Changing the oil in a Toyota Camry automatic transmission - photo and video instructions Leave a comment

Improper care of the gearbox, as well as the use of old gear oil, often causes problems in the valve body, which often requires repairing the entire system.

Oil changes in Toyota Camry automatic transmissions are carried out by professional technicians, official dealers and car owners themselves.

What kind of oil to pour

It is recommended to use automatic transmission oil in Camry 50 from Toyota: branded WS fluid for automatic transmissions - Toyota Genuine ATF WS (number 08886-02305, 4-liter canister) or Idemitsu ATF Type-TLS-LV (number 10114042B). Idemitsu transmission oil is specially designed for use in automatic transmissions of passenger cars and SUVs of the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands, where the use of a fluid with Toyota ATF WS approval is required (automatic transmission manufacturer specification - JWS 3324). The oil manufacturer does not recommend the use of this lubricant in automatic transmissions, where any other original manufacturer specifications are recommended.

Toyota ATF WS and Idemitsu ATF Type-TLS-LV are the best oils for the Toyota Camry V50 automatic transmission.

For those who, for personal reasons, do not want to pour Toyota oil as an alternative, we recommend paying attention to analogues. These oils have proven themselves well and have received quite a lot of positive reviews and recommendations - TOTACHI ATF WS, Anisin ATF Wide Range AFW and AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic ATF.

When choosing an oil, the main thing is not to buy a fake, so initially think carefully about where it is best and most reliable in your region to purchase original oil and filter from one manufacturer or another.

Automatic transmission oil for Toyota Camry A140E/A540E (4 gears)

Earlier Toyota Camry models were equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission of the A140E and A540E modifications, produced by the Japanese company Aisin Warner from 1985 to 2003. At the same time, the Japanese automaker strongly recommends filling this automatic transmission exclusively with oils that have an ATF Type T-IV approval. This can be either the original Toyota ATF Type T-IV transmission fluid or its analogues. For example, GToil GT ATF Type IV or Lukoil Atf Synth Asia.

Automatic Toyota Camry car - how much oil to fill

Fourth generation XV20, 1996-2002

In addition to the usual sedan, a convertible was also available in the 4th generation Camry family (since 2000). In this generation, the car remained faithful to the body proportions of its predecessor. At the same time, the car received a new design for the rear and front parts, which stood out with solid headlights and a chrome radiator grille. The car had several modifications depending on the market - Camry (basic sedan), Camry Solara (coupe), Avalon (luxury sedan with a long wheelbase), Windom and Gracia (these are luxury versions of the Avalon). As before, the Camry's sister model was the co-platform Toyota Vista.

The fourth generation was equipped with 1.8 and 2.0 liter petrol engines, as well as a 2.2 liter diesel engine. In addition to the front-wheel drive version, 4WD was also offered for trim levels with 2.0 and 2.2 liter engines, and only on the Japanese market. The export model Camry XV20 was sold in small quantities in Russia, and in Japan it was the Daihatsu Altis. The export modification of the 1996 model was equipped with 2.2 and 3.0 liter gasoline engines (133-192 hp), borrowed from the previous model. Comfort, equipment and safety of the Camry have reached a higher level and began to meet higher standards in business class.

Automatic transmission oil: volume – up to 8.2 liters with a complete change; up to 4 liters with partial replacement

Fifth generation XV30, 2001-2006

When developing the fifth generation Camry, the developers took the path of unification with new Toyota models. After all, it was on the basis of the Camry XV30 that the Sienna minivan, as well as the Lexus RX300, Toyota Harrier and Toyota Highlander crossovers, were created. They used the platform and engine range from Camry. The sedan of the same name was officially offered in Russia with 2.4 and 3.0 liter gasoline engines, which were coupled with a manual or automatic transmission. In 2004, a modification with a 5-speed automatic transmission appeared. In addition, restyling affected the interior and exterior design, equipment and safety elements. Moreover, after restyling, new engines of 2.4, 3.0 and 3.3 liters became available, but they were offered only for the North American version of the Toyota Camry.

Toyota Camry automatic transmission oil U140F/U241E (4 gears)

The hydromechanical 4-speed automatic transmission of the U140F and U241E modifications, installed on Toyota Camry from 2000 to 2014, is also the brainchild of the eminent company Aisin Warner. At the same time, as the operating instructions for these vehicles state, when servicing this automatic transmission, it is also necessary to purchase gear oil with an ATF Type T-IV approval. This may be the original Toyota ATF Type T-IV mentioned above, or its substitutes (Mobil 3309, SHELL SPIRAX S5 ATF X). Also, there is still debate among motorists about whether it is better to fill with original automatic transmission oil or Shell Camry oil. Of course, the original oil is a higher priority, since it is intended specifically for machines of these specifications. But analogues, as a rule, have a significant number of specifications, being a kind of universal transmission fluid.

