In terms of the number of configurations, the new Mark II is not inferior to the previous generation. Moreover, thanks to the bubble economy period, the qualitative approach to equipping models of this generation has changed. To express this difference, it should be mentioned that all the changes that occurred in those years became basic. For example, there are ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear; There were options with all-wheel drive, versions with “mechanics” for the “hottest” engines. The cabin equipment corresponds to the business class level. Fully automatic air conditioning is present even in basic trim levels. In mid-1994, a restyling was carried out, which affected the design of the horizontal line: the radiator grille, the shape of the front bumper and rear lights changed.
The basic versions of “GL” and “Groire” were equipped with a 1.8-liter 4S-FE power unit with a slightly increased power compared to the previous generation - 120 hp. However, this is only enough for calm movement. As before, the six-cylinder in-line 2-liter 1G-FE engine with a power of 135 hp, offered in the “2.0 Grande” trim level, should be considered the optimal minimum. If a hotter option was needed, the buyer could choose the Mark II Tourer S, equipped with an inline 2.5-liter 1JZ-GE engine producing 180 hp. Or, if it’s really hot, the Tourer V version with a 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE engine producing 280 horsepower. The three-liter engine of the same series, 2JZ-GE (220 hp), replaced the 7M-GE engine, which was installed on the previous generation. As before, a diesel option was also offered - 2L-TE with a power of 97 hp.
On the Mark II X90, the front suspension has been updated - it is now a double wishbone design. The time-tested multi-link rear design remains unchanged. In general, the chassis is quite strong and durable, unless the shock absorbers and ball joints of the front suspension are brought to a critical state - the most vulnerable point. The car has grown, but at the same time its weight has even decreased by almost 100 kg compared to the previous model. Due to the high prestige of the Mark II, much attention was paid to noise insulation and qualitatively different suspension settings, which noticeably changed the car’s behavior for the better. Particular attention was paid to ride quality in the Tourer modification models: in addition to the sports suspension, the rear-wheel drive Mark II Tourer V is equipped with a limited slip differential (LSD). All-wheel drive modifications use the FullTime 4WD system with an asymmetrical center differential and a hydromechanical locking clutch.
The Mark II's approach to safety has evolved with the times. Two airbags, ABS, and TRC systems were initially offered only in expensive trim levels, but gradually became part of the equipment of more affordable versions, and a driver's airbag has been standard for all modifications since 1995.
For a long time, the Mark II of this generation represented an almost ideal combination of such indicators as spaciousness, comfort, power, and reliability. At the same time, the car is quite decent in size and has good maneuverability. Cars in this body are quite interesting in terms of price, and it is not difficult to find a copy that can pleasantly surprise you with its still good technical condition.
The seventh generation of the Toyota Mark II sedan, which received the internal factory marking “X90,” premiered in September 1992 and instantly gained popularity in its homeland, and in the early 2000s it truly became a “national hit” in the eastern part of Russia. Compared to its predecessor, the car not only noticeably changed in appearance, but also became larger, acquired new equipment and was updated technically. The three-volume model remained on the assembly line until 1996, after which it gave way to a successor.
Despite its decent size, outwardly the seventh generation Toyota Mark II looks quite sporty and at the same time demonstrates some solidity - a squat and slightly aggressive front end, a fairly dynamic silhouette with a long hood and an elongated trunk, a monumental rear with a massive bumper and a narrow “strip” of lights .
The overall length of the hardtop sedan is 4750 mm, and its width and height are 1750 mm and 1390 mm, respectively. There is a 2730 mm gap between the axles of the car, and under the “belly” you can see a gap of 155 mm. In “combat” form, the four-door weighs from 1250 to 1460 kg, depending on the version.
Even by modern standards, the interior of the “seventh” Toyota Mark II looks good, although it does not shine with special design solutions. A comfortable four-spoke steering wheel, a simple “instrumentation” that provides the basic minimum of information, and a center console that tapers to the bottom, on which the main controls are successfully arranged - the inside of the car is unremarkable, but exudes quality.
