  2. In 2011, assembly of the XV50 generation with a new sedan body began. The luggage compartment capacity on the basic versions (with 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines) was reduced to 506 liters. When installing an electric drive for the rear seat (offered only with the 3.5 liter engine), the capacity of the cargo compartment was reduced to 483 liters. After the modernization, the model code changed to XV55, but the body remained unchanged.
  3. The XV70 generation presented in 2021 with changed dimensions and sedan body shape has a luggage compartment with a capacity of 493 liters. On expensive versions with a 3.5 liter engine, the manufacturer uses the rear row of seats with electric adjustment drives, which reduces the volume of the luggage compartment to 469 liters.

On the Japanese modification

The following generations of cars were sold in Japan:

  1. The V10, produced until 1986, was equipped with a sedan body. The stated volume of the luggage compartment was 385 liters. There was no mechanism for folding the backrest: the owner could transport long objects only after removing the seat.
  2. The V20 series featured a modernized body. The trunk capacity was about 400 liters, but there was a mechanism for folding the back of the sofa in a 60:40 ratio. The capacity of the luggage compartment did not depend on the type of drive; the gearbox and driveshaft required the use of a modified fuel tank with an unchanged body base.
  3. On the Japanese market in the early and mid-90s. modifications of the Camry XV10 and XV20 were produced with the original sedan body, having a luggage compartment with a capacity of 517 and 520 liters, respectively (the back of the rear sofa folded out).
  4. Since 2001, production of the XV30 generation began, which did not have a gradation by body type depending on the sales market. The capacity of the cargo compartment is 587 liters; to increase the useful volume, you need to fold the back of the sofa for passengers.
  5. Versions XV40 and XV50, built on a global platform, did not differ from their Russian counterparts. Some cars came from the factory with a compact spare wheel, which made it possible to increase the trunk volume by 25-30 liters.
  6. Since 2021, XV70 modification machines have been offered on the Japanese market. Instead of a full-fledged spare wheel, a stowage unit is used, which allows you to lower the floor of the luggage compartment and increase the useful capacity to 524 liters. The installation of electric drives for adjusting the position of the rear row of seats is provided (in this case the parameter is reduced to 480 l).

Eastern cars

On cars for Eastern countries, trunk volume depends on the generation and body type. Toyota began exporting cars starting with the XV30 generation. The bodies do not differ from their European or Japanese counterparts, which determines the identical volume of luggage compartments. A modification of the Toyota Camry Conquest Wagon with a station wagon body was supplied in small quantities: the capacity of the luggage compartment with the seats folded exceeds 1200 liters, and with the backrest normally installed, the parameter does not exceed 500 liters.

Preparing the car for tuning

When preparing the machine for modification, you should perform the following steps:

  1. It is not recommended to drive the car into a closed garage equipped with a lift or inspection hole; it is not recommended to carry out repairs on the street.
  2. Unscrew the screws securing the mudguard under the bumper.
  3. Remove the mounting clips located in the front wheel arches.
  4. Bend the fender liner away from the plastic shell, and then unscrew the bolts holding the corners of the decorative element to the body.
  5. Remove the plastic clips and unscrew the bolts located under the hood of the car.
  6. Move the side edges of the bumper to the sides, moving the latches out of the guide grooves in the brackets.
  7. Gently pull the plastic shell towards you, unfastening the additional latches one by one.
  8. Lay the structure on the floor of the garage, and then disconnect the plugs of the electrical wiring routed to the fog lights and parking assistant sensors (this option is not available on all cars).
  9. If you plan to remove the headlights, you will need to unscrew the side bolts and 2 screws of the top mounting.

Basic elements of a car suspension

Any pendant consists of several basic elements:

Tires. This is the first stage in the system for smoothing out uneven road surfaces. Having a certain degree of elasticity, the tire is able to dampen a small amount of vibrations that occur during movement. If there are malfunctions in the tire suspension, the wheels can act as an indicator of a malfunction, since the service life of the tire in such a situation is quickly reduced and uneven wear occurs.

Basic elastic elements. The elastic elements of a car suspension include springs, leaf springs and torsion bars. The purpose of these elements is to provide an elastic connection between the body and the road surface. The entire load of the car falls on the springs, and due to their elasticity, the body is held at a certain height. During operation and heavy overloads, the metal of the elastic elements wears out, causing their rigidity to change. Such changes negatively affect the performance of the suspension as a whole. The angle of the wheels changes, the ground clearance decreases, and the load capacity decreases. Body sagging when unloaded is the main signal that the springs need to be replaced.

