Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 – automatic transmission oil change

The third generation of the legendary mid-size Japanese SUV Toyota Land Cruiser Prado J120, produced by the famous automaker from 2002 to 2009, received the most expanded arsenal of power units. Having gone through a planned restyling in 2005, this model range acquired a new 5-speed automatic transmission, which joined the 4-speed automatic transmission already installed on these vehicles. At the same time, Prado 120 automatic transmission oil is selected according to factory specifications, which we will talk about in this article.

How to change the oil and check its level

Changing the oil in a Prado 150 automatic transmission is not the simplest or easiest thing, but this can be done not only in a specialized auto repair shop, where there is all the necessary equipment for this, but also in a garage, but for this you will have to try and spend a lot of time.
It is worth knowing some of the structural features of the Prado 50 automatic transmission. The fact is that the automatic transmission pan is equipped with special magnets, which are needed to attract the largest particles of metal debris. If small chips come out along with the used oil, then large particles or even broken gears should be looked for in the pan.

It is important to drain the old oil completely, since the new one will have a different density, and when mixing such liquids, the division inside the box will be disrupted, which will lead to its malfunction. For the same reason, oils of different types and manufacturers should not be mixed. The oil change in the Prado 150 automatic transmission must be completed completely: for this you will need to purchase about 8 liters of fluid

The oil change in the Prado 150 automatic transmission must be completed completely: for this you will need to purchase about 8 liters of fluid.

Only 4 liters can be drained. If the car has low mileage, the system can be flushed. If the mileage is high, it is better to leave everything as is and replace only the oil that was removed.

In order to change the oil, you will need a container to receive the used fluid. The oil is drained hot, so be careful with your hands and use a metal bucket. You will also need 14, 24 and 10 sockets. Arm yourself with a 6 hex and prepare in advance the oil filter, seal ring for the transmission filter, gasket for the drain plug and a new gasket for the pan. Don't be alarmed if it's rubber and the factory one is metal: that's how it should be.

Before you start working, you need to warm up the oil: this will ensure better fluidity. Simply warming up the engine is useless, so it's best to drive the car a few blocks

Place the car over the hole and secure it. Using a 14mm socket, unscrew the drain plug and collect the old oil in a bucket. After the oil has drained, take a 10mm socket and unscrew the bolts that secure the automatic transmission pan, after which you can remove the filter. The oil from the pan must also be poured out and, if necessary, the pan must be cleaned with gasoline.

Removing the automatic transmission filter

  • Toyota Highlander: automatic transmission oil change

Before installing a new filter, its O-ring is lubricated with fresh oil: this is done so that the rubber does not dry out.

The filter must be installed carefully. The clean pan is then put back in place, replacing the gasket on it. You need to tighten the central bolts first, then those at the edges.

You need to tighten the central bolts first, then those at the edges.

Before adding new oil, you need to check how much has been drained. If you don’t know how to check the oil level of a Prado 150 automatic transmission, proceed as follows: using a 24mm socket, you need to press out the drain plug. This will make it possible to see how much oil has been drained.

After this, you can begin to pour liquid into the filler hole until its level reaches its maximum again. Changing the Prado automatic transmission oil requires the following procedure: after it is filled and the plug is tightened, you need to start the car and switch all gearbox modes. After this, you need to unscrew the check plug with a 6-point head: if everything is done correctly, the oil will flow out in a thin stream. If this does not happen, you need to add more fluid. After this, the filler plug can be clamped. You can check the level more accurately at a service station using a scanner. Changing the oil in an automatic transmission of a Toyota Prado 150 is a relatively complex procedure, so if you have doubts that you can do it correctly, it is better to contact a service station.

Types of transmission lube replacement in an automatic transmission

The following types of this procedure are known:

The complete process of replacing the lubricant in the box is usually carried out using a special stand. The work of such a rack is that it is connected to a system that circulates a meaty substance in the gearbox, pumping fluid under pressure. In a continuous process, old lubricant is removed and new lubricant is added. A complete replacement of lubricant on a Prado 120/150 modification also involves replacing the filter element. If the car has a variator type gearbox, then replacing the transmission substance is no different from a standard automatic gearbox. The changes concern only the type and composition of the lubricant used. It is a little more expensive, but guarantees a long service life of the motor and its safety.

