Toyota Rav4 (Rav4) owner reviews

"Toyota - Drive your dreams"

Good day to all, dear users of this wonderful Internet resource - Drom.ru. This is not the first time I’m writing a review here, in order to help readers decide on the choice of car and the current owners of this car, or just those who are simply curious, to tell all the intricacies of owning a car, describe the pros and cons, some comments or suggestions, or just share your thoughts.

Briefly about myself: I am 23 years old, seemingly young, height 183 cm, weight 75 kg, single, have a girlfriend. I work, have an average salary, not poor, but not rich either, in general, a real middle class, for which value for money is more important than extra show-off.

During my 6 years of experience, I haven’t driven many cars, but quite different ones: starting from old German Volkswagen Golf, Mercedes Benz E-shka 94, Toyota Rav4 2012, Mitsubishi Pajero 2007 and 2012, Audi A6 and Nissan Almera Classic. I drove the latter for almost 4 years without a break, now I have given it to my grandfather.

About our climate: the capital of Kazakhstan is Astana. I've been living here for 5 years. The climate is truly mid-continental - in summer the heat reaches 35-40 degrees, and in winter the maximum in my experience was -50 degrees. Winter is 6 months a year, summer is 1 month, the rest is autumn/spring. In general, these people, Astana residents, are harsh - they smile little, they always walk with a gloomy face (how can you smile when the wind blows in your face at a speed of 20-30 km/h, your cheeks puff out if you smile :-D), and cars have a hard time ( this is where you need to arrange a test drive for car concerns)

In general, when you have already built a kind of portrait of my personality in your head, you can move directly to the car. And we are talking about Toyota RAV4, 4th generation, pre-restyling, American, 2.5 liter engine, 6-speed real automatic, “drum” equipment (velor interior, lack of many functions, lack of electric seat adjustments, BUT there is a multimedia touch display with a good diagonal. How is it possible, with a 2.5 engine, AWD and a touch display? No idea, maybe it’s a feature of the American configuration...

The first time I saw the first photo of the 4th generation on the Internet, I thought to myself, “God, what a freak he is!” (Honestly, I say this about every generation of Toyota, that no generation kills me morally, and you think - “But the old generation was so beautiful, how could they ruin it like that!”, But years pass and you no longer notice already his ugliness, but on the contrary, you sympathize. And when the new generation of Toyota comes, you think - “God, how scary he is, because the last generation was so beautiful!” :-D. By God, it’s like a vicious circle of perception of the Toyota generation - “Ugly - handsome-ugly-handsome.”

In general, 4 years later, after the release of the 4th generation RAV4, I already somehow sympathize with this car, I really like it. Its aggressive front end, massive rear part, powerful arches, which are covered with plastic linings, which make it even more massive and, as one might put it, “off-road” or something... I really liked the interior from the very beginning of the release of this generation. What did the Japanese call this work - “The Floating Console”? In general, the console, divided into 2 sections - upper and lower, gives some kind of unique charm and zest to this car.

But let's continue about the exterior. The lower parts of the bumpers and sills are made of unpainted plastic, which is not dangerous to get caught on a large hole in rough terrain (or on a very high curb). I immediately remember the previous RAV4 3rd generation, restyling. The face is similar to a Camry 40, a bumper without an overhang and... the first high curb and painting of this bumper. In this regard, the Japanese from Toyota took this problem into account in the city “Jeep” and made an excellent overhang with a good bevel for off-road use and unpainted plastic. Rationalism triumphs in me! Although... in my opinion this is not the case in all Rafiks. My RAV4 comes from a country of increased democracy and high wages and tolerance, and you guessed it - America. Having looked at the review of European Rafiks, the lower lip is decorated with some kind of plastic chrome trim and eats up the entire overhang. Rationalism is fiercely indignant.

If we compare the third generation and the fourth, which I will do throughout my review, then the differences are very large.

The first is a car database. Remembering my first Rafik, it was a typical C-class car, an all-terrain station wagon, and its attendant pros and cons, namely its size. The latest generation base is almost 10 cm larger than its predecessor! The length is 20 cm, the width is 3 cm. For a minute, this means that it is spacious inside just like in the Camry business vehicle! When Rafik belonged to my uncle, I sat behind him, and it was so spacious that I could cross my legs, and my uncle is almost 80 meters tall. And for me, the comfort of the rear passengers is as important as the front ones. The front is also spacious, especially in width. The girl even complains that now, out of habit, she cannot grab my hand, as she used to do on the Nissan Almera Classic, it’s just stupidly lacking and it’s uncomfortable if she reaches it :-D.