Additional elastic elements. Additional elastic elements include compression buffers; their use is necessary to dampen high-frequency vibrations, as well as vibrations generated during the contact of metal elements. Thanks to the presence of such elastic elements, the service life of other suspension components is significantly increased.

It is extremely important to monitor their good condition and promptly replace worn parts.

Guiding devices. The main task of the guide devices is to ensure the movement of the wheel in the established plane. Thanks to a system of levers, when moving on an uneven surface, the wheel moves in a vertical direction, while maintaining a perpendicular position relative to the road surface

Any violations in the guide elements will lead to rapid and uneven wear of the wheel tire, as well as other suspension elements.

Damping element. The element of the damping device is a shock absorber. The use of shock absorbers in the suspension system allows you to solve problems such as body vibration when driving on uneven roads, as well as smoothing out vibrations on other elements of the vehicle's suspension. Thanks to the damping function, constant contact of the wheel with the road is ensured, the car becomes more stable when driving.

Anti-roll bar. When turning at speed, the anti-roll bar prevents the vehicle from rolling. When performing a turning maneuver, the wheels on one side of the vehicle begin to lift off the road, which can cause the vehicle to roll over. At this moment, tension is created on the stabilizer, which tends to return the rising edge of the car to its place.

Fastening elements for individual parts. Fastening elements include ball joints, silent blocks and bolted joints that connect the remaining elements of the vehicle's suspension.

A little theory

One of the main characteristics of a car's suspension is its ground clearance, or the distance from the road surface to the lowest point of the car. The main factor influencing its size is the height of the suspension. It can be easily changed both up and down. By increasing it, you can raise the car above the ground, by decreasing it, you can lower it, but at the same time the Camry’s handling will increase several times, which will become especially noticeable when cornering at high speed. And you also need to take into account that if you raise the Toyota Camry’s ground clearance by only 5 cm, the car’s handling at high speeds will significantly decrease.


The amount of ground clearance also depends on the specific Camry model.

There are several ways to raise a Camry to 30, 40 or 50:

  1. Install extended springs. But you should immediately be prepared to replace the shock absorbers, since their working stroke will move to the upper part. In addition, if the car gets into deep holes, the standard shock absorbers will begin to “pop”, since their working stroke will be shorter than the spring stroke.
  2. Install springs with increased stiffness - they will not bend under the weight of the car. This method can increase the car's ground clearance by up to 5 cm. But this will negatively affect the comfort in the car - small road irregularities will no longer be handled so effectively by the suspension, which will make a long trip by car not so pleasant.
  3. Install the screw suspension kit. A set of 4 “charged” struts (springs + shock absorbers) will cost Camry owners about 40–60 thousand rubles. The peculiarity of the suspension is the possibility of its adjustment: by rotating the rack with a special key, you can raise and lower the car. The only drawback of this method is the inability to automatically raise and lower the body.
  4. Install a set of air springs. In a similar way, you can raise a Camry in 40 and 50 body styles - there are many offers on the market for installing air suspension on this model range.
  5. Install special spacers. Typically, they are made of rigid polyurethane and are mounted between the strut support and the body. The thickness of such a spacer determines how much the car can be raised. This method is accessible and low cost - the average price of a set of spacers for 2 racks for a Camry is set at 800–1000 rubles. But it should be taken into account that in order to attach the strut supports to the body, you will also have to purchase extended studs.

But the easiest way to raise the car body is to install tires with a higher profile. Or you can completely replace the wheels by installing wheels and tires of increased diameter. This will allow you to increase the ground clearance by 1–3 cm, which is often more than enough for confident driving in the city. For most car owners, this is the easiest way to raise the car, since installing Barnaul springs on it makes the suspension too stiff.

Low ground clearance

The changed body kit, namely the front bumper, led to a decrease in ground clearance. When measured at the very bottom edge of the bumper, the result is 200 millimeters, which is a centimeter lower than the previous generation Camry. According to the body, the ground clearance of the Toyota Camry at the lowest point is 155 millimeters.

What does this mean in practice? The vehicle is intended to be driven only on good asphalt roads. When driving on unpaved surfaces, due to the long wheelbase, the Camry will catch bumps with its bottom due to the increased wheelbase.

At the same time, if you compare the ground clearance of the Toyota Camry with models produced for the American or European market, you will notice that these figures are even lower, usually by 1-2 centimeters. In this case, the manufacturer uses another trick, measuring this distance on an empty car. In reality, a sedan with a driver and standard cargo in the trunk will drop even lower, especially if you travel with passengers in the cabin. The springs will invariably sag, lowering the car to the ground. And this will significantly complicate the operation of the car. Indeed, in urban conditions, when parking at the curb, every centimeter is important.

