The correct procedure for initializing a robot box on a Toyota Corolla

Owners of Toyota Corolla cars produced between 2006 and 2008 often encounter problems with the operation of a robotic gearbox.

The manufacturer admitted a flaw in the creation of the MMT, which entails the initialization of all parameters and subsequent premature repairs.

To successfully initialize the robot box on a Toyota Corolla, it is necessary to perform certain sequential actions; this is the only way to correctly configure the operation of the entire transmission.

How is initialization carried out?

If any parts are replaced, the operation of the robotic gearbox may be impaired. In order for MMT to work flawlessly again, it will need to be initialized. The instructions must be strictly followed, otherwise the procedure will have to be repeated.

First of all, it is necessary to understand what a robot box is, then initializing the MMT will become an easier process to understand and perform. The robot is structurally different from a conventional automatic transmission. It works more clearly, does not allow jerking, shifts without delay, and the driver does not need to exert any mechanical effort to change gear.

The MMT is equipped with an ECU control unit, a position sensor, as well as sensors for monitoring the movement of the machine. A conventional manual transmission has a robotic drive that independently selects a gear. The car has a clutch: you can set the robot to automatic, manual or semi-automatic mode.

This system is convenient to use on the Corolla:

  • fuel consumption will be the same as a manual transmission;
  • has high reliability;
  • switches independently, like an automatic machine.>

Functions performed by MMT Toyota Corolla

The robot is one of many “projects” of the leader of the Japanese automobile industry, which simplifies the entire process of driving a car. The system is designed so that the driver does not think about “mechanical” gearbox shifting. Thus, the robot controls the transmission much better than the well-known automatic machine.

Problems with the Toyota Corolla robot
The Japanese made the debut of their first car with a multi-modal transmission at the end of 2006. Sales of cars with a robot did not last long on the market, as Toyota admitted its shortcomings and mistakes in creating such an interesting and attractive gearbox. Therefore, the Japanese were forced to discontinue this type of gearbox and introduce insurance for purchased cars for a short period of time. Owners of the Toyota Corolla robot faced the following number of problems:

  • Failures in the control unit system, which led to frequent problems and unscheduled initialization procedures, sometimes every 10 thousand kilometers
  • If it does not function properly, the box can cause the clutch disc to overheat and cause premature wear. There have been cases where the clutch required replacement after 50-60 thousand kilometers.
  • Interruptions in shifting from one gear to another. Most often this happened in long traffic jams. MMT “thinks” for a long time; this reaction leads to the car moving slowly or causing jerking.
  • Problems associated with the ECU, which caused the above-mentioned failures and malfunctions in the system. We had to do a complete update of this control unit.

Today, Toyota “insurance” for robotic gearboxes still exists. Specialized car services are ready to completely replace all elements of the MMT system. You can use the warranty card, but no one knows how long the “free” service will last.

What problems arise?

The first Toyota Corolla with a robotic gearbox appeared in 2006. The transmission was imperfect and had a number of problems. The control unit often malfunctioned; initialization had to be done every 10 thousand km. If this was not done, the clutch disc began to overheat, which is why it had to be changed every 50 thousand km. In traffic jams, the car moved jerkily, and the ECU also malfunctioned.

Initializing the Toyota Corolla clutch and robot box means resetting all ECU settings. A 2007 Corolla or a car of a different year may require initialization if any part of the mechanism was replaced (for example, after replacing the clutch, sensors, electric drive), if the ECU stops working normally. Calibration is needed if the system produces unknown errors or malfunctions.

Setting up the transmission system

After initialization, you should configure the robot control system. To do this, follow these steps:

  • stop the car;
  • move the gear shift knob to position N;

  • turn off the ignition, then turn it on for 40 seconds;
  • turn off the ignition again for 15 seconds;
  • Turn on the ignition, start the engine and depress the brake pedal.

If everything is successful, the N lever position indicator will start flashing. After 10 seconds it should light up steadily, indicating that the setup is complete.

Important! The specified initialization and configuration methods are used in the absence of a portable calibration device. Setting up the robot box of a Toyota Corolla car using the device has a number of significant differences.

