Timely replacement of the oil in the gearbox, as shown in Figure No. 1, will extend the operating period of the unit and prevent its premature failure. Today we will look at issues related to replacing transmission fluid on a Toyota car.
Automatic transmission Toyota
We will find out how to partially and completely oil in a Toyota automatic transmission, and decide on the timing. We will pay attention to the choice of technical fluid and answer questions about the possibility of using analogues. We will also present instructions on how to change the automatic transmission oil in a Toyota car step by step.
Oil selection
At the manufacturing plant, gearboxes are filled with oil that meets the JWS3309 and Type T-IV (or T4) approval. To change technical oil, it is necessary to select a technical fluid with the specified parameters. Figure No. 2 shows the original oil from the manufacturer, which is intended for the retail chain. Packaging: Manual transmission oil for Toyota automatic transmission is offered in plastic canisters with a capacity of 0.946 liters. The product can be supplied in 4 liter tin cans.

How often should you change ATF?
Novice motorists are confident that transmission oil is poured into a Toyota automatic transmission for the entire period of operation. Indeed, some manufacturers write this way. Toyota indicates a more specific figure - 160 thousand km. However, our transmission lubricant needs to be changed more often - every 30-40 thousand kilometers. Otherwise, the device will not work on Russian roads for long. Service books take into account ideal road and temperature conditions.
Frequent oil changes in the gearbox are a consequence of the following phenomena:
- urban operating conditions - traffic jams, start-stop driving, frequent gear changes;
- poor road surface - primer, gravel, snow, ice;
- regularly towing a trailer;
- high ambient temperature, which causes the automatic transmission to overheat;
- heavy load on the car - heavy load, many passengers.
Change intervals and volume check
Changing the Toyota automatic transmission oil depends on 2 factors:
- Lubricant heating temperatures.
- The climatic conditions in which the vehicle is operated.
The question arises: how often should I change the transmission fluid? If you operate the car exclusively at optimal t0, then the oil in the Toyota automatic transmission is changed once every 160 thousand kilometers. Manufacturers advise changing the oil once every 40-60 thousand kilometers. With minus t0, as well as frequent use of the car on country roads and an aggressive driving style, the time required to change the transmission fluid is reduced by approximately half.
What kind of oil to fill in the automatic transmission of a 1992 Toyota Carina
From 1992 to 1994, Toyota produced the sixth generation of the Karina series under the T190 symbol, which was equipped with the Aisin A240 4-mortar described above. Accordingly, analyzing the above information, we can come to the conclusion that oil with ATF Type T-IV approval is also poured into it. It only remains to mention once again the original Toyota ATF Type T-IV transmission fluid, recommended by this automaker, and add a few more of its analogues using the example of SHELL SPIRAX S5 ATF X and Lukoil Atf Synth Asia.

Partial simplified and complete lubricant change
There are three types of product change:
- Partial replacement.
- Complete replacement.
- Oil change with pan removal.
Let's look at each of the above types.
Toyota oil filling
Partial replacement.
This is the simplest method in which there is no need to install a new oil filter. The used transmission fluid is drained from the gearbox oil pan through the drain hole. To drain, unscrew the screw plug. Fresh product is poured through the dipstick hole, as shown in Figure No. 3.
On a note.
Lubricants must be filled following the manufacturer's recommendations. It is not recommended to mix oils with different tolerances.
When replacing a product using the simplified procedure, the power unit is not flushed. This method has one drawback: almost 50% of the old car oil remains on the transmission parts.
Complete replacement.
The full procedure is somewhat more complicated. It is recommended to carry it out at service centers. The essence of the replacement: new lubricant is supplied under pressure, displacing the used product. This will require 12 liters of ATF. Algorithm of actions: through the radiator of the box, tubes of a special apparatus are connected to the “automatic machine”, the power unit is started. The used product is drained and a new one is poured in. In this case, you can independently control the color of ATF.
Thus, deception is eliminated. The customer independently controls the process and the color of the poured technical fluid.
Note!
The service center provides a guarantee for the work. However, service station specialists do not guarantee stable operation of the transmission.
They justify their refusal by the fact that when the fluid is completely replaced, the “useful deposits” are almost completely washed out. In this case, no one is protected from automatic transmission failure.
Changing the lubricant by removing the pan.
This is the most optimal option, especially for changing oil in Toyota Camry and Corolla with any mileage. A complete replacement of transmission fluid is performed by removing the pan. This makes it possible to install a new oil filter. The procedure involves washing the inside of the pan and freeing it from wear particles and dirt.
Oil for automatic Toyota Carina A240 (4 gears)
The Aisin A240 series of 4-speed automatic transmissions dates back to 1985. Accordingly, it was equipped with Toyota Carina models from the third to the seventh generation. At the same time, as the operating instructions for these vehicles state, this machine must be filled with oil with an ATF Type T-IV approval. Toyota recommends purchasing transmission fluid of its own production, Toyota ATF Type T-IV. However, it is worth understanding that other products also have this specification. For example, Kixx ATF Multi or Rosneft Kinetic ATF Type T-IV.

