Mitsubishi is late with the modernization of the L200: the new Toyota Hilux has become more productive and more comfortable

Just a few years ago, on the Russian automobile market, pickup trucks were not popular among potential buyers, which is why they were quite difficult to find for sale. However, over time, everything has changed, and now domestic motorists often consider just such cars for future purchase. For this reason, several interesting cars have recently entered the Russian car market, among which the Japanese representative of the F-class Toyota Hilux in the eighth generation in a restyled version is of particular interest. At the moment, this model has a lot of competitors, among which the Japanese Mitsubishi L200 especially stands out. Each car is interesting in its own way, which is why it is worth comparing them, and then choosing which is better - Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200.

Comparison of technical characteristics

Nowadays, many car enthusiasts first of all look at the main key characteristics of the vehicle when buying a car. That’s why it’s worth starting a review of cars with a story about the main parameters of pickup trucks, namely:

  • The Hilux has a top speed of 175 km/h, the competitor has a top speed of 169 km/h;
  • Toyota spends 7.3 liters of fuel per 100 km, its rival - 7.7 liters of fuel;
  • both cars are sold in Russia only with diesel engines;
  • these pickups are produced exclusively in all-wheel drive versions;
  • both models comply with the Euro-5 environmental standard;
  • to accelerate to the first hundred, competitors spend 13.2 with the Toyota Hilux and 13.5 with the Mitsubishi L200.

It is worth noting that in this case, we considered cars in the most inexpensive and technically simplest configurations, since such options are most popular in the Russian car market due to their availability and good equipment.

Which model is better for whom?

The time has come to determine which is better: Hilux or L200. Toyota is a practical car, without any frills:

  • the Hilux has a high driver's seating position and large mirrors, which gives a good overview;
  • the height of the ground clearance prevents the car from getting into a “sit on its belly” situation;
  • Handling is good both in the city and on the highway.

But the length of the platform for loads is shorter than that of its competitor. Overall, the model is powerful and highly reliable. Hilux is expected to be preferred by Toyota connoisseurs and admirers of the classics.

L200:

  • more attractive in appearance;
  • despite its size, it performs well in urban environments;
  • the only difficulty is parking due to the lack of interior mirrors;
  • has a greater carrying capacity than its competitor - up to 1,050 kg versus 900 kg.

If you still need to compare L200 vs Hilux, then the L200 will be more suitable for lovers of originality or admirers of extreme types of recreation - hunting and fishing.

Engines and transmission

In order to make the right choice between a Toyota Hilux or a Mitsubishi L200, you should definitely pay attention to the power part of the pickups. In this regard, both cars deserve attention, as they are equipped with reliable and unpretentious engines and transmissions. As for the clear favorite in this point of comparison, it is difficult to name it, since each of the cars named is sold on the Russian automobile market, both with the main power plant and gearbox, and with alternative engines and gearboxes. For this reason, we have to go into detail to name the undisputed leader.

The new Japanese Toyota Hilux pickup truck, which debuted on the Russian automobile market this year, is equipped exclusively with diesel power units with turbochargers. This car uses 2.4 and 2.8-liter engines capable of generating 150 and 200 horsepower, and can also transmit 400 and 500 Nm of torque to the wheels, respectively. The more recent updated Japanese model received a 6-speed manual gearbox in its weakest modifications. For more productive versions of the pickup truck, a reliable and unpretentious 6-band automatic transmission is provided. As mentioned earlier, this model is presented on the Russian market exclusively in all-wheel drive versions.

Another Japanese F-class representative is also equipped with turbodiesel power plants. In this case we are talking about 2.4-liter engines, which, depending on the degree of boost and supercharger power, are capable of generating 154 and 181 horsepower, as well as transmitting 380 and 430 Nm of torque to the wheels. Depending on the configuration, this car is equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, or a modern 6-speed automatic transmission, which is famous for its reliability and the absence of the need for repairs at certain mileages. Like its direct competitor, the Mitsubishi L200 is sold in Russia only in diesel variations.

Ride quality, maneuverability and handling.

If a car enthusiast chooses a passenger truck for himself, then he must pay attention to its cross-country ability. In this regard, both cars boast impressive performance and characteristics. On these pickups you can move freely not only around the city, but also conquer off-road terrain, for the simple reason that this is possible not only with a reliable and unpretentious suspension, appropriate equipment and a lot of auxiliary systems, but also with impressive ground clearance. For the Mitsubishi L200, this parameter is 220 mm (in the most affordable modification it is 200 mm). As for its direct rival, the ground clearance is 227 mm. This is quite enough to freely cope with serious obstacles in your path.