Important! It is not recommended to continuously change the transmission lubricant in the automatic transmission if the car has a mileage of more than 120 thousand kilometers.

Maintenance of a Japanese SUV: draining and filling transmission lubricant

During the work you will need:

  • container for draining waste liquid (up to 20 liters);
  • clean rags;
  • 5-liter plastic bottles;
  • sharp blade;
  • ratchet with thermal head 10 and 17;
  • pliers with one or two pairs of toothed grooves for gripping and turning cylinder parts;
  • pallet seal;
  • oil filter element for automatic transmission;
  • fresh transmission fluid (up to 16 liters);
  • hose 2 meters long and 10 mm in diameter;
  • sealing agent.

When to change

An erroneous opinion arises from the manufacturer’s statement that the gearbox is filled with oil at the factory for the entire period of operation. On the one hand, this statement is true, and the gearbox will serve “faithfully and truly” throughout the warranty period, but this only applies to those owners who do not use the car longer than the warranty. Those happy owners of Toyota Prado who purchase a car for a year are recommended to do differently - take care of the car and provide high-quality service, which of course it deserves.

The more often the oil is changed, the longer the gearbox parts will last. And given the cost of spare parts for the Toyota Prado 150, quality service for a manual transmission/automatic transmission will cost less than a complete transmission replacement.

What is the replacement interval? If the car is mostly used in urban environments, or is subjected to more extreme use and experiences heavy loads, it is recommended to replace it every 40,000 km.

If the car is more often used on country roads with high-quality surfaces, when the average speed is 2-3 times higher than the average speed in city traffic, then an oil change can be done after 60-80,000 km.

  • Changing the oil in automatic transmission Honda Accord 8

The oil filter is changed with every second oil change or every 80,000 km.

The service life of the Prado gearbox is 150 – 300,000 km, and this is only possible thanks to high-quality maintenance and moderate loads. Also, by the way, it is worth noting one important fact, which was mentioned at one of the presentations by a representative of the manufacturer of transmissions for Toyota vehicles, that the company, as a manufacturer of Aisin transmissions, recommends changing the oil in the gearbox after 20,000 km, or every second maintenance.

When to replace it, of course, depends on how dear the car is to you, but changing it every 40,000 km is a more humane solution in modern realities.

Objectives of motor oils

But in order for the machine to serve for a long time and efficiently, it requires appropriate care. One of the main conditions for maintaining engine performance is the timely replacement of engine and transmission oils and other consumables. Not every car owner knows what oils to pour into a Toyota Prado 150 with a diesel engine, which is why problems often arise and require contacting a car service center. Maintaining such a car is not cheap, so every visit to a service station costs the owner a large sum. Timely replacement and competent selection of engine oil for a Toyota Prado allows you to:

  • maintain the functionality of all engine elements;
  • cool the system;
  • ensure the operation of other components associated with the power unit;
  • maintain an optimal level of working fluids;
  • maintain the original engine power;
  • guarantee high vehicle dynamics;
  • prevent serious damage and costly repairs.

Therefore, it is important for Toyota Prado owners to monitor the condition of the car, change the engine oil on time and use only formulations recommended by the manufacturer

Oil change tools

Before starting the procedure for replacing transmission fuel, you will need a container to drain the used fluid, oil, pliers, a screwdriver, a wrench, sealant, and a clean rag. Also, a pan gasket and a filter element for the gearbox are required.