Step-by-step instructions for changing the oil
Let's look at the question of how to properly change the oil in a Toyota. To carry out the procedure correctly, there is a certain algorithm of actions. Before changing the transmission fluid, you need to start the car, warm up the engine to operating temperature, placing the car on a viewing hole or a lift.
Then, remove the drain plug and drain the waste product from the pan. When some of the liquid comes out, you will need to slightly loosen the bolts holding the pan. There are only 19 by 10 mm. Next, unscrew 17 bolts, leaving 2 pieces located oppositely.
We insert a wooden wedge into the gap formed between the crankcase and the pan, and disconnect the parts.
Important!
During the procedure, pay special attention to the sealing gasket of the pan. We try not to damage it.
We unscrew the remaining 2 bots and remove the pallet, pointing it to the side. This will make it possible to release it as quickly and completely as possible.
We dismantle the magnetic cover of the differential box and drain the lubricant. Carefully wash the pan and all plugs using gasoline. Particular attention must be paid to the magnets that catch chips. They are located on the pallet body. We unscrew 3 bolts with a diameter of 10 mm that hold the filter and change the device.
We perform the assembly in reverse order: the pallet is mounted back. To tighten tightly, the bolts are twisted crosswise. New product is poured through the dipstick hole. Up to 3.5 liters of oil is required. Be sure to check that there are no leaks through the sealing gasket and plug. The procedure for a Toyota automatic transmission is performed with the vehicle stationary. The process must be completed three times.
We start the power unit again to warm up the box. After which, we move the gear selector to all positions. Each one should take 10-20 seconds.
So, step by step, you can independently change the old oil to a new one. How to check the transmission fluid level in a Toyota automatic transmission: more on that below.
Boxes for Toyota Camry
Samples of cars of this model were equipped with different automatic transmissions - 4, 5 and 6 stages, depending on the year of manufacture, body type and power unit power. Boxes from Aisin are distinguished by unpretentiousness to operating conditions, a long “life” and good reliability of the elements, subject to timely and correct maintenance.
Important: there are models with a CVT, mostly Japanese-made cars of the 8th and 9th generation Camry.
For example: since 2009, Camrys with 3.5-liter engines have used an Aisin U660E 6-speed gearbox. This box is also found in Lexus LS cars. Complete with weaker 2.5 liter engines. often comes automatic U760E.

Verification procedure
Checking the oil level in a Toyota automatic transmission is performed after placing the car on a flat surface. The poured liquid should correspond to o as shown in the figure.
Photo: checking the level using a dipstick rod on which control marks are applied. You cannot fill in more quantities “in reserve”, or less than the required volume. If underfilling is detected, we add it to the control mark. You need to check the level regularly.
How much oil is in a Toyota Carina automatic transmission?
How many liters should I fill?
The automatic 4-speed transmission of the A240 Toyota Carina holds 7.3 liters of transmission fluid. But you should understand that when carrying out a complete oil change in this machine, you will need much more transmission fluid. After all, this method involves passing fresh oil through the machine in order to eliminate waste residues. But a piece will cost several times cheaper. After all, to implement it it will be enough to purchase 3-4 liters of appropriate transmission fluid
Changing the oil in an automatic transmission Toyota Carina
When you already know what kind of oil you will fill in the Toyota Carina automatic transmission, it is worth thinking about the procedure for replacing it. At the same time, you should understand that you can only carry out a partial oil change in this machine yourself, which is performed as follows:
- remove the motor protection from below
- unscrew the drain plug
- pour waste into containers
- dismantle the automatic transmission pan
- change consumables
- fill the purchased oil according to the level
Necessary components for work
To replace the transmission, it is not oil that is used, but a special composition intended specifically for this unit. The container label for this liquid bears the designation ATF (automatic transmission fuid). This liquid is able to function under more difficult conditions, withstanding significant loads. When the gearbox is operating, the operating temperature of the parts reaches 300-400*C.
The torque converter experiences heavy loads: when the car is moving, the temperature of the systems reaches 150*C.
During long-term operation of the gearbox, volatile components evaporate from the solution used for lubrication and cooling, and the composition of the transmission fluid changes, which is unacceptable.
The fluid poured into the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission performs a dual function:
- heat removal from the box parts to the external environment;
- lubrication of contacting parts.
To stabilize the solution at high temperatures and stabilize ongoing processes while preventing oxidation, special additives are added that prevent wear of parts and allow mechanisms to function normally at temperatures from -40* to +150*C.
During long-term operation of the gearbox, volatile components evaporate from the fluid used for lubrication and cooling, and the composition of the transmission fluid changes, which is unacceptable for the normal operation of the mechanisms.

The type of fluid used for each vehicle's transmission is indicated in the factory documents. The most commonly used type of transmission fluid is DEXRON (modifications I, II, III).
When completely replacing the fluid, it is imperative to determine the labeling of all the necessary components that may be needed for replacement: oil filter, O-rings and gaskets.
Typically, synthetic solutions used for transmission are 2-3 times more expensive than mineral solutions.
It must be taken into account that fluids are poured through the level measurement hole in the gearbox, and in some brands of cars using a control plug in the automatic transmission box.
What will you need for replacement?
A set of necessary parts and tools:
- working fluid (volume depends on the replacement method and type of gearbox);
- cardboard pan gasket (selected according to the automatic transmission model);
- new filter (design and part number depend on the modification of the unit);
- rubber ring of the filter element (supplied in the set or purchased separately);
- a sealing washer for the drain plug and a funnel with an extension tube (required in case of partial replacement);
- liquid for removing contaminants from pallet surfaces;
- clean rags;
- container for collecting spent solution (volume depends on the automatic transmission model);
- torque wrench with a set of interchangeable sockets for hex nuts and bolts.