Oil selection

When choosing an oil to replace, it is necessary to take into account the manufacturer’s list of requirements, since its operating conditions require a compromise between polar requirements: reducing friction in pairs of gears and at the same time maintaining sufficient adhesion for clutches and brake bands.

For a Toyota Camry 2.4 V 40, changing the oil yourself will require purchasing from 4 to 10 liters of Toyota ATF WS fluid, catalog number:

  • liter packaging - 08886-80807,
  • four-liter - 08886-02305.

How many liters are required depends on the chosen replacement method: with a partial replacement, only the oil is drained from the box itself by removing the pan; with a full one, you will need to drain the oil from the torque converter while the engine is running, spilling fresh oil into the system. Considering the cost of a liter of oil is about 900 rubles, many owners prefer a partial oil change in the transmission.

You will also need an oil filter (catalog number 35330-08010), a pan gasket (35168-21020), and a filter gasket (90301-32010). Considering that the original filter costs more than 2.5 thousand rubles, its analogues are popular: Nakamoto F040008, Zekkert OF-4445G, JS Asakashi JT422K.

Transmission fluid for automatic Toyota Camry U151E/U250E (5 gears)

Since 2005, the Toyota Camry began to be equipped with a 5-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission of modifications U151E and U250E. Like previous automatic transmissions, these machines belong to Aisin Warner. At the same time, in Camry models produced before 2005, Toyota recommends filling in transmission fluid with the ATF Type T-IV approval described above. And after 2005 - with the Type WS specification. Accordingly, we can recommend purchasing Toyota ATF Type T-IV, Toyota Type WS, Rosneft Kinetic ATF Type T-IV, Wolf Ecotech Multivehicle ATF FE.

Checking the level

In the Toyota Camry V50, the automatic transmission lubrication level is checked by draining excess oil through an overflow flask located in the pan. Therefore, first add fresh ATF without starting the engine, and then adjust the level. We will fill the machine through the filler hole in the pan:

  1. Raise your Toyota Camry on a lift.
  2. Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the 2 bolts of the front left fender apron seal.

  3. If the car is hot, wait until the automatic transmission cools down to ⁓20℃.
  4. Unscrew the filler plug with a 24mm socket.

  5. Unscrew the overflow flask bolt with a 6 mm hexagon. If grease leaks, wait until it starts dripping. In this case, additional filling is not needed. Proceed to the warm-up phase.

  6. The flask must be tightened to a torque of 1.7 Nm, otherwise the level indicator will be incorrect. To check the tightness, insert a hexagon into the hole.
  7. Pour fluid using a syringe or other device into the automatic transmission filler hole until it begins to flow out of the flask. Screw both plugs with the old gaskets without tightening.

Now you need to warm up the oil, because as the temperature increases, it expands . To monitor the temperature, use a scanner or SST tool (09843-18040):

  1. Connect the scanner to the DLC3 diagnostic connector to monitor the oil temperature. It should not be higher than +40℃. Or connect pins 13 TC and 4 CG using SST to indicate codes.

  2. Start the engine to bleed the automatic transmission fluid.
  3. Start temperature detection mode. Switch the selector from position “P” to “D” and back with a delay of 6 s. Watch the gear indicator and move the lever between “D” and “N”. When the Toyota Camry enters the temperature detection mode, the “D” gear engaged indicator will light up for 2 seconds when the ATF heats up to the desired value.

  4. Turn off the scanner and disconnect the contacts. The temperature detection mode is maintained until the ignition is turned off.

Set the oil level to normal:

  1. Raise the Toyota Camry.
  2. Remove the stopper of the overflow flask. Be careful, the liquid is hot!
  3. Wait until the excess drains out and the ATF begins to drip.
  4. If liquid does not flow out of the overflow flask, add lubricants until it flows out of the overflow flask.

After setting the level, tighten the control flask plug with a new gasket and a force of 40 Nm. The tightening torque of the filler hole is 49 Nm. Lower the Toyota Camry. Turn off the engine. Put the boot back in place.