In the cabin of the Japanese sedan there is enough free space for four adult passengers - the third passenger in the back will be clearly superfluous due to the high floor tunnel and the profile of the sofa. The front seats boast a wide range of adjustments, but have an excessively flat layout with weak support on the sides.
The seventh “release” of the Toyota Mark II includes a spacious luggage compartment, however, all the advantages of a solid volume are interrupted by a narrow opening and a large loading height, which does not make its use convenient.
Specifications.
For the seventh generation Mark 2, a wide range of power plants was offered - five gasoline and one diesel. The engines were combined with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, driving rear wheels (on “top” versions with a limited slip differential) or a FullTime 4WD all-wheel drive system with a hydromechanical locking clutch and an asymmetrical center differential.
- The gasoline part of the car is formed by in-line four- and six-cylinder engines with a distributed fuel supply, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged. The first includes units with a volume of 1.8-3.0 liters, developing from 120 to 220 horsepower and from 161 to 279 Nm of torque, and the second - a 2.5-liter “six”, the output of which reaches 280 “heads” and 362 Nm of maximum potential.
- The diesel “team” Toyota Mark II is represented by one engine – a 2.4-liter “four” with turbocharging and multipoint injection, generating 97 horsepower and 220 Nm of maximum thrust.
Fuel efficiency is definitely not a weak point of this Japanese sedan: petrol versions consume on average from 7 to 12.1 liters of fuel in combined conditions per “hundred”. Yes, and diesel cars are in perfect order with their gluttony - for 100 kilometers they consume no more than 5 liters of diesel fuel in a combined cycle.
The “seventh” Mark II is designed according to the classical design – a longitudinally located engine at the front and rear-wheel drive (only the 180-horsepower petrol “six” was equipped with an all-wheel drive transmission). The front axle of the car uses an independent double-wishbone architecture, and the rear axle uses a multi-link suspension (“anti-roll bars are used all around”). The sedan's braking system includes disc brakes on all wheels (ventilated at the front) and ABS, and its steering system combines a rack and pinion mechanism and a hydraulic power steering.
The car combines a reliable design, a spacious interior, a good level of comfort, excellent dynamics (especially in the “top” solutions), decent maneuverability and high potential for tuning. But it also has disadvantages - weak light from the front optics, low geometric cross-country ability and the high cost of original spare parts.
Prices.
In the Russian secondary market, Toyota Mark II is still quite popular in 2021 - cars are available at prices starting from 70,000 rubles, and the cost of some “pumped up” modifications reaches up to 1 million rubles.
Toyota Mark II is a legendary car beloved by the entire global automotive community. The model has a history of more than 30 years of production and an entire era that created the cult of the Japanese car.
Story
“Brand” The first generation of the model was born in 1968. From the first to the fifth model "Mark" were especially popular in their country. Starting from the seventh generation, Toyota Mark II received a Tourer V version with a powerful turbocharged engine, and exports to other countries began. From that moment on, the car gradually began to become mega-popular around the world. The ninth generation is currently the last car released under the name “Mark-2”. 110 body changed the car a lot compared to previous versions. The car was produced between 2000 and 2004. After that, the ninth generation was replaced by the Mark X. The Toyota Mark 2 110 body became the last car in the series and the closing of an entire era of Japanese automobile manufacturing. Over the 4 years of production, “Mark” has undergone restyling once.
90s
The Toyota Mark 2 quickly became popular and in demand. However, then the nineties came. This time was not easy for many countries. So in Japan, car sales began to decline significantly, and this model was no exception. So Toyota decided to update a number of its sedans. However, “Mark” was again taken as the basis for creating new cars. And the Toyota Verossa appeared, which became a successful replacement for the previous two models, which were the Chaser and Cresta. Moreover, then the Mark 2 station wagon began to be released. The car was available in two versions - both with all-wheel drive and with front-wheel drive. This car became known under the name Mark II Qualis.