Installation of aerodynamic body kits

Tuning a Toyota Camry is a rather complex process, and its implementation can only be entrusted to professionals in specialized services. But in our country there are many villages and small towns where such services are not provided, so in such a case these tips will come in handy:

  1. Most often, original products from Japan, Germany, Korea or other countries fit exactly in shape and fasteners, but still, before painting, check that the fasteners and sizes of all parts of the kit match. Sometimes you have to trim to get a perfect match.
  2. During long-term storage and improper transportation of tuning kits for Camry, the geometry of individual parts changes, and during installation, gaps appear or, conversely, part of the kit does not fit into its place. For precise installation, evenly heat the maximum contact area to a temperature of 60°C - the fiberglass will become elastic and take the desired shape. For direct installation in such cases, use a hairdryer to heat the area.
  3. If you find damage in the form of bubbles or gouges on the outside of the kit part for Toyota Camry, you need to remove these irregularities using ordinary automotive putty.

: Camry 2011, still running, I’ve been using it for seven years. Overall, the car is good, balanced, although the seating position is a little high compared to older Japanese sedans. When I switched to it from a Corolla, I felt like I was using an SUV. Especially when the seat is in the up position. But the ground clearance turned out to be normal, if you drive around the city, I don’t catch anything even in winter. The chassis, however, is tough on potholes, but it’s comfortable to drive on a dirt road even at 100 km/h. By the way, 100 is just the most normal speed for the 40th Camry. The only noticeable drawback is poor visibility from the interior.

After all, even between generations of Toyota there are differences in design and technical solutions, so it is better to clarify how to properly remove the rear seat of a Camry 40.

For the car in the fortieth body, they used a different design of the lower frame on the back, and they also have a different cable arrangement. The fastening parts are also screwed much deeper, which complicates their dismantling.

You will first need to empty the luggage compartment to remove the floor covering. If there are armrests and a mechanism that regulates the angle of the backrest, they must also be removed first. To do this, simply unscrew the fixing bolts. All seat belt attachments are removed in the same way. When performing additional sound insulation, the plastic linings covering the opening into the luggage compartment are also removed.

You should know that the backs and the sofas themselves are removed separately. Most often, they begin to pull out the second row from the bottom, and then take it to the top if there are no design or fastening features.

Removing the seats

You can remove the sofa on the Toyota Camry v50 using a slotted screwdriver and a ratchet wrench size 12. Armed with the necessary tools, first:

  • You should pull the edges of the pillow to release the fastening loops;
  • Disconnect 2 connectors with a slotted screwdriver;
  • Now the seats can be pulled out of the cabin.

On the Camry XV40, you can do without a screwdriver, just lift the sofa and pull to pull the staples out of the grooves.

If there are covers on the seats, you can leave them, but for convenience and to keep them clean, it is better to remove them.

Installing the sofa into the interior should be done in the reverse order. Only on the fortieth Camry you will have to make a little effort to get the staples into the grooves.

Removing the backrests

The procedure for dismantling the backrests takes a little longer. Here you will have to work more with a key of 12. So, we remove the backrests of the seats on the Camry 50, for which you need:

  1. Raise the headrest so that the caps for the fastening cells are visible.
  2. Using a slotted screwdriver, remove the plugs.
  3. Use a wrench to unscrew the mounting bolts.
  4. Pull the belt out of the guide.
  5. Unscrew the fastening bolts on both sides at the bottom.
  6. Unscrew the fasteners near the bracket.
  7. Remove the curtain attached to the back from the rear panel.
  8. Pull out the back.

Like the sofa, it must be installed in reverse order.

When working with the rear panel, you need to be careful not to damage the nearby wiring to the rear signal lights, sensors and other mechanisms located there.

The procedure itself for removing the rear row on a Toyota Camry in the XV40 or XV50 body takes a couple of hours, even for an inexperienced motorist. After all, there’s nothing even to spoil or break, except a couple of clips. But such fasteners are often disposable. Therefore, there is no point in paying specialists at a service station for something that you can do yourself.

Electrics

Initially, the electrical wiring was laid with a safety margin. But due to the popularity of the model among car thieves, the Camry XV40 is often additionally equipped with one or even several alarm systems. And the extent of the Camry’s electrical problems directly depends on the degree of “handicraft” of the installers.

When inspecting, be sure to pay attention to how the additional wiring is laid under the hood and in the cabin, look under the front panel. If you find sloppy twists of wires and a bunch of electrical tape, it won’t hurt to undergo additional computer diagnostics of the car.

Among the “innate” electrical weaknesses are the generator and the air conditioning compressor. If the first one is restored for pennies, then replacing the compressor will cost several hundred dollars.