Automatic transmission oil Toyota Camry U660E/U760E (6 gears)

The seventh, eighth and ninth generations of Toyota Camry under the indexes XV40, XV50, XV55 and XV70 received a 6-speed automatic transmission of the U660E/U760E modifications. These machines, developed by Aisin, began to be actively installed on many Toyota models after 2006. At the same time, as a transmission fluid, they use oil with Type WS approval (Toyota Type WS, Aisin ATF AFW+, Petro-Canada DuraDrive MV Synthetic ATF and others).

Selection of ATF oil for Toyota Camry V70 automatic transmission

In fact, this post is a continuation of my two earlier publications about the aisin U760E 6-speed automatic transmission for the Toyota Camry V70. I will make links to them as the story progresses.

Over the past few months, I've been reading posts from teammates who did a partial gearbox oil change. From my point of view, right is right and here's why.

Over time, ATF transmission fluid loses its chemical properties due to intensive daily use of the vehicle. This is facilitated by the active influence on the liquid of high specific pressure, high and low temperatures, wear products from friction of friction pairs, etc. It is quite natural that under such conditions the quality of ATF will change.

If ten years ago all experienced car owners knew that the oil in the gearbox would need to be changed after 60-80 thousand kilometers, now some users, having looked at the car’s maintenance manual, firmly believe that the ATF does not change at all throughout the entire period of operation of the car. Like just checking its level in the automatic transmission.

By the way, I will immediately answer the questions of some users. When driving, the aisin U760E GMKP may slightly kick from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd gears due to the fact that the oil level in the box has decreased or it has not been added to the mark at the factory. This is an option. So check it out.

Let's continue. All Aisin automatic transmissions for the Camry V70 are produced under the same conditions and each of them has a service life of approximately 300 thousand kilometers. But there is one BUT. GMC manufacturers claim that in order to achieve such mileage, it is necessary to change the ATF fluid in the gearbox every 20 thousand kilometers.

I would like to emphasize once again that the automatic transmissions 6AR2.0, 2AR2.5 and 2GR3.5 are not a product of Toyota, but of the Aisin Warner concern, which supplies gearboxes not only to the Japanese, but also to the Germans, Koreans and even Americans. Therefore, listening to the nonsense of dealers that ATF does not change in aisin GMKP throughout the entire period of operation is not to respect yourself.

And one more digression. There are also cases when expensive cars sit in dealer showrooms or warehouses for two years. During this time, the ATF in gearboxes becomes unsuitable for effective use, so the oil must be changed.

Now you can move on to the list of ATF fluids. I chose those that can be safely used for partial or complete replacement in the above Toyota Camry V70 gearboxes. I bring reports on testing oils and their characteristics from the Oil Club, where I periodically visit, plus passports of imported ATFs that are not tested in the club.

So I’ll start with ATF WS, which has already been used by several colleagues on the forum.

So I’ll start with ATF WS, which two of our colleagues have already used. This is the main oil that Toyota Camry dealers recommend, apparently because they don’t know anything else. It is still sold in tin cans, since they contain fewer fakes and liter bottles. There are probably 200 liter barrels too.

Toyota WS test report. A good ATF, the additive package is similar to many other ATFs that the guys tested earlier in the club. Not bad low temperature properties. There are esters to reduce friction and wear, but all the features are below in the text.

1. Viscosity at 40*C = 23.67 - this transmission is really very economical, in conditions when the box has not yet warmed up - and it takes a long time to warm up. Oil of lower viscosity has less resistance to gearbox parts and saves fuel.

2. Viscosity at 100*C = 5.36 - we also see lower viscosity at operating temperature - when the box is already warmed up.

3. Pour point -44*C. This is not a record, of course, but quite normal for Russian winters.

4. Brookfield dynamic viscosity at -40C = 9070 is an excellent result, this parameter is much more important than the pour point.

5. Corrosion on copper at 150*C = rating 2a - normal, 1b - considered excellent, 2a is close...

6. Sulfur content = 0.060 - low sulfur content. That is, in principle, nothing will oxidize.

7. The additive package is standard - a little phosphorus, which is part of the anti-wear additive. A little calcium - which acts as a detergent neutralizing additive. A little boron is an Extreme Pressure anti-wear additive or dispersant.

8. And most importantly, the oil contains esters, which reduce wear and friction coefficient.

Let's move on to the next ATF. This is Amsoil Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. Very cool synthetic low viscosity ATF. The liquid is declared as Toyota WS and is quite compatible with it. Sold in three containers: 1 liter, 4 liters and 10 liters.