Then, when the production of the seventh generation started, the Tourer V modification was released. Under the hood of this car there was a special engine. Toyota Mark 2 then boasted a turbocharged 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE with 280 hp
However, it’s worth returning to this later, but for now, pay attention to the most significant and famous versions of the model
Description Mark 2
Toyota Mark II is a business class car, mainly for the domestic Japanese market. It was produced from 1968 to 2004, in which it was replaced by the Toyota Mark X. Despite the years that have passed since the end of its production, the car is still popular today, largely thanks to the powerful, legendary 1JZ-GTE engines that came with it engines are also quieter, with a working volume of 1.8 to 3 liters. The whole truth about all these Mark 2 engines has been collected and is waiting for your attention, faults and repairs, correct tuning, oil and much more.
Is it possible to buy a Toyota Reiz in Russia?
Many people are interested in whether it is possible to purchase a Reitz in Russia or export the car outside of China on their own. First you need to answer the question of whether this makes sense, because with the same success and without various difficulties you can purchase a Mark X, of which this model is a complete likeness. The second point is that Toyota Reiz is produced in China under an agreement concluded with Japan. But Tianjin does not have a certificate that would allow Reitz to be exported not only to Russia, but also to other countries. Being adapted for the Chinese consumer, such cars are only available in this country.
Moreover, many car enthusiasts in their discussions on forums do not recommend purchasing Reiz for the simple reason that the assembly is Chinese. Although this is a Toyota, the quality will be significantly different from the original Mark, assembled directly in Japan
And if you want such a car, it’s better to pay attention to the Mark X
Considering that the Reiz is produced on the same platform as the Mark X, as well as the IS and GS models (Lexus), spare parts are interchangeable and are not difficult to find on the market. In advertisements on the Internet you cannot find Reitz models sold to Russian consumers, but in some stores you can find spare parts. For example, if someone wants to put a new engine in a Mark X or Lexus, it is possible to order a contract engine. True, there are very few such proposals.
Exterior
The final generation Mark II was built on a new platform, which the model shared with the Verossa. The wheelbase, compared to the previous generation, has grown by 50 mm (2780 mm), the width (by 5 mm to 1760 mm) and height (by 60 mm, to 1460 mm) of the body have also been increased, while its length has decreased by 25 mm (up to 4735 mm).
The car received an updated radiator grille in a stretched U-shape with six “ribs” dividing it in half in a horizontal plane.
There is a model nameplate on the grille, while on the stern there is a “Toyota” one. The headlights of the car are noticeably rounded (in the previous generation they were rectangular and elongated). The front bumper now has a wide central section of the air intake, partitioned horizontally with a stylistic “blade”. The side niches where the fog lights were located had a narrow wedge-shaped shape.
The manufacturer carefully worked out the aerodynamics of the model, which was improved by a more streamlined shape of the roof and side body panels. The view to the rear from the driver's seat is impaired by the enlarged rear pillars, but the situation is saved by wide side mirrors. The rear bumper of the model is solid and massive. The taillights are triangular in shape and located vertically.
Gearboxes and their capabilities
There are two transmissions to choose from - a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. The automatic transmission is very fast, sensitive, and quickly shifts to lower gears. No problems with her. It can also withstand enormous loads, which is why rear-wheel drive Mark IIs with an automatic transmission are often used in drifting competitions.
Toyota manual transmissions are expensive and rare, so the Mark II with such a transmission is also a rare “beast”, with only 33 offers on the secondary market. But if we compare transmissions, the manual with its short gears looks more advantageous: the car simply “shoots” from a standstill.

Interior
The company took a responsible approach to the release of the final generation of one of its most successful models. Thus, all vehicle configurations received new, high-quality materials for seat upholstery and interior trim. The interior itself, thanks to the increased width and height, has become more spacious than that of the previous generation.
The front seats received wide seats and backrests, limited by small lateral support. And the rear sofa has a new seat with two stylistically highlighted seats and a backrest rolled back.
The instrument panel of the Mark II is rectangular, with rounded edges; it houses a large speedometer and tachometer, to which are attached small sensors for fuel remaining in the tank and coolant temperature.
The center console is V-shaped and houses the multimedia system screen, radio and climate control controls. The steering wheel of the model is three-spoke, with a medium-thick rim.
