New 2021 Toyota C-HR. Characteristics, features, advantages over competitors


The C-HR subcompact crossover from the Japanese automaker Toyota has been produced since 2021, but until now it has never been modernized. And the auto giant’s managers decided to correct this situation. First, in October 2021, engineers presented a restyling of the SUV, and in 2021 a new model appeared.

Toyota has transformed externally and internally. Electronic equipment has been added and dynamic characteristics have been improved. The interior has changed slightly, however, and certain innovations have appeared in the cabin.

Attention! And C – HR stands for Couple High Rider. Translated into Russian it means “Coupe with a high body position.”

Equipment

For Russian consumers, the Toyota C-HR is available with two types of power units. These are a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated and a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with a turbine. Each engine option is four-cylinder. They are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). There is a choice of drive, which comes either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The crossover is available in two trim levels: “Hot” and “Cool”.

The first modification is a car with a two-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 148 horsepower. Paired with it is a variator capable of transmitting traction to the front wheels. The machine is equipped with the following options:

  • 6 airbags;
  • rain and light sensor;
  • dual-zone climate control;
  • parking sensors “in a circle”;
  • LED lighting fixtures;
  • 8-inch touch screen;
  • camera in the rear of the car;
  • Cruise control;
  • fabric interior;
  • heated steering wheel, front seats, windshield.

The “Cool” modification is considered top-end. The car in this configuration is equipped with all-wheel drive. Under the hood is a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine producing 116 horsepower paired with a continuously variable transmission. In addition to those electronic assistants that are included in the configuration below, an assistant when leaving a parking space, a leather interior, and a luxury media system with 9 JBL speakers have been added. The outside of the car is painted in two colors. You can enter the interior without a key thanks to the “comfort access” function. In addition, the crossover in this modification can monitor blind spots.

The price of the configurations is divided among themselves by an average of 400 thousand rubles.

The Japanese company Toyota announced the release of a new subcompact budget SUV, Toyota Raize, which will take a place in the manufacturer’s lineup one step below the Toyota C-HR crossover. The official premiere of Toyota Rise 2021 will take place on November 5 this year, but sales have already begun in the local market. Toyota entrusted the production of the new compact crossover to its subsidiary Daihatsu.

The price of the Toyota Raize ranges from 1,679,000 to 2,282,200 yen (from 976,550 to 1,320,000 rubles), and the Toyota Rocky costs a little more from 1,705,000 to 2,422,200 yen (from 989,700 to 1,400,000 rubles).

So far, the Raize and Rocky crossovers have appeared only on the domestic market, but soon the models will become available in Latin America and Asia; the new product will not be offered in Russia, which is a pity.

The front part of the budget SUV Toyota Rise 2021 is essentially a smaller copy of the front end of the older fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 crossover. There is a raised hood, modern head optics, a massive front bumper, a large radiator grille, and angular slots house fog lights and LED daytime running lights.

The profile and rear of the car almost completely repeat the previously presented Daihatsu Rocky crossover with similar windows in the rear pillars, which smoothly turn into glass on the tailgate. The side lights here are exactly the same, connected by a jumper.

The overall dimensions of the Toyota Raize 2021 body are 3,995 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,525, width 1,620 mm, height 1,695 mm. The ride height and luggage compartment capacity have not yet been specified.

In the interior of the new product, where there is a clear connection with the related Toyota Yaris hatchback, the front seats have pronounced side support bolsters, a 9-inch multimedia system screen, a digital instrument panel - the speedometer is paired with a 7-inch color screen, which has four display options: Advanced , Exciting, Simple, Analog.

The list of equipment includes the Smart Assist safety complex, which includes automatic braking with pedestrian recognition, the Smart Panorama Parking Assist function with voice and graphic parking prompts and adaptive cruise control with a speed limiter.

Eight enamel colors are available for body painting: beige, blue, cyan, yellow, red, grey, black and white, and three combinations with a black roof are also offered. Styling packages are also offered to change the design: powerful, sporty, premium, aggressive TRD and plus three options from the Modellista bureau.

Specifications

The Japanese claim that the DNGA chassis has been redesigned from scratch with a front independent suspension with McPherson struts and a rear semi-independent beam. The default is front-wheel drive, but the Dynamic Torque Control 4WD all-wheel drive system is also available. As standard, crossovers are equipped with 17-inch wheels with 195/60 R17 tires. The luggage compartment capacity is 369 liters, the company assures that this is the largest trunk in the class.

