Starter repair on Toyota Carina with 7A-FE engine

Comments • 14

No, the other two brushes are clamped with a metal mustache, they were not soldered

Well, I didn’t add anything of my own, most likely from the factory

Thanks for the useful video. I went to remove my starter, otherwise I have had to tap on it with a key for 2 days now, since the battery charging indicator on the dashboard does not go out, and after tapping on the starter it disappears(

I chewed everything and put it in my mouth, it’s very clear, well done))

add to favorites))) I’ve been suffering from periodic clicks for three years and now I’ve seen it from inside, I’ll take it apart

Thanks for the comment)

Useful video. Thank you!

Hello, can you please tell me I have exactly the same starter on the crown at 170, 5A engine, the starter stopped turning, knocked on it, it helped several times, after which it started turning very poorly, you can say chewing on the car, did it stop starting, is it the brushes or not?

Most likely yes, but you need to open it, it’s so hard to say for sure..

@Pavel Samorodov car Toyota 07.

@Pavel Samorodov hello. I clarified the details, in general the story is this: after an accident, the car sat without repairs on the alarm until the battery was completely discharged. And a week ago they charged it at the battery station, they said so, like a battery with a capacity of 55 AH, but since it was completely discharged, now they cannot charge it completely, but only like only up to 35 Ah.? I didn’t take it from them myself, my son took it from them, so, and today they called and said they installed the radiator, they couldn’t start it, when you turn the key there is complete silence,))) But the emergency lights go off,))) But the master doesn’t There was a key fob for the signaling, but only the key was duplicated, he said that when measuring the battery, it showed only 11.0 V. BUT he did not try another battery, but simply put the battery on charge until tomorrow. And the battery is only 2 years old and is maintenance-free “Tab polar Asia 55AH”

Replacing brushes

Starter brushes wear out quickly and need to be replaced periodically. If the brushes are worn down to 6 mm or less, they must be replaced. How to do it:

  1. Disconnect the cable connection from the starter terminal.
  2. Remove the screws holding the manifold cover together.
  3. Remove the cover from the housing.
  4. Remove other elements: o-ring, gasket, clamp, seal.
  5. Inspect the brush holder.
  6. Remove the starter brush holder. After this, the brushes will jump out of their sockets on their own, because the walls of the housing will no longer exert pressure on them. The parts will hang on the wires.
  7. Clean the brush holder.
  8. Assess the condition of the brushes and replace worn parts.
  9. Perform alignment.
  10. The assembled holder is installed back into the housing.
  11. Install the bushing seal.
  12. Replace the manifold cover.
  13. Gaskets, a seal and a clamp are put on top.
  14. Tighten the bolts.
  15. Place the shaft cover on top.
  16. Tighten the fasteners.
  17. Install the starter into the car.
  18. Try to start the engine.
  19. In case of failure, it is advisable to contact the service center.

In the case of foreign cars, everything is a little more complicated. Ordering original brushes for foreign cars is expensive. In addition, a lot of time is spent on the delivery of spare parts itself. However, if desired, even ordinary copper-graphite brushes can be corrected with a file and built into a foreign car.

Soldering

How to prepare starter brushes for soldering without welding equipment, at home:

  1. clean off the mastic;
  2. cut off the old brushes and tin the copper on the “tails” to increase the contact area;
  3. heat the “tails” with a soldering iron and remove the brushes;
  4. Solder new parts into the vacant spaces.

If the brushes do not fit well, they must first be carefully ground on all sides. The hole for the brush wire can also be widened with an awl. How to start soldering:

  1. Place the brush on the winding.
  2. Fasten with wire.
  3. Cover tightly with solder - flux or rosin.
  4. Weld copper. This is done under constant voltage.

It is recommended to use a current of 40 A from graphite electrodes. What you will need for work:

  • fully charged battery;
  • cables with contacts on clothespins;
  • graphite brush;
  • acid;
  • refractory solder, flux;
  • strong soldering iron 42 V minimum;
  • dark glasses or welding helmet.