Problems Toyota Mark II (X90)
The main problem of all “samurai” is the lower ball joints, which need to be changed once a year. The spare parts themselves cost little, about 1,500 rubles, and you can replace them yourself. Shock absorber struts rarely go more than 50 thousand km without problems, after which they ask for replacement. You will have to spend about 10 thousand rubles “in a circle.”
The 1JZ-GTE engine is characterized by wear and tear on the turbines, of which there are two. It manifests itself in loss of power, oil burn and increased fuel consumption. The average cost of one turbine is 15 thousand rubles, plus replacement work. If you buy a Mark with such an engine, carry out a complete diagnostic of the unit at a specialized service center.
Electrics are another weak point of the “carrots”. An older vehicle's insulation has deteriorated in many places, and this can negatively impact the performance of on-board systems.
And another problem of the “samurai” is their dashing past. Many owners drove “carrots” to the limit, not caring about their technical condition. Well, we are completely silent about the condition of the paintwork. The “freshest” example will now be 23 years old, so the example you like may probably have corrosion and damage in the area of the arches and sills.
There may also be cracks in the rear of the transmission tunnel. To find out if they are present, raise the rear seats. Welding the cracks will be a temporary measure; the body will need to be strengthened with struts.

Comfort
Rear passengers will feel like VIPs. Two full seats provide all the amenities for a pleasant trip. The functionality of the rear seats is not much less than for the front ones. Expensive trim levels offer additional monitors in the front seat headrests. In addition, the fifth passenger in this car is not considered deprived, as is customary in luxury business classes. A rather large person can become the third passenger in the back row, and he will hardly embarrass the others. "Mark-2" is one of the most spacious sedans. It remains so to this day. The same can be said about the trunk.
The comfort of the Japanese "carrot"
Comfort is the second significant indicator of the Mark II, and its evolution is obvious. If, from the start of production of the 7th generation, a pair of airbags, ABS and TRC (traction control) were installed only on expensive trim levels, then by the end of 1996, versions with a stability control system and tire pressure sensors began to appear.
The interior is comfortable, however, the transmission tunnel makes the initially five-seater “samurai” a four-seater, but these four are located inside with maximum comfort. But the trunk is small, plus its space is “eaten up” by large arches and “cups” for attaching shock-absorbing struts that protrude inward. In addition, there is a gas tank behind the rear seat, which also steals luggage compartment space.

Specifications
In the ninth generation, manufacturers completely abandoned the use of diesel engines. The developers have changed the high-pressure fuel supply system. Over the 4 years of production, the car was always produced in 6 different trim levels. Two two-liter 1JZ-FSE engines with 160 horsepower each. One of the options was equipped with permanent all-wheel drive. The next 3 trim levels offer a 2.5-liter engine. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions produced 200 horsepower. The turbocharged engine squeezed out as much as 250.
The most powerful version is 3 liters and 220 horsepower. The maximum speed of such a car is 210 km/h, it is equipped with an automatic transmission and “eats” as much as 15 liters per 100 km. For comparison, weaker versions fit into 10 liters. The Mark-2 cannot be called economical.
Mark II in the X110 body was equipped only with gasoline engines of 2.0 (power 160 hp) and 2.5 liters (had three power modifications - naturally aspirated 196 hp, with direct injection - 200 hp, and turbocharged - 280 hp .With.). The power plants were paired with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. Drive – rear/all-wheel drive.

Toyota Mark II engines
The model is available with diesel and petrol units. If you want to easily move around the city or on the highway, choose a 2.4 diesel engine with a 97 hp turbocharger. p., rear-wheel drive, manual or automatic. A 1.8 120 liter petrol engine is suitable for the same purposes. With. The dynamics of these units are modest: the car is large and heavy, it’s unlikely to be possible to get out of the car in 12 seconds.
The best option for car enthusiasts is a 2.0 six-cylinder with 135 liters. With. It is also not dynamic (12-13 seconds to hundreds), in the city it “eats” 14 liters of AI-92-95, but its power is enough to confidently start from a standstill and overtake on the highway. However, it’s not worth tuning it, since there are more interesting versions - 1JZ and 2JZ. Remember the necessary symbols:
- Tourer S - modification with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 180 hp. With.;
- Tourer V - modification with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 280 hp. With.;
- 3.0 Grande G - modification with a volume of 3 liters and a power of 220 hp. With.
