Fuel consumption
The 2ZZ-GE engine marking indicates that this is a gasoline unit; fuel consumption can be imagined using the example of a Toyota Celica with a 6-speed manual transmission. In the city, the engine burns 10.2 liters per hundred, on the highway it uses 7.4 liters .
Toyota Corolla E120 with 6 manual transmission
Other indicators of gasoline consumption for the Toyota Corolla E120 with a 6-speed manual transmission are 11.1/6.7/8.3 (city/highway/combined cycle).
Engine technical parameters
In the early 2000s, the world's automobile concerns entered another wave of a kind of arms race. The engines had less and less useful volume, used a small amount of fuel, but at the same time produced enviable power.
The main technical characteristics of the 2ZZ-GE engine, which was traditionally developed with the participation of specialists from Yamaha, are as follows:
Working volume | 1.8 liters (1796 cc) |
Power | 164-240 hp |
Compression ratio | 11.5:1 |
Gas distribution system | VVTL-i |
Timing chain drive | |
Light alloy material of the piston group, based on aluminum | |
Cylinder diameter | 82 mm |
Piston stroke | 85 mm |
The engine received undoubted advantages for operation in the USA and Japan, where the quality of lubricants and fuel was already quite high at that time. In Russia, the 2ZZ-GE internal combustion engine received controversial reviews from car owners.
Technical features
The Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine is built on the basis of an aluminum cylinder block , cast iron liners and fused into the block. A light-alloy internal combustion engine is lighter than its counterparts with the same volume. The cylinder diameter is 82 mm , and the piston stroke is 3 mm longer. Therefore, the 2ZZ-GE engine can only be called long-stroke when compared with the 1ZZ internal combustion engine.
Aluminum cylinder block 2ZZ-GE
Traction at low speeds is worse, but remaining high piston speed worsens oil removal and increases demands on the rings. When creating a compact engine, the developers reduced the diameter and length of the crankshaft journals. As a result, the load increased and the resource of the internal combustion engine decreased .
Smaller T-shaped piston skirts run hotter and start knocking sooner. a major overhaul of the 2ZZ engine, although there are options for “re-lining” with non-original spare parts. The liners, despite their size suitable for repair, have the same problems.
Cylinder head 2ZZ-GE
In general, the 1.8 engine is considered “disposable”, and this is a typical picture for the series.
In some cases, the chain can stretch even before the resource of the 2ZZ-GE internal combustion engine is exhausted. When replacing an old part with a new one, it doesn’t hurt to update other drive elements, but the camshaft sprocket responsible for the intake is assembled with the variable-phase system drive, so it is often left behind. As a result , replacing the timing chain gives a temporary effect .

Main disadvantages and advantages of the unit
2ZZ-GE under the hood of the Toyota Matrix The Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine has quite a lot of potential - about 500,000 kilometers. But its actual service life largely depends on the quality of the oil and gasoline.
The motor is too sensitive to second-rate materials. The advantage for many drivers was the high engine speed threshold. But this also made the unit not very torquey at low speeds - you have to rev the engine hard to achieve good dynamics. And this despite the fact that the unit uses the Turbo system.
The main disadvantages are summarized as follows:
- too high sensitivity to low-quality fuel and oil;
- lack of possibility of major repairs due to the characteristics of the piston group;
- It is not uncommon for the VVTL-I system, which controls the valves, to break down;
- increased oil consumption, sticking of piston rings are problems with almost every unit in this series.
Many owners of cars with this engine have tuned some systems in order to achieve higher power levels and reduce the rev threshold to achieve rated performance. But this also leads to increased wear of engine parts.
The scope of use of the unit is as follows:

Service
According to the maintenance regulations, the 2ZZ engine requires an oil and oil filter change after passing the 10,000 km mark. factory lubricant “ENGINE OIL 5W-40” is found in the catalog under number 0888080376 (this is a liter bottle). A five-liter canister can be found under article number 0888080375 . The oil filter for the 2ZZ-GE engine comes with catalog number 90915-10003 . During the first maintenance, the cabin filter ( 87139-30040 ) is also changed.