The sequence for a complete oil change in an automatic transmission in a Prado:

  1. The warmed-up car is placed on a flat surface.
  2. A container is installed under the car where the fuel will drain.
  3. The drain plug, which is located at the bottom of the box housing, is unscrewed. The liquid drains for about 20 minutes.
  4. The oil pan is removed. As a rule, some oil remains in it, you need to be extremely careful.
  5. Any remaining oil in the pan must be removed. You should use a special cleaning liquid specifically for this purpose.
  6. The sealant is cleaned from the pan, its surface is rubbed with a rag.
  7. The bolts that secure the oil filter are unscrewed (it needs to be replaced).
  8. A new pan gasket is installed.
  9. The drain plug is screwed in.
  10. New oil is poured through a special hole.
  11. A hose is connected to the heat exchanger pipe, which is connected to the radiator, and its other end is lowered into the waste container.
  12. The engine starts and the “P” mode is activated. This will cause ATP to spread throughout the system and then drain away. Next, tighten the drain plug and add new lubricant.

This procedure allows you to achieve effective cleaning of the internal mechanisms of the gearbox. After replacing the fuel, the box will experience smooth acceleration and braking.

Which oil filter to choose

When changing the oil in an automatic transmission in a Toyota Prado, it is necessary to dismantle the used, contaminated oil filter to a new position. The original filter has article number 04152-31050. This filter element model is used only for Toyota Prado 150 automatic transmissions. In addition to the proposed model, elements marked: 04152-YZZA5 or 15600-41010 are also suitable for Prado.

Method for replacing and checking the oil level in an automatic transmission Prado 150

  • container for heated old oil (galvanized iron bucket);
  • polyhedron by 6;
  • spanners;
  • new oil filter;
  • gaskets, seals;
  • cotton rags.

To ensure better fluidity of the working fluid, you need to warm up the transmission oil in the gearbox before starting work. It is best to start the engine and drive a few kilometers. After this you need to do the following:

  1. Drive the SUV onto the overpass.
  2. Apply the brake.
  3. Place a bucket under the drain hole.
  4. Unscrew the plug and drain the waste fluid.
  5. Remove the pallet.
  6. Drain the oil and clean the surface of deposits (you can use gasoline).
  7. Remove the oil filter.
  8. Before installing a new filter element, it is recommended to treat the sealing ring with new oil (this will protect the rubber from premature cracking).
  9. Install a new oil filter.
  10. Place a new gasket on a clean automatic transmission sump.
  11. Secure the pallet assembly to the installation location.
  12. Check the amount of used oil drained.
  13. Fill the gearbox with new fluid through the filler hole (its volume must correspond to the oil removed).
  14. Screw the plug.

Finally, you need to turn on the diesel engine and move the automatic transmission selector through all modes with slight delays in each gear. This is done to distribute the oil evenly throughout the automatic transmission. Then the control plug located on the crankcase is unscrewed. A small amount of oil should flow out of the open hole. This indicates a normal level of filled working material. If there are no drops of lubricant, the missing fluid must be added.

Attention: The procedure for changing the oil in a Toyota Prado 150 automatic transmission is a rather complex operation. If you do not have the proper experience and certain skills, it is recommended to contact a service center. At specialized service stations, experienced specialists will carry out:

  • thorough vehicle diagnostics,
  • checking the level and condition of the ATP transmission fluid;
  • complete or partial oil change in the automatic transmission in accordance with the recommendations of the car manufacturer.

Oil change process

In order to independently change the gearbox oil in a Toyota Prado car, you will need:

  • Checking the level and changing the oil in the automatic transmission of a Toyota Corolla car

  • capacity for processing - from 5 liters;
  • clean cloth napkins;
  • ratchet with heads 10 and 17;
  • pliers;
  • sealing gasket for the pallet;
  • new oil filter - if necessary;
  • two cans of transmission fluid - about 16 liters;
  • hose;
  • sealant.

You should approach the choice of oil responsibly - it is better to use the original fluid for Toyota Land Cruiser Prado: Toyota T-IV or the more common Toyota WS. Available analogue: Toyota Genuine ATF WS oil.

The entire procedure for changing oil from a Toyota automatic transmission occurs in three stages: draining the transmission fluid, washing the pan and filling in a new solution.