The engines of the Mark were so legendary that they deserved mention in the first part of the Fast and the Furious franchise and launched the saying “2JZ - there is no better for a man.”
Most cars are sold with the 1JZ engine (Tourer S and Tourer V) - about 200 offers. Self-sufficient in essence, it has a huge resource. There is a lot of information on it, there are no problems with spare parts. Of course, due to age, the mileage is already approaching or has exceeded 300 thousand km, but finding a good copy is not a problem.
The most “delicious” version is 1JZ-GTE with acceleration of 6-6.5 seconds/100 km. Initially, the engine is “strangled” to 280 “horses”, but in reality it can develop 320-330 forces. This is achieved by a simple boost - increasing the intake pressure without changing the compression ratio. The asking price is about 100 thousand rubles, which is a good third of the cost of the car itself.
The Tourer V version is a favorite in motorsport. A powerful rear-wheel drive car with an indestructible engine and gearbox is taken by fans of drifting, track and drag racing. Former owners tuned it, increasing power to 600, 700 and even 1,000 horsepower.
Keep in mind that with constant aggressive driving in the city, one of the engine cylinders may overheat, since the engine and turbine cooling system is not adapted to such loads. If you need more reliability and are planning severe tuning, look at the 2JZ. It has a larger volume, an improved cooling system and simply a record margin of safety.

Cost of Mark II in 110 body
Purchasing this car, even at one time, was quite a difficult task, since the Mark-2 110 was not officially supplied to the Russian market. The price of used cars today varies greatly. A car in poor condition can be purchased for 150-200 thousand rubles. But usually the owners of such rare and legendary Japanese cars take care of their cars, so the cost of a normal Mark-2 (110 body) starts from 400 thousand.
You can also find more expensive options, up to 1 million rubles or more. It all depends on the amount of money invested in the car by the previous owner. But even now, purchasing a Mark is a profitable investment. If you choose an option that is well equipped and in acceptable condition, the car will serve its new owner for a very long time. After all, the old Japanese are made to last and are ready to go for more than 20-25 years with minimal investment in repairs.
The Mark II is a much-loved car. For some, it is associated with drifting or street racing, for others - with comfort and business class. The beauty of the model is that it is universal. Toyota once created a legend whose authority still remains unshakable. Not only the ninth generation is popular, but also the three previous ones. Finding the first versions of the “Mark,” of course, is extremely difficult, but for true lovers of Japanese cars, the ninth generation is significant, because it marked the end of the era of the second “Mark.” The follower of the Mark X has no longer found such popular love and fame, although it is the same quality car.
Despite the cessation of serial production, the popularity of this car does not fall. It remains relevant to this day. This sedan is in demand not only in Japan, but also in Russia (in particular, its eastern regions). Toyota Mark-2 in 100 body is a true legend of JDM cars. The car is the successor of the “nineties” and was produced between 1996 and 2000. What is a Toyota Mark-2 in a 100 body? For characteristics and review, see our article today.
a legend that wins hearts:: SYL.ru
Produced between 1968 and 2004, the Mark II is one of the most popular JDM cars and one of Toyota's best creations. Over several decades, 9 generations of Mark 2 were released. Each subsequent series was improved and became better, both in terms of design and technical characteristics. Almost 15 years after the completion of production, the model remains in demand all over the world and in particular in Russia. Today we will explore the 7th generation Mark II. Meet the legend among JDM cars, the incredible “Mark 2” in the 90th body!
General information about the sedan
The model of this series was produced from 92 to 96. last century. This is a five-seater business sedan with a sporty bent: the car has a strict design, but with the use of body kits it quickly turns into a sports car and “rolls sideways” very well. According to many car enthusiasts, this car is the best option of all generations.