Under the hood of the crossovers there will be a single petrol 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine 1KR-VET 98 hp. (at 6000 rpm) and 140 Nm (from 2400 to 4000 rpm). The engine is paired with a D-CVT variator (an upgraded Direct Shift-CVT box), which combines a V-belt mechanism with a set of gears, as in a manual transmission, thereby providing powerful acceleration without unnecessary noise and increasing efficiency at high speeds. Average fuel consumption on the European WLTC cycle is 5.37 liters per 100 km.

Both trim levels are equipped with a gasoline power unit. The 1.2-liter turbocharged engine has 185 Nm of torque, while the 2.0-liter has 189 Nm.

Depending on the configuration, acceleration to hundreds is 11.2-11.5 km/h. At the same time, the maximum speed is 180 and 195 kilometers per hour, respectively.

Average fuel consumption in city mode is from 8.1 to 8.8 liters. On the highway - 5.7-5.8 liters. In mixed mode - 6.6-6.9 liters.

Specifications

The SUV is built on a modular platform called DNGA. Although the name does not mean anything to many, this platform has an ideal chassis architecture, just for compact cars like the Rise.

Looking under the hood, it turns out that this is a small car. The engine capacity is only 1.0 liters. But it could not have happened without the support of the turbine. With its help, the gasoline unit produces 98 hp. at 140 Hm. For now, the line of power units will only be like this. Further, if sales meet expectations, insiders predict an increase in trim levels up to the appearance of hybrid versions.

Design

The new Toyota C-HR 2021 body is more streamlined. At the same time, the car became brighter, but at the same time more aggressive. It is due to its futuristic shape that Toyota has gained the greatest popularity among the younger generation of drivers.

The body has several curved lines and a menacing look from the front optics. The bright design of the front part of the crossover catches your eye. A wave-like pattern is clearly visible on the hood, and the central part is significantly recessed. The serious squint of the headlight is filled with bright xenon beams, which softly but at a wide angle illuminate the road. Moreover, such lighting comes in both trim levels.

An interesting design was also invented for the side of the car. Several relief patterns are visible on this side. The roof also has a non-standard shape, and in the top model it is also painted in glossy black, which is also presented on the convex rear-view mirrors and additional turn signals.

The rear of the Toyota C-HR looks no less aggressive than the front. The rear of the car begins with a sloping roof equipped with a long spoiler. The tailgate has a medium-sized window that feels more like a design element than a viewing object. Next, an aerodynamic protrusion appears on the body, which literally falls like a vertical wall perpendicular to the surface. It is complemented by rear lights, which are made in a design no less aggressive than the headlights.

The body kit on the lower part of the rear bumper contains triangular parts that house the fog lights. The lanterns are framed by a frame coated with black glossy paint. Particularly striking are the two impressively sized exhaust pipes.

The interior of the car is of no less interest. The design of the interior decoration has incorporated modern trends with fancy angular shapes. First of all, this concerns the monitor, which seems to have deliberately “crawled out” from the front panel, bending the edges of the panel.

Since the screen is touch-sensitive, the number of keys under it is minimal. Everything is transferred to the computer. For driver convenience, most electronic controls have been moved to buttons on the steering wheel. That is, you rarely have to take your hands off the steering wheel.

Competitors

In Russia, the direct competitor of the Toyota C-HR is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. These crossovers are presented in the same price category and have similar equipment. But if we consider the concept and exterior features of the CH-R, then the Nissan Juke can compete with the Japanese model.

Comparison with analogues

B-class crossovers are placed on a par with the Toyota C-HR. These include the following cars:

  • Suzuki Vitara S;
  • Nissan Juke;
  • KIA Seltos.

Externally, the cars are similar, but if you look closely at the details, you will immediately find many differences. Toyota is no different in trunk capacity. In this regard, the Suzuki Vitara S leads the way. The C-HR has 20 liters less, but 60 more than the Nissan Juke, which surpasses the rest in handling. But the dynamic characteristics of Toyota are better. The C-HR also has the best braking performance. The general braking performance of each crossover is approximately the same, however, the first “grip” is most correct in the updated Toyota C-HR.

“Japanese” shows itself to be more profitable on a country road. Bumps are overcome smoother and more imperceptibly than competitors. This effect was achieved by introducing a multi-link suspension into the rear axle.