Test report for this ATF. Very good for use in cold regions of Russia, pour point 60 degrees Celsius. Below are its main characteristics and features.

1. Viscosity at 100C = 6.22 - it’s not for nothing that the oil is called fuel efficient...

2. Standard additive package, phosphorus anti-wear additive, calcium detergent neutralizing additive. Boron as an extreme pressure anti-wear additive.

3. Corrosion on a copper plate at 100C - the highest rating is 1a - that is, the oil is safe for copper or copper-containing parts of the box, as well as radiators and heat exchangers.

4. Acid number = 1.60 - for ATF this is even high acid, but not a crime. Most likely esters or additives gave this acidic value.

6. Pour point = below -60C - With this oil you can definitely not be afraid of the most severe frosts.

7. Judging by the IR spectrum and the high peak at wavelength 722, the oil is completely synthetic - PAO synthetic + some esters.

The next excellent transmission fluid for the Camry V70 is Idemitsu ATF Type TLS-LV. This oil is listed as Toyota ATF, JWS 3324, Toyota, Lexus and Scion. Freezing point 57 degrees Celsius.

Judging by the test report, a good ATF like Toyota WS. Viscosity corresponds to the original. The additive package is identical. Good anti-corrosion properties. Good low temperature properties. Contains esters to reduce friction and wear. Below are its main characteristics and features.

1. Viscosity at 40*C = 23.44 is low, that is, this transmission will save fuel during cold starting and starting “immediately”. Moreover, in cold weather it will not keep the machine with a thick viscosity - this is a plus.

2. Viscosity at 100*C = 5.37 - low operating viscosity, the oil actually acts as an analogue of Toyota WS, allowing you to save fuel at operating temperatures of the box.

3. Acid number = 1.55 - not high, although analogues are slightly lower. In general, the oil will increase its acidity for a long time (and therefore work out).

4. The pour point is -57*C - a decent pour point, but for low-viscosity transmissions it is always like this, there is nothing surprising here.

5. Corrosion on the copper plate - the highest rating is 1a - that is, the oil is not aggressive to copper and copper alloys in automatic transmissions.

6. Sulfur content = 0.060 - just like the original Toyota WS 0.060, it’s the same. It indicates that the same additive package is used. And this, by the way, will be seen below. Also, this sulfur content indicates that mineral water of group 1 with a high sulfur content is not here.

7. Anti-wear additives based on phosphorus. Boron is most likely also an Extreme Pressure anti-wear additive. Calcium as a detergent neutralizing additive. The content of the elements is exactly the same as the Toyota Type WS. That is, the additive package is the same as the original.

8. According to the parameter Oxidation = 38.5 - we see that esters are used in the liquid

And the passport of this ATF fluid itself confirms that it corresponds to Toyota WS. Highlighted with a blue square. Well, let’s believe our Japanese comrades who recommend this gearbox oil to us.

The next universal low-viscosity ATF is Redline D6 ATF. It is declared as Toyota-Lexus WS, AW-1-JWS 3324, NWS09638, and in general it is suitable for many cars with an automatic transmission. Below, after the test report, are its characteristics and features.

Good universal fluid for automatic transmissions. The manufacturer made it using synthetic PAO base oils and added esters. It's clear that they didn't skimp on ingredients. The oil allows you to save fuel by lower viscosity resistance in a cold, not warmed-up transmission, and at the same time, at operating temperature, it is not low-viscosity. The additive package is quite thick. Low temperature characteristics are normal. Corrosive activity is not high. The only thing is that the stated pour point of minus 60C turned out to be slightly higher than 55C.

1. Viscosity at 40*C = 29.86 - allows you to save fuel until the box is warmed up to operating temperature, that is, ATF is economical.

2. Viscosity at 100*C = 6.18 - this is a kind of golden mean between economy and wear protection.

3. Acid number = 1.45 - this is normal for ATF. It says that they used a high-quality ester base; if you are afraid that esters are hygroscopic, then this is not the case with this oil.

4. Pour point -51C - it was measured in the laboratory 2 times, everyone expected it a little lower. But in reality she is normal, much lower...

5. Corrosion on a copper plate at 100*C - gets the highest rating of 1a. That is, the oil is not aggressive to copper, bronze, brass (and indirectly to all other) metals.

6. Flash point = 232*C - for low viscosity oil, this is a very good flash point - indicates the synthetic nature of this ATF. It’s not for nothing that we will see below that she is PAO + Esther. Not to be confused with motor oils, they have a higher viscosity and are more likely to show a good flash than low-viscosity ATF.