The second is noise insulation and smoothness. Oh, I remember how I swore when I drove over a speed bump on the third generation. My ass was jumping like a grasshopper and with a characteristic sound, as if I was driving a UAZ, and not a “Drive Your Dream” car. Honestly, I didn’t even smell the slightest bit of a dream, rather the viscous smell of despondency and misunderstanding, remembering how much money they paid for this dream and how it didn’t justify that money with comfort... In the case of the last generation, I no longer just smell the smell, but feel a whole harmony of smells and aromas... wait, again my uncle bought a stinky scent of France and put it in the glove compartment... In short, she has complete order with comfort and sound insulation, I’m not even complaining, although it would be nice to have additional sound insulation in the area of the rear arches, but as they say - good little by little.

The third is the perception of this car. Everyone knows the difference between a Camry and a Korola. Let’s take the same average guy (or girl, after all, this is the age of tolerance), put him in a Camry and a Korola, and everyone understands perfectly well which car is easier to pick up a cool chick from some club (All sorts of Bugattis, Land Rovers and other premium cars don’t count; you can pick up a cool chick with a crooked face and a hundred pounds). So in society, the great Russian proverb applies: “They meet you by their clothes, but they see you off by their minds.” And here in Qazaqstan, among the Kazakhs, this is almost an unwritten law. And for people to greet you based on your clothes, at a minimum you must arrive in a Toyota. After all, “Toyota is a signal of prosperity and wealth!” And it doesn’t matter that you live in a friend’s closet and eat Doshirak for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but you’re on Toyota, which means you’re successful! In general, after driving a Nissan for 4 years, he was inconspicuous and ordinary to those around him; after switching to a Rav4, he unexpectedly became respected and status-worthy among his colleagues, a lot of “bros” appeared, and for the girls he became handsome and had a good sense of humor. In general, Toyota is an indicator of your wealth. Korola - will do, Camry - is on its way to success, RAV4 - mmm, nothing like that, Pradik/200th - authoritative and most respected, 570 Lexus - God. I hope my heart rate from such a change in the status of society will not reach the sky, although, knowing my beloved, she will quickly give me a kick in the ass if she notices that I am a little “starstruck” :-D

The fourth is the interior. How I get high when I sit inside the new Rav4. A soft armrest, soft maps in the doors, a convenient and intuitive location of buttons, a huge range of seat adjustments in 6 directions (adjusted as much as possible up and back, the seat is slightly tilted from 90 degrees, the most ideal, off-road landing, I sit high, I look far), oh my God ! bluetooth appeared in the tape recorder, goodbye to the damned aux wire and piles of wires, a separate usb input, two cigarette lighters, a huge armrest and a glove compartment, where you don’t have to slightly crumple an A4 sheet so that it fits inside, finally a mirror appeared in the visors of me and the front one passenger! (How annoying it was when representatives of the opposite sex, as well as my sunshine, touched the rearview mirror to apply makeup! The girl was most happy :-D), a separate place for a smartphone at the bottom of the dashboard, two huge cup holders in the center, where the lever gearboxes (you can fit a liter bottle in this cup holder, cup holders in the doors, including those for the rear passengers).

The rear sofa not only moves back and forth, but is also adjustable in terms of tilt, and even to decent (or indecent;-) ) angles. To tell the truth, I don’t remember whether there was a tilt angle in the previous body, since I rarely used it.

The only thing that bothers me is the location of the Eco and Sport buttons at the bottom, it is inconvenient and dangerous to use while driving, although the Japanese, far from my mind, conceived that such buttons should be used before starting to move, and not vice versa, but I did not reach them level of development. Well, or the auto window mode is only on the driver's side. Saving on matches. This is annoying, but you can put up with it, since this is already nit-picking... although the cost of the car is far from cheap so you can just put up with it and forget about it. Well, okay, this is on the conscience of Japanese marketers. In general, everything is in order with ergonomics, everything is in its place, there is plenty of space, everything is convenient, even in my “drum edition” configuration.