But the Toyota C-HR will have problems with curbs in the city. The too-low “skirt” of the front bumper allows you to lift your nose over the sidewalk. When approaching the curb with the rear, you must remember that the lower part of the car does not start from the bumper, but from the exhaust pipe, which looks down and is located below the spoiler.

As for the level of comfort in the cabin, Toyota comes out on top here. The materials used are of a higher quality, and the ergonomics of the seats and control modules are significantly superior to competitors.

Options and prices

This is not to say that the 2021 Toyota C-HR received a truly new body. The crossover, judging by the published photos, has retained the same exterior, which has been replenished with slightly modified bumpers and redesigned head optics. Toyota did not significantly adjust previous configurations, and therefore prices changed slightly after the planned restyling. The same applies to technical characteristics. Although, due to the relatively low sales of the Japanese model, the manufacturer should expand the list of engines available to the C-HR.

Hot

So far, the 2021 Toyota C-HR is supplied to the Russian market in only two versions. The starting version of the Hot with a 2-liter engine and a continuously variable transmission costs almost 1.83 million rubles. This amount included:

  • engine immobilizer;
  • electronically controlled parking brake;
  • additional cabin heater;
  • part-size spare tire;
  • on-board computer;
  • rear camera;
  • 8-inch screen with touch control;
  • six-speaker audio system;
  • separate climate into 2 zones;
  • front and rear parking sensors.

The initial configuration of the Japanese crossover includes all-LED lighting (including headlights), light and rain sensors, electrically adjustable heated side mirrors and a leather-wrapped, heated multifunction steering wheel. The interior has an engine start button and a 4.2-inch color display located on the instrument panel. All seats in the C-HR in the launch version are upholstered in fabric. The relatively high level of safety that characterizes the Japanese new product is ensured by:

  • 4 pillows and 2 side curtains;
  • anti-lock braking system with EBD;
  • driver assistant, activated when driving uphill;
  • braking assistant;
  • electronically controlled stability control system;
  • tire pressure monitoring sensors;
  • constant speed holding system.

Also included in the starting package are heated windshields and first-row seats, central locking with a remote control key and 4 electric windows. For an additional fee, a navigation system is offered along with the basic equipment.

Cool

The maximum version of the Toyota C-HR 2021 now costs almost 2.17 million rubles. This surcharge, reaching 340 thousand rubles, is due to the fact that the Japanese crossover in this version is equipped with a turbo engine, branded all-wheel drive and seats trimmed with genuine leather.

In the top-end package, the manufacturer also included an electric driver's seat that adjusts its position in six directions, collision avoidance systems with emergency braking and blind spot monitoring, and an intelligent parking assistant. The C-HR in its maximum modification is offered in a body painted in 2 colors with a metallic sheen. Additionally, this package includes a proprietary air ionizer in the cabin and an improved audio system with nine speakers.

I was pleasantly surprised by the absence of extraneous noise in the cabin. That is, sound insulation is at the highest level, like a good “Bavarian”. Only those sitting in the rear seats suffer from wheel noise. I didn't really like the front seats. An overweight person or driver wearing winter outerwear will not be entirely comfortable. The rear window is, of course, small. You have to focus only on the mirrors.

Toyota C-HR drives great. When driving, it doesn’t shake, you don’t fall into holes, you don’t bounce on ledges. Other Toyotas don't have this. The body is rigid, so you can get stuck in a snowdrift or hang on the curb in winter. And even on one that is below average. The ground clearance is quite low.

You can feel the Toyota quality. The machine is very compact and dynamic. This is exactly what I love, and I’ve always lacked this maneuverability. They were scared by the low ground clearance. He's really short, but that's not a problem for me. Although this is a crossover, it is still a city car. I really liked the multimedia with a large and sensitive monitor. Everything is convenient and clear. I fell in love with her just from one photo.

Inside, Toyota designers did some magic. What Daihatsu itself showed does not correspond to modern requirements. Therefore, Rise has almost completely revised the architecture of the dashboard and center console.

It’s worth saying right away that this is the only thing the manufacturer shared. The rest of the part with the central tunnel, front seats and rear sofa is still a mystery to everyone.

From what is available, you can see a new dashboard, an analogue one with backlighting, a 7-inch multimedia screen framed by small chrome moldings and a new multifunction steering wheel.

It is immediately clear that the finishing materials are much more expensive than the original, where cheap plastic was noticeable. Obviously, Toyota also worked on the rest of the interior, but details will come later.
