Engines and gearboxes
The Toyota Corolla engine range has not changed during the latest restyling. The same time-tested “aspirated” engines are available in three formations:
- 1.3 liter 99 hp (index 1NR-FE);
- 1.6 liters 122 hp (1ZR-FE);
- 1.8 liters 140 hp (2ZR-FE).
The “youngest” 1.3-liter unit is combined only with a 6-speed manual transmission. The traction characteristics of the engine allow the car to reach 12.6 seconds when accelerating to 100 km/h, which is clearly not conducive to active driving. This version is suitable, first of all, for those who prefer a measured ride with smooth acceleration and carefully prepare for overtaking on a two-lane road. It simply won’t work out differently here.
The 1ZR-FE engine with 122 “horses” under the hood provides much better dynamics. It gets along well with both a 6-speed manual transmission and a V-belt variator MultiDrive S. The first tandem is a little more “driver-friendly” - acceleration to “hundreds” takes 10.5 seconds. A car with a CVT accelerates harder, taking at least 11.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. In general, both modifications are excellent for urban operating conditions, and they also perform well on the highway, if you do not greatly exceed the established speed limits. The fuel consumption of a Toyota Corolla 1.6 with “mechanics” is on average 6.6 liters, a car with a continuously variable transmission consumes around 6.3 liters.
The most powerful 1.8-liter 2ZR-FE engine works only in conjunction with a CVT. The presence of 140 hp generated at lower speeds has a positive effect on dynamic performance. The model accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.2 seconds, which means more confident overtaking on the highway, and generally some kind of feeling of drive.