Many readers can say that changing from a budget car (Nissan Almera Classic) to a more prestigious one and a higher class will be so wonderful, rosy and convenient. In fact, they are right, I don’t argue with that, but today I went to different car dealerships to compare the RAV4 with classmates such as the Nissan X-Trail, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe... Well, they didn’t hook me. Yes, they are beautiful, and somehow more ergonomic, but there is something, it seems like they saved on something... Somewhere the plastic is so unpleasant to touch and look at, somewhere the location of the keys is a little incomprehensible, somewhere the ergonomics of the seats are uncomfortable, a bunch The engine and transmission are not so hot, the suspension is not the same... Opinions are made up of little things, but if you take a car more expensive than $30,000 from scratch, then it’s impossible to turn a blind eye to such little things. Over time, you begin to hate them, and in the future there are two ways - either you become zen and resign yourself, putting up with these shortcomings, or you freak out and start throwing it off to the next buyer, losing almost 25% of the value of the car immediately after leaving the dealership + loss of value due to ownership costs and vehicle year. And of these cars, the RAV4 irritates me the least, because the pros outweigh the cons.

I will publish further information about the car in the supplements, where I will dwell in detail on the engine, transmission, their combination, the energy consumption of the suspension and further operation.

No nail or rod for everyone. S/u Marat N.K.

I doubt that I am managing a dream. Owner review

07.07.2018

There is no need to idealize Toyota: the car as a whole is not bad, but it doesn’t particularly stand out compared to other manufacturers.

I have been the owner of a fourth-generation Toyota RAV4 for just over four years, during which I have covered almost 150 thousand kilometers on Russian roads. Naturally, during this time I have accumulated certain impressions on the operation of this car, which I want to share.

So, I'll start with the body, or rather its color. The manufacturer used excellent metal, which, even after our winters with salt, successfully resists rust, but the quality of the paint is still poor: scratches and noticeable chips appear instantly. Any small pebble or chip is ready.

I managed to change the windshield three times, due to the deterioration of its condition due to the impact of stones and sand flying from the road. I changed it almost like a consumable: every 50 thousand, it just became cloudy. Previously, in my ten, the antifreeze ran and the glass sweated, here too, only from the influence of all sorts of rubbish from the road. The most interesting thing is that the condition of the headlights has practically not deteriorated.

The interior has quite hard plastic, but even now there are no extraneous sounds or squeaks. There is a complaint about the artificial leather insert - scratches appear on it. During prolonged operation (10 hours or more), the radio gets hot and begins to freeze. Although it could be because of something else.

I still didn’t have time to get used to the stiff suspension; the handling was 4-minus. The engine works strangely in combination with the automatic transmission: it slows down terribly, and in order to overtake on the highway and achieve normal acceleration, you need to press the gas pedal for almost 10 seconds. The sport mode gives practically no advantages, it just increases the speed and it screams. In fact, the engine pulls well, but the automatic transmission does not allow it to fully open.

In summer, the car consumes a little more than 7 liters per hundred outside the city; in the city, if you move at a “retirement” pace, the consumption is about a liter higher. In winter, consumption is about 9.5 liters.

In addition to consumables, over the entire run, the rear silent blocks of the longitudinal and lower arms, as well as the rear crosspiece for 5 thousand non-original (by the way, will soon have to change the front one) were changed. So, how reliable the RAV 4 is is somewhat controversial.

Powertrain of the updated RAV4

The fifth generation of the crossover is equipped with gasoline and hybrid engines. There is no hybrid model on the Russian market. Automakers did not provide a diesel RAV 4 2021, which upset fans of this version, judging by reviews online.

Cars produced in Russia are equipped with two types of engines. The two-liter engine has a power of 149 l/s, the 2.5-liter unit has 199. The developers have applied innovations and improvements: the engines have become more powerful and more economical. Fuel consumption is less, but, according to real owners, in mixed mode the same figures remain - 10 liters per 100 km.

The fifth generation RAF 4 is equipped with three types of transmissions:

  • Mechanical - on models with front-wheel drive, with an engine capacity of 2 liters.
  • CVT – for both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models with a 2-liter engine.
  • 8-speed automatic transmission - installed on all-wheel drive versions with a 2.5 liter engine.

Both types of engines run on 92 gasoline. Fuel tank – 55 liters: the volume remains the same.