If we consider the driving performance and handling of the Toyota Hilux, then at first glance it may seem that we are not talking about a large pickup truck, but about a standard city crossover. This model has excellent maneuverability, as well as good dynamics. Inside, the driver and passengers can feel all the comfort, since the car simply does not notice any bumps in its path. It is also worth noting that a reliable and unpretentious suspension is installed here. The front uses an independent MacPherson spring system, and the rear has a dependent leaf spring suspension. The car is equipped with anti-roll bars, as well as ventilated disc brakes on each wheel.

As for the Mitsubishi L200, this pickup truck is not much inferior to its more recent rival. The car also confidently holds the road, easily takes turns, and in addition, allows the driver to enjoy every kilometer traveled, regardless of the quality of the road surface. If we talk about the suspension system for this model, then it is by and large the same as that of the rival, with the only exception that drum brakes are used on the rear wheel axle, regardless of the configuration. There are also anti-roll bars at the front and rear to ensure that this massive passenger truck does not roll over during the next turn, and in addition, does not roll too much during sharp maneuvers.

Comparison of configurations and prices

To choose which is better - Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200, it is not enough to consider only the power part, since many motorists pay special attention to the cost, as well as the equipment provided by the manufacturers. In this regard, the L200 is somewhat superior to its direct rival, however, as soon as it comes to technical equipment, the advantage again goes to the more recent Hilux model. That’s why it’s worth delving into the finer details and figuring out what interesting things automakers have prepared in their cars in order to attract attention to their vehicles from car enthusiasts, most of whom like the abundance of options that are relevant today.

Currently, potential buyers in Russia can purchase a pickup truck from the Japanese company Toyota Hilux for 2,562,000 – 3,269,000 rubles. This car is sold in two basic trim levels, as well as an extended version. In the basic version, the car is equipped with such options as air conditioning, cruise control, good multimedia, a good audio system, heated front seats, a light sensor, many electronic assistants, and in addition, a number of security systems. If we talk about the special series of the car, then keyless access to the interior, a remote engine start function, an advanced infotainment system, a rear view camera, parking sensors and a lot of other useful features aimed at the driver and accompanying passengers are added here.

As mentioned earlier, the Japanese Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck is cheaper than its direct rival, which is not surprising in principle, since the model entered the Russian market much earlier. You can currently buy such a car for 2,269,000 – 2,892,000 rubles. In the most affordable modification, the car is equipped with air conditioning, a standard audio system, power steering, a 12V socket, a cigarette lighter and an ashtray, and in addition, many other functions aimed at comfort and safety. If we consider the top variation, then it adds such functions as a rear view camera, climate control, electric folding mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, heated seats, as well as a lot of other useful and popular options.

Let's summarize

Both versions of the car have the best technical solutions from the manufacturers. Toyota is famous for quality and durability, while Mitsubishi offers practical and cheaper solutions.

Mitsubishi is moving with the times and is currently leaving the scene as an independent brand. Soon the three diamonds will become part of the Renault-Nissan concern, and therefore the rapprochement with the French will take an even shorter time frame. Toyota's salon clearly comes out a winner, being a realm of luxury, opulence and quality. At the same time, the brand asks to pay for this luxury, not forgetting about quality. The latest generation L200 is also capable of offering luxury solutions.

We should also say a little about the price, because for the average L200 configuration official dealers ask for about 30,000 USD, and for the Hilux - from 35,000 USD. Of course, the price was affected by the eminence of both brands, which in turn does not exclude quality along with a wide list of additional options.

Maintenance costs

In this case, it is impossible to say with one hundred percent certainty that one model is noticeably cheaper than another in terms of costs, since these cars are approximately located in the same price segment. However, if you pay attention to even a slight difference in the price of spare parts and consumables, it becomes obvious that the Japanese Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck will be a more interesting option for the upcoming purchase, although this difference is not the most significant. Here we should also not forget about the daily potential costs of motorists for purchasing fuel. It is precisely in this regard that the Japanese model, updated this year, looks more interesting, since this model is equipped with more economical and modern engines. Consequently, it will not be possible to trace any serious differences between vehicles.

Appearance and dimensions

Of course, when comparing Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200, we must not forget about such an indicator as the appearance of the vehicles, since almost all motorists pay close attention to this parameter. To be honest, in this case the more recent Japanese model will seem more interesting, since it is endowed with a unique appearance and at the same time does not resemble the younger cars of the brand. As for another Japanese car, the Mitsubishi L200, it can clearly remind a motorist of the Outlander model, especially in the front. Apparently, this is why many potential buyers are less likely to consider this car for purchase than to choose competitors. Both pickups boast a stylish and ultra-modern front end with narrow head optics and an impressively sized radiator grille. If you look at the rear parts of the car, they do not have a serious difference and look somewhat mediocre against the background of the whole car.