When the car has driven 40,000 km, it is necessary to replace the air filter ( 1780121050 ). During the fourth maintenance, the spark plugs are also changed.
The time to replace 2ZZ antifreeze comes after an impressive mileage (according to the factory recommendation, this is 180 thousand). Toyota Super Long Life coolant (a five-liter canister goes under article number 88980072 ). Replacing the 2ZZ-GE timing chain is not provided, although if it stretches, it is better to update the part. A chain with part number 1350622030 .

Disadvantages and weaknesses of 4ZZ
The gasoline 1.8 2ZZ-GE, like other engines in the series, demonstrates a total problem - excessive oil consumption due to waste.
The reason is in the design features of the internal combustion engine itself, so there is no risk of incorrect operation. The engine is designed in such a way that the oil scraper rings can become stuck during the warranty period. The attempt to overhaul the engine and replace the rings with new modifications did not solve the problem. Only the 2005 update improved the situation slightly.
Pistons 2ZZ-GE
The upgraded pistons were coated with an anti-friction coating , which the pioneers did not have. The lubrication volume of the 2zz-GE engine has also increased, which is noticeable on the oil dipstick with moved marks. The first pistons had four drainage grooves (small), the latest versions were already equipped with eight large ones.
In addition to excessive oil consumption, another problem made itself known at the very beginning. We are talking about a knocking sound in the engine caused by crankshaft play in the longitudinal direction. The VVT drive making a cracking noise is not such a typical negative (in comparison with other series). Although when replacing the timing chain, it makes sense to install a new VVT-I. The weak point is the chain itself, which sometimes stretches even before the resource is exhausted.
Crankshaft 2ZZ-GE
All these troubles reveal a significant shortcoming of the concern regarding the ZZ series engines.
This is not a question, this is a story))) Partially based on materials from a special, although sometimes very useful, “car tuning” magazine
If you have a 1ZZ (“Izzy”) under the hood, then you are the owner of a surprisingly fast and responsive car, but it still falls short of a real hot hatchback.
It seems that the most logical and correct would be to swap the engine for 2ZZ, although in the current market situation it is even easier to swap a car for Allex/Ranx with 2ZZ, since in the kit you will also receive spacers, seats with improved lateral support and rear disc brakes.
But the simplest option is not always the most successful. It would seem that the 2zz (“Duzzi”) is better assembled, 60 l/s more powerful, equipped with a more advanced VVTL-i system, which regulates not only the opening time of the valves but also the height of their lifting (by switching to a different diameter of the cams on the crankshaft), 2zz spins not up to 6000 but up to 8400 rpm...
But there are also disadvantages. all the nonsense of the Yamaha engine wakes up in the range of 6000 - 8400 rpm, maximum power - at 7600 rpm, and, most importantly, maximum torque of 18.4 N * m - at 6800 rpm...
And 6.5 seconds to a hundred with a manual transmission only works if you don’t “fall out” of this range during acceleration, otherwise the car will turn sour. And the same Golf 4 1.8 turbo, not even in the GTI configuration, already knocks down two thousand. Therefore, by switching correctly to 2zz, you can tear up a lot of people in a quarter or on the highway, but on winding roads where you have to brake/accelerate often, the Duzzi will melt.
As you know, everyone competes in terms of power and momentum wins. The force that turns the wheels. Izzy produces maximum torque from 4200 rpm. and only 1 Nm less - 17.3 This is due to the fact that the diameter of the 2ZZ cylinder is 82 millimeters, and the height (piston stroke) is 85 mm - it is torsional, tuned for high power. The cylinders of the 1ZZ are taller and thinner - 79 mm in diameter and 92 mm in height. That is, the 1zz engine, which is weaker in terms of horsepower and has a longer stroke, wins in terms of low-end traction and at least does not lose in terms of acceleration in many situations.
These are not all numbers taken from the car, but real observations - even many who traveled with me said with surprise that the car from a standstill was never worse than the Z version of the Runx, and almost better.
Therefore, if you want to make the car faster, then modify the 1zz, and not do a swap. and if you do a swap, then for a more advanced modification 1zz-fed The choice of components for this is not so poor, although less than that of the Yamaha counterpart. Everything here will depend on my budget.
First, given that the Izzy's cylinder bores are wider than the Duzzy's, you can buy Darton liners for $380 and bore the cylinders to 82mm. I didn’t calculate how much volume it would be, something like 2 liters.
https://www.mazworx.com/product/engine/toyota/1zz/sleeves/darton/toyota-1zz-dry-darton-sleeves
everything or almost everything else for a bored block (pistons, head gasket, rings, injectors, crankshaft, etc.) can be picked up at the Monkey wrench store
https://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/
And then there will only be two problems left - how to order and deliver all this to our village of Dalnie Ebenya, and how to select a normal control program for this. The budget for such a machine will be cosmic, and with the installation of a compressor it will be even more expensive, 300 thousand (count 80% cost of the car)…
It is clear that there is a whole legion of people whose opinion is “if your interior lights are green and you want red ones, sell the car and buy another one with red lights.” Read, if you want it to go faster, don’t have sex with your brains, buy one that will make you go faster right away. These unfortunate and wretched people don’t understand that I want exactly this car, but with mother-of-pearl buttons. And even despite the fact that such a car will drive slower than an evolution bought for the same money, it will be built by me, familiar to the last screw and tailored to me, and this is worth any means...
Tuning
Atmospheric tuning of 2ZZ-GE involves porting the head, installing lightweight valves, a 4-2-1 exhaust modification, 440cc injectors, and a new manifold. Chip tuning in combination with the “infusions” described above will allow you to achieve an output of 250 hp . Turbocharging the 2ZZ-GE engine involves replacing the connecting rod and piston group, injectors, exhaust, and installing lightweight valves and springs. A turbo kit based on the Garrett GT28 will ultimately give an increase of up to 300 horses .
Garrett GT28
Mechanical superchargers, developed by Blitz or Greddy , allow increased output on a standard piston group. This is the easiest way to tune a 2ZZ engine.