Before starting work, it is recommended to drive the car to warm up the liquid in the box. This is necessary for better flow of the solution. Also, the work will require a pit or overpass. At the height of the vehicle, the driver will have free access to the unit.

If you need to repair a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150, there is no need to place the car in a pit, since the car has high ground clearance, which allows you to carry out all the manipulations under the pallet on a flat surface.

Draining old oil from the tank

Procedure for draining transmission fluid:

  1. Unscrew the crankcase drain plug and place a container;
  2. Drain the old oil from the Land Cruiser Prado automatic transmission. Approximately 11 liters of used lubricant will be released within 10-15 minutes;
  3. Start dismantling the oil pan: Unscrew the bolts and remove the protection;
  4. Unscrew the drain valve, first replacing the container;
  5. Allow the remaining solution to drain from the pan.

Before adding new fluid and installing a new filter, you need to rinse the pan and clean it of dirt.

Washing the tray and removing chips

The surface of the pan can be wiped with a clean rag previously soaked in gasoline. All sealant applied around the perimeter of the crankcase can be removed with a knife.

To flush the system more thoroughly, screw the filler valve back into place and pour in a special flushing agent or new oil through the inspection hole. The washing process is necessary in order to completely remove from the box any remaining carbon deposits and grease that could not drain.

After the flush is poured into the box, you need to start the engine and drive through all gear positions for 5-10 minutes. Then turn off the engine and drain the flushing agent.

Changing the automatic transmission oil on a Toyota Prado 150 diesel using an automatic transmission involves a complete fluid change and a thorough stage of washing the pan.

Filling with new oil

After expelling the chips from the box, you can replace the filtration. To do this, you need to unscrew the fixing bolts and replace the old device with a new one.

Progress:

  1. Install a new pan seal and coat it with a sealing agent;
  2. Fix the pallet in place;
  3. Pour new transmission fluid through the filler hole through the hose;
  4. Remove the lower pipe from the radiator heat exchanger and insert the hose;
  5. Start the car and set the transmission to mode P;
  6. Release 4.5 liters of oil, turn off the engine and add the same amount of fluid. To completely change the oil, you will have to run about 16 liters of transmission fluid;
  7. Close the filler plug and start the engine;
  8. Warm up the fluid in the gearbox by shifting the gear selector;
  9. Check the fluid level using the dipstick. Top up if necessary.

Replacing transmission fluid in a Toyota Prado 150 and 120 is identical. If you strictly follow the instructions, you can cope with such work alone.

Choosing an oil brand:

If the Prado 120 automatic transmission is four-speed, Toyota ATF T IV brand oil is suitable for replacement. For five- and six-speed gearboxes – Toyota ATF Type WS, respectively. According to operating conditions, the recommended transmission fluid replacement interval for the Prado 120 automatic transmission is 60 - 80 thousand km of distance traveled. The required amount of consumables is from 12 to 16 liters.

When purchasing a car from a foreign manufacturer, many car owners do not understand: is it really necessary to carry out this technical manipulation in the automatic transmission of the Prado 120 or follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and refuse to carry out this technical manipulation. It is sometimes difficult to understand this issue on your own, since the manufacturer claims that the transmission fluid is poured into the gearbox for its entire service life. However, do not rush to rejoice and refuse to replace the TM.

The oil change in the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado automatic transmission must be done due to operating conditions in Russia.

The problem is that the manufacturer is confident that the vehicle will be in operation for no more than four years, during which time it will cover no more than one hundred thousand kilometers. Of course, the oil poured in at the factory, with such operational calculations, will have normal characteristics, ensuring the correct operation of the gearbox. Unfortunately, in our country, cars are subject to more extreme use; certainly, most vehicle owners do not even think about changing their car after four years of operation. And even more so, none of them is considering the issue of introducing a new gearbox due to the end of its technical life. It will be much easier to ensure that the automatic transmission lasts a long time, ensuring the normal operation of your car.