Is initialization always useful?

There are times when it is not necessary to initialize the Corolla robot ECU.

You should not carry out the procedure too often: regular initialization of the robot will lead to increased wear and tear on the system.

When the drive is not installed correctly, a reset is not required if gear shifts are delayed or uneven at low speeds. Clutch actuator adjustments won't help if you need to take off smoother or faster.

All actions related to the initialization of a checkpoint or unit must be carried out after inspection by professionals and their direct recommendations or obvious reasons for this. Before initializing the Toyota Corolla 150 robotic gearbox with your own hands, you need to consult with a specialist who is well acquainted with the operation and problems of manual transmission on this car model.

How is the procedure done?

It is advisable to entrust the training of the robot to specialists, but you can do it yourself. To do this, you will need to set the car to the handbrake, close the contacts in the DLC3 block using a needle, paper clip or other thin and long object. You will need to connect CG and TC numbers 13 and 4, then you need to turn on the ignition without starting the engine and press the brake 7-10 times. You will hear a duplicate sound alert: this means that the diagnosis has started. After this, the brake pedal must remain depressed. You will need to configure the ECU as follows: N – E – V – select “minus” – M – “minus” again – M – E – N.

Once the electronic unit is configured, you can begin to adapt the clutch operation. You will need the following combination: N – E – M – “+” – M – “-” – M – “+” – M – “-” – E – N. When setting up MMT, you need to follow the sequence: N – E – M – “ -" – M – “-” – M – “+” – M – “+” – E – N.

Release and press the brake again, this will allow you to adjust the selected element. If the robot adaptation was completed correctly, the system will notify you with sound signals: first you will hear 2, then 3, and then 4. After this, it is permissible to turn off the ignition and disconnect the vehicle and CG.

If during the debugging procedure the system notifies you with long signals or this happens after it is completed, it means that you did something wrong.

The solution to the problem is as follows: you need to remove the key from the ignition and pause for at least 20 seconds. After this, the system will reboot and you can try to configure the learning robot again.

Replacing the clutch of a Toyota robot

Our experience, gained through numerous repairs, indicates that the weakest point of a robotic gearbox is the clutch. If there is significant wear on the driven disk or basket, release bearing and its guide, replacement will be required, which includes:

  • computer diagnostics;
  • replacing the clutch kit;
  • prevention of the clutch release actuator;
  • initialization of the control unit;
  • necessary computer settings and adaptation;
  • cleaning the throttle valve (if necessary).

How to work with the ECU?

If the control unit is not functioning correctly, it is advisable not to try to correct the errors yourself. The intervention of a specialist is required; if configured incorrectly, the system may begin to shut down or cause other failures.

Configuring the ECU should occur only after debugging the operation of the manual transmission and all its control units has been completed.

Diagnostics of the Toyota “robot”.

The Toyota robotic gearbox combines the comfort of an automatic transmission and the price of almost a manual transmission, and is quite reliable. Problems with a robot are most often associated with operating and driving characteristics. Most breakdowns of a robotic gearbox are determined using computer diagnostics of manual transmission. Based on the received codes, electrical faults and mechanical problems are identified.

Diagnostics of the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Auris robot includes:

  • visual inspection;
  • checking the functionality of the robot box in various modes;
  • reading fault codes from the gearbox control unit;
  • viewing the operating parameters of all electronic and electrical transmission systems in real time;
  • monitoring the level of transmission fluid and the presence of small metal particles in it, indicating wear of the gearbox parts;
  • checking the operation of gearbox actuators.

Comprehensive diagnostics allows you to accurately determine the nature of the malfunction and determine the most effective type of repair of a robotic transmission on a Toyota.

Typical malfunctions of MMT and their elimination

If you own one of the Toyota Corolla, Prius, Yaris, Auris or Aygo cars manufactured between 2005 and 2008, then you may have encountered the following problems:

  • jolts and jerks when changing gears;
  • delays in upshifting or downshifting;
  • jerks at start and inability to move smoothly in reverse or forward gear (the car starts moving only at high engine speeds).