Starting with the X90 series, important design changes were made, which became the basis for future modifications of the car, which became the X100 and X110. This version retains the same engine size and transmission as the previous one. The main changes to the Mark 2 in the 90th body affected the safety, handling and comfort of the car. And not in vain - at one time this modification broke sales records on JDM.
The Mark II X90 was given the nickname "Samurai" in Russia, although subsequent generations are often called the same. This is a reliable and high-quality machine that boasts rich internal resources.
Characteristics of "Mark 2" in the 90 body
Mark II cars of the 7th generation were produced with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. Various types of engines were used (brand / power / number of cylinders / volume):
- 1G-FE: 135 l. s./ 6/ 2 liters;
- 4S-FE: 120 l. s./ 4/ 1.8 liters;
- 2JZ-GE: 220 l. s./ 6/ 3 liters;
- 1JZ-GE: 180 l. s./ 6/ 2.5 liters;
- 1JZ-GTE (turbo): 280 hp. s./ 6/ 2.5 liters;
- 2L-TE (diesel, turbo): 97 l. s./ 6/ 2.4 liters.
The most powerful of the presented engines – 1JZ-GTE – was installed on the sports modification “Mark 2” in the 90th body with rear-wheel drive, called Tourer V. Its production began in October 1993. By the way, Tourer V does not lose popularity; this car is most often found on the roads of large cities when compared with other versions and generations of Mark II.
As is typical for a real “Japanese”, the sedan is right-hand drive and equipped with an automatic transmission. The “native” transmission is quite durable and easily copes with engines up to 500 hp. pp., and it is also sensitive, quickly responding to the driver’s maneuvers.
External and technical tuning of the Mark 2 in the back of the 90 series
Here, car owners have the opportunity to experiment a lot and for a long time, introducing all sorts of innovations - if only they had the money, time and desire. The standard Mark equipment is unremarkable both inside and out. The interior of the cabin is ergonomic, and the exterior is quite simple.
However, just a few elements will turn this car into an eye-catching, stylish car. At JDM and many Russian markets you can find body kits, skirts, bumpers, spoilers, exhaust pipes and much more. Also, some owners of Toyota Mark 2 in the 90 body widen the wheel arches and install “shelves”. After these manipulations, the car takes on a completely different look.
The "stuffing" of the X90 also allows you to make various changes. Correct tuning will increase engine power several times. Thanks to the mechanics, this car has great technical potential, the main thing is to tune it wisely.
Car design
The appearance of this car has not changed radically. Toyota Mark 2 in the 100 body is the eighth generation of hardtop sedans. From the previous one, it inherited the same shape of optics, bumpers, and the entire body as a whole. One of the main features of the car is frameless doors. Another feature is the side lights on the edges of the wings. But they are not designed to allow oncoming drivers to distinguish this car at dusk (there is a separate lamp in the head optics for this). Thanks to this part, the driver can see the edges of the hood and confidently feel the dimensions of the car.
After all, Toyota’s “nose” is very long. This gives it both a monumental and sporty appearance. For those who want to stand out from the crowd, a plastic body kit is provided. On the Mark-2 in the 100 body, various door sills, the rear bumper, and also the front lip fit perfectly. This looks very impressive along with low-profile tires.
Thus, the Toyota Mark-2 in the 100 body easily turns from a business class sedan into a real sports car. The car has huge potential for tuning (not only external, but also technical).
The main differences in appearance affected the rear of the car. Thus, the Toyota Mark-2 in the 100 body received new, large rear lights. We all remember the wide stripe of the “nineties”, because of which he received the nickname “Samurai”. However, not everyone approved the new headlights on the Sotka. Many say that the 90th body was the best in terms of design. Be that as it may, the car still effectively stands out from the crowd even without tuning. “Mark-2” in the 100 body still attracts the attention of passers-by quite well.
Dimensions, ground clearance
The car even in black looks very massive. Thus, the total length of the body is 4.75 meters, width – 1.75 meters, and height – 1.39 meters. The ground clearance on standard 15-inch wheels and without body kits is 15.5 centimeters. If you do external tuning, the Mark-2 in the 90 body will become even lower. Due to the wide overlays on the bumper and sills, the ground clearance may even decrease to ten centimeters. Due to the long wheelbase and rear overhang, the car does not handle unpaved roads well. But in the city and on the highway, this car shows excellent dynamics and smoothness (if we don’t talk about versions with a deliberately “clamped” suspension).