What kind of oil to fill

For the R150F manual 5-speed gearbox, the recommended transmission oil type is GL-4 or GL-5 API class with SAE 75W-90 viscosity. For GL-4 or GL-5, the best analogue may be: in moderate climates - Durablend GO GL-4 75W-90 and Neste Hypoidi S 75W-90, in cold climates up to -40 - SynPower Gear Oil TDL 75W-90. But the original is still preferable.

For the 4-speed automatic transmission of the Prado 120 A340E, it is recommended to use Toyota ATF T IV oil (recommended Toyota ATF Type T-IV 08886-01705). For 5-speed automatic transmissions Aisin A650E and A750E - Toyota ATF Type WS: TOYOTA ATF WS (4 liter metal can - 08886-02305, 1 liter metal can - 08886-80807, 1 liter black plastic can - 00289-ATFWS).

If you wish or have the opportunity to fill in similar transmission fluid from other manufacturers, we recommend choosing from the best oils that have a good rating and positive reviews. Analogues of Toyota Type WS for automatic transmission:

Top oils for 2021

Transmission units usually use the 75W-90 type. These are universal and common options, characterized by sufficient temperature viscosity and fluidity in cold conditions. Below we consider a number of oils that are rated by various resources.

  • Motul Gear 300. Synthetic ester-based oil classified by the manufacturer as GL-4/GL-5. Due to the high strength of the film formed, which can withstand heavy loads in comparison with analogues, it has one of the highest welding rates in its class. The Gear 300's durability is certified to MIL-L-2105D. Based on the parameters shown, this option is recommended for high-end models. For Russian conditions, a good indicator of low-temperature fluidity is valuable. Among the top gear oils there is also a semi-synthetic version from the manufacturer - Motylgear.
  • Castrol Syntrax Universal Plus. Close in load resistance to Motul at a lower cost. This option has greater high-temperature viscosity. However, low temperature viscosity is higher than Motul. Based on this, the considered Castrol model is considered optimal in terms of cost and performance ratio.
  • ZIC GF Top. Characterized by high levels of low-temperature fluidity and load resistance. Users note a reduction in noise in transmission units, which indicates good anti-friction properties. Compared to premium analogues, ZIC has a low cost.
  • Total Trans SYN FE. Complies with GL-4/GL-5 standards. It has high thermal stability and viscosity index, and a long interval between replacements. The oil remains fluid at low temperatures and does not thin out at high temperatures, which provides protection against corrosion and wear.
  • Liqui Moly Hypoid-Getriebeoil TDL. Semi-synthetic with double approval, suitable for all types of drives. It is characterized by good anti-wear and anti-friction properties at a relatively low cost. In reviews, owners especially note the protection against corrosion. However, this option will have to be replaced more often. The manufacturer's range includes Hochleistungs-Getriebeoil with effective anti-friction properties and stable viscosity. The latter provides fuel savings.
  • Mobil Mobilube 1 SCH. It has anti-scuff properties and is compatible with synchronizers made of non-ferrous metals. High levels of film strength, welding load and scuffing, which are important in difficult conditions, were noted. In average conditions it is superior to Motul. However, when heated, the viscosity drops sharply, and in cold weather it is higher than that of Castrol.
  • THK Trans Gipoid Super. Among inexpensive semi-synthetic oils, it has decent characteristics. Complies with the GL-5 standard and, judging by reviews, retains sufficient fluidity at temperatures down to -25 ° C, which is 10 ° below the limit indicated by the manufacturer. Users note good corrosion protection. However, this oil is poorly compatible with non-ferrous metals.

How to check the oil level in a Prado box

It is imperative to regularly check the fluid level in the system - it may evaporate ahead of schedule or lose its original technical characteristics. Both points go unnoticed by the motorist if he does not perform routine checks of the fluid level in the system. It is convenient to use a dipstick; if you don’t have one, measure the level with your finger.