About the 2ZZ-GE engine for Toyota Corolla 9th generation E120 (2000 - 2006)
The 2ZZ-GE engine was developed in 1999 as a sports representative of the ZZ line. The engine has a high compression ratio of 11.5. The engine is characterized by the presence of a new composite cylinder block, a crankshaft with a reduced stroke and a larger cylinder diameter. In addition, the engine is characterized by the presence of an improved variable valve timing system. A number of markets received a version of the engine, throttled to 164-180 hp.
In addition to the basic version, there are options with a compressor based on the Eaton M45 or Eaton M62 supercharger. Engines with a compressor were used exclusively on Lotus and the compressor Corolla. The following weaknesses are noted.
1. High oil consumption. Weakness appears on all 2ZZs with mileage over 150 thousand km. In this case, you can gain time by decarbonizing. However, after some time you will still have to carry out a major overhaul or change the engine.
2. The engine knocks and makes noise. The reason is the timing belt.
3. The speed may fluctuate. In this case, it is necessary to check and clean the throttle body and idle air valve.
It is also necessary to note the demanding nature of the VVTL-i systems. For uninterrupted operation, timely replacement of bolt lifts is necessary. In addition, the engine is disposable.
TUNING OPPORTUNITIES
Despite the unpopularity of atmospheric tuning 2ZZ, there are options. By porting the cylinder head, combining the head channels, manifold, cutting the channels, lightweight valves, lightweight TRD ShPG, MWR St.3 shafts, 440cc injectors and other little things, it will be possible to get approximately 250 hp.
You can resort to installing a turbine. The market offers ready-made solutions for such tuning, which will allow you to get over 300 hp. Finally, you can use a compressor and this can be considered the simplest option for the city, which allows you to get a power of about 250-260 hp.
