must be stored in dry areas, as this substance intensively absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Under the influence of corrosion, parts and components of an SUV's transmission quickly deteriorate and fail.
Technical parameters of ATF WS oil:
- Viscosity index – 219 ISO 2909.
- The permissible ambient temperature range is from –50 to +50°C.
- The color is characteristic red.
What kind of oil to pour into Prado 120 4 liters
The instruction manual says that it is better to fill in the original one. This is a gasoline engine and takes the Toyota Genuine Motor Oil brand well. It is also possible to use universal energy-saving motor fluid of SL and SJ classes or special ILSAC lubricant.
It is recommended to take into account the oil viscosity level. If you fill in engine fluid with 10w-30, 15w-40 or 20w-50, then at low temperatures the engine will have difficulty working. And if the temperature is below +8 degrees, then 5w-30 liquid is suitable.
Which oil filter to choose
When changing the oil in an automatic transmission in a Toyota Prado, it is necessary to dismantle the used, contaminated oil filter to a new position. The original filter has article number 04152-31050. This filter element model is used only for Toyota Prado 150 automatic transmissions. In addition to the proposed model, elements marked: 04152-YZZA5 or 15600-41010 are also suitable for Prado.
Method for replacing and checking the oil level in an automatic transmission Prado 150
When changing the oil in the automatic transmission, it is recommended to completely get rid of the remnants of the old lubricant so as not to disturb the viscosity of the new lubricant. To completely update the oil in a Toyota Land Cruiser automatic transmission, you need to prepare:
- container for heated old oil (galvanized iron bucket);
- polyhedron by 6;
- spanners;
- new oil filter;
- gaskets, seals;
- cotton rags.
To ensure better fluidity of the working fluid, you need to warm up the transmission oil in the gearbox before starting work. It is best to start the engine and drive a few kilometers. After this you need to do the following:
- Drive the SUV onto the overpass.
- Apply the brake.
- Place a bucket under the drain hole.
- Unscrew the plug and drain the waste fluid.
- Remove the pallet.
- Drain the oil and clean the surface of deposits (you can use gasoline).
- Remove the oil filter.
- Before installing a new filter element, it is recommended to treat the sealing ring with new oil (this will protect the rubber from premature cracking).
- Install a new oil filter.
- Place a new gasket on a clean automatic transmission sump.
- Secure the pallet assembly to the installation location.
- Check the amount of used oil drained.
- Fill the gearbox with new fluid through the filler hole (its volume must correspond to the oil removed).
- Screw the plug.
Finally, you need to turn on the diesel engine and move the automatic transmission selector through all modes with slight delays in each gear. This is done to distribute the oil evenly throughout the automatic transmission. Then the control plug located on the crankcase is unscrewed. A small amount of oil should flow out of the open hole. This indicates a normal level of filled working material. If there are no drops of lubricant, the missing fluid must be added.
Attention: The procedure for changing the oil in a Toyota Prado 150 automatic transmission is a rather complex operation. If you do not have the proper experience and certain skills, it is recommended to contact a service center. At specialized service stations, experienced specialists will carry out:
- thorough vehicle diagnostics,
- checking the level and condition of the ATP transmission fluid;
- complete or partial oil change in the automatic transmission in accordance with the recommendations of the car manufacturer.
How to change
Before pouring new oil fluid into the Prado 120 4 liter, you need to remove the old one. To do this, you need to drive the car into a pit, warm up the engine a little, turn it off and put the handbrake on. It is also recommended to put chocks under the wheels. To further protect yourself, it is advised to remove the terminals from the battery.
Where the bottom cover of the engine crankcase is located, there is a drain plug. Unscrew it while wearing gloves to avoid burning your hands with hot liquid. Place an empty waste container under the hole (make sure it is not too small).
When all the old fluid has poured out, the system needs to be flushed with a special solution or additives that will “drive” old grease and other sediment out of the engine. To do this, pour a flushing agent into the Prado 120 engine and start the car briefly several times. If clean lubricant starts coming out of the drain, it means the motor has been flushed and you can fill in a new one.
It is important to know how much oil there should be in a 4-liter Toyota Prado 120 engine. The gasoline engine of this model requires from 4.9 to 5.2 liters of oil; for other volumes the amount differs.
Pour oil into the Prado 120 engine, carefully checking all the plugs, and then warm up the engine at idle speed. After this, you need to measure the volume of oil in the engine 4 liters with a dipstick. The liquid can be distributed throughout the Prado 120 engine, which will reduce the main level. In this case, you should simply add the missing amount of oil.
Oil filter Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120
Which oil filter to buy for Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120: insert or housing? The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 oil filter is purchased together with engine oil to replace them. No one does an engine oil change without changing the oil filter. When to change the oil filter is indicated in the vehicle's owner's manual. Depending on the model, I change the oil and filter at mileage from 10 to 15 thousand km. Less often, this is not worth doing.
Oil filter Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 is needed for normal engine operation and prevents its parts from premature wear. During operation, the engine is subjected to enormous, if not excessive, loads. This leads to microparticles constantly falling off. What happens to the fuel that gets into the engine? It burns. Where does the soot end up? Soot gets into the engine oil. And instead of lubricant in the form of motor oil, this mixture of abrasive particles, dust and combustion products enters the engine. Conclusion:
To avoid engine repairs, change the oil and oil filter in accordance with the regulations.

Partial oil change
During a partial replacement, the old fluid is drained from the transmission sump, and the transmission sump cover and filter are dismantled. All this is thoroughly cleaned, and if necessary, a new oil filter is installed.
Then they install everything in the reverse order, install a new pan gasket or apply sealant. Then you need to fill in new lubricant (the engine is turned off) and set the oil fluid level. Then the engine is started (on gasoline or diesel), and a certain amount of lubricant is added to bring its level to the maximum level.
On an automatic transmission, you need to check and add lubricant to the level while the engine is running.
Disadvantage of partial replacement: approximately half of the old oily substance from the transmission will not drain and will remain in its working parts.