Salon
Inside, Toyota greets us with the same velor interior with thick upholstery on the door panels and thick carpet underneath. The interior design is unified with the Cresta and Chayzer. There is still wood trim on the doors and center console. The architecture of the front panel is no different from the “nineties”. The instrument panel can be digital or analog. The steering wheel is four-spoke, without additional buttons. The center console houses an old cassette radio, a climate control unit, a cigarette lighter and a pair of air vents. On turbocharged versions, there may be “alarm clocks” above the instrument panel. Otherwise, the interior of the Toyota Mark-2 car in the 100 body is very boring. However, reviews have repeatedly noted its ergonomics. It's very comfortable to sit inside. The machine is suitable for both short and long distances.
By the way, only purified air comes inside. The cabin filter on the Mark-2 in the 100 body is installed already from the basic configuration. But? In order not to experience problems with the stove and air conditioner, it should be changed every 20 thousand kilometers.
One of the advantages of the Toyota Mark-2 car in the 100 body is its spacious interior. There is enough space both in front and behind. Up to five people can comfortably fit inside, including the driver. The seats have a good range of adjustments. True, on most versions they are mechanical. The trunk volume of the Mark is also decent - about 450 liters. But due to the large loading height, you have to lift things a lot when loading/unloading. However, you don’t have to open the trunk in this car very often.
Engine disadvantages and problems
The flimsiest system in this engine is the cylinder head of the 2L engine. It cracks when overheated. Therefore, to ensure that the cylinder head does not overheat, judging by the reviews of experienced car owners, the radiator and coolant must be checked every 10 thousand kilometers.
In case of overheating, the transfer plane or the 2L cylinder head gasket suffers. If these problems can be cured by a major overhaul, then cracks on the cylinder head cannot be cured by anything other than replacing the component.
Due to overheating, the engine turbine again fails. Since the supercharger does not like oil starvation, which occurs when driving a vehicle with elevated engine temperatures. If lubricant gets into the intake device, then the engine will require not just a major overhaul, but a contract or new one.

Also, many users complain about excessive fuel consumption. This is a common occurrence with turbocharged engines of those years. The unfinished electronics could not regulate the fuel supply with milliliter precision. By the way, due to problems with electronics, many car owners abandoned the 2L engine.
You need to watch the timing belt. If it breaks, the valves bend.
Cylinder scuffing also occurred. Simple sedans still coped with this problem and did not cause trouble to car owners. But on Land Cruisers, Highs and other SUVs, overheating and scuffing became critical for 2L units.
If anyone is thinking about tuning these devices, then they should not do it. Since increasing the power will not bear fruit, but will only increase the already severe overheating of the 2L engine. If someone wants to tune the engine, this can be done by milling the cylinder head. But it will be possible to increase the power by only three horses.
"Toyota Mark-2" in 100 body: technical characteristics
With the release of the eighth generation, the range of engines has expanded significantly. Thus, the base for Toyota was the 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine 4S-FE. But due to weak dynamic characteristics (maximum power of only 130 horsepower), this engine was extremely illiquid on the market. The engine compartment of the Toyota Mark 2 with such an engine was practically empty. After all, the body was designed to accommodate much larger and more powerful engines.
Next on the list is the 1G-FE inline six-cylinder engine. This engine had a larger displacement. But in terms of power it is not far from the previous unit - only 140 horsepower.
Also in the lineup was a two-liter 1G-FE unit with a VVT-i system. Thanks to the shift in valve timing, engineers were able to achieve a power of 160 horsepower while maintaining the volume of the combustion chamber.
JZ Series
These are perhaps the most popular engines from Japan. Just like previous generations, the Mark-2 in the 100th body was equipped with gasoline engines of the Jay-Z series. The basic one was 1JZ-GE. This is an in-line, six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with a VVT-i system. But despite the absence of a turbine, this engine already produced good performance in stock. With a volume of 2.5 liters, it developed 200 horsepower. And this is far from the limit.