How to check:

  1. Clean the area around the dipstick so that contaminants do not penetrate into the system.
  2. Warm up the engine by driving the car for about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the oil dipstick, carefully wipe it with a lint- and thread-free cloth, and return it to its place.
  4. Remove the dipstick again for 5 seconds and evaluate its readings.

The frequency of such tests is every 10 thousand km. The procedure will not take much time, so the need for it should not be ignored.

The black or brown tint of waste indicates that it has lost its original qualities

If there is little substance, top up - for example, using a syringe, funnel or hose. Any impurities, changes in aroma or shade indicate that the product is not in order and needs to be replaced.

Important! When changing from one type of lubricant to another, if the waste is heavily contaminated, it is advisable to make a complete replacement, since a partial update simply will not help.

When to change the transmission fluid in an automatic transmission?

Automatic transmission Toyota Prado 120

To a large extent, the service life of the Toyota Prado 120 transmission depends on its correct and timely maintenance. In particular, the car owner should not adhere to an aggressive driving style. The automatic transmission on Toyota does not withstand high temperatures. Because of this, the oil begins to foam, which leads to a decrease in its lubricating properties. The reason for foaming may also lie in the fact that a low-quality liquid was used.

The change in oil properties is affected by the rhythm of movement. The fact that there is a need to replace the fluid in the automatic transmission can be indicated by the appearance of a hum or noise from the transmission.

It is not recommended to drive if the transmission fluid has changed color or is deficient. First of all, the friction clutches suffer from this. When exposed to high temperatures, they become very hot, charred, and as a result, the fuel becomes contaminated.

Shocks when shifting gears may be due to the fact that the gearbox oil is contaminated and needs to be changed. Otherwise, the metal shavings present in its composition will settle on the oil filter, and if it is clogged, the car will accelerate worse and the speed will drop. For preventive purposes, it is necessary to monitor the level of oil poured into the gearbox.

One of the common signs that there is insufficient oil in the box is slipping. If there is an excess of it, the liquid can bake through the breather. All this leads to rapid wear of the box components.

Changing automatic transmission oil Prado 120 - logbook Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Fierce PRADOS 2003 on DRIVE2

Hello everyone. The other day I decided to change the oil in the automatic transmission (with dipstick), since I didn’t have enough time myself and had to take it to a service center.

1. First, we drained the oil from the transmission pan; there is one plug through which everything drains. After about 20 minutes they began to remove the pallet itself. Since the oil had been changed previously and sealant was used instead of a gasket, I had to tinker a little to remove the pan.

Full size

Pallet with dipstick after removal

Also, minor difficulties arose due to the probe, which is inconveniently located since it is attached to the inlet. Removing the pan took no more than 15 minutes. Then they removed the old filter; it was very dirty. Waited until all the leftovers drained. Then we screwed on the new filter.

New filter in place

Please note when ordering a filter that there is a gasket. Toyota ATF 6 oil. and I ordered a filter from Krasnodar through a friend, I also received it without a gasket

I also ordered a filter from Krasnodar through a friend and also received it without a gasket.

I had to use the sealant again. After removing the pan, I started cleaning it, since there was sealant there. It is best to use an unnecessary knife for their convenience. After removing the sealant, I pulled out the magnets and wiped them free of dirt, and did the same with the inside of the pallet itself. For this I needed old rags that Bond-31 gave me, for which I thank him very much. Which, by the way, was changing the pads on his Surf at that time. We did not use any solvents or acetone. They just wiped everything dry. Then they applied a small layer of new sealant and waited 10 minutes. Then we started screwing the pallet. Don't forget to put the magnets back where they are needed. They tightened the pan according to the principle of baiting, then tightening everything up.

We gave it 15 minutes for the sealant to set and poured 5 liters of oil through the dipstick using a pump. Then we started the engine and drove the automatic transmission through different positions. I immediately noticed the difference, everything switches without kicking. In a couple of days I'll go to the service center to check for oil leaks. After 60 t.km. I’ll come back for a repeat procedure, but without replacing the filter)

What kind of oil is in the Prado box

The oil in the Toyota Prado 120 automatic transmission should be selected taking into account the manufacturer’s recommendations. The optimal choice is the original T-IV or WS.