7. Sulfur content = 0.222 - The sulfur content for ATF is higher than normal, very similar to the fact that sulfur-based anti-wear additives were used.

8. Additive package: Phosphorus - anti-wear additive (most likely complete with sulfur). Boron anti-wear additive. Calcium is a detergent, detergent additive.

9. Oxidation parameter 47 - indicates that the oil contains esters in decent concentrations like the original Toyota WS (46).

The next excellent low-viscosity fluid for Toyota Camry V70 United ATF MV-66 transmissions. Announced as Lexus and Toyota WS, and for many other manufacturers, the list is very extensive on the Oil Club.

Judging by the tests, ATF is an excellent universal fluid of a modern type, which really has little resistance to rolling and automatic transmission parts. Fuel efficient. Quick heating of the fluid to operating temperature is practically the same as what the manufacturer stated in the technical specifications. United ATF MV-66 techdoc.pdf. The characteristics are the same, a little plus or minus. There are also esters present here, which impart anti-wear and anti-friction properties. Below are the features of this liquid.

1. Viscosity at 40*C = 26.12 - the oil is really economical until the box is warmed up, and it happens very often in city conditions that it is not warmed up.

2. Viscosity at 100*C = 5.55 - which confirms that Low Viscosity oil is low-viscosity - to save fuel and reduce resistance to automatic transmission parts.

3, Pour point -46*C - a little even better than what the manufacturer promised in the documents (-45C).

4. Viscosity on a Brookfield viscometer at -40*C = 9663 is an excellent indicator.

5. Corrosion on copper plate = rating 1b - again excellent, copper-containing alloys and copper parts will feel great.

6. Tribological tests for low-viscosity ATF are good, the wear diameter on a 4-ball friction machine is especially good: Di = 0.43

7. Sulfur content = 0.106 - not high, base oils are free of sulfur, here the anti-wear additive gives the most sulfur.

8. Anti-wear additive based on sulfur-phosphorus. Calcium-based detergent-neutralizing additives. Boron as an EP anti-wear additive.

9. The content of oxidation products hints that they also added esters there.

Actually, the passport itself of this low-viscosity ATF fluid. The blue square highlighted the fact that it replaces Toyota WS, so this oil can be used in Toyota aisin gearboxes.

Another option for an excellent low-viscosity ATF fluid is Kendall VersaTrans LV ATF, a fully synthetic low-viscosity LV transmission fluid approved for use in automatic transmissions in passenger cars.

VersaTrans LV ATF is recommended for use in many new American and Japanese cars, where the manufacturer positions it as Toyota WS, highlighted in blue square. It has not been tested by oil club specialists, but there are good recommendations for this ATF in the USA

This transmission fluid is highly stable and has excellent oxidation resistance, ensuring a long service life.

Ensures good vehicle operation without vibrations and shocks in the gearbox, has excellent low-temperature properties for smooth gear shifting in cold weather.

Helps reduce friction, reduces foaming, thereby increasing transmission efficiency and economical fuel consumption.

Another good ATF fluid for Toyota Camry V70 automatic transmissions is the French Motul ATF6 oil. This is what she looks like. There are no results of its tests at the Oil Club, but it can be quite used when replacing fluid in a gearbox.

The passport of this transmission fluid reflects its positive aspects and scope of application, including compliance with Toyota WS used in the Toyota Camry V70 automatic transmission. Highlighted in blue.

Another synthetic transmission fluid that can be used is Petro-Canada DuraDrive MV Synthetic ATF. The oil is declared as Aisin Warner, Toyota WS and for a large number of other manufacturers.

Judging by the test report, it’s a good transmission for the price and quality. The only thing is, of course, it is not for the harsh regions of Siberia, like Yakutia. Also, compatibility with Toyota Type WS is indirect here; this oil can be used as stated by the manufacturer, but with the caveat that you will not get the same savings due to the higher viscosity. Another plus is that there are esters, that is, they didn’t skimp on oil.

The Petro-Canada DuraDrive MV Synthetic ATF data sheet suggests that this transmission fluid can be used just like Toyoya WS. Highlighted in blue.

And the last good synthetic fluid for Toyota Camry V70 gearboxes is Aisin ATF AFW plus.