We will also look at the turbocharged version of this engine. In the meantime, let's move on to the second generation of J-Zs. It is the 2JZ-GE engine. This engine with a volume of 3 liters develops a power of 220 horsepower. Just like the previous one, it is not equipped with a turbine. At the same time, it is distinguished by high reliability and good performance characteristics (consumption in the city with an automatic transmission is no higher than 15 liters).
Design
It is worth noting that sedans of the “Mark” series have been produced since the late 60s. Our body represents the seventh generation of sedans. The car has a very modern and pleasant appearance.
At the front, the car has slanted headlights and a wide radiator grille. The bumper has a huge cutout for air intake. This is not surprising, because many people buy a Mark-2 in a 90 body for tuning and equip it with a turbine. Such charged cars can be distinguished externally by the intercooler, which is located behind the lower part of the bumper.
This “samurai” has wide potential not only for technical, but also for external tuning. Almost any body kit can be installed on the 90 body. "Mark-2" (90 body) will look very sporty and dynamic with it. Although even in stock the car looks very good.
Why did the Mark-2 (90 body) receive the nickname “samurai”? This is because of its taillights, which are a wide thin strip. Outwardly, it resembles a samurai sword. Even now, more than twenty years later, the layout of the lanterns looks very attractive and unusual.
By the way, most versions of the Markov had small marker lamps on the front of the wings. This “trick” could also be seen on the “Cross” and “Sprinter”. Marker lamps on the front of the fenders are not new to Japanese JDM cars. They allow the driver to orient the edges of the body at night. This is a very useful feature, or so the reviews say.
"Samurai", like all its predecessors, was produced only in a hardtop body. It features high aerodynamics and a long rear overhang.
Tourer S
For those who didn’t want to bother with tuning, the Japanese released a ready-made, loaded version. In common people these cars received the nickname “Turik”. This modification was equipped with a turbocharged 1JZ-GTE engine.
With a volume of 2.5 liters, this monster produced an incredible 280 horsepower and 383 Nm of torque. It is worth noting that the torque is “spread” across the entire range and is available from 2.5 thousand revolutions. This gives good dynamics and elasticity of travel. This copy accelerated to hundreds in just over 6 seconds. As reviews note, this is far from the limit. Some craftsmen “inflated” this engine to 400 horsepower.
6th generation
These cars were published from 1988 to the very end of 1995. There were two different body styles - hardtop and sedan. And their difference was that the hardtops did not have frames on the door glass. Plus, differences were visible in the optics and in the radiator grille. From 1992 to 1995, only sedans were released. And by the way, new engines have appeared. They were equipped with rear-wheel drive versions with automatic and manual transmissions.
There were a lot of units. The 6-cylinder 1JZ-GTE was considered the most powerful. Its volume was 2.5 liters, and the number of “horses” produced was 280. Plus, the unit had a turbocharger. The weakest were 2L and 2L-T. Both of them were diesel and of the same volume (4 cylinders). The first of these produced 85 hp, and the second - 97 hp. The 2L-T featured turbocharging.
There were also versions for 115, 135, 150, 170, 180 and 200 horsepower. By the way, the last engine of those listed had the largest volume - three liters, to be more precise. It was known as 7M-GE.
Chassis
The engineers took the previous generation of the Mark as a platform. Therefore, the suspension scheme of the “hundredth” is almost identical to the “nineties”. So, at the front there is a double wishbone design with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. The rear uses a multi-link. As reviews note, the suspension is very energy-intensive. On standard, high-profile tires, bumps are practically not felt. But in corners such a car is very rolly. Therefore, for those who want better handling, there is the TEMS adjustable suspension. In stock it was installed on the Tourer S version and had several levels of shock absorber stiffness. The suspension also featured reinforced brakes with a larger diameter and upgraded calipers.
As an option, a limited-slip differential was installed on the Toyota Mark-2 in the 100 body. There were also all-wheel drive modifications.