Important! The service book for the car states that the optimal product for Toyota Prado is WS fluid. Since the price for it is quite high, drivers are starting to look for analogues. For self-replacement, it is recommended to use the SST device, with which you can completely replace the transmission lubricant without unnecessary difficulties

But if there is no SST, you can get by with a more limited set of tools

For self-replacement, it is recommended to use the SST device, which can be used to completely replace the transmission lubricant without unnecessary difficulties. But if there is no SST, you can get by with a more limited set of tools.

High-quality lubrication ensures trouble-free operation of the working parts of the automatic transmission. So ATF WS from Toyota guarantees:

  • maximum efficiency indicators;
  • increased service life of the box;
  • preservation of original properties throughout the entire service life.

The lubricant must be stored correctly, otherwise it will begin to change its original properties. The recommended viscosity index is 219 ISO 2909; violation of this requirement may result in a reduction in the service life of the gearbox. The freezing temperature is -50 degrees, the maximum permissible operational indicator is +50. Fresh oil has a characteristic red tint. Checking the level will help you understand whether replacement is needed or not. If there is a shortage of fluid, top up; if the lubricant is dark and contains foreign inclusions, it will need to be completely replaced. If possible, it is recommended to wash the pan.

Important! Recommendations for choosing oil are contained in any operating manual for the car.

Selecting transmission fuel for an automatic transmission

Toyota WS

For 5-automatic transmissions, it is recommended to use Toyota WS gear oil. It effectively lubricates the rubbing parts of the box, has an optimal degree of viscosity, and has an extended service life. How many liters of oil should be added to the Prado automatic transmission?

In the case of a partial replacement, it takes about 5 liters, 2 times more is required for a full change, as a rule, it is required after 100,000 km.

Complete oil change in automatic transmission Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 — ShellAutoExpress on DRIVE2

This legendary SUV is well known to our mechanics, does not cause any complaints from the owners and does not require anything other than regular maintenance and careful attention to the units. As our mechanics say, why do you need a “cash cow” if the Japanese invented the Toyota Land Cruiser. 120 body was equipped with a 5-speed manual and 4, later 5-speed automatic transmission. Prados with “mechanics” are rare. There are no complaints about the “automatic machine”. Some owners complain about the appearance of shocks when switching. Moreover, this is noted on cars older than 4 years. A complete, that is, hardware change of the oil in the box helps to get rid of the shocks. This method allows you to wash the gearbox mechanism itself from many years of sludge, carbon deposits and deposits, as well as change the oil in the torque converter. An automatic transmission needs hardware replacement much less often than a partial one. This is necessary primarily in the following situations:• when purchasing a car with an unknown history;• when the car has a mileage of more than 100,000 km;• when the units are operating in overheating mode;

• if a problem occurs when shifting gears.

To completely displace the old ATF and flushing composition, it is necessary to pump one and a half or double volume of fresh technical fluid through the box. Another amount of liquid is lost when replacing the box filter. To carry out a complete oil change, a special installation is required that provides accurate dosage of ATF and automatically records the volume of drained fluid to accurately calculate the replacement volume.

The stages of work are as follows:

1. Hoses of the flushing unit are connected to the cooling radiators; 2. The car engine starts; 3. Oil is drained under pressure; 4. The drained liquid is monitored;5. The installation elements are disconnected and the box is returned to its original technical condition;6. New oil is poured in exactly the volume that was forcibly removed;

7. The oil replacement procedure is now complete, but the full effect will only come after replacing the oil filter (cost 1,950 rubles). To do this, you need to remove the pan (the same as with a partial replacement), clean it and the magnets that collect metal debris, replace the filter, install a new gasket (price 754 rubles) and use the installation to add the amount of oil that is lost when removing the pan . Afterwards, you can turn off the installation, restore all connections and start the engine to check the oil level through the dipstick. If everything is in order, then the procedure is completed;

The procedure takes about an hour and is inexpensive, only 5,000 rubles. The main component of the cost of the procedure is the price of fresh oil, which is spent on flushing the system. On average, this procedure requires double the volume of ATF in a dry automatic transmission. In our case, 12 liters of ATF were consumed. But you need to remember that the money spent on flushing is much less than the possible costs of a full automatic transmission repair.