The oil is declared as: TOYOTA: Type T/Type T-II/Type T-II/Type T-IV/WS; Dexron II, Dexron II-E, Dexron III; NISSAN: Matic Fluid D/Matic Fluid J/Matic Fluid S; HONDA: ATF DW-1/ATF-Z1 Ultra; MITSUBISHI: ATF SP-2/SP-2 M/ATF SP-3/ATFII/ATF-SK/ATF-J2; MAZDA: ATF-M3/ ATF JWS3317/ATF M-5/ATF F-1/Besco ATF3; Ford: Mercon; Mercon V; Subaru ATF.

Test report of Aisin ATF AFW plus. Not a bad transmission, but like Petro-Canada DuraDrive MV Synthetic ATF, not for areas with harsh winters. For the European and southern parts of the Russian Federation it will be quite suitable. Below are the features of this ATF fluid.

1. Viscosity at 40*C = 35.79 and at 100*C = 7.3 - more similar to Toyota Type T-IV oil, it has the same viscosity characteristics. Viscosity cannot be called low like Toyota WS.

2. The viscosity index is high, indirectly telling us that hydrocracking base oils are used.

3. Acid number = 1.43 - low, typical for transmissions.

4. The pour point is -44*C - also normal, for the winter climate of the European part of Russia, it is also suitable for the cold regions of Siberia, but something lower in temperature is better.

5. Corrosion on a copper plate at 120*C = 1b - this is a good rating for a temperature of 120*C, the oil is safe for brass, bronze and copper automatic transmission parts, although it also characterizes the relationship with other metals.

6. Brookfield viscosity at -40*C = 20295 - for the coolest low-temperature transmissions (usually they have a lower operating viscosity) this parameter is 10,000-12,000. Here is the middle.

7. The additive package is identical to Toyota Type T-IV oil. Phosphorus as anti-wear additives. Calcium as a detergent. Boron is used either as a dispersant or as an anti-wear additive.

8. The Oxidation parameter indicates that esters have been added to the oil - they also reduce wear.

How to check the oil level in a Toyota Camry automatic transmission

Checking the oil level in the automatic transmission helps not only to prevent oil starvation of the machine, but also to understand when it is necessary to change the Toyota Camry automatic transmission oil. It is performed either using a control probe (if there is one), or using a control plug (if there is no probe):

  • The oil in the automatic transmission is heated to 70 degrees.
  • park the car on a level surface
  • move the selector to N
  • unscrew the control plug
  • pay attention to the intensity of transmission fluid leaking from under it

Box operating modes

The automatic transmission model and control method (hydraulics, electronics) determine the set of its operating modes. Regardless of the type of transmission on the Camry, there are several main modes:

  • P – parking mode. It should be chosen when parking for a long time. The gearbox is turned off, the shaft is blocked, and the drive wheels do not rotate.

Important: you cannot switch to this mode until it stops completely. Also, when stopping on uphill/downhill slopes, you should first tighten the handbrake, and only then put the box into parking mode.

  • R – reverse gear. You can transfer to it from “parking” and “neutral” only after stopping the car.
  • N – neutral mode. The box does not transmit torque to the wheels, but the shaft is not blocked and the drive axles can rotate. In this mode, the car can be towed over a short (important!) distance.
  • 2 – movement is blocked in gears above 2. This gearbox mode is suitable for bad roads, frequent ascents and descents, since it uses engine braking.
  • L – low gear. It is recommended to use it on steep slopes and off-road; in it, Toyota moves only in 1 transmission stage.
  • D – main mode of the box, forward movement.

Changing the oil in an automatic transmission Toyota Camry

When you have decided what kind of oil you will fill in the Camry automatic transmission, it is worth thinking about this technical operation itself. After all, changing the oil in a Toyota Camry automatic transmission can be either complete or partial. Accordingly, in a Toyota Camry, a complete automatic transmission oil change is performed using a vacuum unit. While you can partially replace the transmission fluid yourself by following these steps:

  • place the machine on a viewing hole or lift
  • remove the engine crankcase protection
  • unscrew the automatic transmission drain plug
  • drain the waste
  • remove the automatic transmission pan
  • replace consumables
  • fill with fresh oil according to the level

What are the dangers of not changing the oil on time?

Over time, transmission fluid inevitably loses its quality. It contains dirt, shavings, metal chips and water, which negatively affects the properties of the oil. All this leads to overheating of the fluid and rapid wear of gearbox components.

In addition, over time, the effectiveness of the additives included in the oil decreases, which also leads to a deterioration in its quality. A “vicious circle” arises: wear of components leads to even greater contamination of the ATF, its overheating, and, accordingly, further negative impact on the performance of gaskets and seals. The oil level may drop over time, which also increases the stress on parts.