Also, when choosing a new car, if we are talking about a pickup truck, do not forget about the dimensions. The vehicles featured in this comparison (double cab light trucks) boast the following features:

  • L200 length is 5,225 mm, the opponent’s is 5,325 mm;
  • Mitsubishi width is 1,815 mm, Toyota - 1,954 mm;
  • the height of the L200 pickup is 1,775 mm, for Toyota - 1,815 mm;
  • the wheelbase of the Mitsubishi model is 3,000 mm, the rival’s is 3,085 mm;
  • The curb weight of the new Japanese car is 2,130 kg, for the L200 it is 1,930 kg.

In general, if you look only at the numbers, it may seem that the updated and more recent pickup truck from Mitsubishi is noticeably smaller than its rival, however, when visually reviewing the cars, such a difference is not so striking.

Salon and trunk

As for the interior decoration, both models from Japanese manufacturers look ultra-modern and stylish. It is clearly visible that experienced designers worked hard on the interior decoration and thought through all the main points, down to the smallest details. It will not be so easy to name a clear favorite here, for the simple reason that both models look rich and high-tech. Everything is provided here, from comfort elements to components that emphasize the overall style of decoration.

The Japanese Toyota Hilux pickup truck is made in the traditional style of the brand. This car has decorative lighting around the perimeter, which greatly emphasizes the dark color of the upholstery. When you first get into the car, you get the feeling that you are driving not an off-road pickup truck, but a model close to the premium segment. Practicality is provided here in the location of the main controls. The car has an unusual digital display on the top of the front panel. What stands out most is the center console with its huge multimedia screen and stylish climate control unit. In addition, pleasant emotions are evoked by the dashboard, where the usual scales with moderate backlight are located.

If we talk about another Japanese pickup truck, the Mitsubishi L200, then it is in no way inferior to its direct competitor. The design is made in the same black color, the quality and high cost of the materials used are visible. In addition, there are also some decorative elements that emphasize the main style of the model. What attracts the most attention in the pickup truck is the center console, which smoothly turns into a tunnel. Here, the climate control unit deserves attention, as well as the large screen of the multimedia system with touch control, located in the usual place.

Also, when reviewing cars, many car enthusiasts often pay attention to the capacity of the luggage compartments. It is worth noting that these cars do not have a trunk as such, since instead there is an open side on which you can transport large items and bulky items without the slightest problem. The body capacity of the L200 model is 1,061 liters, while this pickup truck is somewhat inferior in size to its competitor. As for the updated Japanese, its body can hold about 1,150 liters.

What is better to choose

At the end of this comparison, it is necessary to summarize a little and highlight which of the cars really deserves attention, and which one is better to refrain from buying. In this case, it was not possible to identify a clear favorite, for the simple reason that each model is superior to its competitor in some way. That is why potential buyers will have to be guided solely by their own taste preferences, as well as evaluate their financial capabilities, since the updated Japanese Toyota Hilux costs more than its rival, and at the same time, quite significantly.

Verdict

Pickups from Mitsubishi and VW, so different in design, price and consumer audience, are very similar in character. Equally temperamental and easy to handle, these are real hard workers, well adapted to perform everyday work and household tasks in the most difficult weather and road conditions. Other options

Also, when choosing one of the presented cars, you should not immediately rush to purchase it, since these models are not the only representatives of the F-Class with a double cabin. If desired, potential buyers can also consider purchasing an interesting German Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck, which also recently appeared on the Russian market. Without a doubt, another Japanese Isuzu D-Max also deserves attention here. In addition, the Chinese Great Wall Wingle 7 cannot be discounted. And of course, some motorists will certainly be interested in the Russian UAZ pickup truck, built on the basis of the popular Patriot SUV.

Overcoming off-road conditions

The element of all-wheel drive pickups is off-road. We can only regret that there are fewer and fewer cars like the L200 or Hilux capable of overcoming truly difficult obstacles. Much depends on the tires installed on SUVs. On road tires that do not have a tread with a large pattern and developed lugs, there is a risk of ending up in an unpleasant situation. But if everything is in order with the tires, then you can safely go hunting or fishing. The differences between Toyota and Mitsubishi will be as follows.

  • The suspension and all-wheel drive system on the Toyota Hilux allow you to feel quite confident when driving on sand, muddy clay tracks or loose snow. But since the engine has to be turned up to achieve the best torque, and the gearbox on the car is mechanical, there is a risk of the wheels slipping at an unnecessary moment.
  • The SuperSelect all-wheel drive on the Mitsubishi L200 provides slightly better off-road characteristics of the car, and the good traction of the power unit at the bottom allows you to make mistakes that could be fatal for a high-revving engine. For this, the pickup can be forgiven for its sluggish acceleration on the highway.

As for the chassis capabilities, they are quite close for both cars, thanks to the high ground clearance of more than 200 mm, the enviable energy intensity of the suspension and the efficient operation of the steering drive. Mitsubishi L200 or Toyota Hilux. – both cars are able to confidently move on both rocky and clayey soils.