Complete automatic transmission oil change for Toyota LC Prado 120. — DRIVE2

Good afternoon

Today my friend Kirill came to see me to change the automatic transmission oil of the A750F Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120. The case is similar with the VAG 09G. It is also drained and filled through plugs in the pan, or rather, a turnkey plug 24 is poured from the side of the box, but this is more convenient for me.) Only different, one for draining, the other for filling with a measuring tube in the pan. We drain everything, remove the pan, and wash it. About 4.5-5 liters will drain. Change the filter, place a clean pan and pump in oil. As much as I drained + 200-250 grams. Then we open the hood, there is an automatic transmission radiator. We remove the upper hose and leave it to rest, and stretch a 10mm hose onto the radiator tube. We fill our device with another 6 liters of oil. We turn it on P and old dirty oil will flow from the hose. Pour about 1 liter into a transparent container and immediately add fresh water into the box through the machine. and this happened 6 times. At the end it poured almost like new. That's it, we put the tubes back on the radiator. We start and drive the box in all modes. Warm up to 45-60 degrees. not lower and not higher. And we check it using the measuring hole. About 250 grams poured and leaked out. According to my calculations, about 200-300 grams more went into the box than poured out (this is normal), as a ragged stream began to swirl. Everything was changed. The time is less than three hours. The oil in the box is 95% new, it will never be 100%)))

There are few photos, there was no time, without assistants. :-)

Sorry for any mistakes))) All the best!)

Important! When changing from one type of lubricant to another, or if the oil is heavily contaminated, it is advisable to make a complete replacement, since a partial update simply will not help.

When to change

Owners of Toyota LCP J120 from the first two categories begin to change the oil after 100,000 km. With moderate loads on the gearbox over the entire period of operation, the transmission will still be in quite good condition after this mileage. But if the car was purchased for a “year”, the oil must be changed earlier.

Owners from the third category change the oil partially and completely at intervals of 40-60,000 kilometers, depending on operating conditions. And a certain part of the happy owners and fans of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado J120 know that gearboxes have a fairly large service life - 300,000 km, and today this is quite an impressive figure.

But it is still worth reporting the recommendation given by one of the managers of the company of the gearbox manufacturer Aisin: to change the oil in an automatic transmission every second maintenance or after 20,000 km. Of course, this figure will seem overkill for some, because the boxes are reliable and do not cause problems when replacing 40,000 km, even after 150,000 km, but knowledge about this will not be superfluous, and whether to use it in practice or not is everyone’s choice individual.

Gearboxes installed on Toyota Prado J120:

  • A340E (AW30-40LE / -70LE) - a very simple and balanced 4-speed automatic transmission with electronic control, installed on Prado 2.7 TRJ120/TRJ125W with 2TR-FE engine, 3.4 V6 VZJ120 with 5VZ-FE engine, 4.0 GRJ120 with 1GR-FE , 3.0 KDJ120 with 1KD-FTV and 3.0 LJ120 with 5L-E;
  • A650E - 5-speed automatic transmission installed on the Toyota Prado 3.4 5VZ is unpretentious in terms of oil quality, but requires timely replacement;
  • A750E/A750F is the most reliable automatic transmission of the Toyota Prado 120. The automatic transmission was installed on the petrol modification 4.0 GRJ120 with 1GR and diesel 3.0 KDJ120 with 1KD and 3.0 LJ120 with 5L-E;
  • The R150F is the only 5-speed manual transmission paired with the 2.7 TRJ120/TRJ125W 2TR and 3.4-liter V6 5VZ;