The appearance of the listed symptoms is associated with a malfunction of the robotic box control unit,

it will need to be replaced or repaired. There is an express replacement option, when you purchase a refurbished control unit with a warranty, the cost of which is significantly lower than the price of a new unit.

The most common mechanical failure associated with Multimode is worn clutch parts

which appears as a result of prolonged use or aggressive driving style. In this case, the box goes into emergency mode; to repair it, you should immediately contact our service center.

Intensive use of Toyota Corolla, Auris, Yaris, Aygo or Verso cars with a robotic transmission leads to wear of the brushes, the appearance of dirt, a break in the actuator electric motor circuit, as well as wear of the drive gears. The malfunction manifests itself in the form of jerks when starting to move from a standstill; it can be eliminated by carrying out appropriate repair work and replacing worn parts.

Advantages and disadvantages of robotic gearboxes

The main advantages of these boxes include:

  • Minimum fuel consumption, which is achieved with proper use.
  • Ease of control (especially noticeable in traffic jams).
  • Smooth acceleration.
  • Inexpensive selling price.

The main disadvantages of the robot are:

  • Long transmission response time.
  • The clutch disc is often subject to a lot of heat.
  • A large number of robot failures (every 6–8 thousand kilometers).
  • Minimum clutch disc strength.
  • Short service life of the control unit.
  • High costs associated with frequent robot repairs.

Thanks to the warranty on the Corolla, modern drivers can replace the gearbox control unit or the entire clutch package absolutely free. This can be done at any warranty service stations for Toyota vehicles.

Using a car with a manual transmission in winter

As mentioned earlier, the main reason for the unstable operation of manual transmissions is low and high temperatures. And if in the summer everything is clear, in order to ensure normal functioning it is necessary to ensure stable cooling of all manual transmission systems, then in the winter a number of recommendations must be followed.

Before you drive your car, you need to warm it up (warm-up time depends on the thermometer reading: the lower the outside temperature, the longer it takes to warm up the car).

The vehicle should be stored in a well-heated room (at a temperature of 5 to 15 degrees).

Thanks to the above recommendations, you can ensure more stable operation of the box in winter.

The transmission does not start

Corollas with this type of gearbox were sold for several years (since 2006), but due to shortcomings, they were discontinued. Here are a number of their characteristic disadvantages:

  • Frequent failures, due to which you have to frequently perform initialization, sometimes every 5-7 thousand kilometers.
  • Overheating of the clutch disc is often observed, which leads to its premature wear and the need for replacement after 60 thousand km.
  • The control unit quickly fails, and it also has to be replaced with a new one.
  • The gearbox takes a long time to respond, this is especially noticeable when driving in traffic jams.

Today, at most specialized warranty service stations for Toyota vehicles, the initialization procedure, replacement of the transmission control unit, and even replacement of the entire clutch kit along with the ECU are done free of charge under warranty. But sooner or later the warranty period ends, and the car owner has to solve this problem on his own.

The most common malfunction when operating a 2007, 2008 Toyota Corolla is that the manual transmission does not engage gears. The reasons for such a breakdown may be the following factors:

  • Long-term use of the car in winter. The sensor responsible for gear shifting “freezes”, because of this, when you try to change gear, the box is knocked into neutral.
  • Gear shifting problems also occur due to a faulty actuator. If this mechanism breaks down, it must be replaced immediately.
  • A similar problem can occur when operating a car in the summer. However, in this case, the robot on the Toyota Corolla 2008 simply overheats.
  • The problem may occur if the clutch overheats.

Operation of a robotic gearbox implies the presence of a malfunction such as engaging neutral gear. Often on a Corolla robot this happens as follows: the car is quite well warmed up, moves along the highway smoothly and without any obvious deviations, the check light suddenly lights up, neutral is switched on, and the car loses speed until it comes to a complete stop.

In order to fix the problem, you need to turn off the engine, wait a certain time and turn it on again. However, this move does not completely eliminate the problem.

Often, failure occurs due to wear of a pair of release bearings, as well as the guide. If you replace these components, then diagnostics will not be required, and the replacement process can be carried out at home.
